In my defense, I earned a bachelor’s degree in management from NIU in 1970, I earned an MBA from Loyola in 1976, I passed the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979, and I earned a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul in 1980.

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Some findings:

1. The report is thorough, covering the period from 1860 to 2000. It is well done.

2. Wheaton and former University of Washington historian Tracy McKenzie served on the committee. As far as I can tell, he was the only historian.

3. The report acknowledges that Wheaton College was founded on Potawatomi land.

4. Wheaton College extension campuses in Wisconsin (Ojibwe) and South Dakota (Lakota) were also owned by native Americans.

5. Wheaton College was founded in 1853 by abolitionists. Its first president, Jonathan Blanchard, “brought impeccable credentials” to the school.

6. Students of color graduated from Wheaton under Blanchard’s presidency.

7. Following the passing of the 13th Amendment ending slavery in the United States, Jonathan Blanchard “never matched his earlier zeal for the abolition of slavery with a commensurate zeal for the promotion of racial equality.” Neither he nor his successor, his son Charles, promoted racial integration.

8. In the first 60 or so years, the number of Black students attending Wheaton “was rarely above two or three.”

9. After 1920, the campus “had become unwelcoming, if not openly hostile, to students of color.” There are documented cases in which white students refused to live with, or eat beside, Black students.

10. During the presidency of Oliver J. Buswell (1926 to 1940), Wheaton “quietly implemented an admissions practice that systematically precluded Black applicants from matriculating at Wheaton.”

11. During the presidency of V. Raymond Edman (1940-1965), Black students began to return to Wheaton.

12. During World War II, Wheaton received a “temporary influx” of Japanese and Japanese American students who would have otherwise been sent to Japanese internment camps.

13. In 1960, Edman “squashed” a report by the Anthropology and Sociology Department that rejected “a scientific basis for racial difference,” called on white evangelicals to repent of racial discrimination, and envisioned Wheaton as a leader on issues of racial reconciliation in the Christian college world. The report also called for the hiring of a Black faculty member and the lifting of unofficial restrictions on interracial dating and marriage.

14. In 1965, under the leadership of president Hudson Armerding (1965-1982), an NAACP chapter was formed at Wheaton.

15. The college was “divided on the merits of the Civil Rights Movement’s recognized leader, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.”

16. Many college alumni were outraged in 1968 when Armerding allowed Wheaton’s Edman Chapel to be used for an ecumenical memorial service honoring the recently assassinated Martin Luther King. But “while trying to respond to growing demands on campus for greater attention to issues of racial justice,” Armerding “was also determined to reassure suspicious College constituents who viewed aspects of civil rights activism as incompatible with Christian orthodoxy.”

17. During the 1980s, Wheaton created programs to attract poor and minority students, established an office of minority affairs, and formed ethnicity-specific student groups. At the same time, it struggled to diversify its faculty.)

For instance, while SFFA rejected the idea that race fundamentally determines an individual’s personality and character traits, the August 14 documents specifically assert that a school’s decision to foster racial diversity invariably leads to “livelier and more informative classroom discussions, breakdown of prejudices and increased cross-racial understanding, and heightened cognitive development and problem-solving skills.” The August 14 documents also encourage racially targeted retention policies to maintain the presence of individuals of certain racial demographics among matriculated students. These measures may include adopting need-based financial aid programs or instituting “DEI-focused offices, campus cultural centers, clubs and affinity groups with a race-related theme.” Similarly, the August 24 document argues that campus cultural centers, clubs, or affinity groups with a race-related theme are never “subject to heightened legal scrutiny under Title VI because of the race-related theme of the group, if students are not excluded or treated differently because of their race.” In the same vein, the August 14 documents suggest that colleges and universities may obtain and review the racial demographic data of applicants and the student body to evaluate their efforts to attract and retain individuals of certain racial demographics, as long as the data is not directly used in admission decisions. Additionally, the August 14 documents say that colleges and universities still have broad latitude, even after SFFA, to explicitly consider race outside of the college admissions context, especially in recruitment and college-readiness programs. One stark example is that the documents state that colleges can legally target their recruitment efforts at specific high schools based on their racial demographics. The August 14 documents advise that using race to target attendees of college-readiness programs or student information sessions is still permissible, if these events are technically open to students without regard to their race.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Gun owners in Illinois are dealing with a world of unconstitutional gun laws. Aside from the 2nd Amendment challenges to a semi-automatic firearm and magazine ban, which has gone through the southern and northern districts and is now in the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, they may also be dealing with a 5th Amendment violation issue. The gun and magazine ban does not just prohibit the sale of certain semi-automatic firearms and magazines; the ban also requires a self-registration registry. Registration requirements start in October. The violation of the 5th Amendment rights of Illinoisans comes from this mandatory registration that is being put on gun owners with a deadline of January 1, 2024. The registration mandate requires gun owners to give the State a list of all their newly “illegal” guns. The registration mandate includes all “banned” semi-automatic firearms and parts. In other words, anything that the state of Illinois may consider an “assault weapon.” That doesn’t seem right, does it? The state bans your perfectly legal (and in common use) guns & magazines and then makes you turn yourself in? The 5th Amendment reads: “No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or Naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of war, or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offense, to be twice put in jeopardy of life, or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.” Attorney Thomas Maag, who will be filing documents in court against the state of Illinois within the next few weeks, said, “We are actually working on a motion on the 5th Amendment argument as we speak. Frankly, we’re really concerned when this whole registration period starts if it’s not previously enjoined, that, with the vagueness, with a whole host of issues, people would be incriminating themselves.” Attorney Thomas Maag had previously filed the 5th Amendment argument as part of his previous challenge in the Southern District, but it had been postponed, so the law is currently in effect. Maag will be filing that 5th Amendment challenge in the hopes of protecting gun owners from having to incriminate themselves and face criminal consequences if they don’t register. We will most likely see this work its way through the courts. With any luck this could possibly get a preliminary injunction on the registry component of this law before it goes into effect in October.)
