— Its New National Identity Crisis Makes The U.S. More Like The Middle East
https://hotair.com/headlines/archives/2018/09/new-national-identity-crisis-makes-u-s-like-middle-east/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Instead of “Americanizing” the Middle East, he notes, that the U.S. has become increasingly “Middle Easternized.” The polarization of American society is so extreme that the Republican and Democratic parties resemble warring tribes that see each other as existential threats. A large number of Republicans seem to regard loyalty to the person of Donald Trump as more important than their commitment to any higher goals like the rule of law or preservation of democracy internationally. The Democratic Party, for its part, has shifted away from the broad class-based coalitions of the New Deal and Great Society to advocacy on behalf of its component identity groups: African-Americans, women, the LGBT community and the like.)

I should write a book about those in the Milton Township Republican Central Committee, DuPage County Republican Central Committee, and Illinois Republican Party who focus on promoting age discrimination. Those who promote age discrimination also promote discrimination against those who are Trump supporters, Protestant, conservative, patriotic, Republican, American, White, male, rich, gun owners, German American, draft avoiders, and/or those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time.)

How ‘Hyphenated Americans’ Won World War I
— Nearly a quarter of the men sent to fight in Europe in 1918 were foreign-born. – Geoffrey Wawro (DIERSEN: My grandfather on my mother’s side fought the Germans in WWI. In 1844, his ancestors immigrated to Chicago from what is now Germany.)
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/12/opinion/how-hyphenated-americans-won-world-war-i.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Without American intervention, the war would have probably ended in a German victory, or sputtered to a stalemate, leaving the Germans in possession of much of France, Belgium and Russia. The victory, though, came at significant cost: In the Meuse-Argonne offensive, as the operation came to be known, the Americans alone suffered some 122,000 casualties, including 29,000 dead. That more than a million Americans were fighting in a European war was surprising enough. But even more surprising was the men themselves: Pershing’s soldiers, known as the American Expeditionary Force, were in some units as likely to be foreign- as American-born. Thanks to a wave of immigration, the United States had changed significantly at the turn of the 20th century, going from a nation whose white population was 60 percent British and 35 percent German at the start of the Civil War into a turbulent “melting pot” in time for the Great War: 11 percent British, 20 percent German, 30 percent Italian and Hispanic and 34 percent Slavic.)

See if your retirement nest egg is future-proofed (DIERSEN: My and my wife’s being able to “afford” my taking my Democrat GAO superiors’ early retirement “offer” in 1997 when I was 49 years old emboldened them to force me to take their “offer.” They knew a) what my Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) pension would be, b) what my wife’s salary was, c) what our federal health, dental, and vision insurance subsidy would be, d) what we had already saved for our retirement, e) what our other savings were, f) that we had no debts, g) that we had no dependents, h) the value of our home, i) the value of the cars that we owned, j) etc. My $51,864 CSRS pension is only 41% of what my $125,325 GAO salary was in 1997 in today’s dollars.)

I transferred from IRS to GAO in 1980. Of course, my Democrat IRS superiors wanted my Democrat GAO superiors to a) force me to take a $19,203 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980; b) keep me off audits of IRS; c) get rid of my mentor in 1987; d) not promote me; e) always rank me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes; f) give me unfair performance expectations and appraisals; and g) force me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old.)

In windows-open summers sometimes the detritus could be seen floating along. No one seemed worried. It was like living in Disneyland where you thought nothing bad could happen to you. But walking alone on the sidewalk past our school after the funeral, I felt out of kilter. I became aware of a feeling I’d never experienced as a child. I felt afraid. Alone. Past-month marijuana use among Coloradans age 12 and older is 85 percent higher than the national average. Marijuana-related ER visits have increased 52 percent since Colorado legalized pot. Beyond tragically, beyond unacceptably, the Illinois Republican Party (IRP), DuPage County Republican Central Committee (DCRCC), Milton Township Republican Central Committee (MTRCC), etc. lets people who reject the traditional family, right to life, immigration, Second Amendment, illegal drugs, equal opportunity (no race or gender based preference giving), and other planks in the IRP platform and in the Republican Party platform hold leadership positions. Worse yet, the IRP, DCRCC, MTRCC, etc. lets these platform plank rejecters drive people like me who support the aforesaid planks out of the IRP, DCRCC, MTRCC, etc.)
https://www.americanthinker.com/articles/2018/09/enemies_within.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: For decades, we have allowed the American left (public education, Hollywood, the Democratic Party, and fake news media) to indoctrinate our children, teaching them that America sucks and is the greatest source of pain and suffering for people both here and abroad. We’re still allowing leftists to mold and shape our kids into their anti-Christian radical progressive image as early as preschool. Consequently, we have young adults in positions of power and influence who literally hate their country. Like sleeper cells, leftist young enemies-within operatives are seeking to bring down by any means necessary America as founded, openly advocating violence and treason. Mega-millionaire pro-football player Colin Kaepernick is an operative of the leftist young enemies within movement. Nike executives who gifted Kaepernick hero status for hating his country are also members of the young enemies within movement. Facebook and Twitter are active members of the movement, boldly censoring conservative, patriotic, and Christian speech, claiming that such talk is hateful. Starbucks executives believe the leftist lie that America is overrun with rabid racists. Therefore, Starbucks sales clerks were instructed to lecture customers about race when ordering coffee. I suspect that Starbucks clerks lectured only white customers. Upon suggesting that a Millennial family member visit Mt. Rushmore while visiting South Dakota, that person’s venomous response was, “I wouldn’t go across the street to visit those guys.” Clearly, public school taught my young white relative that the men carved in Mt. Rushmore were evil racist white slave-owners.)

Needless-to-say, the larger the percentage of anti-Trumps in a precinct, municipality, township/ward, county, and state, the more that Trump supporters should be concerned about their personal safety. I sold tires, automotive services, and major appliances for Firestone Stores 1970-1971; collected delinquent taxes for IRS 1971-1980; and audited federal agencies for GAO 1980-1997. I should write a book about transferring between federal agencies. I took a $19,203 (26%) pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980.)
https://www.pressreader.com/usa/chicago-tribune/20180910/281805694821732
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Changing careers is becoming the rule rather than the exception. According to a long-term study by the Labor Department, people born in the years 1957 to 1964 held an average of 11.7 jobs from ages 18 to 48.)
— More retirees filing for bankruptcy – Elliot Raphaelson (DIERSEN: If your retirement is financially secure, and your critics/opponents were asked what are the reasons for that, what would they say? For me, my critics/opponents would say a) that my parents, my grandparents, my great grandparents, and the rest of my ancestors discriminated against minorities and discriminated against females and that I directly benefitted from that discrimination, b) that I was born a healthy White male, c) that I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth and that I have always been privileged, d) that I avoided the draft, e) that the federal government grossly overpaid me, f) that I married someone who has lots of income and savings, g) that we gave up trying to have children, we did not adopt, and we did not become foster parents, h) that my federal retirement benefits are much too generous, and i) I have never given lots of money to churches like they do. In my defense, I have always spent less money on immediate pleasures than my peers, I have always put the maximum into IRAs and Roth IRAs, and I earned a) a job-related bachelor’s degree when I was 21 in 1970 and job-related master’s degrees when I was 27, 31, and 48, b) job-related professional certifications when I was 30, 32, 41, 45, 47, and 48, and c) a job-related professional license when I was 32.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/success/savingsgame/tca-more-retirees-filing-for-bankruptcy-20180831-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A new study from the Consumer Bankruptcy Project indicates that the rate of bankruptcy among Americans ages 65 and older has tripled since 1991. More people ages 55 to 65 also are filing for bankruptcy. I am not surprised. People are going into retirement with more debt, including much higher mortgage debt. For example, in 1995, only 22 percent of 65 year-olds had mortgage debt; now 38 percent do. The average mortgage debt in 1995 was $27,300; now it is $73,000. Those are scary numbers. The proportion of retirees who have defined-benefit pension plans has decreased substantially. According to the Pension Research Center, a mere 23 percent of U.S. workers have such a pension plan. Today’s retirees are more dependent on defined-contribution plans, such as 401(k)s. With a defined contribution plan, the retiree must manage the portfolio himself or herself or pay a financial planner to do so. Most retirees don’t have the financial expertise to manage their own portfolio. Our educational system is inadequate when it comes to teaching us how to effectively manage a portfolio. Another important factor is age of retirement. Many employees would like to work longer before retiring, but most corporations offer early retirement incentives so they can hire younger workers at lower salaries. When an early retiree looks for other work, he/she faces age discrimination, with practically no recourse, despite anti-discrimination laws. Most people who need to retire early are forced to accept Social Security at age 62, and their benefit is significantly reduced. Although it would be beneficial to wait until age 70, most retirees simply can’t afford to. Another factor is health-care costs. These costs increase at much higher rates than other costs. Many corporations have reduced the health-care benefits for retirees. For seniors, the costs of Medicare, supplemental health care and prescription drugs keep increasing at high rates. Congressional representatives talks a lot about controlling prescription drug costs, but they have been unsuccessful in doing so. Those who use Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage find that as drug costs keep increasing, they are in the bubble much earlier in the year, resulting in much greater costs. The drug companies have substantial lobbies in the U.S., which has resulted in higher drug prices for U.S. citizens than for those overseas. Dental costs increase also for seniors more than for the general population, and Medicare doesn’t cover these costs. Many companies have either no dental coverage or inadequate coverage for retirees. Another factor is longer expected life. Although it is great news that we are living longer, there are other implications. The longer we live, a larger the nest egg that is needed going into retirement to ensure that our money will last for as long as we live. It’s hard to build a larger asset base going into retirement if corporations want their workers to retire early. Moreover, as expected life expectancy increases, insurance companies reduce monthly payments for lifetime annuities. Another factor is required support for other family members. Because tuition costs have increased dramatically, most college graduates are graduating with high debt. As retirees assist their children with this debt, it puts more of a burden on their financial well-being. So, it is not surprising that older people are increasingly filing for bankruptcy.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: In addition to all the buzz around the mayor’s race, the November election for Illinois governor looms. Both incumbent Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democratic Challenger J.B. Pritzker were there. Rauner spoke about the importance of the Mexican American community in Illinois. “We are very proud in Illinois, we have one of the largest, most vibrant Mexican-American communities anywhere in the world. We are very proud here,” said Rauner, who has attended the parade every year since he’s been governor. — Justice Department must operate free from political influence – Editorial (DIERSEN: I have always been a Republican. A major reason why I agreed to suffer a $19,203 (26%) pay cut in today’s dollars in 1980 to transfer from IRS to GAO was that GAO claimed that it was “free of political influence.” I soon learned that was completely false. GAO hired me in 1980 because it could not find a qualified Democrat, minority, female, younger person, or veteran who would take the job. Were it not for federal Civil Service protections, GAO would NOT have hired me in 1980, would NOT have let me work there for almost 18 years, and would NOT have promoted me in 1986. — A Celebration of Spanish Conquest Ends in New Mexico. Not Everyone Is Pleased. – Simon Romero
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/08/us/new-mexico-la-entrada.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: For as long as nearly anyone here can remember, Hispanic residents have donned the garb of conquistadors and European nobility once a year to celebrate the 1692 reconquest of New Mexico from Native Americans who submitted to the Spanish Empire after a grisly revolt. But after escalating protests by Native Americans who saw the reenactment as a racist attempt to gloss over atrocities carried out by Spanish colonizers, the annual tradition known as the Entrada officially came to an end on Friday, replaced by a multidenominational prayer gathering to begin the annual Fiesta de Santa Fe. The move, aimed at forging reconciliation in the 411-year-old city, was an attempt to avoid the kind of turmoil that authorities elsewhere in the country are grappling with over Confederate monuments and other symbols of historic brutality, including statues honoring European conquerors. The end of the Entrada is rekindling debate over how to portray New Mexico’s complex history, marked by centuries of enslavement of Native Americans, military conquest by Spain and the United States and attempts to depict the state as a place where Hispanics, Native Americans and Anglos, or non-Hispanic whites, peacefully coexist.)

— Obama takes his anti-Trump message to Orange County, California – once a GOP stronghold – Chris Woodyard (DIERSEN: One could compare and contrast Orange County in California with DuPage County in Illinois.)
https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2018/09/08/barack-obama-takes-anti-trump-message-orange-county-california/1239129002/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Democrats are counting on a strong showing in California in November’s elections in the battle to take control of Congress. They are targeting several congressional districts. While Democrats have gained, Republicans overall still have a registration edge in the county — 563,992 to 516,121 at the start of the year, according to the California Secretary of State’s office. Demographics have changed with an influx of Latinos, Asians and other immigrants. The county’s economy has evolved away from manufacturing and to more services and high-tech jobs that attract white-collar workers who are inclined to vote Democratic. Like much of the country, unemployment is low in Orange County and the economy is strong, meaning turnout could be more dependent on anger about Trump and his policies rather than dissatisfaction with the state of the nation.)

— Congress must grow to check the administrative state – James C. Capretta (DIERSEN: All during the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO 1980-1997, the agency shrank in either absolute or relative terms. The agency is just a shell of what it once was.)
http://www.aei.org/publication/congress-must-grow-to-check-the-administrative-state/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Congress could begin to reassert itself by building stronger institutional support for the development of specific legislative responses to emerging issues and problems. The existing congressional support agencies — the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), the Government Accountability Office (GAO), the Congressional Research Service (CRS), and the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (Medpac) — have real strengths and expertise. They provide regular, highly valuable reports to Congress, and, in the cases of GAO and Medpac, make relevant recommendations for legislation to Congress. But because these agencies are designed to provide nonpartisan support to Congress, neither party relies on them heavily to develop new policy initiatives that could serve as the basis for legislation. When Republicans and Democrats write bills to address emerging issues, they want ideas that are technically sound, of course, but they also want to champion changes that conform to their philosophical approaches to governing. Congress shouldn’t breach the political independence of the traditional support agencies; they provide objective analysis and should be above the partisan fray. Instead, Congress should look to expand support for their legislative efforts by building new pockets of institutional support that combine technical expertise in key issue areas with a policy development mission.)
