November 28 Morning Edition

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— DIERSEN HEADLINE: Anti-Trumps say Trump’s claim that ‘millions of people’ voted illegally for Clinton is bogus.  How many illegals are registered to vote in America, in Illinois, in your county, in your township/ward, in your municipality, and in your precinct?  How many of them voted in the November 8, 2016 election?  How many of them voted for Clinton?  Will the Democrats ask the Democrats who run GAO to investigate and answer those questions?
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/politics/ct-fact-check-trump-20161127-story.html
— Management behaviors that send great people out the door – Marcel Schwantes  (DIERSEN: While I worked for the federal government for almost 30 years, my superiors were always under tremendous pressure from Democrat politicians a) to hire, to retain, and to promote Democrats, and especially Democrats who were minority, female, and/or younger and b) to make way for them by getting rid of their employees who were Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/success/inc/tca-management-behaviors-that-send-great-people-out-the-door-20161118-story.html
— Your social media ranting could sink your job prospects – Brian J. O’Connor  (DIERSEN: By searching the internet, what “negative” things could employers find about you?  They could easily find the following “negative” things about me: baptized, raised, and confirmed as a Missouri Synod Lutheran; conservative; Republican; American; White; male; old (born in 1949); non-poor; gun owner; German American; draft avoider; ancestors have been in America since the 1840s; my Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, did not promote me beyond GS-13, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take an $18,459 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980; my Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, they disallowed my education deductions, and they disallowed my partial day per diem claims; my Democrat Post Office superiors forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests; I have filed lawsuits; etc.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/success/tca-your-social-media-ranting-could-sink-your-job-prospects-20161118-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Did things get a little heated on your social media feed after the recent election? Be careful. It could prevent you from getting hired. Donald Trump got the top job in America despite his penchant for shooting from the lip on Twitter, but other job seekers aren’t so lucky. More and more, an ill-tempered tweet or a crude Facebook rant can disqualify you from a job. According to an April survey by the job site CareerBuilder, 60 percent of employers comb social networking sites to research job candidates. Of those, 46 percent said they’d reject a candidate if they found “provocative” photos, videos or information; 43 percent object to information about drinking or drugs; and 33 percent said they’d toss a candidate for “discriminatory comments related to race, religion, gender, etc.” An offensive social media post can not only keep you out of a job, it can also cost you the one you have, of course. Just last month in Georgia, Jane Wood Allen, a Forsyth County Schools paraprofessional, was canned after a Facebook post in which she called first lady Michelle Obama “a gorilla.”)
— Why is working not worth the effort for some men? – Robert Samuelson  (DIERSEN: For me, see above concerning what employers can/would find about me by searching the internet.)

DAILY HERALD
— Munger’s strength – Kerry Lester
http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20161128/news/161129138/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Political data analyst Scott Kennedy recently did a deep dive of Illinois election results and found, among other tidbits, that even though Republican Illinois Comptroller Leslie Munger of Lincolnshire lost statewide to Democratic Chicago City Clerk Susana Mendoza, she outperformed Republicans at the top of the ticket — including President-elect Donald Trump and departing U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk of Highland Park — everywhere but in southern Illinois. Munger’s performance was particularly strong in the collar counties, where she took an average of 51 percent of the vote, compared to Trump’s 41 percent and Kirk’s 45 percent. In suburban Cook County, Munger took 39 percent of the vote, while Trump took 30 percent and Kirk took 33 percent. For more on the election, check out Kennedy’s site, www.illinoiselectiondata.com.)

QUINCY HERALD WHIG
— It’s time to get down to specifics, drop the stereotypes – Doug Wilson  (DIERSEN: Democrats run America. Democrats determine who is stereotyped positively and who is stereotyped negatively. Democrats stereotype positively those who are anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, anti-German Americans, anti-draft avoiders, and anti-those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors. Democrats stereotype negatively those who are Protestant, conservative, Republican, American, White, male, older, rich, gun owners, German American, draft avoiders, and those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time.  That is one reason why Trump won and Clinton lost.)

NORTHWEST INDIANA TIMES
— Breaking down the blue-collar workforce – Chris Gelbach  (DIERSEN: Are/were you a member of the blue-collar workforce?  I was 1964-1972.  While you were a member of the blue-collar workforce, did you hold jobs that minorities and women could have held, that is, did you take jobs away from minorities and from women?  I did.  I washed dishes 1964-1966; I cleaned golf shoes, chipped slag, and pumped gasoline in 1966; I delivered mail 1966-1969; I worked on an automobile assembly line and as a security guard in 1970; and I pumped gasoline 1970-1972. In my defense, few minorities and few women wanted the blue-collar jobs that I held.  My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have always demonized, denigrated, and condemned all the jobs that I have held as being “bad jobs.”)
http://www.nwitimes.com/business/jobs-and-employment/breaking-down-the-blue-collar-workforce/article_c1eb3fa2-62e1-5c63-b465-6be3ef070721.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In 2013, the working class accounted for nearly two-thirds of the country’s entire civilian labor force between the ages of 18 and 64. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, people of color will become a majority of the American working class in 2032, well before the overall U.S. population becomes “majority-minority” in 2043. The subset of the working class aged 25 to 34 will be majority-minority just five years from now in 2021. As a June 2016 Economic Policy Institute report on the topic by Wilson notes, the wages of all gender, racial and ethnic groups have failed to keep pace with the nation’s economy-wide productivity growth between 1979 and 2014. The hardest-hit workers in this respect have been Latino men, who have seen their hourly wages decrease by an inflation-adjusted 9.8 percent over this period. Second were black men, whose wages have decreased by 7.2 percent. White males, in contrast, have seen their wages decrease by a significantly lower 3.1 percent over the same period. Working-class wages for women, meanwhile, trail those of working-class men across all ethnic groups. White working-class women make 81 percent of the median hourly wage of white working-class men. But even here, race supersedes gender to some degree, with black men making 78 percent of what white men do, and Latino men making 76 percent.)

https://pjmedia.com/trending/2016/11/27/hypocrite-megyn-kelly-i-have-no-political-ideology-im-a-soulless-lawyer-at-heart/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Sure, Megyn: “I am not an ideologue. I always laugh because when I was coming up the ranks at Fox News, the left thought I was always in the tank for the Republicans because they always see you through a certain prism. And then during this year of Donald Trump, now the right thinks I’m in the tank for the Never Trumpers or the liberals. But the truth is, I’m not in the tank, I’m not swimming in the tank at all. I’m off to the side of the tank. I don’t even have my bathing suit on. I’m just watching the tank…I have no political ideology. I’m a soulless lawyer at heart. I can see both sides of every argument.”  All those who believe Megyn, please raise your hand. No one. Ah. That’s what I thought. I watched the debates and I’ve watched quite a lot of  “The Kelly File.” As such, I know what her ideology is: establishmentarianism. That’s what Megyn Kelly is all about. She loves the establishment of both parties. That’s clear from the way she approaches them … and that’s also one of the major reasons why Rupert Murdoch loves her as much as he does; after all, he too is an establishmentarian. The only reason Fox News eventually decided to support Trump is that they realized they couldn’t bring him down. When you can’t beat them, join them.)

NEW YORK POST
— The left’s lunatic ‘hate’ hysteria – Editorial (DIERSEN: Who promotes hatred of Trump and hatred of Trump’s supporters in your precinct, in your municipality, in your township/ward, in your county, in Illinois, in America, and across the world?)
http://nypost.com/2016/11/27/the-lefts-lunatic-hate-hysteria/
(FROM THE EDITORIAL: Just because President-elect Donald Trump has unequivocally disavowed and condemned white nationalists and alt-right types who cheered his victory, don’t expect the left and its media allies to end their hysteria about the orgy of “hate” they claim is sweeping America. Trump made no bones about where he stands: “I don’t want to energize the group,” he told The New York Times. “I’m not looking to energize them . . . and I disavow the group. Disavow and condemn.” That prompted some alt-righters to complain that they’d been “bamboozled by The Donald.” What’s really driving this is the left’s desperate denial of the simple fact that Trump emerged victorious by winning over people who’d previously voted for Barack Obama. If you won’t admit that the left no longer speaks to working-class whites, then it’s easier to blame “a basket of deplorables,” as Jason Riley notes in The Wall Street Journal. So they point to opportunists like ex-Klan leader David Duke or white nationalist Richard Spencer as evidence that a new wave of intolerance elected Trump. Bull. Spencer attracted barely 200 people at his conference, with its made-for-video “Hail Trump” salutes. Yet the media responded slavishly with wall-to-wall coverage. Duke realizes that anything positive he says about Trump will be covered – so he keeps praising him. That such “watchdogs” as the Anti-Defamation League and the Southern Poverty Law Center have bought in to this hysteria proves they’ve become blatant partisans. (The ADL seems unbothered by the anti-Israel record of Rep. Keith Ellison, who’s bidding to chair the Democratic Party.) The left is determined to undermine Trump’s legitimacy, so expect to see this nonsense continue. Just realize that it bears no resemblance to reality.)

INQUISITER
— Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly, Megyn Kelly, And Sean Hannity Rule November Cable News Ratings – Daryl Deino
http://www.inquisitr.com/3749369/fox-news-bill-oreilly-megyn-kelly-and-sean-hannity-rule-november-cable-news-ratings/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Fox News was easily the ratings winner during one of the most divisive election months in recent history. For the month of November (ratings are averaged up until November 22 at Showbuzz Daily), Bill O’Reilly comes in first place with an average of 4.03 million viewers a night, while Megyn Kelly comes in second place with an average of 3.37 million a night. Sean Hannity, Fox News’ rising star, has averaged 2.94 million. It’s important to note that on some nights, these stars didn’t even appear on their shows. This especially rings true when talking about Bill O’Reilly. The last time O’Reilly hosted The O’Reilly Factor before heading off on a well-earned vacation, Bill talked about Trump’s closed-door meeting with New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio. “As you may know, the nation’s largest town falling apart literally with construction projects clogging almost every road in Manhattan, beggars all over the place and a defiant mayor who says he will not cooperate with the federal government on illegal immigration. Something he told Mr. Trump today,” O’Reilly angrily said before showing a video clip where de Blasio says that NYC and other cities will do all they can to protect their residents and make sure that families are not torn apart. Bill O’Reilly then handed the segment over to Fox News correspondent Doug McKelway, who said that the mayor was not surprised to see dozens of TV cameras and 25 reporters because de Blasio wanted people to know he will fight Donald Trump tooth and nail on the issue. However, de Blasio did tell reporters that the talk was productive, and he realizes that the ball is now in Donald Trump’s court. Megyn Kelly has dealt with the issue of illegal immigration on The Kelly File this month, but Kelly seemed more interested in seeing if Donald Trump would follow through on his promise to pursue criminal charges against Hillary Clinton. “For months on the campaign trail, Mr. Trump attacked his rival for conducting the highly classified business of the United States over a private, unsecured email server — all while she was Secretary of State,” Kelly said at the very beginning of her show this past Tuesday. Then, Megyn Kelly played a tape where Donald Trump said Hillary was weak, pathetic, and should be in jail for what she did with her emails. Another tape showed Donald Trump discussing the issue with Anderson Cooper on CNN. Trump told Cooper that everybody knows Hillary should be in prison. As Megyn Kelly noted, Trump’s supporters screamed “Lock her up!” at many of his rallies, including one in Pennsylvania. Kelly had Clinton Cash author Peter Schweizer on, and he said that Trump’s decision was disturbing. He believes Trump should not be talking about this at all, and it’s unethical for a president-elect to try and interrupt an FBI investigation. However, Congressman Sean Duffy told Megyn Kelly that he disagreed since the Clinton investigation has been played out as much as possible. Sean Hannity wasn’t happy with Trump’s decision either. But he has been more upset with the way the mainstream press has been treating Trump and actually called on the president-elect to boycott the media. Politico reported the story on Wednesday. “Fox News commentator Sean Hannity said that until journalists admit to colluding with Hillary Clinton’s campaign, President-elect Donald Trump should reconsider granting traditional access to reporters.” Trump can do this and speak directly to you, the America people, without having his words twisted and taken out of context. Why not do that?” Hannity asked, referring to the fact Trump put out his own video announcing his executive actions in his first 100 days in office. Of course, Sean Hannity suffered a lot of backlash in the media. But the anger against Hannity is what is propelling him very close to beating Megyn Kelly in the ratings. Do you think Sean Hannity can beat Megyn Kelly in December? Let us know your thoughts and predictions in the comments section.)

http://www.decaturdaily.com/opinion/columnists/popularity-contest-with-trump/article_e8fd4557-c5a4-5aa4-a9a0-95edb4d440e5.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Journalists need to recognize we’re not going to win a popularity contest with Trump, and we shouldn’t try. Trump is not going to be appeased by friendlier coverage. He campaigned against the media, and he will continue to use the media as a foil. His party controls Congress, and conservatives will soon control the Supreme Court. If he can discredit the media, he’ll remove another check to his power. Our third president, Thomas Jefferson, famously remarked that “were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter.” Our 45th president would clearly prefer the former. He has shut out news organizations, including The Post, whose coverage he dislikes. He has threatened to restrict First Amendment press freedoms. Pursuing public affection is a fool’s errand. The profession was never held in high public esteem. And the recent decline in approval is due entirely to Trump’s bashing.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Political corruption will never be eliminated in Chicago, but some people will tell you nobody ever did more to slow it down than William Witkowski. Those who are old enough should recognize the names of Witkowski’s investigative targets: Illinois Gov. Otto Kerner, powerhouse Ald. Thomas Keane, Attorney General William Scott, Judge Reginald Holzer and John Cardinal Cody. Others will recognize the lawyers who gained prominence prosecuting them: Jim Thompson, Sam Skinner, Tyrone Fahner, Jeremy Margolis and Scott Turow. But very few are familiar with the former IRS agent whose extraordinary investigative skills made those cases — and in the process made him a legend in certain circles. Witkowski died Nov. 13 from complications of multiple sclerosis. He was 74. Never one to take bows during his lifetime, Witkowski will have to suffer these accolades in silence. “Bill Witkowski was the single best investigator I have ever known,” said veteran investigative reporter Edward Pound, formerly of the Chicago Sun-Times. I’m quoting Pound here because many people regard him as the single best investigator ever to work in my business, and it takes one to know one. But everyone who spoke to me about Witkowski offered the same sort of superlative assessment without reservation. “We wouldn’t have been able to do the prosecutions we did without him,” said Fahner, the prosecutor who convicted Keane and went on to become Illinois Attorney General and later a successful lawyer with Mayer Brown. In the 1970s and 1980s, it was the IRS that did most of the heavy lifting on political corruption in Illinois. And in that circle, Witkowski gained a reputation as the alpha dog. Many recall his unassuming style. A large man with a flat top brush cut, Witkowski looked more the part of the neighborhood guy he was than anybody’s notion of an IRS agent.)

— Trump’s Walk of Fame star gets 24-hour security
http://www.fox32chicago.com/news/219637652-story
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Donald Trump is getting a lot of security obviously now that he’s President-elect, but did you know his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame is also getting a lot of security. The star is all repaired and drawing big crowds after being vandalized last month. Now, it has 24/7 protection. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has placed three barricades around the star, and two officers are on foot patrol along with a squad car nearby at all times. The LAPD days this monitoring does not cost extra for the city, since officers are always patrolling the busy area. There is no word on when this presidential protection will cease. This all comes about after a vandal hacked out the star’s gold-colored name and television logo last month. The culprit, James Lambert Otis, told news media outlets he originally intended to “remove” the entire star from the 6800 block of Hollywood Boulevard, auction it off in New York and give the money to the nearly dozen women who allege they were groped or sexually mistreated by Trump. But Otis said he was unable to accomplish the feat.)

She revealed that she continued to track their whereabouts after the festival was over. Maude, 18, is a freshman in Northwestern’s School of Communication, according to a university spokesman. THE BLAZE
— Tucker Carlson slams business owner Mathew Blanchfield who refuses to work with ‘ignorant’ Trump supporters – Tre Goins-Phillips  (DIERSEN: How many Blanchfields are there in America, in Illinois, in your county, in your township/ward, in your municipality, and in your precinct?  They all voted for Clinton. How soon, if not already, will they display signs that say the following are not wanted: Trump supporters, Protestants, conservatives, Republicans, Americans, Whites, males, older people, rich people, gun owners, German-Americans, draft avoiders, and/or those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors?)
http://www.theblaze.com/news/2016/11/24/tucker-carlson-slams-business-owner-who-refuses-to-work-with-ignorant-trump-supporters/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Mathew Blanchfield, CEO of the Albuquerque-based internet marketing firm 1st in SEO, went on Fox News’ “Tucker Carlson Tonight” Wednesday to defend his announcement that those who support President-elect Donald Trump are “not welcome” at his company. And the conversation between Carlson and the business owner was brutal. “If you are a Republican, voted for Donald Trump or support Donald Trump, in any manner, you are not welcome at 1st in SEO and we ask you to leave our firm,” Blanchfield’s original letter read. During the bewildering discussion on Fox, Carlson asked the CEO why he would say something like that. Blanchfield argued he is standing on “moral principle” and that he is intolerant of bigotry, racism, sexism and fascism. The New Mexico entrepreneur went on to draw comparisons between Nazi Germany and the United States under a Trump administration. “When you say ‘fascism,’ I mean, you don’t really believe that? If you believed that Trump was a fascist dictator, then you would organize an actual resistance to him. You would be Dietrich Bonhoeffer, you would be fighting against him for real,” Carlson told the Blanchfield. “[W]hy wouldn’t you take up arms against him? If you really believe the country is being taken over by someone you compare to Hitler, then that’s — I mean — that’s like the worst thing that could ever happen.” Blanchfield, who throughout the interview noted the number of death threats he’s received, told the Fox anchor that their discussion was his “resistance.” Clearly becoming frustrated by the interaction, Carlson told Blanchfield he is “belittling historic reality” by comparing Trump to Hilter. “Being rude to news anchors who make $3 million a year is not the same as rounding up an entire ethnic group and killing them, or invading Poland,” the Fox host said. “For you to say that really does diminish actual historical crimes,” Carlson added. In the end, Carlson shot back at Blanchfield, telling him he’s “on a moral vanity trip like I’ve never seen.” “Has it ever occurred to you that every rich, famous person, fashionable person, in America agrees with you?” Carlson asked. “That you’re taking no risk at all? That, in fact, people like you are celebrated in every American newspaper, at award ceremonies? I mean, come on.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Americans spent $15.4 billion on veterinary care in 2015 (only half of it by my family). The average American spends more on pets annually than on alcohol, landline phones or men’s and boys’ clothing. We spend more on veterinary care for our dogs than the average person spends for his own medical care in the Dominican Republic, Egypt, India and many other countries. Even knowing that we’re a devoted nation of pet lovers, it’s still surreal to visit the specialists’ office and see the range of possibilities on the office wall — cardiology, gastroenterology, ophthalmology, etc, etc. We’ll need the oncologist soon.)

RUSS STEWART
— CLINTON GOT 83.7% OF CHICAGO VOTE, BUT THERE WERE STILL 134,792 “DEPLORABLES” (DIERSEN: I am a deplorable, that is, I am a Republican. If I had more time, I would analyze the DuPage vote and the Milton Township vote to identify those precincts which have the most deplorabes in total and as a percentage of registered voters.)
http://www.russstewart.com/articles/2016/11-23-2016.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Mark Twain popularized the saying that there are “lies, damn lies, and statistics.” In Chicago, and by extrapolation Cook County and Illinois, there were truths, damn truths and stunning statistics on Nov. 8. The most fundamental truth is that when a candidate such as Hillary Clinton wins Chicago 907,920-134,792, a margin of 773,128 votes, Illinois is gone. There is no way for a Republican to counteract that vote margin in the Collar Counties and Downstate. Clinton won the state by 859,319 votes, with Chicago supplying 90 percent of that margin. Chicago may be a “sanctuary city,” but Republicans are vanishing quicker than illegal aliens. Wait a minute, are any “undocumenteds” vanishing? Mitt Romney got 148,181 votes in Chicago in 2012, while Donald Trump got 134,792 votes, a paltry 12.4 percent and a diminution of 13,389 votes, on Nov. 8. Trump won a majority in 25, or 1.2 percent, of Chicago’s 2,116 precincts, four in the 41st Ward and two in the 38th Ward on the Northwest Side and 13 in the 19th Ward, four in the 23rd Ward and two in the 13th Ward on the Southwest Side. Trump averaged an anemic 63 votes per precinct. Bruce Rauner averaged 64 votes in 2014, but Pat Quinn got 407,107 fewer votes than Clinton did. On that trajectory, by 2028 or soon thereafter, the Republican vote may fall under 5 percent countywide and Republicans would lose their ballot line. Clinton got 95.4 percent of the vote in Chicago’s 18 black-majority wards, 87.1 percent in the 11 Hispanic-majority wards and 84.6 percent in the seven affluent, mostly white, Lakefront wards. Chicago has become “Manhattan West,” or maybe “San Francisco East,” conspicuously, congenitally and compulsively liberal. As for Chicago’s black wards, they’re “Harlem West,” with Trump’s 13,286 votes here only slightly exceeding his total in New York’s predominantly black neighborhood. Trump got 3 percent or less of the vote in 11 of the 18 black-majority wards. He lost the 24th Ward 15,932-245. Trump averaged 738 votes in those 18 wards. The Republicans have ceased to be a nuisance, and they now are a nonentity. Truth number one is that, like the rest of the country, Clinton did not replicate Obama’s 2012 showing among black voters. Obama got 422,727 votes in the black-majority Chicago wards in 2012, while Clinton got 363,621 in this election, a falloff of 59,100 votes, as is shown in the attached chart. In Illinois that decline didn’t matter, as Clinton’s vote increased among Hispanics and white liberals. You can’t lose Illinois coming out of Chicago with a 907,920-134,792, 83.7 percent, majority, which is a margin of 773,128 votes. However, Clinton got 54,818 more votes in Chicago than Obama got in 2012. Clinton won Illinois by 859,319 votes, almost as good as Obama’s 884,296-vote margin in 2012. In other urbanized Great Lakes states, such as Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, a 10 to 15 percent decline in the black vote tipped those states to Trump. Truth number two is that, unlike the rest of the country, white male blue collar workers and those in law enforcement failed to defect to Trump in significant numbers. Only in the Far Northwest Side 41st Ward, which is chock full of cops and firefighters, did Trump even come close. The Clinton-Trump vote was 14,042-11,457, a 52.3 percent win and a margin of 2,585 votes, with Trump winning a majority in four of 47 precincts and getting 40 to 49 percent of the vote in another 28. Clinton actually did better there than Obama, who won 13,134-11,048. Clinton got 908 more votes than Obama got in 2012, while Trump, who got 42.6 percent of the vote in the ward, ran just 409 votes ahead of Romney, who got 44.9 percent. Given all the hysteria and the nasty $4 million Michael McAuliffe-Merry Marwig race for state representative, turnout in the 41st Ward increased from 24,634 in 2012 to 26,867 in this election. The 41st Ward encompasses Edison Park, Norwood Park and Oriole Park, and it is to Chicago what Staten Island is to New York, an enclave of conservativism. McAuliffe won the ward 11,050-7,783. Debatably, the Trump vote was more of a positive than a negative for McAuliffe. McAuliffe said that he had “a lot of Trump negativity” in the Park Ridge areas of the district, but that wasn’t the case in the 41st Ward, which has 34 precincts in the district. In fact, the Nov. 8 statistics are astounding. On the Northwest Side, except for the recalcitrant 41st Ward, the Clinton vote was 5 to 10 percent greater than the 2012 Obama vote.)

WORKER’S WORLD
— Trump targets federal workers – Carl Lewis  (DIERSEN: When you first learn that someone is a federal employee or a retired federal employee, what does that make you think of that person?  Ever-increasingly, individuals, organizations, companies, governments, and countries despise if not hate federal employees and federal retirees.  I was a federal employee for almost 30 years and I have been a federal retiree for more than 19 years.)
http://www.workers.org/2016/11/23/trump-targets-federal-workers/#.WDbIDhHxZZI
(FROM THE ARTICLE: There is evidence that the incoming Trump administration plans to target federal workers, including privatizing the Department of Veteran Affairs, to reduce the size of the federal workforce and substantially cut wages. Among the right-wing ideologues and advisors to Donald Trump on federal workers is Newt Gingrich, coauthor of the infamous “Contract with America” (more aptly called a “Contract ON ‘America’ “) released by the Republican Party in 1994. It outlined austerity plans to decimate the working class as a whole and to specifically target federal workers. Gingrich was asked how this change would be managed in an interview with Lisa Rein of the Washington Post. “So there are two groups in Washington on this issue who are initially opposed,” stated Gingrich. “First you have the hard-line federal employee unions. They’re like the teachers union in New York. They are parallels. They are the group, that no matter how sick it is, they have a vested interest in the old order.” (Oct. 19). These cryptic comments refer to limiting collective bargaining rights, removing due process rights and cutting wages. Gingrich holds up Scott Walker, the anti-union governor of Wisconsin who devastated public employee unions and employee pensions, as a model. Gingrich used the example of short-staffed VA workers in Texas who were forced by management, under penalty of being charged with “insubordination,” to make phony appointments for veterans and then list them as “no-shows.” Instead of placing the blame where it should be — on incompetent and corrupt management officials who received bonuses for the volume of calls received and answered — he blames the workers who are the victims. This scam was finally exposed by an employee whistleblower and led to a shakeup in the agency. Like sharks smelling blood and going into a feeding frenzy, the ruling class began to use this example to put federal workers further under the chopping block. Paul Ryan, current Speaker of the House, views federal workers as a “privileged class.” When Ryan sat on the House Ways and Means Committee, which determines budgets for federal agencies, he proposed freezing workers’ pay for five years; raising the bar on performance standards; increasing the workload on employees by not backfilling when workers retire, resign or are terminated; and decreasing employee leave time, among other measures. Ryan’s ideas were copied from the right-wing Heritage Foundation’s “Blueprint for Reform.” Jessica Klement, the legislative director for the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association, refuted the blueprint: “The report starts with the assumption that federal pay and benefits are overly generous, and not in line with the private sector, and therefore need to be decreased. This assumption is wholly inaccurate. Most federal jobs lag behind their private sector counterparts.” The Federal Salary Council says federal employees are underpaid by an average of 35 percent. (fedsmith.com, July 16) Trump, however, plans to increase pay and benefits as well as new hires for the National Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement in order to carry out his racist and anti-immigrant plans.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Once thought a sure way to block illegals, the federal web-based E-Verify system was supposed to allow “businesses to determine the eligibility of their employees to work in the United States.” It doesn’t really. “We’ve got to talk about E-Verify,” Mr. Hutchinson said. “People come here for jobs. Reducing the power of that magnet reduces the cost of securing the border.” E-Verify now is riddled with holes. Even the official Department of Homeland Security website bears this proviso: “E-Verify does not provide your employer with any immigration, citizenship status or document information about you.” “A more effective system is more expensive,” Mr. Hutchinson said. “You have to check more databases to authenticate the identity of the person who presents a card. A truly comprehensive E-Verify burdens small businesses financially, but if you exempt businesses that employ fewer than 50 people, you leave the door open to fraud.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Nunes added that he isn’t aware of any lengthy questionnaire that Pompeo filled out, as is standard with major nominees. . . .Trump’s freewheeling approach is in marked contrast with that of past presidential transition teams, who have subjected nominees to weeks — and sometimes months — of vetting that includes deep-dives into their finances, taxes, previous employment and personal relationships. Barack Obama’s transition operation began contacting potential nominees months before he won the presidency — in the summer of 2008. After the election, the team tapped dozens of lawyers — many working on a volunteer basis — to help vet nominees and process their paperwork, according to former members of the team. . .Few of D.C.’s top political lawyers, typically hired to shepherd appointees through the process, have seen a copy of the Trump transition team’s vetting questionnaire, an internal document that past transition teams have used to uncover potentially embarrassing details of nominees’ past. Obama’s vetting document included 63 detailed questions about financial interests, past writings, professional experience and even social media posts.)

LAS VEGAS JOURNAL REVIEW
— Reforming the bureaucracy – Editorial  (DIERSEN: It seems that the only thing that those who support Trump and those who oppose Trump agree on is their hatred of federal employees like I was for almost 18 years, and by extension, their hatred of federal retirees like I have ben for more than 19 years. What is your attitude toward federal employees and toward federal retirees?  On what do you base your attitude?)
http://www.reviewjournal.com/opinion/editorials/editorial-reforming-the-bureaucracy
(FROM THE EDITORIAL: Incompetent or slothful bureaucrats may be among the biggest losers in a Donald Trump presidency.  Newsmax reports that the president-elect hopes to make it a top priority to remake the bureaucracy by looking at a hiring freeze and “addressing automatic raises [and] the inability to fire workers who perform poorly.” The Free Beacon noted last year that it takes almost six months to fire a federal employee — assuming the agency follows the proper protocol. A 2015 report from the General Accounting Office revealed that many supervisors opt to tolerate poor performance rather than to undertake a long, drawn-out process and risk litigation. The office found that the federal government dismissed only 3,489 employees for substandard work in 2013, just 0.18 percent of all personnel.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Senate lawmakers have scheduled a hearing to examine abuse and neglect at the state’s group homes for people with developmental disabilities following an investigation by the Chicago Tribune that found a system where basic care is lacking and harm is hidden by regulators. The Tribune found at least 42 deaths linked to abuse or neglect in group homes or their day programs in the last seven years, as care often fell to employees who were unlicensed or poorly trained. CRAIN’S CHICAGO BUSINESS
— Geofeedia cuts half its jobs as it looks for new direction – JOHN PLETZ  (DIERSEN: Ever-increasingly, “social media companies” side with those who protest (overwhelmingly Democrats) and against those who do not protest (overwhelmingly Republicans).)
http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20161121/BLOGS11/161129987/geofeedia-cuts-half-its-jobs-as-it-looks-for-new-direction
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The cuts happened last month, not long after Geofeedia was named in a broader report by the American Civil Liberties Union for selling software that was being used by law enforcement to monitor protesters. Several social media companies cut off Geofeedia’s direct access to their feeds of otherwise publicly available posts. Such access is crucial to the real-time capabilities that made Geofeedia popular with police departments, news organizations and private companies. The company’s plight illustrates how easily tech startups can run into trouble as new areas of technology evolve faster than their business models.)

WHBL
— Should I stay or should I go? U.S. civil servants gird for Trump – Reuters  (DIERSEN: Federal employees who seek jobs outside the federal government will soon learn of how strongly employers and everyone else despise, if not hate, past and present federal employees.  While I worked for the federal government for almost 30 years, virtually all my superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates were Democrats who despised, if not hated, Republicans like me.)
http://whbl.com/news/articles/2016/nov/22/should-i-stay-or-should-i-go-us-civil-servants-gird-for-trump/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Donald Trump’s surprise victory in the U.S. presidential election has set off a round of resume-polishing across Washington, as the nation’s federal civil servants prepare for a leader who has promised to freeze hiring and reverse many of the policies they have spent the past eight years putting in place. While anti-Washington rhetoric is a staple of U.S. politics, more than two dozen federal workers interviewed by Reuters said Trump’s divisive presidential campaign pointed to bigger potential problems than those that would normally come with a routine switch from a Democratic to a Republican administration. The New York businessman’s lack of political experience and contentious rhetoric have prompted some to assess whether they should leave government before he takes office on Jan. 20. As the Republican presidential candidate, Trump encouraged his supporters to harass journalists and attack protesters. He vowed to sue news outlets and women who accused him of sexual assault and said he would jail his opponent, Democrat Hillary Clinton. Trump’s conduct has caused some undercover agents to worry that their identities could be made public if they step out of line, said Susan Hennessey, a former attorney at the National Security Agency who has been urging people in government to keep working in Trump’s administration to help resist potential abuses of power. “I can’t and don’t blame anyone who feels they can’t stay,” she said. Other federal workers worry their integrity could be compromised if they work on cases that affect Trump’s vast business interests. Trump’s taxes are being audited by the Internal Revenue Service and the National Labor Relations Board is involved in a labor dispute at his Las Vegas hotel. Changes to tax laws or pollution rules could potentially impact some of his property holdings. “Do I get out or is it all the more important that I stay in to push back on the problematic things?” said one federal worker, who, like others interviewed for this story, asked not to be identified for fear of retaliation at work. UNRAVELING POLICIES A transfer of power always convulses Washington to some degree, particularly when it comes to the departure and arrival of political appointees in more than 4,000 posts. Those top officials oversee 2.7 million civilian workers, from park rangers to tax lawyers, who are expected to enact the president’s agenda and enforce laws passed by Congress regardless of their personal political views. But several workers told Reuters they’d rather leave government service than carry out orders they don’t agree with, pointing specifically at Trump’s vow to undo President Barack Obama’s policies on trade, immigration, health care and environmental protection. National security officials have printed out their resignation letters, ready to hand them in if Trump tries to revive policies such as waterboarding or mass surveillance of Americans they oppose on legal or moral grounds, according to more than 20 military, intelligence and Foreign Service officers, who all spoke on condition of anonymity. Regulators at the Environmental Protection Agency privately say they are looking for new jobs ahead of expected cutbacks at their agency, whose climate-change rules were criticized by Trump on the campaign trail. One manager is urging employees to stay on the job. “Sometimes democracy surprises you. And while the election results will no doubt bring many changes over the coming months, our job remains the same,” Sarah Dunham, director of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Atmospheric Programs, wrote to colleagues two days after the election. Misgivings apparently extend into the nation’s 1.5 million military service members as well. A survey released by the Military Times on Friday found that one in five service members said they will not re-enlist with Trump as Commander-in-chief. DEREGULATION DRIVE During his campaign, Trump promised to rescind two regulations for every new one his administration issues and freeze hiring at agencies that don’t cover public safety, public health or national defense. Republicans in Congress have pushed to erode job protections and scale back benefits. That would be a further blow for federal workers who have weathered furloughs, salary freezes and a three-week government shutdown in recent years. The civilian work force has shrunk by 4 percent since Obama’s first year in office, according to White House figures, and it could shrink further. More than one-third of federal workers will be eligible for retirement next year, according to a 2014 Government Accountability Office report. “This isn’t the worst thing that’s happened to us,” said a scientist who manages a fisheries laboratory in the Pacific Northwest of the expected changes. “It’s kind of continual.” There may be a silver lining for those who are trying to get a job working for Uncle Sam. Trump has promised to increase the number of border-security agents and immigration-enforcement officers as part of a crackdown on illegal immigration. And several managers said they were rushing to fill vacancies on their teams before Trump’s promised hiring ban takes effect. “Everybody seems to be scrambling to fill the positions they have open now,” one said.)

FEDERAL NEWS RADIO
— Is there a ‘Goldilocks’ rule to federal retirement? – Randy Silvey
http://federalnewsradio.com/commentary/2016/11/is-there-a-goldilocks-rule-to-federal-retirement/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Thousands upon thousands of current federal employees are quickly approaching that long anticipated day. The day they can expect to receive, farewell cards, a last in-office party and, of course, the cake with some heartfelt sentiment inscribed on its apex like, “Congratulations on your retirement, It’s about time!” Some can hardly contain their excitement and are ready to bolt straight away. While others feel anxiety about leaving and believe they should stay put. Which group has it right? The best retirement porridge comes from waiting just the right amount of time before digging in. Leave too soon, (to hot) risk suffering severe financial burns during retirement years. A time in life in which we are least prepared to recoup from financial catastrophe. Wait too long, (to cold) risk wasting years working, which could have been spent enjoying a hard earned (just right) retirement. . .Years ago, “Government job’s = safe … reliable … great benefits … decent pay … kinda boring.” A government position was considered a good job, supplemented with outstanding benefits. That doesn’t seem to be the prevailing thought anymore. So what happened? What took the luster off of federal employment? I’ve put together a few candidates for this sweeping change of opinion, feel free to add your own: Wages have become stagnant. Hiring freezes, which lead to the “Do more with less” mandates. Constant attacks (by large media and elected officials) on federal employee integrity, work ethics and benefits. Feds have become political badminton birdies. The perception that federal employees are unappreciated by, the public, the media and Washington.)

— Welcome to your new job, Mr. Trump! A note from HR – Lara Weber  (DIERSEN: There are about 1.4 million civilian federal employees and virtually all of them are Democrats.  What if Trump decided make the federal government “look like America.”  What if he said that he going to fire about 700,000 federal employees and replace them with Republicans?  I would be more than happy to help him with that.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/commentary/ct-human-relations-trump-hr-perspec-xxx-20161118-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Donald Trump will start his first job as a government employee on Jan. 20. For human resources professionals working with the White House, this must be an “on-boarding” experience like no other. In case none of their existing boilerplate welcome letters fits for this president-elect, I offer an updated version: Mr. Trump: Welcome to the company! We in the Human Resources Department of the United States of America congratulate you on your new job! Your start date is Jan. 20, 2017, and your starting salary will be $400,000 per year as a full-time employee (though we understand that you have opted for the $1/year salary plan; please be sure to complete the appropriate tax forms). Our role as human resources professionals is to help you succeed. You have a big job ahead as president, and we know it might feel overwhelming. We’re here to help you get acclimated and address any concerns you may have regarding your job description: running the free world. We understand you’ve already had a few meetings with your new staff as well as the outgoing executive team. Great. They’re a terrific bunch, with years — in many cases decades — of experience in running the federal government. We reviewed your file and noticed some gaps in work experience. It appears that, aside from a brief internship of sorts with your father, this is your first job as an employee. We can imagine the anxiety you must feel, and so we are making available our full catalog of 6,452 training videos, which you can access from your desktop computer. We highly recommend you watch them all. But because you have never been an actual employee, we thought it important to introduce you to your 314 million or so new supervisors — your bosses. This will be awkward, and we can explain the math further in our first in-person orientation session, but it’s important you know that fewer than half of your new bosses wanted to hire you. More of your new bosses actually wanted to hire another job candidate, but we have a hiring process at this company that dates to its founding more than two centuries ago — and you know how some companies are resistant to change. But we digress … To get you up to speed for your Jan. 20 start date (that’s just about two months, so make time to study!), here is an overview of the people you will be working for. For brevity, we will call them “Americans.” We recognize that you’ve already connected with many Americans who are much like you — the older-than-65, non-Hispanic white males who did not serve in the military and earn far more than the median household income, $53,482. You no doubt will find comfort surrounding yourself with those like-minded Americans, but we encourage you — for the good of the company and for your own professional success! — to get to know your other bosses, as well, including:)

— Your 90-day return policy  Early signs that a new employee is not a good fit – and may need to go – J.T. O’Donnell  (DIERSEN: After I transferred from IRS to GAO in 1980 when I was 31 years old, to see how good a fit I would be, my Democrat GAO superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates soon asked me many questions to see how strong a Republican I was. When they learned how strong a Republican that I was, they quickly tried to get rid of me, but they learned that because I had transferred to GAO from another federal agency, I was not under any kind or probationary period at GAO. They were furious.)
