(FROM THE ARTICLE: Wheaton voters will elect the city’s first new mayor in 12 years next spring, and two city council veterans already have announced bids for the post. Mayor Michael Gresk is stepping down after three terms, clearing the path for a new leader to take the city’s helm. John Prendiville and Phil Suess have emerged as the first two mayoral candidates seeking to succeed Gresk, who first was elected in 2007. Prendiville served on the council from 2007 to 2011 and again since 2013 after an unsuccessful run to unseat Gresk as mayor. His at-large seat on the council also is up for election in April 2019. Suess ran unopposed last year to retain his seat representing the North District. His fourth term on the council doesn’t expire until 2021. Councilwoman Suzanne Fitch said Wednesday she intends to seek re-election to the other at-large seat. Candidates will begin filing their nominating petitions for the city’s municipal offices in November. Prendiville is the managing director and senior managing counsel for The Bank of New York Mellon Corporation, a firm that acts as a trustee for municipal bond issues. If elected, he said his background will serve him in helping to keep the city on “very good financial footing” since Wheaton weathered the economic recession. “The type of work I’ve done in the legal world is not adversarial. I’ve always been part of transactions where people are working together toward a common goal,” he said. That consensus-building work will translate to leading city council meetings that, under Gresk, are orderly and on track, Prendiville said. “I want to be a leader of this intelligent and dedicated group,” Prendiville said of his council colleagues. In his last mayoral run as Gresk’s challenger, Prendiville said he visited “at least 80 percent of homes” of municipal election voters. But he said Gresk “deservedly” had “a tremendous amount of support.” Gresk captured 57 percent of the vote. “I wasn’t running against him. I was just running because I was a little bit ambitious there,” Prendiville said. Suess is a partner in an investment consulting firm. He said his 14-year tenure on the council makes him the best candidate for the office. “I just think it’s the consistency of positions over time,” said Suess, who has lived in Wheaton for 30 years. “I’ve been a very strong advocate of living with the money we have.” He’s also sat on the DuPage Water Commission board for the past eight years. Wheaton is the second-largest customer of the agency that supplies Lake Michigan water to most of the towns in DuPage County. “I joined that commission in August of 2010 when they were basically in the depth of their problems with respect to their debt and have been part of the team that has turned around the water commission since January of 2011,” Suess said. Fitch said she’s running for a second term to continue addressing flooding and economic development issues as the council’s liaison to the Downtown Wheaton Association, a group of shops and restaurants. An attorney, Fitch highlighted her push for a new program to install sidewalks in neighborhoods for kids to walk safely to and from school. She also was a vocal supporter of lowering the speed limit on residential streets from 30 mph to 25 mph. The new limit went into effect Aug. 1. “I’ve been responsive to resident concerns, and I’ve really taken the time to engage the residents to address their issues,” Fitch said. Filing paperwork is expected to become available through the city clerk’s office later this month.)

Frank Cesare – of the Pioneer Valley Sportsman’s Association, which has hosted the show for more than 40 years – said the decision followed complaints the group received after the Parkland shooting and as gun-control advocates planned to protest. “We did the ban to try to calm the situation down and show them we are willing to work with them,” he said, referring to the protesters. Cesare said that the ban on AR-15s also would remain in place for April’s show and that the club is “waiting to see” what the mood is like before deciding on shows later in the year. But the move has forced the club into the gun culture war that has gained new energy across the United States since Parkland. “We didn’t see this coming,” Cesare said. “I’m bewildered we’re in the middle of this. . .I got no problem with the protesters. Rauner said that a candidate for office giving away cash is “outrageous.” Rauner, at a bill signing Monday that dissolved the DuPage County Board of Elections, said he did give Wilson’s foundation $100,000 to help pay people’s property taxes. Wilson kicked in $200,000 of his own and gave away tens of thousands of dollars in cash Sunday to people with other needs. Rauner said if any of his money was handed out in cash, he was going to demand it back. “None of it was the governor’s money, his money was given in checks,” Wilson said. Wilson said he has been giving away about $300,000 to people in need for more than 20 years. “It doesn’t really matter to me what people think, because you should look at my record, it proves I’ve been doing it for years. And people have to make their own decisions from that, but certainly I’m not going to do anything that break any laws,” Wilson said. Wilson and Rauner both said that at no time did they ever ask for people’s votes. (FROM THE EDITORIAL: When it comes to internet shenanigans at election time, the Russians don’t have the market cornered. A few members of the U.S. Congress — Democrats and Republicans — have set up “fake news” websites designed to sway voters in their direction so they can win re-election. Not cool. Tim Johnson of the McClatchy News Service reported that three sitting senators who are in the midst of tough re-election campaigns and one House member have created sites that look like internet news pages, but their aim is to put positive spin on the candidates. For example, Nevada Republican Sen. Deal Heller’s website, NevadaSenateUpdates.com, even has weather and calendar widgets on the top of its page, just like those of a conventional newspaper website. The “paid for by Heller for Senate” is in dim gray type on a black bar at the bottom, Johnson reported. On the other side of the aisle is a the faux internet news site put up by the Missouri Democratic Party — The Missouri Download — to promote the re-election chances of Sen. Claire McCaskill. Johnson reports that its declaimer is almost impossible to read. According to election watchdog groups, these are not isolated incidents, but a troubling trend. “These websites are designed with one thing in mind: to trick the reader into thinking they’re a legitimate news source. And anyone who says otherwise is being disingenuous. A label tucked at the bottom of a web page isn’t enough,” said Aaron Sharockman, executive director of PolitiFact, a fact-checking website. Brendan Fischer, of the Campaign Legal Center, a nonpartisan group on campaign finance and democracy issues, agreed. “You’d have to scroll all the way to the bottom and read the fine print to learn that these sites are actually generated by partisan political actors who are trying to win an election,” Fischer said, adding that structure of the websites indicates that “there is a degree of trust in the news media, and that’s why these candidates and parties are trying to emulate traditional news media sites.” While these campaign websites aren’t illegal, as the source and campaign information are included (albeit it in teeny-tiny print), there are certainly deceitful. All voters — Democrats, Republicans and independents — should be irked. Voters deserve better. Those in office, or seeking office, should want to get information out to the public that is positive to their campaigns and that costs doubts on their opponents. But this must be done in the open. When creating websites for these political purposes, make it crystal clear — in bright, big and bold letters — who is responsible for the content. Then the voters can judge for themselves the credibility. If the public doesn’t push back now on this dubious tactic, the proliferation will continue. It must stop.)

Everywhere else, committeepersons are elected in their precincts — and it’s not easy convincing people to run for that office, particularly in overwhelmingly Republican areas. However, those county chairs can fill vacancies, and the appointed committeepersons don’t have to live in the precincts they represent, so a big push is on to get counties to a minimum level of 75 percent coverage. Some local party officials have also been told that the million-dollar contribution from Pritzker is just the first round. More party-building money is coming. By contrast, as of last week Gov. Bruce Rauner’s campaign had given a total of about $33,000 divided between nine county and township Republican organizations since the March primary. The Illinois Republican Party chipped in another $25,000 during the same time period for a handful of county organizations. J.B. Pritzker’s campaign has contributed $5.7 million to various Democratic groups and candidates since the primary, including big bucks to several suburban and Chicago political organizations.
