(FROM THE ARTICLE: State Representative David S. Olsen (R, Downers Grove) for Bruce Rauner’s anti-hate crime bill recently filed in Springfield. The anti-hate crime bill, HB 2390, aims to change sentencing for those who commit hate crimes in Illinois. Rauner announced his plans for the new hate crime legislation in early March in response to the anti-Semitic crimes that have increased both locally and nationally. In a March 8 press release, he said, “We cannot stay silent on hate. We cannot stay silent when families in our community are in danger. The promise of ‘Never Again’ requires us to take action.” Rep. Olsen recently echoed those words in a statement of his own, “Those who would attack others, verbally or physically, based on their race, color, creed, religion or other perceived classification, need to know their behavior will not be tolerated and that the consequences for such actions will be severe.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The other day, one of my sources suggested I get a job in corporate public relations. That’s where the money is, he told me. While he may be right, he’s overlooking the reason journalists do what they do. Journalists believe in finding truth, or reporting it as close as objectively possible. They also believe in holding government accountable to its citizens, among many other responsibilities. There is a gratification in being able to inform readers of something they didn’t know or news they can use in their everyday lives. Landing a position in corporate or government PR is a lot more lucrative than working at a newspaper or a TV station. It’s been that way for a long time. It’s a good job, and many of those folks are helpful in communicating to news outlets. But PR and marketing positions have drawbacks. One of them in particular is that many PR folks must toe the company line. It’s hard to get to objective truth when there’s a built-in bias. What news outlets can’t do is let government and other institutions become less accountable to the public. The official line can’t become the only line. The news release from a government agency or corporate entity shouldn’t be treated as gospel. Many newspapers are hungry for stories to fill their pages. Enterprising groups, including the conservative Illinois Policy Institute, sense that desperation. A few years ago, the institute formed the neutral-sounding Illinois News Network, which offers stories with a conservative bent to newspapers around the state. The Illinois News Network is nothing to scoff at. Recently, it hired a big player in northern Illinois’ media world as its news director — Dan McCaleb, editorial director of Shaw Media, which runs a bunch of papers in the suburbs. (Full disclosure: I worked for the institute for five months after working for a Shaw Media weekly.) Another conservative group is distributing supposedly local newspapers that favor Gov. Bruce Rauner and other Republicans. Starved Rock Country has its own version, the Illinois Valley Times. I have yet to find one writer in that paper who has burned any shoe leather anywhere near here. Many of its writers hail from the Philippines. Covering La Salle County from across the world is no substitute for reporters on the ground holding the powers that be accountable. I’ll do what I can to avoid ending up as a PR flack for corporate types. The work of a journalist is too essential.)

Now, I haven’t studied it. I think we should do a thoughtful analysis of what’s happening in these other states. I’m hearing a lot of trouble,” he said. “My friends in Colorado have told me some pretty terrible things about addiction problems and behavior problems, etc. over there in Denver.” To sum it up, Rauner said, “I just believe we’re conducting a massive human experiment as we legalize these drugs.”  One Democrat running for the right to take on Rauner next year endorsed the legislation. “Legalizing recreational marijuana is a social justice issue,” said Ald. Ameya Pawar in a statement. “It will reduce the amount we spend as a society arresting and jailing people for low-level nonviolent offenses, when our criminal justice system should be focused on reducing violence,” he said.)

It’s sometimes embarrassing to read the front pages of the major newspapers, festooned as they are with anti-Trump editorializing masquerading as news. Nonetheless, if you take the view from 30,000 feet, better this than a press acquiescing on bended knee, where it spent most of the Obama years in a slavish Pravda-like thrall. Every democracy needs an opposition press. We damn well have one now. Taken together — and suspending judgment on which side is right on any particular issue — it is deeply encouraging that the sinews of institutional resistance to a potentially threatening executive remain quite resilient. James Madison’s genius was to understand that the best bulwark against tyranny was not virtue — virtue helps, but should never be relied upon — but ambition counteracting ambition, faction counteracting faction. You see it even in the confirmation process for Neil Gorsuch, Trump’s supremely qualified and measured Supreme Court nominee. He’s a slam dunk, yet some factions have scraped together a campaign to block him. Their ads are plaintive and pathetic. Yet I find them warmly reassuring. What a country — where even the vacuous have a voice. The anti-Trump opposition flatters itself as “the resistance.” As if this is Vichy France. It’s not. It’s 21st century America. And the good news is that the checks and balances are working just fine.)
