— Trump-supporting mayor Roger Claar appears to survive re-election scare – AP
http://wgntv.com/2017/04/04/suburban-mayor-and-trump-backer-in-tight-re-election-race/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: BOLINGBROOK, Ill.  — A longtime suburban Chicago mayor who held a fundraiser for President Donald Trump last year was holding on to a narrow lead in his re-election battle with a union organizer backed by top Democrats. With all precincts reporting late Tuesday, Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar held a 62-vote lead over Will County Commissioner Jackie Traynere. The county clerk’s office said vote by mail ballots postmarked by April 4 and provisional ballots remain to be counted. The vote tally will be made official April 24. Traynere spokesman Tom Bowen acknowledged because of the number of outstanding votes, Traynere is facing an “uphill battle.” “Jackie called him and congratulated him on a great race,” Bowen said. Claar did not return telephone calls seeking comment late Tuesday.)

— Some Suburban Elections Still In Question With Many Close Races – Bernie Tafoya
http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2017/04/05/some-suburban-elections-still-in-question-with-many-close-races/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Tuesday’s suburban elections saw a handful of possible upsets and several tight contests, with some races for mayor separated by only a handful of votes. In southwest suburban Bolingbrook, incumbent Mayor Roger Claar faced his strongest challenge in years, triggered by his support for President Donald Trump. Last September, Claar invited the then-presidential candidate Donald Trump to a fundraiser at the village-owned Bolingbrook Golf Club. Democratic mayoral candidate Jackie Traynere is one voter who hasn’t forgiven Claar. “We went and petitioned the Mayor with 1,100 signatures and we asked him not to invite Donald Trump here [Bolingbrook]. We didn’t feel his message of hate was in step with the community,” Traynere said. Trump’s opponent, Hillary Clinton, won 66 percent of the vote in Bolingbrook, but Claar appeared to hold on for a narrow victory on Tuesday. He led by 104 votes, according to unofficial vote totals in Will and DuPage counties, but Claar acknowledged the race likely won’t be decided for a couple weeks.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Washington Rep. Pramila Jayapal has teamed up with Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders to introduce a bill that would make four-year public college free for families making less than $125,000, and make community college free for all. The $600 billion cost would be funded by a tax on Wall Street speculation. The College for All Act would also reduce student-loan debt by cutting all student- loan interest rates for new borrowers in half; enable existing borrowers to refinance loans based on the interest rates available to new borrowers; and prevent the federal government from profiting off the student-loan program. Its sponsors say the bill would reduce student debt by allowing existing federal aid to cover other college costs, including books, housing and transportation. It would require states and tribes participating in the program to cover the full cost of college for their poorest students. It would also increase the size of work-study programs. The bill’s co-sponsors, all Democrats, include Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., and Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass. It’s been endorsed by the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association and the American Association of University Professors, among others.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: It’s harder to get a good job  In 2016, according to data from the Economic Policy Institute, the unemployment rate for college grads was 5.6%, only a tenth of a point higher than the pre-recession rate in 2007. Not too shabby. What’s a concern, though, is underemployment — a figure that includes jobless people looking for work, part-time workers who want to go full time, and unemployed people who have recently given up looking. The current underemployment rate for young college grads? 12.6%. A three-percentage-point jump from 2007. The picture is worse if you don’t have a college diploma: The underemployment rate for high school grads is 33.7%. (in 2007, it was 26.8%.)

TIMES
— Journalism essential in era of PR – David Giuliani  (DIERSEN: Ever-increasingly, journalists and newspapers a) promote the Democrat Party platform, the Libertarian Party platform, and the Green platform and b) help elect Democrat candidates and reelect Democrat candidates.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The other day, one of my sources suggested I get a job in corporate public relations. That’s where the money is, he told me. While he may be right, he’s overlooking the reason journalists do what they do. Journalists believe in finding truth, or reporting it as close as objectively possible. They also believe in holding government accountable to its citizens, among many other responsibilities. There is a gratification in being able to inform readers of something they didn’t know or news they can use in their everyday lives. Landing a position in corporate or government PR is a lot more lucrative than working at a newspaper or a TV station. It’s been that way for a long time. It’s a good job, and many of those folks are helpful in communicating to news outlets. But PR and marketing positions have drawbacks. One of them in particular is that many PR folks must toe the company line. It’s hard to get to objective truth when there’s a built-in bias. What news outlets can’t do is let government and other institutions become less accountable to the public. The official line can’t become the only line. The news release from a government agency or corporate entity shouldn’t be treated as gospel. Many newspapers are hungry for stories to fill their pages. Enterprising groups, including the conservative Illinois Policy Institute, sense that desperation. A few years ago, the institute formed the neutral-sounding Illinois News Network, which offers stories with a conservative bent to newspapers around the state. The Illinois News Network is nothing to scoff at. Recently, it hired a big player in northern Illinois’ media world as its news director — Dan McCaleb, editorial director of Shaw Media, which runs a bunch of papers in the suburbs. (Full disclosure: I worked for the institute for five months after working for a Shaw Media weekly.) Another conservative group is distributing supposedly local newspapers that favor Gov. Bruce Rauner and other Republicans. Starved Rock Country has its own version, the Illinois Valley Times. I have yet to find one writer in that paper who has burned any shoe leather anywhere near here. Many of its writers hail from the Philippines. Covering La Salle County from across the world is no substitute for reporters on the ground holding the powers that be accountable. I’ll do what I can to avoid ending up as a PR flack for corporate types. The work of a journalist is too essential.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Only 46 percent of the students who were about to graduate in 2016 with bachelor’s degrees had a job offer, according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, which does a survey of graduates each year. That’s an improvement over 2009, when only 41 percent had offers as the nation was coming out of the Great Recession, but it’s far below the 80 percent who were graduating with jobs before the recession, said association researcher Kenneth Tsang. In addition, pay levels have been stuck. Although college costs have been rising faster than inflation and the average college student with student loans leaves college with about $30,000 in debt, the survey has found that salaries aren’t budging. In 2016, the median salary for graduates who found jobs was $47,358, essentially flat for the last five years, Tsang said. Pay ranged from $65,000 for math majors to $31,000 for social science majors and $20,000 for those in the performing arts.)

https://www.bloomberg.com/politics/articles/2017-04-01/gop-paid-white-house-s-priebus-almost-500-000-filing-show
(FROM THE ARTICLE: White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus received almost $500,000 from the Republican National Committee in 2016 as he led the party to wins at both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue, according to a financial disclosure form released Friday. Priebus served as chairman of the RNC from 2011 until joining the Trump administration in January. He was paid a base salary of $225,000 in 2016 plus two bonuses totaling $175,000. The party also spent just over $57,000 on rent for a Washington-area home. At the beginning of 2017, the committee paid him an additional $33,000. Appointed by President Donald Trump shortly after the election last year, Priebus has attempted to draw on his long-standing relationships with Republicans in Congress to help shape and shepherd Trump’s agenda. A fixture in Wisconsin politics for most of his adult life, Priebus worked as a litigator at Milwaukee law firm Michael Best & Friedrich LLP, where he became partner in 2006. He went on leave from the firm when he became party chairman and more formally severed ties at the end of 2016, when he received a $450,000 equity buyout. He also was paid a $50,000 bonus by the firm and had $96,408 from his capital account returned to him. Priebus also reported assets totaling at least $350,000 in an American Funds mutual fund and two bank accounts.)

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/31/us/politics/ivanka-trump-and-jared-kushner-still-benefiting-from-business-empire-filings-show.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, President Trump’s daughter and son-in-law, will remain the beneficiaries of a sprawling real estate and investment business still worth as much as $741 million, despite their new government responsibilities, according to ethics filings released by the White House Friday night. Ms. Trump will also maintain a stake in the Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C. The hotel, just down the street from the White House, has drawn protests from ethics experts who worry that foreign governments or special interests could stay there in order to curry favor with the administration. It is unclear how Ms. Trump would earn income from that stake. Mr. Kushner’s financial disclosures say that Ms. Trump earned between $1 million and $5 million from January 2016 to March 2017, and puts the value of her stake at between $5 million and $25 million.)

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES

http://chicago.suntimes.com/opinion/my-familys-history-tells-the-story-of-the-great-american-divide/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Some 15 million people in the U.S. receive disability payments. In some of the 136 counties with the highest rates of disability use across the country, almost all of them rural with a white majority, more than 1 in 6 working-age adults receive federal disability payments. Once on disability, as the Washington Post points out, recipients rarely get off the program. By and large, these are not individuals who fell off a roof and broke their back or lost limbs in an industrial accident. They suffer from back pain or diabetes or emphysema or liver cirrhosis or some other lifestyle-induced ailment. But, perhaps more importantly, they live in communities where job opportunities are few, especially for those who don’t have a college education. But disability programs are just a fraction of the government’s assistance programs. A 2015 study by the U.S. Census Bureau showed that 52.2 million people, or roughly 1 in 5 Americans, received help in 2012 from one of six means-tested programs. And, of course, this doesn’t count Social Security or Medicare, which pays out to individuals on average far more over their lifetimes than they contributed in taxes.)

DAILY HERALD
— 3 things you need to know if your basement is flooded  (DIERSEN: What factors increase the likelihood of your basement flooding? Factors for 915 Cove Court in Wheaton include the subdivision being built in a watershed area and a former septic field, the tremendous amount of surface and subsurface storm water that flows onto the lot during and after heavy rains, the inadequate number of storm sewer inlets in the subdivision, the disruption, obstruction, and improper connection of 6″ and 4″ subterranean drainage lines when the home was built, the pouring the foundation walls on cracked footings, the improper installation and intentional blockage of exterior foundation footing tiles, the installation of only one sump pump when there should have been two or even three or even four, the many long and wide cracks in the basement floor, and the fact that all the storm water that gets into the storm sewer system on the lot is limited to the capacity of one 4″ pipe.  What factors decrease the likelihood of your basement flooding?  For 915 Cove Court, they include the installation of steel reinforcement rods in foundation walls, the installation of interior footing tiles, my paying $900 when the home was built in 1984 to have all nine of the home’s downspouts directly connected to Wheaton’s storm sewer system, my installing a backup sump pump, my unobstructed and properly connecting the aforesaid subterranean drainage lines to Wheaton’s storm sewer system, my paying for unobstruction (the removal of stones) from some of the exterior footing tiles, my adding hundreds of feet of French drains and many storm sewer inlets on the lot and connecting them directly to Wheaton’s storm sewer system, my properly sealing the many long and wide cracks in the basement floor, my paying for conversion to an overhead sewer system before the basement was finished in 2005, and my paying for a 20-W whole house natural gas backup electric generator for the home.  Since 1984, because of Wheaton’s failure/refusal to assure that building codes were enforced when the subdivision was constructed and 915 Cove Court was built, I have been forced to spend many thousands of dollars and many hundreds of hours of my labor to stop basement flooding.)

(FROM THE WEBSITE: So we have got the ball rolling… On March 15 2017 Dupage County has had their Annual Liquor Commission Meeting for Unincorporated Liq. License Holders. At this meeting it was discussed by those in attendance the need for Video Gaming to stay competitive with other Businesses. Dan Cronin the Liquor Commissioner explained that we “Collectively” as a group need to contact our District Board Members and express to them how the current ordinance is effecting our ability to stay competitive. After the meeting a group of us stayed to have our own meeting an come up with a game plan. March 28, 2017 the same group attended the Dupage County Board Meeting and a few of us spoke during the Public Comments portion of the Meeting to express our desire to be competitive to other businesses that allow Video Gaming. Well, we have been heard a few Board Members have reached out to Jeremy (Jt’s Porch) and myself and are interested in having a conversation about Video Gaming. Plus at the end of the Board Meeting where the Board Members have open discussion, Video Gaming was discussed between Mr. Zay (Dist. 6), Mr. Puchalski (Dist. 1), Mr. Krajewski (Dist. 3), Mrs. Khouri (Dist. 5), and Mr. Cronin (Chairman). Please take a minute to send off a Email to your District Board Member to let them know you support your local Bars/Restaurants desire to remain competitive. If you need any help contacting your District Board Member I have all Email addresses. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Long before Donald Trump ever became a credible presidential candidate, let alone the commander in chief, the former reality TV star was guided by one animating principle: “If they screw you, screw them back 10 times as hard.” Trump’s desire for revenge played out in public on Thursday when, in an effort to spook conservative members of his own party, the President lumped the Freedom Caucus — a collection of conservative Republican lawmakers — with Democrats and pledged to “fight them” in 2018. Trump and his White House feel betrayed by the conservative Republicans. Many backed Trump early in the 2016 campaign and stood by him during some of the toughest trials of the campaign. But when it came to passing his first conservator legislative goal — health care reform — the conservatives revolted en masse and killed the bill.)

ABC7
— THE OFFICER MANAGER WHO WORE A WIRE AGAINST EX-CONGRESSMAN SCHOCK – Chuck Goudie
http://abc7chicago.com/news/the-officer-manager-who-wore-a-wire-against-schock-/1826860/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The I-Team looked into who it was that worked as an FBI informant inside the ranks of former Illinois Congressman Aaron Schock. Aaron Schock’s attorneys say the staffer who was wired for sound was his Peoria district office manager. Although not named in this week’s new Schock court filing, the only district manager during that time period was Bryan Rudolph, a political science and government degree-holder from Wheaton College. Prosecutors are likely to make Rudolph a key component of the government’s corruption case against former Schock, unless Schock’s lawyers can stop it. It was obvious from the time Schock was charged that federal agents had help from inside. His lawyers now claim in a new filing this week that Schock’s Peoria district manager “covertly record private conversations with and between Mr. Schock and his staff;” claiming the manager “stole” thousands of email messages and illegally took congressional office records. The manager then, whom the I-Team identified as 32-year-old Bryan Rudolph, consented to be an informant only after Schock had announced his resignation in March 2015, according to the defense filing. Rudolph, whose resume states that he began working for the federal government’s Social Security Administration in 2007, did not return messages or answer emails on Thursday concerning the undercover work or claims that evidence he gathered had been illegally obtained. Schock’s attorneys rip the government’s use of the staffer-turned-informant; in the court record they say that he broke the law by stealing information from the Illinois Republican’s files. They call it a trail of improper – if not outright illegal – acts. Schock is accused of numerous federal corruption charges including wire and mail fraud, theft of government funds and falsifying federal election filings. Prosecutors say he pocketed thousands in improper vehicle reimbursements, camera equipment and proceeds from selling tickets to the World Series and Super Bowl. Attorneys for Schock plan to ask that the case be thrown out because of how the informant evidence was gathered – or at least that the evidence collected by the office manager be barred from trial.)

— Democrat Mendoza: Illinois Republican Party ‘Creepily Stalking’ Her – Derrick Blakley
http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2017/03/30/democrat-mendoza-illinois-republican-party-creepily-stalking-her/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: An increasingly bitter political battle between two top Illinois officials has entered a new phase: car wars. As Democrat Susana Mendoza left the state capital Thursday and entered her state-purchased vehicle, she was followed by an Illinois GOP operative who shot video of her. Republicans later tweeted about Mendoza’s “loaded,” luxurious ride. The implication is that state government may be broke, but Mendoza’s living large on the taxpayer’s dime. Mendoza was furious, saying in a counter-tweet that the Illinois Republican Party was “creepily stalking me.” It’s the latest flap between Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and Mendoza over who’s doing the most to look out for taxpayers. But does the GOP’s charge really hold up? Mendoza’s ride is a 2016 Ford Explorer, purchased used in January, with 16,431 miles. Total cost was $32,279. An invoice provided to CBS 2 shows Gov. Rauner’s main ride is newer, larger and more expensive. It’s a Ford Expedition XLT with extended length. It was purchased new, last December, by state police, at a cost $54,000. That is 67 percent more than Mendoza’s car. A Rauner spokesperson points out state police purchased the new vehicle – not Rauner’s office – even though the governor uses it. State police, of course, report directly to the governor.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Nearly three years after the start of what was then called “The Great War,” the United States entered World War I with a congressional declaration of war against Germany on April 6, 1917. Until then, President Woodrow Wilson had maintained a policy of non-intervention, and a strong antiwar sentiment had swept the U.S. as casualties mounted on the battlefields across Europe and beyond. But the growing threat of a powerful German navy and its fleet of submarines attacking American shipping, plus evidence that Germany was trying to draw Mexico to its side, persuaded Wilson to join forces with Great Britain and France.)
