(FROM THE ARTICLE: According to state law, “Sessions of the General Assembly shall be held at the seat of government: Provided, that the Governor may convene the General Assembly at some other place when it is necessary, in case of pestilence or public danger.” But what does “some other place” mean? Does it include multiple locations, like Mike Madigan’s den, Don Harmon’s kitchen and legislators’ homes all over the state via webcam? And if the governor balks, will legislators have to show up in the flesh in Springfield to change the law? Above and beyond that, Springfield Republicans clearly are getting tired of sitting quiet while Gov. J.B. Pritzker runs everything. Note the recent big flap about slow payment of jobless insurance claims. I can’t say I blame them, any more than I can blame Illinois’ mostly Democratic congressional delegation for getting its back up over President Donald Trump’s tap dance that he’s in charge and will give orders except when something goes wrong and it’s your fault. Chicagoans don’t want a governor/emperor any more than they want a president/king. If we’re not careful, the natural tendency of strongmen to emerge in times of crisis will persist long after COVID.)
