(FROM THE ARTICLE: Technology Committee Chairman Kevin Wiley and Committee Vice-Chairwoman Janice Anderson released a statement Wednesday saying, “On behalf of our fellow board members and the Technology Committee, we would like to express our concern about the performance of the DuPage Election Commission Tuesday evening. After conferring with DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin, we request the Executive Director of the Election Commission appear before the full County Board at our next meeting, March 27, to present information about the effort to tabulate and report election results.”)

NBC5
— Ives Won’t Make Nice After Ugly Primary Battle, Refuses to Speak With Rauner “Why would she talk to him after the disrespect he showed last night?” a spokeswoman for Ives’ campaign asked in a Wednesday statement – Shelby Bremer (DIERSEN: Will Rauner offer to sign a contract with extremely stiff penalty clauses in which a) he would agree that political parties exist to help elect candidates who can and will defend and advance their platform and b) he would agree to defend and advance all the planks in the Illinois Republican Party platform? It could be called “A contract with Illinois Republicans.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The race was ugly from the start and didn’t end much better, as the two candidates did not speak on election night nor the following day. A spokeswoman for Ives’ campaign confirmed Wednesday afternoon that she and Rauner had still not been in contact – and had no plans to speak in the future. “Why would she talk to him after the disrespect he showed last night announcing victory before all of the counties were in – without a call to the campaign, after he poured millions of dollars into an attack campaign that flat-out lied about her, and after he dispatched his slimy operatives to the media last night to disparage Ives, her campaign and all of her conservative supporters?” Ives’ spokeswoman Kathleen Murphy said in a statement. “She has no reason to believe or trust anything he says,” Murphy continued. Rauner emerged to deliver an election night victory speech on Tuesday before the race had been officially called in his favor. “I am honored and humbled by this victory,” Rauner said Tuesday night, claiming victory with a slim lead and even as voting machine problems delayed results from DuPage County – Ives’ home territory that she ultimately carried by four points. “You have given me the chance to win the battle against the corruption that plagues Illinois. Thank you,” Rauner continued, adding, “This primary election was hard fought, yes. I want to congratulate my opponent on her principled stand.” “For those of you around the state of Illinois who wanted to send me a message, let me be clear: I have heard you,” he said. Rauner initially dismissed Ives as a “fringe candidate” before pivoting to take her more seriously after she garnered the support of various conservative organizations, and even some of his former backers that sought to take down the first-term governor from the right.)

WLS AM
— Will Ives support Rauner in General Election? – Bill Cameron (DIERSEN: What do you say to those who want Rauner to run against those who voted for Ives, that is, to run as an anti-Republican big time? It seems like Rauner would never agree to defend or advance the traditional family, right to life, immigration, or many other planks in the Illinois Republican Party platform.)
http://www.wlsam.com/2018/03/21/will-ives-support-rauner-in-general-election/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: So, where do Jeanne Ives supporters go in the November election Bill Cameron? On election eve, Jeanne Ives told me she’d support Bruce Rauner if he wins the primary. Ives: “Because obviously elections are always about choices and sometimes you have bad choices and worse choices. Every single Democrat would be a disaster for the State of Illinois. Cameron: “So, even though you think Rauner is bad, the Democrats are worse?” Ives: “Absolutely! They certainly are.” But on the morning after, Ives said she has no plans to pick up the phone and concede to Rauner. She said, “I really don’t care to say anything to the governor at this point, quite frankly.” Sounds like Rauner needs to move further to the right.)
— Rauner pledges to unite Republicans after defeating Ives in Republican primary – John Dempsey (DIERSEN: What do you say to those who want Rauner to run against those who voted for Ives, that is, to run as an anti-Republican big time? It seems like Rauner would never agree to defend or advance the traditional family, right to life, immigration, or many other planks in the Illinois Republican Party platform.)
http://www.wlsam.com/2018/03/21/rauner-pledges-to-unite-republicans-after-defeating-ives-in-republican-primary/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois Republican Governor Bruce Rauner is pledging to unite the fractured Republican party after winning his bitter primary battle with conservative State Representative Jeanne Ives. Rauner beat Ives by less than 20,000 votes, 51 to 48 percent, in a race that she started because of anger over Rauner’s decision to sign a law allowing for taxpayer funded abortions. Wednesday morning, Rauner told “The Big John and Ramblin’ Ray Show” on WLS that he will start a listening tour to get input from Illinois voters. “On the issues that have divided us, I want to find ways to bridge the divide. To come together, to come up with solutions that bridge the divide. We can do this, and we’ll work together in good faith.” Rauner will face Democrat J.B. Pritzker in November, after Pritzker defeated five challengers in the Democratic primary. Pritzker is expected to try and tie Rauner to the policies of Republican President Donald Trump, but Rauner, who has gone to great pains to distance himself from the President, told WLS that strategy won’t work. “People know that I’m my own person”, said Rauner. “I work with the Trump administration to help the people of Illinois just like I work with the Obama administration to help the people of Illinois. I am my own person. I make my own decisions. And all I care about is workin’ for the families of our state.” Pritzker was out early Wednesday morning thanking voters at the 95th Street Red Line stop on the South Side. He told reporters Rauner has had his chance to govern the state, and has failed. “Illinois has an important job in the next eight months and that’s to decide which direction it wants to go”, said Pritzker. “Down the road of the failed policies of Bruce Rauner, or on the road toward recovery and job creation and lowering the cost of health care, and making sure that every child gets a quality education. That’s what this campaign is gonna be all about and we’re gonna make sure people know it.” However Rauner told WLS that Pritzker has connections to what he says is corruption in the state Democratic party. “Pritzker is part of the machine. He’s part of the corruption in Illinois, he’s a tax dodger, a tax cheat, he tried to buy the Senate seat from Blagojevich, the truth is comin’ out on Pritzker and when the truth is known for the people of Illinois, they’ll choose Rauner and Sanguinetti, and they’ll choose reform so we can have a better future.”)

— Tuesday’s vote forecasts bleak November for Rauner – John Kass
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/columnists/kass/ct-met-kass-bleak-rauner-november-20180321-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: It was Rauner who invited a primary challenge by playing social justice warrior of the left, signing a bill that put taxpayers on the hook for paying for abortions, and also signing sanctuary state legislation. Ives took the challenge, and that she came so close so quickly and with little statewide name recognition and nothing like his bankroll is a testament not only to her own message but of Rauner’s low standing among the grass-roots GOP. Democrats know this, and the bosses salivate in anticipation of November. So if Rauner has charted out a way forward to mend the intra-party rifts in the hopes of stopping Pritzker, it hasn’t been articulated. And burning Boss Madigan in rhetorical effigy day after day just won’t cut it. Ives understands the problems are about more than allegiance. “In the state of Illinois, we do not have Republican or Democrat problems,” Ives said in her concession speech. “No, we have a math problem. … “You can’t just spend yourself into oblivion, piling up millions of dollars in debt, while hundreds of thousands of people flee the state of Illinois, and think that things are going to get better the next day,” Ives said. “It’s got to stop.” But it won’t stop, not anytime soon, not with a divided Illinois Republican Party, and not with Pritzker funding the Democrats who are moving farther and farther to the left.)

DAILY HERALD
— Cronin: Changes coming after DuPage Election Commission’s ‘inept’ performance – Robert Sanchez
http://www.dailyherald.com/news/20180321/cronin-changes-coming-after-dupage-election-commissions-inept-performance–
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Cronin said he wants commission officials to attend next week’s county board meeting to answer questions about what happened. “We will make an effort to discover all the facts,” Cronin said, but someone must be held responsible. “I promise you, there’s going to be changes,” he said. “I am done with this.” Cronin said he also will continue pushing for a state law change to merge the election commission with the county clerk’s office. He has supported that concept for years, but the legislature has been reluctant to give the county permission to do it. “I look forward to the day the election commission is under the auspices of the clerk’s office,” Cronin said. “There will be accountability, better responsiveness and better professionalism — I am certain of that.” On Wednesday, election commission officials said the problem with the optical scan voting machines was caused by so-called “ender cards”– similar to paper ballots — that are needed to close the machines and tabulate results. It turns out the ender cards the commission purchased from Liberty Systems couldn’t be run through the machines. “The paper stock used by the vendor for this election was not to specification and didn’t fit through the scanner,” said Joseph Sobecki, the commission’s executive director. “That resulted in none of the locations being able to close the optical scan.” The problem didn’t affect touch-screen voting machines, but most DuPage voters use optical scan paper ballots. Once the problem was discovered, Sobecki said officials decided to bring the optical scan voting machines from every polling place to Wheaton so they could go through the closing procedure. Cronin blasted that decision. “If the cards fail, you should have a system in place to respond to that,” he said. “This notion that you are going to physically transport every one of these machines from all of the polling places and have them wait in line out in the driveways of the county complex … is just stunning to me in its level of incompetence.” Sobecki said the first machines arrived around 8:45 p.m. Meanwhile, Cronin said he was getting calls from numerous campaigns wondering where their votes were. . .The commission said “rigorous” testing was done before the election, but Zay said he doesn’t believe it. “If they tested it, it would have worked,” he said. “The problem is they have their own separate board,” Zay said, referring to the three-person panel that oversees the commission. “Maybe that board needs to go.” The three members of the bipartisan DuPage Board of Election Commissioners are appointed by Cronin. Republicans hold two of the three seats. Cronin acknowledged that election commissioners should bear responsibility. “I think there is a enough blame to go around over there,” he said. “The whole operation needs to be re-examined from top to bottom as we dissolve it.”)

He says the future of the party is at stake if Republicans don’t come together and beat Pritzker in the fall. He’s got about eight months to work on that. According to the numbers, Pritzker’s got a huge advantage, but this is just day one. The GOP chair says the division is common during primary season, but they always bounce back. Wednesday afternoon, Ives’ supporter, conservative Representative Peter Breen jumped ship after months of harsh criticism for the governor. He announced he’s standing behind Rauner once again to fight “the Madigan machine.” He released a statement: “The governor is our party nominee and I support him 100 percent.”)

— Thousands of Republicans voted for an Illinois Nazi Yes, the GOP couldn’t run an opponent for Arthur Jones. But 20,000 people voted for him anyway! – CHARLIE MAY (DIERSEN: Far too many Democrats, Libertarians, Greens, etc. falsely claim to be Republican. I should write a book about those in my precinct, in Wheaton, in Glen Ellyn, in Milton Township, in DuPage County, and in Illinois who falsely claim to be Republican.)

March 21 Morning Edition

GOPUSA ILLINOIS
— Who won the contested races that were on the Republican ballot in your precinct? Rauner/Sanguinetti, Harold, Grant, Mendrick, Eckhoff, and Zaruba won the races that were on the Republican ballot in my precinct.

In DuPage County, Rauner/Sanguinetti got 33,157 (48%) votes and Ives/Morthland got 35,965 (52%) votes; Harold got 35,046 (55%) votes and Grasso got 28,950 (45%) votes; Mendrick got 39,198 (60%) votes and Bibbiano got 25,748 (40%) votes; and the DuPage County Election Commission consolidation question got 76,887 (56%) Yes votes and 59,256 (44%) no votes.

To defeat the Democrats on November 6, 2018, a) I urge all the candidates who won to seek the support of those candidates who lost and b) I urge all those candidates who lost to offer their support for the candidates who won. The winning and losing candidates should stress what they agree on. I urge the Illinois Republican Party and all the Republican county, township, and ward party organizations to schedule unity events ASAP. If I was still the TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois chairman, the organization would be hosting a unity event.

In my DuPage County Milton Township Precinct 9 in Wheaton, 203 (40%) of its 504 registered voters voted. About half of my precinct was in Ives’ precinct before the 2015 gerrymandering. In the contested Republican races, 64 (61%) voted for Ives and 41 (39%) voted for Rauner; 60 (66%) voted for Harold and 31 (34%) voted for Grasso; 74 (77%) voted for Grant, 16 (17%) voted for Minor and 6 (6%) voted for Byrne; 55 (58%) voted for Mendrick and 40 (42%) voted for Bibbiano; 49 (30%) voted for Tatro, 40 (25%) voted for Eckhoff, 32 (20%) voted for Zaruba, 24 (15%) voted for Chinchilla, 14 (9%) voted for McGowen, and 4 (2%) voted for Almiron. 77 voted for me.

Sooner or later, if not already, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes will hint/imply/argue/shout at the aforesaid candidates that they got far fewer votes in my precinct, in Wheaton, in Glen Ellyn, in Milton Township, in DuPage County, and in Illinois BECAUSE OF ME AND BECAUSE OF MY GOPUSA ILLINOIS EMAILS. – Dave Diersen

http://www.mysuburbanlife.com/2018/03/20/state-rep-jeanne-ives-concedes-to-rauner-in-republican-gubernatorial-primary/a1ehb6j/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Even though state Rep. Jeanne Ives, R-Wheaton, fell short in her bid to topple Gov. Bruce Rauner in the Republican primary, she told her supporters they had plenty of reasons to be proud. “It is still one of the most historic nights ever in the state of Illinois,” Ives said, in addressing her supporters gathered March 20 at Abbington Distinctive Banquets in Glen Ellyn. “You know and I know that Bruce Rauner had to be challenged in this election… A popular revolt against the political ruling class fell just a bit short.” “What you should know was that this campaign was started on faith,” Ives said. “We had no money. We had no team. We had a lot of grassroots supporters who knew that we needed to stand up once and for all against people that did not adhere to our policies and our party’s platform. And that’s what we did. We stood up tonight. We stood up every day for the last four and a half months, and we finished this campaign strong. We proved that the grassroots cannot be taken advantage of.” Ives sparked controversy with a campaign ad against Rauner addressing issues such as gender identity, abortion and immigration. However, she defended the ad. “What the commercial that is generating the expected hysteria from the expected quarters attempted to do – admittedly, provocatively – was to properly and truthfully characterize the extreme issue positions Rauner took and their implications,” Ives previously said in a speech at a City Club of Chicago luncheon. “The commercial does not attack people. It tackles issues by truthfully illustrating the constituencies Rauner has chosen to serve to the exclusion of others.”)

My critics/opponents have lots of religious, government, political, and/or financial clout in Wheaton, in Glen Ellyn, in Milton Township, in DuPage County, and in Illinois, but nevertheless, they blame me for their problems, blame me for your problems, blame me for my problems, and blame for everyone’s problems.)
https://www.federaltimes.com/federal-oversight/congress/2018/03/20/house-passes-reinstatement-of-rule-that-could-cut-federal-employee-pay/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The House of Representatives in a contentious March 20, 2018, vote passed the continuation of an old procedural rule that would give Congress the ability to cut the pay of individual federal workers and to eliminate entire agency programs. The Holman Rule, first passed in 1876 and named for Indiana Rep. William Holman, was removed from the House rule book in 1983. The rule was then reinstated in the Rules of the House for the 115th Congress, but applied only to the first session or year. House Republicans extended the Holman Rule through the end of the current Congress by adding it to H.Res. 787, which provides for the consideration of two unrelated bills. “Last night, without any public debate, House Republicans snuck into legislation the Holman Rule — a cynical and dangerous attack on federal workers that allows members of Congress to reduce the salaries of federal employees. This archaic tool, also known as the Armageddon Rule, is nothing more than a backdoor way for Republicans to dismantle the federal workforce and carry out political vendettas at the expense of career civil servants,” said Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va.)

— Hultgren fires aide Nick Provenzano after sexual encounter with teenage boy – NATASHA KORECKI and JOHN BRESNAHAN
https://www.politico.com/story/2018/03/19/hultgren-aide-fired-471883
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois GOP Rep. Randy Hultgren has fired a top aide after the staffer was found in a car last fall with a 17-year-old boy and no shirt on, according to multiple sources and a police report. Nick Provenzano, 56, was dismissed by Hultgren over the weekend, the sources said. Hultgren’s office declined to comment on the details of Provenzano’s firing. “Nick Provenzano is no longer with the office,” said a Hultgren spokesperson. The Hultgren spokesperson said the office only find out about the incident “late Wednesday and immediately placed him on leave before his eventual termination.” But through a Freedom of Information Act request, POLITICO obtained an Oct. 21, 2017, incident report from the city of McHenry Police Department in Illinois. That report shows police investigated Provenzano for public indecency and other potential criminal acts following the episode, but no charges were ever filed. The name of the teenager is redacted in the report. The report states that a homeowner became suspicious when she saw two men sitting in an SUV on a dead-end street with the lights off and called the police. After a police officer arrived, he approached the car and saw that Provenzano had no shirt on, although the other passenger was fully clothed. When Provenzano was questioned by the police about why he had removed his shirt, he said it was “hot.” Provenzano told the officer the two were “hanging out” and “talking about life.” Provenzano later told the officer that he “did not want to admit to anything, but stated that contact between him and [the teenager] was consensual in nature, that nobody was forced or coerced each other to engage in any acts they did not want to, and that he believed [the teenager] was eighteen (18) years old.” The teenager later told police he had met Provenzano on the gay dating site Grindr. The teenager said he was only 17, but the website changed his age to 18. The teenager said police interrupted them during the middle of their sexual encounter, according to the partially redacted report. Provenzano had removed most of his clothes at one point, the report states. After questioning by police, Provenzano was released without charges. He later hired a lawyer to respond to police inquiries, but Provenzano refused to be interviewed again. State prosecutors decided no criminal case would be filed against him. Provenzano was hired as Hultgren’s deputy district director in August 2016. Provenzano had earlier served as Hultgren’s field director during the 2012 and 2014 campaigns. Provenzano is a graduate of DeVry University with “training in electronics, computer technology and business management,” according to his candidate bio. He was paid more than $80,000 as Hultgren’s deputy district director last year, according to House disbursement records. He also earned another $28,000-plus from Hultgren’s reelection committee during 2017, according to records on file with the Federal Election Commission. Provenzano served as a McHenry County board member for 13 years. He was also the campaign manager for former Rep. Joe Walsh (R-Ill.) in 2010, according to his LinkedIn biography. Hultgren was first elected to the House in 2010. He was once an aide to former Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.), who went to federal prison over secret payments to a man he allegedly sexually abused as a teenager. Hultgren, a lawyer, served in the Illinois Legislature for a dozen years before he was elected to Congress.)

DUPAGE POLICY JOURNAL
— Diana Rauner: We’re moving to Italy if Bruce loses
https://dupagepolicyjournal.com/stories/511364971-diana-rauner-we-re-moving-to-italy-if-bruce-loses
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Gov. Bruce Rauner says he’ll fight for Illinoisans. But only if he wins re-election. If he loses, Rauner’s wife, Diana, says she and Bruce are out of here. “Bruce and I are moving to Italy,” a source says she flippantly told a group of “mostly Democrat” women from DuPage County last Thursday. The occasion was an event at the home of Naperville Mayor Steve Chirico and his wife, Julie Cole Chirico, chief fundraiser for embattled, but Rauner-financed House GOP Leader Jim Durkin (R-Western Springs). Diana Rauner’s Italy remark was a response to a question she received about Illinois’ stunning rate of outmigration. An attendee noted that several of her neighbors had left the state, asking Diana Rauner what her husband planned to do to encourage people to stay. “She made a vague comment about stopping Madigan and then said that, if Bruce lost and they couldn’t stop Madigan, they were moving to Italy,” the source told DuPage Policy Journal. “It was awkward.” In addition to employing his wife, Durkin and his campaign chief, David Walsh, are a longtime backers of Mayor Chirico, a moderate Republican who supports Rauner but actively opposed President Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election. The Rauners have traveled to Italy on official business during his administration. In Nov. 2016, Gov. Rauner and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel traveled to Rome along with State Sen. John Cullerton (D-Chicago) Chicago Ald. Ed Burke (D-14th), former social secretary to President Barack Obama, Desiree Rogers and U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) to see then-Chicago Archbishop Blase Cupich be elevated to cardinal. At a co-press conference with Emanuel in Vatican City, Rauner said “this time reminds us that the good lord did not make us Republicans or Democrats.” Seven months later, Rauner would break his promise to Cardinal Cupich that he would not sign a bill that would force Illinois taxpayers to pay for abortions.)

https://www.nbcchicago.com/blogs/ward-room/Candidates-in-Final-Push-Ahead-of-Illinois-Primary-477248143.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Rauner spent his Sunday campaigning downstate. Meantime his challenger, state senator Jeanne Ives, criticized the $75-million dollar Rauner campaign. “He thinks he can use his money to spread lies about me,” she said, “to put him back into office and that’s pathetic.”)

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
— Trump a power player in Illinois 2018 primary – Lynn Sweet
https://chicago.suntimes.com/columnists/trump-a-power-player-in-illinois-2018-primary/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: President Donald Trump is a big player in Tuesday’s Illinois primary with Trump-fueled voting expected to boost 2018 turnout compared to 2010 and 2012, the most recent nonpresidential years. Who does that help the most? On the GOP side, it’s pro-Trump governor candidate Jeanne Ives, taking on Gov. Bruce Rauner, who has been running from Trump. As for Democrats, the Trump factor benefits most the contenders who are able to seize the support of angry, newly energized voters. In the bigger primary races, that would include governor hopeful state Sen. Daniel Biss; House contender Marie Newman and Cook County Assessor challenger Fritz Kaegi. Here’s what I’ve learned about the Illinois Trump factors based on interviews with strategists, and my analysis of TV ads, direct mail and other political communications: Democrats furious over Trump’s 2016 victory, who usually don’t vote in nonpresidential years, are in this time. Those voters — younger, people of color and women — are likely more progressive, strategists tell me. Far fewer Republicans vote in Illinois primaries, so a candidate with a committed, animated base — that would be Ives — has an advantage. Rauner is wobbly on Trump. He’s loath to associate with Trump for fear of alienating Democratic and crossover GOP voters he will need in November. That is, should he be renominated since pro-Trump Ives, a state representative from Wheaton, has mustered a strong challenge from the right. The Democratic Governor’s Association is trying to throw the primary to Ives because she will be easier to beat in November. The DGA is running an ad praising her for being in “lockstep” with Trump — a pitch, wicked as it is from Democrats, to appeal to Trump primary voters turned off by Rauner.)

The more that you do to defend and advance the traditional family, right to life, immigration, Second Amendment, and the rest of the planks in the Illinois Republican Party platform and the more that you do to help elect candidates who can and will defend and advance the aforesaid planks, the more likely that Democrats and Democrat plants, Libertarians and Libertarian plants, Greens and Green plants, and RINOs will succeed in getting someone to run against you.)

— Men, ask a woman to mentor you – Melissa Lamson (DIERSEN: I did that in early 1990. In my opinion, GAO failed/refused to promote into its Senior Executive Service a GS-15 Jewish woman a) who was my immediate supervisor during my last 4 years at GAO and b) who supervised my immediate supervisor the previous 4 years because she failed/refused to do more to waste my career and to get rid of me. Most, if not virtually all of my GAO superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates DID NOT want to work for her, work with her, or supervise her because she was female, younger, Jewish, very intelligent, very demanding, and wealthy. She had an MBA from the University of Chicago and had passed the CPA examination on her first attempt. To turn her against me, my Democrat GAO superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates stressed to her a) that I was conservative (she was liberal), b) that I was Republican (she was Democrat), c) that I was 100% German national origin (she was 100% Russian national origin), d) that I was baptized, raised, and confirmed as a Missouri Synod Lutheran (she was Jewish), and e) that my ancestors had been in America since the 1840s (her ancestors were recent immigrants.)

CRAIN’S CHICAGO BUSINESS
— How changed are Chicago-area Democrats? – GREG HINZ (DIERSEN: From what I see having lived in the Chicago-area since 1948, Democrats here are ever-increasingly anti-Trump supporters, anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-patriotic, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, anti-German Americans, anti-draft avoiders, and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time. https://www.politico.com/story/2018/03/19/republican-megadonor-uihlein-470268
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Democrats and many Republicans in Illinois were horrified by the ad: a 60-second spot released by Gov. Bruce Rauner’s GOP primary challenger, Jeanne Ives, featuring a parade of politically incorrect takes on thorny cultural issues. A deep-voiced man portraying a transgender woman tells Rauner, “Thank you for signing legislation that lets me use the girls bathroom.” Then a young woman thanks Rauner for “making all Illinois families pay for my abortions.” But equally shocking to the content was the person who had made the ad possible: Richard Uihlein, a little-known Republican donor who had until recently been one of Rauner’s biggest supporters. After a fallout out with the governor over abortion policy, Uihlien gave $2.5 million to Ives in a single week this past January — essentially bankrolling her campaign to defeat Rauner in a Republican primary on Tuesday.)

http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2018/03/trump-made-white-house-staff-sign-ndas-to-stop-leaks-report.html

(FROM THE ARTICLE: It’s well-known that nearly everyone in Donald Trump’s orbit has to sign a nondisclosure agreement, from business associates, to campaign employees, to women he may or may not have had an affair with. Therefore it is simultaneously galling and non-at-all surprising that Trump may have pressured senior White House staffers into signing NDAs, though they are members of the federal government, not his personal employees. Trump actually told the Washington Post in April 2016 that he intended to use NDAs in the White House, saying “when people are chosen by a man to go into government at high levels and then they leave government and they write a book about a man and say a lot of things that were really guarded and personal, I don’t like that.” He allowed that “there could be some kind of a law that you can’t do this,” and experts say he was on to something: ACLU: Public employees can’t be gagged by private agreements. These so-called NDAs are unconstitutional and unenforceable.)

https://www.politico.com/story/2018/03/18/durbin-hillary-clinton-trump-voters-469912
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Hillary Clinton’s remarks earlier this month characterizing voters who cast ballots for President Donald Trump as xenophobic and misogynistic are “not helpful at all,” Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin said Sunday, insisting that the Democratic Party is moving beyond Clinton as it approaches the midterm elections. Speaking at a conference in India, Clinton said her success in the 2016 election came in parts of the U.S. that are economically strong, “optimistic, diverse, dynamic, moving-forward” while Trump won more downtrodden regions. “His whole campaign, ‘Make America Great Again,’ was looking backward,” she said. “You know, you didn’t like black people getting rights, you don’t like women getting jobs, you don’t want to see that Indian-American succeeding more than you are, whatever your problem is, I’m going to solve it.” The remarks prompted a quick rebuke from Republicans and especially the Trump administration, which used Clinton’s characterization to cast her once again as out of touch with the majority of the country. Durbin (D-Ill.), too, said Clinton was off base with her comments because a significant number of Trump’s supporters had previously voted for President Barack Obama. “My friend Hillary Clinton is wrong. Thirty percent of the people that voted for Donald Trump had voted for President Obama. Why?” Durbin told “Fox News Sunday.“ “The same people who looked for change with President Obama thought there wasn’t enough, as far as their personal lives were concerned, and they supported Donald Trump. That is a reality the Democrats acknowledge.” The Illinois senator said that while Clinton will continue to generate headlines, Democrats have turned the page from her surprise 2016 loss as they move toward efforts to unseat the president in 2020. “Hillary Clinton, like every American, has the right to express her point of view and she obviously gets press coverage,” he said. “But we are moving onto the next chapter in American history. We have new Democratic leadership, and more people aspiring to be candidates in 2020. It’ll be a different cast of characters completely.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: She has variously blamed former FBI Director James Comey, Russia, sexists, “deplorables” and, in a speech in Mumbai, racism. In one of her worst-yet panders — quite a distinction if you remember Hillary’s 2007 speech in Selma, Alabama — she apparently noticed the darker pigmentation of her Indian audience and adapted. She started out by reiterating her disdain for those who failed to recognize her virtues, saying that she won in places “that are optimistic, diverse, dynamic, moving forward,” compared with Trump voters who are always looking “backward.” Then, mockingly, talking to “those people” who voted for him, she continued, “You know you didn’t like black people getting rights, you don’t like women, you know, getting jobs, you don’t want to, you know, see Indian-Americans succeeding more than you are.”)

SPRINGFIELD STATE JOURNAL REGISTER
— My predictions for Tuesday’s primary election – Bernard Schoenburg
http://www.sj-r.com/opinion/20180317/bernard-schoenburg-my-predictions-for-tuesdays-primary-election
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A year ago, it would have been hard to imagine a serious Republican challenge to first-term Gov. BRUCE RAUNER. But state Rep. JEANNE IVES of Wheaton is waging just that type of fight. A key reason Ives got into the race is that Rauner signed a bill he said he would veto — which in part expands taxpayer-paid abortions to Medicaid recipients. Rauner has said Ives is too far to the right to get elected in Illinois. Ives says Rauner lied about the abortion bill and is lying about her in ads that accuse her of being linked to House Speaker MICHAEL MADIGAN, D-Chicago. She also says Rauner doesn’t deserve another term after his first one. Ives got a lot of attention by running an ad, roundly criticized, that showed actors (including a man in a dress) seen by critics as stereotypical negative views of groups including transgender people. Some newspapers have cited that ad as divisive and the reason they can’t endorse Ives. It did get attention, but also gave people pause. I think Rauner gets the nomination — but Ives could well be close. And if she even overcomes him, it won’t be a shock. . .On the GOP side, Rauner backs Urbana attorney ERIKA HAROLD, and she beats DuPage County Board member GARY GRASSO.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: President Trump has gotten flack for not filling a significant number of political appointee positions in his first year. His answer to that is “You don’t need them.” He has cut positions across departments by eliminating people who probably don’t like the guy anyway. In his first six months, the federal employee count went down 10,700. It is not just what he cut, but likewise what he has not added. In their first six months, President Bush (the younger) added 36,000 and President Obama added 60,000. While 10,700 may be a small dent in the total number of federal workers (2.8 million), it is still headed in the right direction.)

If I had been a Democrat, a minority, a female, or a veteran, GAO would not have forced me to “start at the bottom” and suffer a $19,203/year pay cut in today’s dollars. To justify forcing me to “start at the bottom,” GAO dismissed the fact a) that GAO audits IRS, b) that much of what IRS Revenue Officers do is similar to what GAO Analysts do, c) that I had almost 9 years of experience working for IRS, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $81,071-$91,880, d) that I had earned an MBA from Loyola in 1976, e) that I had almost completed the requirements for a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul, and f) that I had passed the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: We also need to attract new Foreign Service officers. Hiring declined by more than a third from 2016 to 2017, and the number of young people seeking to take the Foreign Service exam has dropped significantly from the rates seen during the previous two administrations. Attracting the right personnel will require Mr. Pompeo to work with Congress and take other steps to change obsolete rules that, for instance, discourage former State Department employees from returning, and require even experienced people to start at the bottom if they have not previously worked in government — denying our diplomatic corps the ability to draw on specialized expertise.)

http://www.dailyherald.com/news/20180317/the-donors-behind-the-dollars-in-governor-races-will-war-chests-matter
(FROM THE ARTICLE: But after President Donald Trump upset expectations in 2016, all bets should be off in Tuesday’s election, especially with potential low turnout and undecided voters creating flux, suburban experts said. “If the real hard core turns out, Rauner is in trouble,” veteran Republican organizer Pat Durante of Addison said. “If the moderates turn out, Ives is in trouble. If you asked me to pick who’ll win today … I couldn’t.” . . . On the Republican side, Rauner reported a formidable $55.6 million cash in hand at the end of 2017. In 2016, the governor donated $57 million to his campaign, and over the course of his political career, he’s given himself $95 million, state records show. That’s a stark contrast to Ives, who banked $404,000 cash in hand in the last quarter of 2017. But she surged in 2018, raising more than $3.3 million, mainly because of a $2.5 million windfall from Dick Uihlein of Lake Forest, founder of Uline shipping supplies and a one-time Rauner donor. “I never expected Ives to spend the kind of money she’s spending,” Durante said. Other significant Ives contributors include Chicagoan Vincent Kolber, president of rail equipment firm Residco and a former Rauner donor, with over $500,000; Hinsdale IT entrepreneur William Merchantz with $75,000; and the Illinois Opportunity Project, whose co-founders include conservative talk show host Dan Proft. Rauner has garnered more than $440,000 in 2018. His biggest donors include previous supporter and Chicago executive William Kunkler of C.C. Industries with $100,000 and the Illinois Republican Party with $191,000. Rauner has donated about $200,000 to the state GOP since 2010. Durante wouldn’t predict who’ll win, but he senses an enthusiasm gap. “I would think the hard-core base will go for Jeanne,” he said. “I think Rauner needs to get to those moderate Republicans. … It might be tougher for him than he imagines.” . . . For starters, Rauner wasn’t supposed to have an opponent, but the state’s entrenched financial crisis and political gridlock provoked rumblings of unrest from the rank and file. Despite the government dysfunction, the Winnetka investment banker is endorsed by mainstream Cook and DuPage Republicans. Ives, of Wheaton, has picked up a slew of local endorsements such as the Wheatland Township Republican Organization, Republican Organization of Wheeling Township and Batavia Township Republican Organization. She launched her bid after Rauner supported Medicaid funding for abortions. The conservative West Point grad has used social issues to whip up support among the GOP base, although the strategy has backfired with moderates. Last week, Ives launched an ad blitz calling Rauner a “fake” Republican, while he’s retaliated with commercials linking her with beleaguered Speaker Michael Madigan, a Democrat.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: There are a number of issues that the state is facing in regard to retaining teachers and substitute teachers in school districts, such as reducing $250 to $300 it costs for a substitute license, reduce the requirements for out-of-state teachers, and increasing the rate of pay for subs. “The biggest thing is the rate of pay for substitute teachers,” said IARSS Association President Mark Jontry. “With the exacerbated shift in the economy, there is a reduced number of applicants because we have a stronger economy. People are now looking for job opportunities outside the state.” To compete with other counties of the state, Klosterman’s district had to increase the pay of its substitute teachers to $90 a day. “It was necessary to be competitive and expand the candidate pool for us to make sure that we did everything we could to fill positions as much as possible,” he said. Other methods Klosterman’s district implemented were using social media to advertise and speaking with employees, parents, friends, relatives, etc., asking if they know anyone who would like to be a substitute.)

Trump factor looms large in Illinois governor primary campaigns – Rick Pearson (DIERSEN: Rauner paints himself as being anti-Trump. What will the anti-Trump voters in your precinct, in your municipality, in your township, in your county, and in Illinois do? Or will they cast a Democrat primary ballot and vote for those candidates who are the most anti-Trump? http://illinoisreview.typepad.com/illinoisreview/2018/03/thru-il-gop-rauner-gifts-41-county-gop-orgs-5k-and-more-leading-to-primary.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In an political strategy unprecedented in the Illinois Republican Party, thousands of dollars were transferred from the Illinois Republican Party to county organizations in the last three months leading up to the March 20th IL GOP primary. State Board of Elections records show that 41 county GOP organizations received gifts from the IL GOP from $5000 to $25,000. Never before has the IL GOP had the resources to distribute funds in such a manner. Where did the unprecedented party funding come from? County leaders tell Illinois Review they were asked to fill out applications, and checks were sent their ways – no requests or expectations voiced in the process. The Illinois Republican Party has been consistently sending out press releases over the past few months promoting Governor Rauner, however. Leading up to the check distribution, only five major donations were made to the IL GOP, including nearly $5 million from Citizens for Rauner, which the Rauners fund personally. Three million of the IL GOP funding went to the House Republican Organization.)

— Let’s get rid of all the political consultants – Jim Nowlan (DIERSEN: I have been a member of the American Association of Political Consultants (AAPC) (https://theaapc.org/) since 2001. There are extremely few Republican AAPC members in Illinois. I am one of them. I should write a book about those in Illinois who claim to be Republican political consultants, who are not AAPC members, who reject AAPC’s Code of Ethics, who viciously demonize, denigrate, and condemn me, and who bring disgrace at all political consultants.)
http://www.daily-journal.com/opinion/columnists/local/jim-nowlan-let-s-get-rid-of-all-the-political/article_b4313f71-0ce4-5fe9-b42e-e753909887c2.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Recently, on the same day, I received five over-size, glossy political postcards from Gov. Bruce Rauner. The cards told the most outrageous, bald-faced lies about an opponent that I have ever read. As I digested the messages, I became sick to my stomach. Rauner is being challenged by state Rep. Jeanne Ives for the GOP nomination for governor, at the March 20 Republican primary election. I do not favor either candidate. Ives is too conservative for me, and Rauner is, well, a bald-faced liar. And, apparently, not embarrassed or shamed a whit about his lying to the voters. The messages say that Ives, among other dastardly deeds: Is the lackey of Democratic Speaker of the Illinois House Mike Madigan Wants to keep the recent increase in the income tax and Opposes cutting property taxes Thee anti-Ives statements are “supported” by citations of roll call votes and quotations found in newspapers. Shamefully, the above claims by Rauner represent lying by the ploy of excerpting snippets from larger statements to reverse the meaning. For example, in Henry IV, Shakespeare has Dick the Butcher declare: ”The first thing we do, let’s kill all the lawyers.” Sounds like an attack on lawyers. Yet, in the full context, Butcher thought if he disturbed law and order, he could become king. Thus, Shakespeare meant the famous line as a compliment to attorneys and judges who instill justice in society. That is what Rauner and his consultants have done. Reverse the meaning. Red becomes green; night, day. Indeed, Ives is as anti-Madigan, anti-tax (of any kind) as they come. Respected publications, such as Crain’s Chicago Business, columnist Scott Reeder and others, already have called out Rauner for his lying. We also must note Democrat Madigan, Rauner’s nemesis, has been using misleading attack ads against GOP opponents for years. I still stifle a rueful chuckle when I recall an ad in which Madigan minions charged a GOP opponent for consorting with sex perverts. This was so because the Republican rented an apartment to someone who had years earlier been convicted of some sex crime. Political campaigning has been rough and tumble since the early days of the Republic, when Federalists passed the Alien and Sedition Act. The law allowed President John Adams to jail to newspaper editors and others who criticized him, which he did with gusto. Today, billionaires flaunt limitless campaign spending as they assault untutored voters with lies and misleading half-truths that are laughable to insiders. Why do they do this? Because it works. In my day, half a century ago, candidates generally stuck to making positive statements about themselves, leaving their opponents alone. Not today, obviously. I blame the political consultants. They are paid to win, period. Not to win fairly, honestly, nor with substantive arguments. But simply to win. Win-at-any-cost consultants disgust me. They lurk in the background of campaigns, holding in contempt the voters they deceive. Consultants have found that voters — their cynicism probably ingrained by endless attack ads courtesy of those same consultants — tend to believe the worst about candidates today. Of course, candidates don’t have to accept the advice from consultants that they mislead the public about their opponents. Yet, too many candidates want to win so badly they accept the “wisdom” of their consultants, and thus often spend most of their money on the attack. Legitimate criticism of an opponent is fair game, of course, and helpful to voters. But outright lying? Come on. If we — you and I — don’t call out bald-faced lying, things will only get worse, if such is possible. At the national level, PolitiFact uses volunteers and donations to call out misrepresentation and lies. I propose at the state and local level in Illinois we create a simple Code of Ethics for Political Campaigns: “I will neither lie nor mislead voters about my opponents.” Then we ask all candidates to sign the pledge. Those who fail to sign the pledge, or break it, would be publicly rebuked. Those who sign and keep to the pledge would be publicly commended. The ideal group to implement a Code of Ethics would be the nonprofit Illinois Campaign for Political Reform. But they would need lots of volunteer help. Pollyannaish? Sure, but we could use some Jimmy Stewart (Mr. Smith Goes to Washington) politics in our democracy. So, to be charitable, let’s not kill all the political consultants, appealing as the thought might be. Instead, let’s call out those consultants and candidates who lie and mislead.)

My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes stress that I am no longer a TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois chairman, Wheaton Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee member, Milton Township Republican Central Committee webmaster, Illinois Center Right Coalition Steering Committee member, American Association of Political Consultants Midwest Chapter board member, GAO employee, etc. They stress those activists, candidates, elected officials, party leaders, major donors, political consultants, etc. in Wheaton, in Glen Ellyn, in Milton Township, in DuPage County, and in Illinois a) who state that they are conservative and/or Republican, b) who could/should have come to my defense, but c) did not come to my defense.)

WASHINGTON POST
— Andrew McCabe, Trump’s foil at the FBI, is fired hours before he could retire – Matt Zapotosky (DIERSEN: According to this article, “The move will likely cost McCabe a significant portion of his retirement benefits, though it is possible he could bring a legal challenge.” My Democrat GAO superiors’ success in forcing me to take their early retirement “offer” in 1997 when I was 49 years old a) has cost me a tremendous amount of money and b) resulted in my attorney Walter T. Charlton filing Diersen v. GAO in 1998. SEE: https://gopillinois.com/documents/ So far, at a minimum, in today’s dollars, my Democrat GAO superiors have cost me $1,505,950 ($2,569,162 lost salary minus $1,063,212 pension payments).)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Attorney General Jeff Sessions late Friday night fired former FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe, a little more than 24 hours before McCabe was set to retire — a move that McCabe alleged was an attempt to slander him and undermine the ongoing special counsel investigation into the Trump campaign. Sessions announced the decision in a statement just before 10 p.m., noting that both the Justice Department inspector general and the FBI office that handles discipline had found “that Mr. McCabe had made an unauthorized disclosure to the news media and lacked candor — including under oath — on multiple occasions.” He said based on those findings and the recommendation of the department’s senior career official, “I have terminated the employment of Andrew McCabe effective immediately.” The move will likely cost McCabe a significant portion of his retirement benefits, though it is possible he could bring a legal challenge. He responded on Friday night with a lengthy statement, claiming he was being targeted because he was a witness in special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s probe into whether the Trump campaign coordinated with Russia and asserting that his actions were appropriate. He also alleged former FBI Director James B. Comey knew about the media disclosure about which the inspector general has raised questions. “This attack on my credibility is one part of a larger effort not just to slander me personally, but to taint the FBI, law enforcement, and intelligence professionals more generally,” McCabe said. “It is part of this Administration’s ongoing war on the FBI and the efforts of the Special Counsel investigation, which continue to this day. Their persistence in this campaign only highlights the importance of the Special Counsel’s work.” Trump tweeted early Saturday morning, “Andrew McCabe FIRED, a great day for the hard working men and women of the FBI – A great day for Democracy. Sanctimonious James Comey was his boss and made McCabe look like a choirboy. He knew all about the lies and corruption going on at the highest levels of the FBI!” An email notifying McCabe of the move was sent to his work account and his lawyers just minutes before Sessions’s statement was made public, though McCabe learned of the firing from press accounts, his spokeswoman said. McCabe has been fighting vigorously to keep his job, and on Thursday, he spent nearly four hours inside the Justice Department pleading his case.)
