(FROM THE ARTICLE: The House has decreed that it will not allow reporters on the floor of the 40,000 square foot BOS Center because of public health and security concerns. When I’ve objected, I’ve been asked why I wanted to be on the floor if I was going to have to remain at least six feet away from everyone else anyway. But adding a relative handful of reporters to a huge hall like that shouldn’t significantly increase viral load. House press credentials are not easily available, so the security concerns are unfounded and even insulting. And folks who are wearing masks are allowed to be closer together than six feet, as should be abundantly clear from these photos taken during the May special session. . .I’ve been tested for COVID-19 and won’t be venturing forth until the results come back and would be happy to provide testing documentation. I never go anywhere in public without wearing a mask, I don’t go to indoor restaurants and bars and nobody comes into my house without wearing a mask. (FROM THE ARTICLE: First, it needs to be established that while so much of the mayhem and vandalism occurring at the U.S. Capitol on January 6 was perpetrated by antifa infiltrators with the intent of making real conservative patriots look bad, many of those who breached the boundaries and entered the Capitol were indeed on the right. Had that not been the case, the victim of the wanton police shooting would have been a leftist, and flags would be flown at half-mast for her from coast to coast, for at least a month. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Written in quill pen (not literally; it was 1965), my master’s thesis was about “Leaderless Politics: The Illinois Republican Party.” Not much has changed. That was an era when party organization mattered. My thesis was that when Republicans lost control of the governorship, the party became leaderless. Not much has changed. Back then, political patronage provided party leaders with influence over elections. My research showed that under GOP Gov. Bill Stratton (1953-60), 83 of the state’s 102 Republican county chairmen held state jobs. Guess who ran the party? Without a governor and jobs, the party was rudderless. First, TV in the 1960s and now billionaire self-funders and donors have replaced political party organizations as the primary conduits to the voters. Patronage is mostly gone, by Supreme Court dictum. Political parties have traditionally had three basic functions: Set forth a platform of values and policies for voters to consider; Recruit attractive candidates, and Work to nominate the candidates in the primary and then get them elected, so they can implement the platform inside government. The Illinois Republican Party does little of this anymore. The role of party platforms has been underappreciated. Party leaders used to wrestle over platform planks at their conventions. The platforms, by a kind of osmosis and over time, provided helpful cues for voters. That is, the GOP favors small business, while the Dems are for the working stiffs. Most of that is gone today, and voters are adrift, captivated yet confused by a Tower of Babel issuing relentlessly from the internet. The Illinois state GOP is a paper tiger. It has no money nor clout over county parties. The county parties are mostly toothless as well. There are exceptions. For example, county GOP chairs Jan Weber in Henry and Aren Hansen in Grundy have in recent years almost singlehandedly turned local offices from Dem to GOP. Mary Brookhart in McDonough County also has a strong county party; her team knows how to get out the vote. The Illinois GOP is at present recruiting a new statewide party chair. Different from a number of states that have large, professional staff and paid chairs, the Illinois party has but one staffer (very sharp Derek Murphy) and a volunteer chair. With megabucks ex-Governor Bruce Rauner gone, the state party has barely two nickels to rub together. The struggle for party control, as if it mattered, is apparently between a Trump-thumping faction versus an “establishment” faction, neither with a clear platform. The old adage that “all politics is local” is no longer true. Successful local candidates in small town and rural Illinois tend to feel they must pay more than lip service to the Trump brand of nativist populism. This effectively leaves lifestyle tolerant, pro-choice, balanced budget, free market, business-friendly folks like me outside the party, or so I feel. What does the future hold for the Illinois GOP? I expect to see Trump 2024 signs soon replacing the thousands of the 2020 versions on lawns and farmyards across mid-America; however, insiders I talk with predict the Trump brand will fade rather quickly, as he likely becomes ensnarled in nasty tax and legal problems. Over the past half century, Republican leaders have also seen their base slip away, literally. Since about 1970, two million or so whites have departed the state in net terms, replaced largely by Latinos and, to a lesser extent, Asian-Americans. When I was a state legislator in 1970, 12% of Illinois residents were of a minority group; today, it is 36%. From 1977 to 2003, the Illinois GOP enjoyed a 26-year, unbroken string of Republican governors. In contrast, this year Joe Biden clobbered Trump in Illinois 57-40 percent, in what pundits call a firmly Blue state. The big prize in 2022 will be the governor’s mansion, not that anyone lives there anymore. Gov. JB Pritzker is considered vulnerable, following his botched, disastrous campaign for increased taxes on high earners, and because of the unenviable role he has in trying to corral COVID-19. In a district on the edges of metropolitan Chicago, GOP Congressman Adam Kinzinger has been critical of Trump while supportive of his policies. He appears to be positioning himself for a run for higher office – governor, close observers report. I also find state Senators Jason Barickman of Bloomington and Sue Rezin of Morris attractive. Both are smart and capable, and might have some appeal in the suburbs. But they and other aspirants from the political ranks must nowadays almost expect outsider megabucks sorts to crash into the GOP’s party. The race will be wide open, and the leaderless state GOP will be but a bystander.)

— To get student draft deferments 1966-1970 and a financial hardship draft deferment 1970-1971. My outstanding father died suddenly in 1969 when he was 47 and I was 21. My outstanding mother had never attended high school and had never worked outside of the home. My brother was attending high school.

— To always have a job. I did yard work and delivered newspapers 1962-1964; washed dishes 1964-1966; cleaned golf shoes, chipped slag, and pumped gasoline in 1966; delivered mail 1966-1969; worked on an automobile assembly line and as a security guard in 1970; sold tires, automotive services, and major appliances 1970-1971; pumped gasoline 1971-1972; collected delinquent taxes 1971-1980; and audited federal agencies 1980-1997. I passed the Post Office employment examination in 1966. I passed the Federal Service Entrance Examination in 1970. I took a $20,157 (21%) pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980. My Democrat GAO superiors succeeded in forcing me to take their early retirement “offer” in 1997 when I was 49 years old. The adverse actions that they had taken against me stopped me from finding a job appropriate for someone with my education, work experience, professional certifications, and professional license.

— To be a union member while I worked for the Post Office 1966-1969 and for IRS 1971-1980.

— To accept a job offer from Oldsmobile. In 1971, Oldsmobile withdrew a job offer that I had accepted saying that Oldsmobile had just agreed to stop hiring Whites to settle an EEOC complaint. That directly resulted in a) Firestone Stores firing me and b) my accepting a job offer from IRS.

— To claim sick leave in 1968 and 1969 while I worked for the Post Office and to file grievances when those claims were denied, to claim partial-day per-diem while I worked for IRS 1973-1974 and to file a grievance when that claim was denied, and to deduct my educational expenses 1972-1981 and 1992-1997 and to go to Small Claims Tax Court when my 1974-1977 deductions were denied.

— To get a job-related bachelor’s degree. I took college preparatory courses at Crete-Monee High School, got into the upper 20% of my 1966 graduating class, got a score of 24 on the ACT, earned/saved enough money washing dishes for the minimum wage to buy a new car in 1966 to commute to/from classes at UIC from my parents’ home in Crete.

— To qualify myself for better paying jobs. I earned a) a job-related bachelor’s degree in management from NIU when I was 21 in 1970 and job-related master’s degrees in business, accounting, and finance from Loyola, DePaul, and IIT when I was 27, 31, and 48, b) job-related professional certifications when I was 30 (CPA) , 32 (Certified Internal Auditor), 41 (Certified Fraud Examiner), 45 (certified Government Financial Manager), 47 (Certified Financial Services Auditor), and 48 (Forensic Accountant), and c) a job-related professional license (CPA) when I was 32. I passed the CPA and Certified Internal Auditor examinations on my first attempt. I grandfathered into the other certifications.

— To not pay rent. I bought a new town home in University Park in 1972, a studio condo in downtown Chicago in 1974, and a one bedroom condo in downtown Chicago in 1976. My wife and I bought a home in Wheaton in 1978 and we had one built in Wheaton in 1984. I walked to work at IRS and to graduate business and accounting courses 1974-1978. I recently bought a 20-foot by 40-foot unit at Iron Gate Motor Condos in Naperville.

— To be the subject of a Money Magazine One Person’s Finances article in 1978. Money Magazine a) foisted negative government employee stereo types on me and painted my education deductions as being improper.

— To get married. I got married in 1978. My wife and I gave up trying to have children, we did not adopt, and we did not become foster parents.

— To save for retirement.

— To buy cars. — To complain to my Democrat superiors in the federal government about political affiliation discrimination, reverse discrimination, age discrimination, and retaliation.

— To became an active member of a class action lawsuit in 1988 when I was 40 years old that charged my Democrat GAO superiors with reverse discrimination, age discrimination, and retaliation.

— To file various lawsuits.

— To become a Republican Precinct Committeeman in 1999, GOPUSA Illinois Editor in 2000, Milton Township Republican Organization (MTRO) webmaster in 2000 and 2008, American Association of Political Consultants Midwest Chapter board member in 2001, Illinois Center Right Coalition Steering Committee member and Wheaton Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee member in 2003, and TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois chairman in 2005. In 2004, I unsuccessfully ran for MTRO Treasurer.

— To support Republican candidates in primaries and caucuses who can and will defend and advance the Republican Party platform.

— To support Republican candidates who win primary elections or caucuses.

— To promote the traditional marriage/family, right to life, immigration, illegal drugs, Second Amendment, and equal opportunity (no race or gender based preference giving) planks in the Republican Party platform.
