— American Civil Rights activist reconnects with children she met during work to desegregate South (COMMENT: Have you supervised a Black activist? I did during all of the last 8 years that I worked for the Democrats who ran GAO’s Chicago office. He was a younger Black CPA who always led the office’s many Black events. My Democrat GAO superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates did everything that they could to turn him against me. They stressed to him that I was conservative, Republican, Protestant, and 100% German American. They stressed to him that my ancestors had been in America since 1844 but that none of them joined the Union Army. They stressed to him that I lived in Crete 1948-1972 and that I had lived in Wheaton since 1978. They hinted/implied/argued/shouted at him that I gave him unfair job assignments, performance expectations, and performance appraisals. They shouted at him that I sabotaged his career advancement. They stressed to him that I supported the equal opportunity (no race or gender based preference giving) plank in the Republican Party platform. But they stressed the most to him that was an active member in a class action lawsuit that charged GAO with reverse discrimination and age discrimination. In September of 1997, when I was 49 years old, they succeeded in forcing me to take their early retirement “offer” that expired at the end of that month. I was not eligible for regular retirement for another 6 years and they made it clear that if I did not take their “offer,” my next 6 years would be a living hell. They gave my younger Black activist subordinate my job and my preferred corner office. I should write a book about the aforesaid.)

— Pat Gill running for eighth term as Woodbury County Auditor – Caitlin Yamada (COMMENT: Government is nasty/vicious. Politics is nasty/vicious. I should write a book about my critics/opponents in DuPage County who since 2000 have discouraged me the most from running for DuPage County Auditor, something that I never wanted to do. I would focus on those discouragers who have taken the most/biggest adverse actions against me. I would focus on those who have ignored/dismissed/belittled/badmouthed my qualifications the most. I worked for GAO for almost 18 years, the last 11 years of which at the GS-13 Step 1-10 Levels, currently $118,439-$150,075/year. I worked for IRS for almost 9 years, the last 5 1/2 years of which at GS-12 Step 1-5 Levels, currently $97,079-$110,020/year. I became a licensed CPA. I passed the CPA and Certified Internal Auditor examinations on my first attempt. I became a Forensic Accountant, Certified Financial Services Auditor, Certified Government Financial Manager, and Certified Fraud Examiner. I earned master’s degrees in finance, accounting, and business. In my role as an Association of Government Accountants (AGA) Chicago Chapter Executive Committee member 1983-1996, I tried to recruit former DuPage County Auditor Bill Jacklin and his deputy Jim Rasins. I recruited Rasins to speak at an AGA Chicago Chapter training event. I worked hard to elect Rasins County Auditor in 2000 and 2004 and I worked hard to elect Bob Grogan County Auditor in 2008, 2012, 2016, and 2020. Grogan’s deputy was Peter Balgemann who is one of my relatives.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: In the earliest days of Union enlistment in New York City, anyone willing to volunteer was welcome at recruitment offices—including the foreign-born. Language barriers proved no obstacle, particularly among Germans. After all, German support had helped Abraham Lincoln win the presidency in 1860. After the fall of Fort Sumter and the call for 75,000 militia to suppress the rebellion, Lincoln wisely concluded that a war to save the Union must not be an exclusively native-born undertaking. So he launched a concerted effort to lure marquee commanders from various ethnic backgrounds, regardless of their politics (though he did resist abolitionist Frederick Douglass’ early pleas for the enlistment of free Blacks). One of Lincoln’s first such acts was to order his secretary of war to appoint “Col. Julian Allen, a Polish gentleman, naturalized,” who proposed “raising a Regiment of our citizens of his nationality, to serve in our Army.” After some initial resistance from the War Department, Allen got his commission. Army regulations at the time explicitly stated: “No volunteer will be mustered into the service who is unable to speak the English language.” That rule would simply be ignored. From the outset, the restriction hardly stemmed the early enthusiasm of the foreign-born to don the U.S. Army uniform, even if the uniforms themselves reflected more the ethnic background of the recruits than the cohesion of the supposedly united states. That spring, German-born New York Herald correspondent Henry Villard seemed “surprised”—but clearly proud—to observe freshly minted “infantry dressed in the genuine Bavarian uniform….Prussian uniforms, too; the ‘Garibaldi Guards’ in the legendary red blouses and bersaglieri [Italian infantry] hats,” as well as “‘Zouaves’ and ‘Turcoes’ [North African infantrymen], clothed as in the French army, with some fanciful American features grafted upon them.” Before long, Lincoln granted a request by Carl Schurz, the recently named U.S. minister to Spain, to abandon his post in Madrid and raise a regiment in New York. Although his initial recruitment efforts fell short, Schurz won a military commission anyway, and served in the Army of the Potomac. In 1863, however, he earned damning criticism when his men fled from a Confederate assault at Chancellorsville. Most officers subject to such castigation would have faced demotion or dismissal. But Schurz still exerted enormous influence—over the German-born community as well as Lincoln—for his tireless work in the 1860 campaign. A gifted orator, he managed to convince Lincoln to continue backing him even as he leveled injudicious criticism (privately, at least) on his commander-in-chief. Then there was the case of Franz Sigel, a 36-year-old German-born general who notched an even more dubious record in the West. From the outset of the war, however, Sigel proved a magnet for German recruitment. “I Fights Mit Sigel” became a rallying cry among German-speaking soldiers. Each time Lincoln sought to downgrade Sigel, the outcry from Germans proved overpowering. In 1864, when Lincoln briefly faced a third-party reelection challenge, many of those expressing support for the insurgency cited the president’s alleged injustices against Sigel. IRISH LEADERS, MIXED RESULTS If German Americans contributed the largest foreign-born contingent in the Federal army, Irish Americans proved a close second. Some 150,000 Irishmen took up arms for the Union.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Why did they fight? What were they fighting for? Recruitment posters in the New York Historical Society provide hints at the answers. One poster reads: Patrioti Italiani! Honvedek! Amis de la liberté! Deutsche Freiheits Kaempfer! (Italian patriots! Hungarians! Friends of liberty! German freedom fighters!) Then, in English, it urges “250 able-bodied men . . . Patriots of all nations” to fight for their “adopted country.” One immigrant mother gave testimony in 1863 to an antislavery convention as to why her 17-year-old son was fighting for the Union. “I am from Germany where my brothers all fought against the Government and tried to make us free, but were unsuccessful,” she said. “We foreigners know the preciousness of that great, noble gift a great deal better than you, because you never were in slavery, but we are born in it.” Following the failed Revolution of 1848, thousands of young Germans fled to America. They took up arms in what they saw as yet another battle in the revolutionary struggle against the forces of aristocracy and slavery. “It isn’t a war where two powers fight to win a piece of land,” one German enlistee wrote to his family. “Instead it’s about freedom or slavery, and you can well imagine, dear mother, I support the cause of freedom with all my might.” In another letter written to his family in Europe, a German soldier gave a pithy explanation of the war: “I don’t have the space or the time to explain all about the cause, only this much: the states that are rebelling are slave states, and they want slavery to be expanded, but the northern states are against this, and so it is civil war!”)

— Biden has forced the Texas National Guard to take control of a 2.5-mile stretch of the U.S. border with Mexico. The Texas National Guard has repeatedly denied U.S. Border Patrol agents access to the Shelby Park area in Eagle Pass, Texas. The Civil War began when South Carolina refused to allow federal authorities to access Fort Sumter.
