— They Were Warned – Kathy Valente (DIERSEN: QUESTION TO ASK CANDIDATES: What
have you done and what will you do to discourage the sale and use of pot?) https://illinoisfamily.org/uncategorized/they-were-warned/ (FROM THE ARTICLE: Big
Marijuana and its foolish proponents easily convinced Illinois state lawmakers
that legalization would decrease black market trade and ease the burden on our
criminal justice system. IFI warned them that this naive notion was
contradicted by the facts, and we shared ample evidence from states that had
already approved “recreational” marijuana. The evidence is clear: the black
market had been thriving because of legalization. Now we read that the
California cannabis industry is in big trouble and want lawmakers to do
something about it. What’s their problem? The black market is doing 73 percent
of California’s marijuana business – or $8.7 billion. California is
considered to be the largest cannabis market in the world. While 2019 is not
yet over, it’s estimated that their total marijuana sales will top nearly $12
billion. Yes, the black market is thriving on the left coast, growing by leaps
and bounds, and threatening to bury a quasi-legitimate (sic) industry. So much
for the influx of revenue they’re anticipating.)

Democratic presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg says employees at his news

on investigating their boss. Bloomberg, billionaire founder of Bloomberg News,
was asked in a CBS News interview about rules put in place when he announced
his candidacy: The organization’s reporters are not allowed to probe him and

— The Impact Of Unemployment On Male Well-Being – Adi Gaskell (DIERSEN: I have
been underemployed since 1976 and unemployed since 1997.) https://www.forbes.com/sites/adigaskell/2019/12/06/the-impact-of-unemployment-on-male-wellbeing/ (FROM THE ARTICLE: The
impact of unemployment on well-being is well documented, although research from
a few years ago suggested that it’s “good work” rather than just work that is
the key to mental well-being. With the traditional gender roles presenting the
role of men as the bread winner for the family, it seems logical that
unemployment would pose a particular burden on men, and that was the subject of
a recent report from the IZA World of Labor. The report reveals that the number
of working-age men outside the labor force is on the rise around the world,
with this corresponding with a rise in stress and other mental health issues,
including depression and anger. Indeed, male unemployment is also linked to a
range of physical health concerns, including suicide and substance abuse that
are raising mortality rates across the United States. The researchers believe
the issues of male unemployment are strongest among low-skilled labor, with
those in work also suffering from declining wages and status. This often
ultimately results in men dropping out of the labor force entirely. Many of the
issues facing unemployed men revolve around a loss of hope, and such issues
were consistent around the world. That many unemployed men resort to opioid
abuse merely exacerbates their slide into poor mental well-being. This is often
accompanied by marriage failure and a decline in civic or religious
participation. One’s social standing was a key factor in this, as the image and
self-esteem of many working class men is wrapped up in their hard work ethic,
so being unemployed carries considerable stigma.)

AARP has spiked the publication of an investigative story about systemic age
discrimination in recruitment and hiring by the U.S. government. The 4,000-word
story is one of two articles that the AARP commissioned for the January 2020
edition of the AARP Bulletin. The other story, said to be an overview of age
discrimination in employment, is still slated for publication. The AARP, which
has 38 million dues paying members, did not respond on Sunday to requests for
comment by email and telephone. Why would the AARP, which claims to advocate
for Americans aged 50+, jettison an important story about age discrimination in
hiring by the U.S. government? A source close to the matter, who asked not to
be identified, said senior officials at the AARP killed the story due to
political considerations and to avoid risking the loss of federal grant
funding. The AARP in 2017 was awarded $74.4 million for job training services
from the U.S. Department of Labor and $9.6 million from the Internal Revenue
Service to provide tax assistance to seniors. According to Axios, the AARP is
one of the largest media companies in the country, earning more than $174
million annually in media-based advertising revenue. The AARP Bulletin has the
2nd-highest circulation in the country. The AARP and its nine subsidiaries
earned an estimated $1.65 billion in annual revenue in 2018. Age Discrimination
Little media attention has been paid to the federal government’s role in
perpetuating age discrimination in the United States. Since 2012, the U.S.
Office of Personnel Management’s (OPM) has operated a program called the
Pathways “Recent Graduates” Program that permits federal agencies to
discriminate based on age in the recruitment and hiring of workers. The program
was created by former President Barack Obama in 2010 through Executive Order
#13562. It allows federal agencies to restrict applications for job vacancies
to individuals who graduated from a qualified educational institution within
the preceding two years. The program not only harms older workers by
arbitrarily excluding them from federal jobs but it sends a message to the
private sector that age discrimination is acceptable. Pursuant to a 2017
Freedom of Information Act request, the OPM said about 93 percent of applicants
hired for 92,193 jobs under the Pathway “Recent Graduate” Program from 2012 to
2017 were under the age of 40. The Pathways “Recent Graduates” Program is a
classic example of “disparate impact discrimination,” where a seemingly neutral
policy has disproportionate and adverse impact on older workers. The OPM has
said the program will continue until it is invalidated by a sitting president.
So far President Trump has shown no inclination to halt the program. A source
said the remaining AARP article refers briefly to age discrimination by the
federal government. Political Headwinds The AARP increasingly finds itself in
difficulty due to its conflicting roles as the self-proclaimed advocate for
older Americans and as the leading purveyor of supplemental health insurance to
older Americans who are Medicare recipients.)

I was NOT qualified to transfer in from IRS as a GS-12 Step 5, currently
$93,592/year. They insisted that I accept a downgrade to GS-9 Step 10,
currently $74,024/year, a pay cut of $19,568/year (21%) in today’s dollars.
They never would have done that if I had been a Democrat, minority, female, or
veteran. I had passed the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979. I had
almost completed the requirements for a master’s degree in accounting from
DePaul. I had earned an MBA from Loyola in 1976. I had worked for IRS for
almost 9 years, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels,
currently $82,579-$93,592/year. I had earned a bachelor’s degree in management
from NIU in 1970. Much of what I did for IRS was very similar to what I would
be doing for GAO including interviewing, gathering data, summarizing data,
analyzing data, report writing, and making recommendations.) https://www.nasdaq.com/articles/why-60-qualified-is-enough-according-to-a-recruiter-2019-11-24 (FROM THE ARTICLE: If
you’re a woman who has ever embarked on a job search, you may have heard the
buzz: Women and men tend to approach job searching differently. In 2013, HP
released a report stating women usually apply for jobs only if they meet 100%
of the requirements. In many cases, women view a job description as a list of
skills and qualifications they should already have instead of skills they can develop
as they learn the job. Men, on the other hand, usually apply if they meet 60%
of the requirements. While this statistic certainly does not apply to all job
seekers, it does resonate with many women in the workforce.)

— Onboarding: What HR professionals need to know Onboarding is an essential
but commonly overlooked component of an organization’s success – Geraldine
Grones (DIERSEN: I should write a book about my first 2 year working for GAO in
1980 and 1981. My Democrat superiors, supervisors, and coworkers did everything
that they could to get me to go back to IRS, and failing that, to destroy any
possibility that I would ever get promoted. In my defense, I completed the
requirements for a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul in 1980. I passed
the Certified Internal Auditor’s examination on my first attempt in 1981 and
became a licensed CPA in 1981.) https://www.hcamag.com/ca/specialization/employee-engagement/onboarding-what-hr-professionals-need-to-know/193371
