(FROM THE LETTER: Let me try to follow the tortured logic of your editorial of Nov. 15, “Illinois’ giant pacifier tastes like SALT.” I oppose the GOP tax plan because it gives permanent tax breaks to the wealthy and a mixed bag of temporary tax breaks and tax increases to middle-income families. Particularly objectionable to Illinois is the reduction or elimination of the deductibility of state and local taxes (SALT) from federally taxable income. Itemizers in our state under these Republican plans will indeed pay a federal tax on Illinois income taxes paid, as well as sales taxes and property taxes. In brief, the GOP tax plan will have Illinoisans paying a tax on a tax. You defend the elimination of this deduction on federal returns because it lessens the impact of the state and local taxes on our families. You call this deduction “a pacifier.” This “pacifier” is currently worth $24 billion to Illinois families. This is hard-earned money they don’t have to send to Washington. It’s a real break that lessens the impact of state and local taxes on the savings of families in our state.)

Being able to pay less federal income tax by deducting mortgage interest and real estate tax encouraged me to buy a) a new town home in University Park in 1972, b) a studio condo in the Outer Drive East building in 1974, and c) a one bedroom condo in that building in 1976. Being able to pay less federal income tax by deducting mortgage interest and real estate tax encouraged my wife and I to a) buy 1017 East Harrison in Wheaton in 1978 and b) have 915 Cove Court built in Wheaton in 1984.)

Kyle McCarter, R-Lebanon, noted that President Donald Trump easily won the 15th Congressional District — and many parts of Illinois outside Chicago — with many voters choosing Trump for his immigration policy. “Yet what the governor has done is support codifying illegal immigration,” McCarter said. “This means a lot to people. Trust is a hard thing to re-establish once you’ve lost it.” . . . McCarter said he was one of three Republican senators who endorsed Rauner during the 2014 primary. “I made the case with social conservatives that look to me for leadership that what had been done in the past decade was fiscally immoral,” McCarter said. “Therefore, we counted on him to right the ship, fiscally, (and) make it better for families. Rosanna Pulido of Springfield hasn’t been a fan of Rauner, who she said has “never been a Republican.” She has been deeply involved in trying to stop illegal immigration including being a “minuteman” on the Arizona-Mexico border in 2005. She is also traveling to Washington, D.C., this week to with “a group of people who have had loved ones killed by illegal aliens” to push legislation to cut off federal funds going to sanctuary cities or states. She said victim family members “tried several times” to contact Rauner through his office, and “each time they were turned away.” Kukowski’s response did not address questions about Pulido’s assertion about the attempts to set up a meeting. “A lot of conservative Republicans are looking for a new home,” said Pulido, who unsuccessfully ran for the U.S. House in the 5th Congressional District in 2010.”)

Bruce Rauner grew up in the upscale North Shore suburbs of Deerfield and Lake Forest as well as Scottsdale, Ariz., and his father was a high-ranking executive at electronics giant Motorola. Rauner went to Ivy League colleges, became enormously wealthy as a private equity investor and was the owner of nine luxury homes and ranches when he launched his campaign. His campaign was clearly sensitive to how that might play with voters as it sought from the first to portray him as a regular guy. Early campaign ads featured Rauner with his $18 Timex watch and a two-decade old family van that he said his children dubbed the “rolling trash can.” The Chicago Tribune asked in 2014 about comparisons to wealthy private equity investor turned politician Mitt Romney, and Rauner bristled: “He came across as a blue blood, I’m a regular guy. I drink beer. I don’t drink Courvoisier or whatever the hell that stuff is. I drink beer and I smoke a cigar and I ride a Harley and I love to fish.” . . . Records from U.S. Censuses taken between 1910 and 1940, the latest year publicly available, clearly show that both of Rauner’s maternal grandparents were born in Wisconsin — Clarence Erickson in 1901 and Viola Erickson (nee Wedin) in 1900.  In other words, neither of them were immigrants. What’s more, the census shows that Viola’s mother — Rauner’s great-grandmother — was also born in Wisconsin. Viola’s father, while born in Sweden, emigrated to the U.S. at age 6 in 1868. As for Clarence, the census describes him as speaking English and having a seventh grade education. In the 1940 count, his profession was listed as “buttermaker.”)

Former President Barack Obama launched the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program in 2012 for people who have been in the U.S. since 2007, were younger than 16 at the time of their arrival and were younger than 31 as of 2012. Those enrolled can legally drive and work, but they must reapply every two years. They are considered a low priority for immigration enforcement, though they are not protected from deportation. The Trump administration has until Tuesday to eliminate the program or face legal action from a group of Republican state lawmakers. Illinois has the nation’s fourth-largest population of DACA recipients — the highest share in the Midwest. At least 42,376 Illinoisans have been approved since March 31, according to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Current students, high school or GED course graduates and veterans are eligible for the program. They must be at least 15 to apply, unless they’re in removal proceedings or have a final removal or voluntary departure order. (FROM THE ARTICLE: The Republican National Committee is expected to approve a resolution condemning racism and white supremacy at its summer meeting in Nashville — but don’t call it a rebuke of President Trump. “This has nothing to do with the president,” said the resolution’s sponsor, New Jersey RNC committeeman Bill Palatucci. “This is the RNC saying that racism and bigotry have no place in America.” Palatucci, an attorney who served as general counsel to Trump’s presidential transition committee, said that he began drafting the resolution on August 13, the day after a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville ended with the murder of a counterprotester. “The core issue was for us as RNC members to clearly and loudly denounce white supremacists,” explained Palatucci. “There can be no hesitation for the Party of Lincoln.” The resolution itself makes no mention of Trump or the president’s multiple reactions to Charlottesville, which led to three presidential advisory councils being disbanded as their members quit in protest. Instead, it states that “the racist beliefs of Nazis, the KKK, white supremacists and others are completely inconsistent with the Republican Party’s platform,” and urges that “swift and certain justice be meted out to domestic terrorists.” Most of the remaining text focuses on the history of the party, and the need for colorblind policy and politics. “We recall that the Republican Party was founded in the struggle against slavery and a rejection of the racial beliefs underlying the institution of slavery,” the resolution reads. “The Republican Party subsequently led the fight to assure all human beings have equal standing before the law, promoting instead the foundational idea that each person be judged as an individual on merit and not on the color of skin or other circumstance of birth.” The RNC’s resolution nonetheless breaks from the president by condemning white nationalists specifically and not dovetailing into criticism of the left. It’s the latest of several Republican responses that have taken that tone, but have often been buried by coverage of the president. RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel gave the party’s first official response to Charlottesville at an ill-timed August 14 event in Detroit designed to demonstrate the party’s ongoing outreach to black voters. “White supremacy, neo-Nazi, KKK and hate speech and bigotry are not welcome and [do] not have a home in the Republican Party,” McDaniel told reporters, as black Republicans waited for a closed-press roundtable to begin. “This isn’t a partisan issue. This is an American issue.” Over the next 10 days, Republicans in every state fended off questions about the president’s markedly different response to Charlottesville — condemning violence on “many sides,” attacking the “alt-left,” and occasionally being congratulated by white nationalist leaders for his tone. It was agonizing for Republicans who had tried, before Trump, to broaden the party’s appeal to non-white voters. Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.), the highest profile black Republican in Congress, told Vice News that Trump’s “moral authority” had been compromised by his Charlottesville response. Michael Steele, who as the first black RNC chairman had apologized for the GOP’s racial politics, said after Charlottesville that his party was making a grave error by defending Trump. “In 2009, I declared the Southern Strategy of the GOP was dead. It was over,” Steele said on an August 15 episode of his Sirius XM radio show. “I am sad to say that in the course of the 2016 campaign, that strategy was revived. And now this seminal moment faces this party, where you’re either going to kill this bastard right off the top, just get rid of the Southern Strategy or you’re going to own it in perpetuity.” Outside of the Opryland complex, other Republicans were engaged in an argument about what else the party needed to do. On Tuesday, Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) told reporters that a bust of Nathan Bedford Forrest, the founder of the Ku Klux Klan, should be removed from the state capitol complex. But the leading Republican candidates for governor, including Rep. Diane Black (R-Tenn.), stopped short of that, suggesting that the issue needed further debate in the Republican-controlled state legislature. And further away, the leadership of the Democratic National Committee accused Republicans of distracting from a crisis that they’d enabled long before Trump’s victory. “The Republican Party, led by President Trump, has cultivated a culture of hate through their rhetoric and policies,” said DNC spokeswoman Xochitl Hinojosa. “A vote on a resolution doesn’t fix the systemic problems within the Republican party. When will they take responsibility, denounce racism and stop pursuing divisive policies like voter identification laws and extreme immigration reforms?” Republican officials, who entered the Nashville meeting celebrating a historic level of control in Washington and states, said that their resolution would at least clear up where they stood and where the president needed to arrive. “I think the vote on the resolution will be unanimous and I support it,” said Steve Duprey, an RNC committeeman from New Hampshire. “I do think it is useful to remind America that our party condemns all of these hate groups, and that while the President may have not articulated it as well as he could have initially, he too has been forceful in condemning racists, supremacists, the alt right, Nazis, and other hate groups.”)
