He did not buy a new car until he was 45 in 1967 and it was a bottom of the line 2-door Chevy. He died suddenly of heart failure in 1969 when he was 47 and I was 21. My mother was raised on a farm in Grant Park and never attended high school.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— DuPage committee kills effort to revoke video gaming ban – Gary Gibula  (DIERSEN: OUTSTANDING! At the DuPage County Finance Committee meeting Tuesday morning, June 13, 2017, no motion was made to recommend lifting the county’s ban on video gambling in unincorporated areas. During the public comment period, those who spoke in favor of keeping the ban included Bill Bryan, Kathy Gilroy, Heidi Holan, Luke Holan, and me. During county employee Chad Shaffer’s presentation concerning video gambling, county board members asked many questions and expressed their views concerning the issue. Many thanks to those county board members who would have voted against recommending lifting the ban if a motion had been made. Attendees at the meeting included Paula McGowen and John Zaruba.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/naperville-sun/ct-nvs-dupage-committee-rejects-gaming-st-0614-20170613-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Advocates of keeping the video gaming ban contend the negative effects of gambling outweigh any benefits. “We should be thinking of marriages and families broken up by gambling, how many jobs have been lost,” Bill Bryan, of Naperville, said. “Those factors should be weighed into the equation.” Heidi Holan, of Glen Ellyn, compared gambling to a “get rich quick” scheme. “How many of you warn your children about that?” she asked. “Is that the type of moral value you want?” “It has a trickle-down effect to family members,” said Luke Cohen, of Glen Ellyn. “I’m only 18, so I can’t gamble and I can’t drink, but I still understand the effect of gambling. This ban needs to stay in place.” . . . Cronin commented on the issue following Tuesday’s County Board meeting. “We owed it to the community and the business owners who are experiencing some adversity to come on in and make their case,” Cronin said. “I have some empathy for those folks, but I think there’s a larger issue here about who we are as a county. The committee spoke, there was due process and the people had their day.”  The issue of repealing the video gaming ban still could be revisited in the future if a committee member chooses to bring it up again, officials said.)

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/06/10/opinion/sunday/vietnam-war-public-service-message-from-the-class-of-67.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: My generation was shaped to a considerable degree by Vietnam and, at least for the men, by the draft. Whether and how to elude military service was a constant during our time in college and beyond, and for many of us the wrenching debates and decisions of the tumultuous 1960s affected the rest of our lives. Some ended up in Vietnam, some opted for the Peace Corps or other national service, some became conscientious objectors, but all were touched by the draft. So it is not surprising that at our college reunions — including the 50th of my class of ’67 at Harvard last month — both the men and the women spent a lot of time going over what Vietnam and the choices we made in those now-distant years meant for us. Twenty-five years earlier, a session on Vietnam had become intensely emotional and confessional as classmates recalled their war or their antiwar struggles; this time, we were more retrospective, reflective and ruminative. What was surprising was that many who rose to speak in the two-and-a-half hour session declared it was a shame that the draft, and more broadly the notion of a couple of years of national service before plunging into careers and families, had been abandoned. How could guys who expended so much passion and energy eluding the draft regret its demise?)

AMERICAN THINKER
— Convert, Pay, or Die – William L. Gensert
http://www.americanthinker.com/articles/2017/06/convert_pay_or_die.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Convert, pay, or die is the set of choices Islam offers infidels.  Coincidentally, this is also what today’s progressives and the Democratic Party offer nonbelievers, climate “deniers,” white males, heterosexuals, patriots, blue-collar workers, farmers, miners, people without a college degree, the religiously devout, Republicans, and everybody else choosing not to buy into the party’s version of what America is and what the nation owes both its citizens and the world. Our country has collectively “slipped into madness.”  Hatred in the name of diversity and political unity has become a goal in itself – and it is ascendant in modern culture, all compelled by leftist ideology. No matter how many are killed, maimed, or merely terrified in the name of Allah, for progressives, the problem will always be Islamophobia, or an ignorant populace too uneducated to understand the inherent nuance of the “religion of peace.” Those who suggest enhanced screening for immigrants from Islamic nations or even a limited suspension, as President Trump proposed, are greeted with rioting in the streets, for to look askance at a man who expresses an explicit desire to kill in the name of Allah is tantamount to outright racism. Islamic men between the ages of eighteen and forty-five years old commit more than 90% of terrorist attacks.  Yet singling out people who fit those criteria for extra scrutiny is profiling and therefore implicit racism deserving of nothing less than outright excommunication from polite society – along with, of course, the total dissolution of one’s life, career, and safety.)

— DIERSEN HEADLINE: Anti-Trumps say “Reince Priebus’ job security comes from few wanting his job.” GAO hired me in 1980 because it could not find a qualified Democrat, minority, female, younger person, or veteran who would take the job.  IRS hired me in 1971 because it could not find a qualified Democrat, minority, female, or veteran who would take the job.  The Post Office hired me in 1966 because it could not find a qualified Democrat, minority, female, or veteran who would take the job.  One reason why the Democrats who ran GAO did not get rid of me sooner than they did in 1997 was that the agency was almost always under hiring freezes.

— A look at where some of those protesting, commune-living ‘hippies’ are today – Jean Murphy  (DIERSEN: What were you doing in 1967?  I was a full-time student at UIC and a part-time mailman for the Park Forest Post Office. I lived with my parents and brother in Crete. I sold my 1966 Pontiac Tempest Sprint and bought a 1968 Oldsmobile 442. I saved money for college expenses.)
http://www.dailyherald.com/entlife/20170603/a-look-at-where-some-of-those-protesting-commune-living-hippies-are-today
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Nostalgia reigns supreme this summer as we approach a series of 50th anniversaries of pivotal moments in our history. This summer San Francisco is commemorating the Summer of Love when the hippies arrived in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood in 1967. Closer to home the latest version of the Grateful Dead, known as Dead & Company, has concerts scheduled at Wrigley Field on June 30 and July 1, and Navy Pier is hosting “Exhibitionism,” an exhibit of Rolling Stones memorabilia, through July 30. Next year and the years that follow will surely generate remembrances of such major events as the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Chicago’s 1968 Democratic National Convention, Woodstock and the shootings at Kent State, to name a few. So what has happened to all of the people who were activists and hippies in those days? How have they lived their lives since those tumultuous years?)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Two local state senators — Sue Rezin, R-Morris, and Jason Barickman, R-Bloomington — voted against the measure. But in the House, state Reps. Jerry Long, R-Streator, David Welter, R-Morris, and Tom Demmer, R-Dixon, supported the legislation. Only five other Senators joined Barickman and Rezin in voting no — Republicans Chapin Rose, Neil Anderson, Michael Connelly, Dale Fowler and Chris Nybo also opposed. HB 607 cleared the Senate 43-7-1, and the House vote was 75-34-3, so it’s fair to say there was bipartisan support. But still, as our readership area is represented almost entirely by Republicans, it’s interesting to note when the votes diverge.)

They do NOT want you to hear news that promotes the Milton Township Republican Central Committee resolution against video gambling.  They do NOT want you to hear news that opposes the promotion of booze, gambling, pot, and other vices.)

FEDERAL NEWS RADIO
— Poking the retiree beehive – Mike Causey  (DIERSEN: I am one of the 70,215 federal retirees in Illinois. Needless-to-say, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes would be overjoyed if Trump would cut if not end my Civil Service Retirement System pension, my Social Security, and/or my COLAs.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Currently there are 2,625, 261 federal retirees or their survivors.  Right now, as you read this, another 300,000 active duty federal workers are eligible to retire and will, sooner or later, do so.  That’s a lot of people. Go into any McDonald’s, from Scottsville, Ky., to Pismo Beach, Calif., at any time of the day and you will likely see a former fed, or six, chowing down and talking.  The same for your local grocery store whether it is in Washington, D.C., to Washington Court House, Pa.  Or on Guam or American Samoa.  Former feds, and their wallets, purses or credit cards, are just about everywhere. Years ago a very sophisticated federal retiree — my mother — who lived near Fort Myers, Fla., explained that lots of people continue to eat out after retirement “we just do it earlier.”  So we may not see them, but they are definitely there.  According to data from the Office of Personnel Management just over 17 percent of all federal retirees have monthly annuities of $4,000 or more.  Another 22 percent get between $3,000 and $2,999 while 14 percent get $1,000 to $1,999.  Fewer than 9 percent get $1,000 or less per month from their civil service retirement benefit.   Most of the current retirees are under the older CSRS system which fully indexes their annuities to inflation regardless of age.   Workers retiring under the FERS system get cost of living adjustments (starting at age 62) that are partially indexed to inflation.  At least since the Reagan administration. But life-after-retirement (for current feds too) could change drastically if Congress goes along with the Trump administration plan to charge current workers 6 percent more for their retirement benefits, to reduce COLAs for CSRS retirees by giving them 0.5 percent less than the actual increase in inflation each year, by eliminating COLAs completely for FERS retirees (9 out of every 10 current workers is under FERS and would become part of the Zero Diet COLA group), and to eliminate an annual “gap” payment that now goes to FERS retirees until they reach age 62 and become eligible for Social Security. Although they too retire under an enhanced version of the civil service retirement program, many politicians at the House, Senate and now White House level view federal workers either as clowns, drones or creatures from the swamp.  They lap up studies — usually from conservative think tanks —showing federal workers are overpaid and ignore those that show feds, particularly at higher grade and skill levels, are dramatically underpaid compared to their private sector counterparts in Washington, Houston, San Francisco and New York City. Reducing the buying power of federal workers (by making them pay more for their pensions) and retirees, by reducing or eliminating COLAs in the future, could hurt many communities that depend on the federal pay or pension dollar to stay afloat.  So how big a deal is the federal-postal retiree dollar.  Check out this chart from the OPM.  It shows the number of retirees (and their survivor annuitants in each state, and the value of their annuity payments.  The chart does not include the value of Thrift Savings Plan accounts the retirees have or any Social Security payments they received for covered work before or after they were in government:)
