(FROM THE ARTICLE: Commissioner Tim Elliott, R-Glen Ellyn, said the downside is people have to lose money at the machines in order for the county to receive any money in video gambling taxes. “The revenue we would receive as a county is a fraction of what our residents would lose,” Elliot said, estimating gamers would have to lose a total of $5.5 million for the county to take in $276,000. “That’s not economic development. That is the opposite of economic development.” . . . Board member Pete DiCianni, R-Elmhurst, requested the vote be tabled so that people would have a chance to weigh in, but other commissioners countered that the item was on the agenda and the public had notice of the meeting. DiCianni, who also suggested letting voters decide if the ban should be lifted, said allowing video gambling in unincorporated areas would put more pressure on municipalities that have banned it.)

And while lifting the ban will generate revenue for the county, he said, “not all revenue is good revenue.” “I don’t think it’s right for DuPage County,” he said. Elliott said he’s concerned that lifting the ban will create problems for businesses in municipalities that prohibit video gambling. “The two largest municipalities in my district — Wheaton and Glen Ellyn — have banned video gaming,” Elliott said. “What are you going to do to them when you allow video gaming in every unincorporated area that borders them?”)

https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2019/11/05/new-york-times-citrus-county-florida-library-subscription-rejected-fake-news/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The librarians of Citrus County, Fla., had what seemed like a modest wish: A digital subscription to the New York Times. For about $2,700 annually, they reasoned, they could offer their roughly 70,000 patrons an easy way to research and catch up on the news. But when their request came before the Citrus County commission last month, local officials literally laughed out loud. One commissioner, Scott Carnahan, declared the paper to be “fake news.” “I agree with President Trump,” he said. “I will not be voting for this. I don’t want the New York Times in this county.” In a move that is generating intense online backlash, all five members of the commission agreed to reject the library’s request. The discussion took place Oct. 24, the same day the Trump administration announced plans to cancel federal agencies’ subscriptions to the Times and The Washington Post. While there’s no apparent connection — the Citrus County meeting began several hours before the Wall Street Journal broke the news of the new edict — the controversy unfolding in central Florida highlights how politicians nationwide are parroting the president’s disparaging rhetoric about the media.)

https://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/post-tribune/opinion/ct-ptb-davich-saving-for-retirement-while-young-st-1030-20191029-ljhsqft2drg2veqxg2zxbmmpmy-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: One hundred dollars a month. This was how much money my financial adviser told me to save, back when I was in my 20s and 30s. “Damn it, Jerry, if you do this you’ll have a retirement nest egg waiting for you 30 years from now,” George Wilson told me sternly. He was one of my father’s poker buddies who once sold me a life insurance policy. He was intimidating and outspoken. He also was 100% right. Wilson tried slipping me a proverbial ace in the hole for my losing hand of cards in life. I was too stupid and shortsighted to accept it. After a few years of scraping together $100 each month to pay into this seemingly mythical retirement fund, I stopped contributing. I eventually cashed it in to pay off some credit card bills, telling myself that I couldn’t afford it any longer. It was the cheapest rationalization I could afford back then. At that point in my life, I was earning a meager income in a family food business, I had two young children, and I was already thinking of cashing in my marriage. Putting away $100 a month, every month for 30-plus years, seemed impossible. My wiser self in the future has never forgiven my stupid self from the past. In my younger days, I likely spent $100 a month on “must have” purchases – my Coca-Cola addiction, drive-through junk food, weekend entertainment in Chicago, a massive collection of music cassettes and CDs, you name it. These unnecessary expenditures, in hindsight, have only compounded my anger toward myself. I try to keep this in mind when I now hear about millennials who believe retirement savings is a myth or a rumor they’ve been told by gray-haired geezers like me. What do we know, right? In my 20s, I thought the same thing about “old man Wilson,” who was only in his 40s at the time. He seemed to be in his 70s or 80s. (He’s still around. Please don’t tell him.) Youth has a way of distorting our perception of life. We had more answers than questions. We had more time than money. We had more reasons to not think about getting older, getting unhealthy, or getting prepared for retirement. It all seemed so… impossible, or at least improbable. As if it would never happen.)

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
— Chicago teachers can save 244 unused sick days, retire early under new contract The tentative agreement raises the cap on accrued sick days from 40 to 244; some longtime teachers could use those days to retire a year early and still collect their full pension. – Matthew Hendrickson (DIERSEN: Almost all of my Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates in the federal government took many more sick days than I did. Starting in 1966, when I was 18 years old, they made it very clear that they did NOT want me to take any sick days. They hinted/implied/argued/shouted that I should NOT get that benefit for many reasons including I avoided the draft, had good health, was non-poor, had more education, professional certifications and/or licenses than they did, was Republican, was conservative, was Protestant (baptized, raised, and confirmed as a Missouri Synod Lutheran), was 100% German American, my wife had a good job, we gave up trying to have children, we did not adopt, we did not become foster parents, and/or my ancestors have been in America since 1844. Nevertheless, they are furious that my Civil Service Retirement System pension is higher because of my many used sick days.)
