(FROM THE ARTICLE: If you’re planning to attend the GOP National Convention in Cleveland two weeks from today, the Illinois delegation still has some hotel rooms available for late-deciding VIPs. Call it a sign of the times. What’s most remarkable about the upcoming GOP confab and official selection of Donald Trump as the party’s presidential nominee is who’s not attending—namely, almost the entire Illinois Republican power structure. A few folks could change their minds at the last minute. But, at the moment, not one member of Illinois’ congressional delegation has said they’ll be in Cleveland, according to both official and inside sources. Nor is Gov. Bruce Rauner, comptroller Leslie Munger or any statewide GOP official. And it goes a lot deeper than that. Also on the no-show list, sources say, are such high-profile, heavily involved Republicans as DuPage County Board President Dan Cronin, Illinois Toll Highway Authority Chairman Bob Schillerstrom, Illinois Manufacturers Association President Greg Baise, top fundraiser Ron Gidwitz and Regional Transportation Authority Chairman Kirk Dillard, though the latter said he may drive in one day for a public transit event. Some of the above have had clear policy differences with Trump, over international trade treaties, immigration reform and the like. A few others, like former Gov. Jim Edgar, ran as delegates committed to another candidate and weren’t named one of the state’s 12 at-large delegates. Still, “There’s not a lot of enthusiasm,” says one consultant who’s been a convention regular. The big shots his clients might want to chat up “won’t be there,” that source says, and there are security issues. “I’m not a baby, but I’m worried.” Even some of the Trump loyalists who were elected don’t have the money—well over $1,000—that attending a convention can cost. I’m told they received some financial assistance in some cases, arranged by friends of the nominee. “Our delegation is filled with a lot of people no one has ever heard of,” says a top lobbyist, referring to Trump delegates who won in most districts. “It’s all ‘Dan who runs the gun store’ types.” So, who will be there? Cook County Commissioner Tim Schneider, for one—he’s the current state GOP chair. Joining him will be two other former chairs: Jack Dorgan, a lobbyist named to an at-large slot, and fellow lobbyist/consultant Pat Brady, who was elected a Kasich delegate. Also at the top of the list are Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar, fundraiser and Cubs part-owner Todd Ricketts and lobbyist/consultant Nancy Kimme. But beyond that, the list gets pretty thin, including just a few legislators and some county and municipal officials, but not Illinois Senate GOP Leader Christine Radogno, though her House counterpart, Jim Durkin, is planning to attend. Some party officials are hoping that will change at the last minute. We’ll see. Meanwhile, at a time when rooms usually are impossible to obtain, Illinois has space.)

ABC7 Eyewitness News spoke with a Wheaton resident who was trying to deliver a message to the governor via a sign saying, “No budget; no votes.” “I think he saw it. I don’t think he wants to make eye contact with me,” said the sign holder. The governor wasn’t much into straying from the script today. “Do you hear from people as you march about what’s going on in Springfield about the budget?” ABC7 Eyewitness News reporter Ben Bradley asked the governor. “No, today we celebrate the independence of America,” said Rauner. Nationally, Hillary Clinton had several supporters marching in Wheaton’s parade, but next to no one showed up on Donald Trump’s behalf, despite the fact the county is overwhelmingly Republican. Then again, the state’s GOP senator has said he won’t vote for Trump. “You were the first to come out and say Trump is unfit. Does that mean you’re voting for Hillary Clinton?” Bradley asked Illinois Republican Sen. Mark Kirk. “No, David Petraeus is who I’d like to write-in. I think he’s better qualified. We need someone who will be the best commander-in-chief we’ve ever had,” said Sen. Kirk. In Oak Park, Kirk’s Democratic opponent says the independent streak doesn’t scratch the surface. “I’ve been working hard for the people of Illinois and he has not. You’re talking about a guy who goes with the corporate interests against the interests of everyday people,” said Democratic Rep. Tammy Duckworth, who is running against Kirk for the U.S. Senate. The incumbent Kirk is the underdog in that senate race. The latest polling shows Tammy Duckworth continuing to lead, although there is a lot of time before November.)

The Illinois senator became the first Republican last month to release an anti-Trump television ad, which said his party’s presumptive nominee “is not fit to be commander in chief.” The 32-second spot, running in the Chicago market, outlines Kirk’s efforts to present himself to voters in his liberal-leaning state as more moderate than his fellow Republicans in Washington. “Mark was the first Republican to support a vote on President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee,” the television commercial says. Kirk is one of a handful of endangered Republican senators up for re-election this November who are grappling with Trump’s controversial candidacy. At times, Kirk seems more focused on Trump than his Democratic opponent, Rep. Tammy Duckworth, going so far as reversing his support for Trump last month. Kirk’s success could determine whether the GOP keeps its majority status in the Senate. Kirk’s opposition to Trump kicked into high gear last month amid the controversy over the presumptive GOP nominee’s racially charged criticism of a federal judge. “I find Donald Trump’s belief that an American-born judge of Mexican descent is incapable of fairly presiding over his case is not only dead wrong, it is un-American,” Kirk said at the time. Trump later issued a statement saying that his comments were “misconstrued” by the media. A few weeks into his dump Trump strategy, Kirk says bucking the top of his ticket is paying off. “It’s helped because I’m a very independent voice for Illinois,” he told CNN, adding that his strategy helps “make sure that people know that I always put Illinois first.” A Kirk campaign official tells CNN that there has been an uptick in donor and volunteer interest since the senator distanced himself from Trump. His Democratic opponent Rep. Tammy Duckworth, who was quick to capitalize on Kirk’s about face on Trump, maintains that Kirk still equals Trump. “Mark Kirk is (using) the exact kind of rhetoric as Donald Trump and he just needs to own it and stop lying about it,” Duckworth told CNN. If an official at, say, the NIH or FBI think that a woman should be a mother for some reason or other, he or she can block an abortion. Maybe the woman has great genes or a high IQ or the sorts of financial resources we need in parents. Let’s leave that decision where it belongs: in the hands of the government. Heck, there’s really no reason even to tell women if they’re on the “no abort” list. Let them find out at the clinic. And if they go in for an abortion only to discover they are among the million or more people on the list, there will be no clear process for getting off it, even if it was a bureaucratic error or case of mistaken identity. However, according to a report, some states are more patriotic than others.  The personal finance website, WalletHub, released its list of the most patriotic states, revealing that red states are more patriotic in their military and civic engagement than blue states. When combining military and civic engagement, Virginia takes the No. 1 spot as the most patriotic state, ranking No. 3 in military engagement and No. 6 in civic engagement. New Jersey came in last place overall. Alaska takes the lead in the military engagement category with the highest number of veterans at 100.8 per 1,000 residents. That’s two times higher than New York, with 45.5 people. “[Joining the military] seems more like a cultural thing than a true ‘patriotism’ thing,” said Steven Greene, associate professor of political science at North Carolina State University. He drew the stark contrast between those in rural areas, like Alaska, and the south, where military service is disproportionately more “revered and culturally engrained” than the north. However, Theresa Martinez, associate professor of sociology at the University of Utah, says the military is more of an economic incentive. “A means to move out of poverty.”  The first category of civic engagement is voter turnout, as most Americans tout voting as a patriotic endeavor. When voting in the 2012 presidential election, Minnesota took the gold with a 74 percent voter turnout rate, while Arizona took last place at 38 percent. Alison Dagnes, a professor of political science at Shippensburg University, wants to encourage running for elected office and volunteering to work for the country, not just in the military. She calls running for state office or U.S. Congress a “worthy pursuit” that all Americans should consider. Another aspect of civic engagement in the report is Peace Corps participation, which Vermont leads at 59 people per 100,000 residents, 21 times higher than last place Mississippi.)

Wow. Not even the goofy sit-in by congressional Democrats, or their calls for domestic gun control after Orlando, exposes the barren intellectual wasteland of modern liberalism quite like that moronic question from a national television network. “When Muslims show up chanting Allah, have bombs, guns, people die, my guess is there is a pattern,” one Twitter user responded. Led by the president of the United States — dogged in his determination to personally rehabilitate radical Islam by pretending it doesn’t exist, no matter how many innocent people have to die — American liberals have performed mental gymnastics to look past the blood and the carnage and the chants of “Allahu Akbar” and the repeated declarations of jihad and radical Islamic motivations. “It’s a hate crime!” they protest. “Americans hate gays!” “It’s guns!” As others have noted, it’s easier in the eyes of American liberals for a man to identify as a woman than for a Muslim radical to identify as a Muslim radical. The inanity of American liberals has gotten so bad that terror group al-Qaida has instructed its followers to only target the West’s majority whites — so their attacks in the name of Islam aren’t confused with “hate crimes” aimed at ethnicity or sexual orientation. Even the terrorists are tearing their hair out trying to get through to liberals. Secretary of State John Kerry absurdly tried to spin Tuesday’s Turkey attack, which killed over 40 and injured over 200 others. He tried to argue that the attack was a sign that ISIS is losing. Yes. And if we just restricted Americans’ access to guns, ISIS might really be on the run! As much as we endorse the power of positive thinking, it has to be based on reality. You have to live in the real world. You cannot bend spoons with your mind, and you cannot bend the world to your liking with the force of your will. American guns did not cause the attack in Istanbul. Neither did homophobia have anything to do with it. Will the bombs in Turkey wake anybody up? (FROM THE ARTICLE: We conservatives often bemoan the commercialization and secularization of our traditional holidays.  Christmas – or should we say the Winter Holiday – now begins around November 15, Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day are occasions for mattress sales, not solemn commemorations of the sacrifices made to preserve our way of life. Now comes news from researchers at Harvard University that the July 4th holiday commemorating the announcement of the Declaration of Independence may still be serving its intended purpose – promoting patriotism. The good news is it only seems to work on Republicans. According to the study by Andreas Madestam and David Yanagizawa-Drott, “There is no evidence of an increased likelihood of identifying as a Democrat, indicating that Fourth of July shifts preferences to the right rather than increasing political polarization.” The three key findings of those attending July 4th celebrations: *When done before the age of 18, it increases the likelihood of a youth identifying as a Republican by at least 2 percent. *Celebrating Independence Day raises the likelihood that parade watchers will vote for a Republican candidate by 4 percent. *Celebrating the 4th of July boosts the likelihood a reveler will vote by about 1 percent and increases the chances they’ll make a political contribution by 3 percent. *What’s more, the impact isn’t fleeting. “Surprisingly, the estimates show that the impact on political preferences is permanent, with no evidence of the effects depreciating as individuals become older,” said the Harvard report. It is worth noting that many of the grievances the Founders outlined in the Declaration of Independence had to do with taxes and big government, charges we regularly level at Democrats, such as Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, so perhaps it is understandable that the sentiments commemorated on July 4th don’t resonate with establishment Democrats as much as they do with conservatives. However, we are not sure that turning children into establishment Republicans is a good thing; they might find themselves, like Republican Speaker of the House Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, drawn to doubling the national debt, pork barrel spending, endless and inconclusive wars and bringing vast numbers of anti-constitutional immigrants to our country. Given that movement conservatives are the last remaining American political movement to fully embrace the values and guidance of the Declaration of Independence, it seems to us that if there was ever a time for Americans to recall exactly why we declared our independence it is this Fourth of July.)

That’s the number of dollars the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) paid in bogus tax refunds in 2014 because of identity theft refund fraud, according to the Government Accountability Office. The IRS has a Taxpayer Protection Program (TPP) that sounds like it should provide security. It does, but not enough to prevent IRS from paying $30 million to identity theft fraudsters in 2014, based on the 1.6 million screened by the program.  That’s just one of the ways Uncle Sam fights identity theft fraud. About 7,200 of them were bogus. In total, IRS processed more than 150 million individual tax returns in 2015. Overall, the GAO report indicates the IRS does a decent job of detecting and stopping ID fraud, which is a big business. Crooks attempted to get $25.6 billion from bogus refunds in 2014. The IRS beat them most of the time, stopping or recovering the theft of $22.5 billion, 88 percent of the attempted pillage. But in the remaining cases, crooks got the $3.1 billion. That could be a low-ball estimate, however. GAO says the IRS might have been beaten an unknown number of times for an undetermined amount of money by undetected cheating.)

He is also expanding his communication team by hiring two veteran media strategists. Jason Miller will be his senior communications adviser and Michael Abboud will take charge of rapid response and “daily messaging.” These staff changes don’t signal a change in Trump’s bash-the-media approach but instead likely represent an effort to improve his spin and bypass or outmaneuver the mainstream media in more effective ways. Thompson, who in 1983 and 1989 engineered raising Illinois’ state personal and corporate income tax rates by 20 percent, will receive a generous increase to his lavish, gold-plated state pension on July 1, 2016, while Illinois residents on Social Security government pensions will see negligible increases to their own benefits next year. Thompson’s annual pension as of 2016 is $147,477. On July 1, his annual cost-of-living increase of 3% will boost his annual government pension by $4,424. Compare those figures to Social Security recipients, whose cost-of-living increase of two-tenths of one percent for 2017 was just recently announced. For those receiving a Social Security pension of $1,000 a month, that cost-of-living increase amounts to only $24 annually, or nearly one-hundred eight-five times less than that of Thompson. “It is obscene that tax-raiser Thompson is pulling in millions of dollars from the essentially bankrupt state pension fund, while retirees on Social Security pensions, whose earnings were taxed to prop-up his state pension fund, must get by with an increase of $2 or $3 a month in 2017,” said Jim Tobin, President of Taxpayers United of America (TUA).
