http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-met-illinois-conservative-news-20180327-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A copy of the East Central Reporter landed in select mailboxes in 2016 with the look of a typical local newspaper. It had a community calendar. It listed high school sports statistics. And it contained an article about a statehouse candidate’s pitch to voters. But was that story news? Or was it a novel form of political advertising? Recently obtained documents and interviews show that an organization called Think Freely Media helped fund the operation that produced the article for the East Central Reporter’s website. As a nonprofit, Think Freely is forbidden by federal law from engaging in politics, and it has described the articles it funded as news. But State Board of Elections records also show a political committee, Liberty Principles, paid the same private company to publish the story in a print newspaper and mail it. That group, which state law says must spend its money on politicking, has labeled such content political ads. What these organizations have in common is one of the state’s most visible and controversial political figures, Dan Proft. Though Proft is known for backing conservative candidates for office through Liberty Principles, recent tax, business and campaign filings illuminate how other organizations with ties to Proft helped spread his political views through publications that showcase candidates he supports. It’s a situation that encompasses not only ethical questions about a modern tool of Illinois political warfare but also the national discussion over what constitutes “fake news.” Since 2015, thousands of articles have been published in more than two dozen print and online publications tied to Proft, who in addition to heading Liberty Principles has served as a consultant to Think Freely Media. The first articles were produced by a firm run by media entrepreneur Brian Timpone, a longtime friend of Proft’s who has frequently discussed Illinois politics as a guest on Proft’s morning radio show. Timpone’s firm, called Newsinator, also has a history of doing paid political work and offers marketing services to companies under the name Interactive Content Services. After Proft’s political committee paid Newsinator in 2016 to mail print versions of some publications to voters, the state elections board ordered Liberty Principles to identify such materials as political advertising more clearly in the future. But regulators did not impose fines, and since then, records and interviews show, Proft has doubled down on his media venture by teaming with Timpone to start a new private company, Local Government Information Services, that now runs the websites and publications created by Newsinator. (GRAPHIC) The new firm lists 29 websites it controls and 11 print publications, with names ranging from the Grundy Reporter to the North Cook News. The sites typically mix community calendars and local sports coverage, largely computer-generated, with articles that range from statistical dives into local government spending to stories that feature candidates whom Proft’s political committee has supported. The publications’ emergence over the past three years has drawn a range of critics, including Proft’s political opponents in both parties as well as journalists who have worked for traditional news organizations. Among them is Charlie Wheeler, a former longtime Chicago Sun-Times reporter who now directs the public affairs reporting program at the University of Illinois at Springfield. “They purport to be newspapers, but in my judgment they don’t subscribe to the tenets of traditional journalism. They do not provide balanced coverage,” Wheeler said. . .Different views of news. . .Funding a network. . .An ‘electioneering’ paper. . .New company takes over)

The region’s other counties aren’t far behind. The average bill in DuPage County is higher than nearly 98 percent, followed by Kane County and McHenry County (both 96 percent), Cook County (94 percent) and Will County (93 percent). The report covers only counties where there are 10,000 single-family homes or more. In all, the nation has 3,144 counties, or more than twice the number in Attom’s study. Consequently, my Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, gave me unfair performance expectations and appraisals, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, got rid of my mentor in 1987, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take an $19,203 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980. My Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, got rid of my mentor in 1975, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974. If I had been a Democrat, a minority, a female, and/or a veteran, GAO would have offered me a $4,523/year (5%) pay increase in today’s dollars to transfer, that is, a promotion from GS-12 Step 5 ($91,880) to GS-13 Step 1 ($96,403). The consumer bureau, as well as fellow financial regulators like the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, is allowed under federal law to pay employees significantly more than other government agencies can pay. The rationale is that the higher salaries are necessary to recruit skilled employees who otherwise might land jobs on Wall Street. As a result, the C.F.P.B. is stocked with employees who earn more than the average Washington bureaucrat. CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— How is Gov. Rauner in trouble? Let me count the days – Eric Zorn (DIERSEN: What if Rauner promised to take no action that would be against the Illinois Republican Party (IRP) platform? What if Rauner promised that he would defend and advance the IRP platform?)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/zorn/ct-perspec-zorn-rauner-ives-disunity-0406-20180405-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Democratic Governors Association sent another mass email Thursday morning, updating the length of the era of post-primary strife among Illinois Republicans. “Day 16,” began the subject header. That email marked 16 days in which there had been no unity breakfast or other meeting of the minds between the winner of the gubernatorial primary, incumbent Bruce Rauner, and his barely vanquished firebrand conservative opponent, state Rep. Jeanne Ives of Wheaton. Sixteen days in which the two have reportedly not spoken. Sixteen days in which Rauner has not given in to Ives’ demand that he take out an ad admitting that he lied about her during the campaign. Sixteen days in which Ives has declined to retract or soften her blistering attacks on Rauner from the campaign, attacks that included: “Nobody can trust Bruce Rauner, he’s lied to everybody about everything.” He “has failed the integrity test in many ways.” “He basically got nothing done.” And “What the hell is wrong with this governor?” The daily count-up emails from the Democrats are likely to end soon — they’re already starting to feel a little spammy — but DGA spokesman Sal Salustro directed me to a running tally of the days at Medium.com that will continue. “We’re going to keep a focus on it,” he said. “There is no path to victory for Rauner without Ives and her supporters.” Rauner seemed to acknowledge as much during his televised victory speech March 20 after the primary election. “For those of you around Illinois who wanted to send me a message, let me be clear,” he said. “I have heard you.” In fact, however, “I have heard you” was anything but clear under the circumstances. Literally, yes, obviously, Rauner had heard the outraged howls of social conservatives who’d voted for Ives in large part to express their displeasure at his signing a bill expanding abortion rights and his several other deviations from right-wing orthodoxy. “I’ve come to expect politicians to shade the truth, but what’s clear today is that Rauner’s promises were just flat-out lies,” said House GOP floor leader Peter Breen of Lombard after the governor signed the abortion bill. “In the face of overwhelming evidence of Rauner’s inability to competently administer the Illinois government, inability to stand up to Mike Madigan effectively and inability to keep his word and his commitments, I can no longer support him.” Those howls translated into votes — enough that the wealthy incumbent was able to squeak by a scrappy state legislator by fewer than 3 percentage points. But hearing is not heeding, as anyone who has ever deftly deployed the expression “I have heard you” in an argument knows well. What did Rauner mean? That he planned to adopt some of the views of those who had opposed him? Or that these views had registered with him, but he planned to ignore them? Both meanings are politically perilous. If Rauner lurches to the right to placate social conservatives, he risks alienating the moderate voters who provided his narrow margin of victory in 2014, when, as a first-time candidate, he proudly ran with “no social agenda.” And if he fails to apologize or correct course, a significant number of dispirited GOP base voters may well stay home on Election Day in November. So I put the question to Rauner spokesman Justin Giorgio: “What is the message that he heard? What is the message that he believes 48 percent of primary voters are trying to give him? And how will he act upon that message?” Giorgio’s reply: “The governor understands that we all have to work harder to find common ground on the issues we disagree on. He understands the need to engage all Illinoisans to continue making progress on the issues that unite us: cutting taxes, creating jobs and rooting out corruption.” Translation: Pound sand, wing nuts. When it comes down to a choice between me and Democratic nominee J.B. Pritzker, you’ll discover your inner Peter Breen. Rep. Breen, who had been all in for Ives, announced after the primary that “Gov. Rauner stated in the media that he’s heard the message, and I believe he has. (He) is our party’s nominee, and I support him 100 percent.” I wanted to know what message Breen believes Rauner heard, but he did not respond to requests for comment. Sure, primaries are bruising, the rhetoric is heated and pragmatism generally ends up superseding principle when it comes time to vote. Even Ives has said she’ll vote for Rauner (though she’s said her husband will not). Unity breakfasts, like the gathering the Democratic gubernatorial rivals had the Saturday morning after the March 20 primary, are polite agreements to ignore the preceding ugliness and pretend the ideological differences are minor. But that rhetorical salve is important. Parties with open, infected wounds have a hard time getting healthy by the time voters go to the polls. Every day that goes by with Rauner refusing to apologize and Ives refusing to offer a single nice word about him is a day for the Democrats to celebrate. Seventeen days on Friday. And counting.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: County board Chairman Dan Cronin will have 60 days to nominate Fichtner’s replacement. The full county board must approve the appointment. Whoever is appointed will serve until Nov. 30. In the fall, voters will determine who will get the seat for the next four years. http://www.isra.org/News/TabId/1068/ArtMID/4612/ArticleID/28714/ISRA-Thursday-Bulletin-April-5-2018.aspx
(FROM THE BULLETIN: In a few days we will be back in Springfield and the battle to protect our gun rights will be white hot! The first thing we must do is not let the Illinois House and Senate override the Governor’s veto of HB1657. Please contact you legislators immediately. This is a gun ban movement, pure and simple. All of the following bills deserve a NO vote: HB1467 Bans bump stocks and rolls back municipal pre-emption on banning long guns HB1469 Bans all magazines over 10 rounds and makes it a felony for sale, purchase or possession of high capacity magazines and body armor HB1465 Increases age to 21 to possess or purchase a rifle HB1664 Establishes an anonymous snitch line to declare gun owners a “clear and present danger” without any real cause.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: In election season, some Illinois politicians are looking for ways to promise more revenue without inciting the rage of voters, who just saw the largest permanent income tax hike in state history last summer. Enter the progressive income tax. Instead of addressing the things that make state and local governments cost so much, Illinois can solve all its problems by “making the rich pay their fair share,” supporters of a progressive tax argue. This idea has become a key pillar of J.B. Pritzker’s gubernatorial campaign after swirling around the Statehouse air for the past decade or so.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Every four years, Republican Party conventions of precinct committeemen are held in every Illinois county for the purpose of electing state central committee members in each of the state’s congressional districts. The filing deadline was March 26th. Dave Diersen posted a list of contested races. I’ve added incumbent (i) designations… . . . That’s a lot of challenges. I asked Dan Proft if he was behind any of these candidates in an attempt to take over the party. Chris Cleveland was a big Jeanne Ives supporter, for example, as was David Smith, Patrick Harlan and others on that list. Proft’s texted response… Think you’ve got it reversed. It reads to me as if Rauner and his big government apparatchiks are working to continue their purge of conservatives from the party per their backing candidates against McGlasson, Floreth and Winchester. Message to Ives and her supporters: leave the party. I checked in with the ILGOP, former statewide candidate Bob Grogan and the Ives campaign, but haven’t yet heard back. . .KOL: What is going on in the 6th? All three are Rauner allies, so I thought)

ABC7
— YouTube shooter identified as user Nasim Aghdam
http://abc7chicago.com/sources-youtube-shooter-identified-as-user-nasim-aghdam/3298743/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: According to her website, a possible motivation for the shooting could have been tied to her many YouTube accounts, which she says have seen a decline in viewership over the past few months. She embedded videos from the biggest YouTubers on the platform on the site, including massive creator Casey Neistat. In them, they talk about the YouTube “Ad-apocalypse” where many users are seeing massive dips in traffic, subscriber count loss, and de-monetization of videos. Neistat has more than 9,000,000 subscribers and made a famous video about the YouTube ad revenue scare for creators. It appears that Aghdam was disgruntled by the changes in the YouTube platform. She wrote on her website, “Be aware! Dictatorship exists in all countries but with different tactics! They only care for personal and short-term profits and do anything to reach their goals even by fooling simple-minded people, hiding the truth, manipulating science and everything, putting public mental and physical health at risk, abusing non-human animals, polluting the environment, destroying family values, promoting materialism and sexual degeneration in the name of freedom and turning people into programmed robots!” She goes on to quote Adolf Hitler saying, “Make the lie big, make it simple, keep saying it and eventually they will believe it.” The rest of her message targets YouTube and censorship. “There is no free speech in the real world and you will be suppressed for telling the truth that is not supported by the system. Videos of targeted users are filtered and merely relegated so that people can hardly see their videos.” Aghdam’s website shows screenshots of her “reduced” and “supressed” videos. She referred to a specific video that appeared to be an instructional video for a workout saying, “This video got age-restricted after new, close-minded YouTube employees got control of my farsi YouTube channel last year, 2016, and began filtering my videos to reduce views and suppress and discourage me from making my videos!” Feb. 20, YouTube enacted a new advertising policy that demonetized channels with less than 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 hours of watch time. Though Aghdam’s main English channel had more than 5,000 subscribers, many of her videos appeared to be demonetized.)

ONE NEWS NOW
— Next up: Gov’t-endorsed bullying, taunting? If LGBTQ advocates in Illinois get their way, all public school students will be indoctrinated with pro-homosexual propaganda from the time they’re five years old. – Bob Kellogg
https://www.onenewsnow.com/education/2018/04/04/next-up-govt-endorsed-bullying-taunting
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Homosexual and transgender activists have persuaded liberal legislators to sponsor legislation that would require all public school (K-12) textbooks, regardless of the subject, to proclaim positive contributions of homosexuals to society. “[This legislation] would require that any book or book substitute that will be used as a text or text substitute include the ‘role and contributions’ of homosexuals and men and women who adopt opposite-sex persona [a.k.a., transgenderism],” explains Laurie Higgins with the Illinois Family Institute. Two Democratic lawmakers – State Senator Heather Steans and State Representative Anna Moeller – are the sponsors of SB 3249 and HB 5596 respectively. The bills also “require every public elementary school and high school to include in its curriculum a unit of instruction studying the significant role of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals in society.” Higgins warns parents that those who live outside of Illinois shouldn’t brush aside this information, believing it will not affect them. “This will come to other states,” she warns. “It started in California; now it’s coming to Illinois. All it takes is a couple of homosexuals and/or leftists in your state legislature to bring this bill and it will be in your schools, too.” And the danger in that, according to Stella Morabito at The Federalist, is that the highly politicized nature of public schools will essentially “draw virtual targets” on the backs of students whose beliefs don’t align with the school’s. “A bully [would be] free to target with the taunt ‘bigot’ any child who comes from a traditional Christian home – and the curricula will back them up,” Morabito writes. Higgins is convinced that should the legislation pass, Republican Governor Bruce Rauner would sign it into law. It would become effective July 1, 2019. She recommends a two-fold approach to parents at this time: fight the bills – but at the same time “plan an escape route for your children from government schools.”)

What opinion do those who represent you in government and in politics have of the work experience that you have? https://spectator.org/marching-orders-for-trumps-new-va-secretary/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Since President Trump ousted Veterans Administration Secretary David Shulkin, the question reverberating in Washington is whether Trump’s new pick, Admiral Ronny Jackson, is capable of heading a department with 360,000 employees and 9 million vets under its care. Senate Democrats carp he lacks experience running “a complex organization.” Experience is overrated. President Obama’s VA Secretary, Robert McDonald, failed miserably, despite having run Procter & Gamble. Vets died on phony wait lists on McDonald’s watch. . .Pundits are predicting a confirmation battle. The smart money should be on Jackson. He’s combat tested. Disregard the partisan drivel about his lack of experience running a big organization. It’s coming from the same people who had no problem making a community organizer the President.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Indian government called the decree a crackdown on fake news. It lasted less than a day. On Monday evening, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting abruptly announced that it would penalize journalists who spread “fake news,” the term popularized by President Trump to disparage what he has regarded as unfair coverage of his 2016 American presidential campaign and first year in office. The term is now widely used around the world by authoritarian politicians and governments to describe reporting that they find objectionable. https://www.wsj.com/articles/california-a-sanctuary-for-criminals-1522793743
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In Orange County, we reject this kind of reckless behavior. As a member of the Board of Supervisors, I have a say in how to improve my community of 3.2 million residents. We are home to large groups of immigrant communities, and we fully embrace the diverse cultures of our immigrant population. Our concern is about criminal illegal aliens who are falling through the cracks because our sheriff can’t talk to federal immigration agents. On March 27 I introduced a resolution to condemn the state sanctuary law and to direct county counsel to take legal action. Every Orange County supervisor present voted in favor. We currently are reviewing the best ways in which to intervene in the federal government’s lawsuit against California. States cannot simply opt out of federal laws they don’t like. If tomorrow California decided that the First Amendment was a nuisance and passed legislation to restrict this constitutional right, Americans wouldn’t accept the new law. I came to this country with a great respect for the freedom and safety that the Constitution affords its citizens. Condemning the sanctuary law has nothing to do with race or politics. It’s about protecting Americans and their constitutional rights. There’s a long road ahead in fixing our broken immigration system, but, along the way, local law enforcement should cooperate fully with the federal law.)

— More Employees Report Seeing Prohibited Personnel Practices (DIERSEN: While I worked for the federal government for almost 30 years, I saw my Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates commit many PPPs, most commonly, a) discriminating against federal employees because they were Republican, White, male, and/or non-veteran and had not made GS-13 (currently $96,403) by age 25, GS-14 (currently $113,920) by age 30, GS-15 (currently $134,000) by age 35, and Senior Executive Service (currently $164,200) by age 40 and b) wasting the careers of and getting rid of employees who complained about patronage, political affiliation discrimination, reverse discrimination, age retaliation, and/or retaliation.)

http://www.fedweek.com/fedweek/more-employees-report-seeing-prohibited-personnel-practices/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: More federal employees reported in 2016 that they had seen prohibited personnel practices in the workplace than in 2010, MSPB has said in a preview of an upcoming report. A budget-related document notes that until the MSPB board has a quorum—it has lacked one for more than a year although nominees for the two vacant seats recently were named—it cannot issue the kind of studies it conducts regularly into federal personnel issues. However, it gave some detail regarding reports in progress. One shows that in a survey MSPB conducted in 2016, more employees reported observing “PPPs”—which include whistleblower retaliation, various forms of discrimination, decisions not based on merit, and more—compared with a similar survey in 2010. “Notably, only 54 percent of respondents in 2016 indicated that they had observed no PPPs, compared to 78 percent in 2010,” it says. The later survey also found high rates of employees reporting that their agencies are not complying with new PPP created in 2012, that non-disclosure policies must include language stating that the policies do not reduce employee whistleblowing rights. MSPB added that it is working on several other studies that rely in part on the survey data. “Those studies cover areas such as individual drivers of employee engagement, sexual harassment, performance management, effectiveness of the HR workforce, and the Pathways program,” it said.)

http://abc7chicago.com/health/type-2-diabetes-are-you-at-risk/3293346/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: As the years go by, Americans are getting heavier and less active. These factors are directly related to the increased prevalence of diabetes. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 30 million American adults – nearly 10 percent – have been diagnosed with the disease. The majority of people diagnosed with the condition have type 2 diabetes. This type of diabetes occurs when you produce insulin but your body’s cells are unable to use it as efficiently as they should. This leads to the pancreas producing extra insulin to get glucose to your cells but eventually sugar builds up in your blood instead. The main risk factors for developing type 2 diabetes include: Genetics – Your DNA can affect how your body makes insulin African-American, Native American, Asian-American or Hispanic ethnicity Being overweight or obese – a BMI over 25 (my BMI is 30), especially if you carry extra weight around your waist Inactivity Poor nutrition High blood pressure High cholesterol Even if you do not have any of the risk factors for diabetes, you could still develop the disease. In fact, we’re seeing diabetes at younger ages and in populations where it wasn’t prevalent in the past. Even if you’re not at high risk on paper, it’s important to get routine checkups with your primary care physician. He or she can evaluate your blood glucose level with a fasting blood sugar test.)

— DIERSEN HEADLINE: Ever-increasingly, pot pushers use arguments that are outrageous, disgusting, and even worse things to push pot. Who will stand with me against pot? Virtually all my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes talk and/or act like a) they smoke pot, b) they want to smoke pot legally, c) they want to make lots on money selling pot, and/or d) they what governments to take in lots of tax revenue from the sale pot.

— Lawmakers shouldn’t compromise on keeping salary history private – Editorial (DIERSEN: Ever-increasingly, you are demonized, denigrated, and condemned as being a White supremacist, Nazi, KKK member, hater, racist, sexist, bigot, and even worse things if you do not shout a) that minorities and females are underpaid and b) that government employees are overpaid. My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have always shouted that I was overpaid. In my defense, I earned a) a job-related bachelor’s degree when I was 21 in 1970 and job-related master’s degrees when I was 27, 31, and 48, b) job-related professional certifications when I was 30, 32, 41, 45, 47, and 48, and c) a job-related professional license when I was 32.)
https://chicago.suntimes.com/opinion/lawmakers-shouldnt-compromise-on-keeping-salary-history-private/
(FROM THE EDITORIAL: It’s a simple concept: Your current pay stub is your business when you apply for a new job. Asking applicants for a salary history helps to perpetuate wage discrimination and the gender pay gap, given women’s long history of unequal pay. Besides that, it’s a turnoff for job seekers across the board, who worry about killing their chances for an interview because they’re already making too much or too little. If an employer offers you a prestigious job that’s worth a big salary, they should pay you that salary regardless of past earnings. If you’re willing to take a pay cut because the job itself is more attractive, that’s a decision you should be able to freely make.)

His legal experience, independence and willingness to engage with conservative grassroots activists speaks volumes. Unfortunately, Harold has avoided publicly answering questions from conservative organizations, including failing to respond to candidate surveys from pro-life organizations in the state. CAPITOL FAX
— Ives spokesperson says no talks yet with Rauner (DIERSEN: Rauner defeated Ives in the Republican primary by running against the traditional family, right to life, immigration, and other planks in the Illinois Republican Party platform. Maybe Rauner plans on defeating Pritzker in the general election by doing the same thing.)
https://capitolfax.com/2018/04/02/ives-spokesperson-says-no-talks-yet-with-rauner/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Day 13: Rauner and Ives Feud Moves into Second Month It’s no April Fool’s joke – Governor Bruce Rauner’s and state Representative Jeanne Ives’ GOP feud is moving into its second month. Thirteen days ago, Ives nearly knocked off the incumbent Rauner by running a primary campaign on his dishonesty and management failures. Now, the calendar turns to April and Rauner has still not spoken with Ives or earned the trust of her supporters. Last week, Ives demanded Rauner run ads apologizing for his dishonesty before she would endorse him. And Ives’ supporters do not sound like they are happy with Rauner’s minimal efforts of reconciliation. “The longer Bruce Rauner lets his feud with Jeanne Ives fester, the harder it will be to bring his divided party back together,” said DGA Illinois Communications Director Sam Salustro. “With his rock-bottom approval ratings, Rauner’s already damaging his failing re-election campaign by allowing this battle to enter its second month.”)

ACCURACY IN MEDIA
— Howard University Students Hold Building Hostage (DIERSEN: While I worked for the federal government for almost 30 years, it offered either no reimbursement for tuition for job-related college courses or just a token reimbursement. My superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates in the federal government used that non-reimbursement policy to justify their not taking job-related college courses. Nevertheless, I spent a tremendous amount of my own time and my own money taking courses to earn a job-related bachelor’s degree in 1970, earning three job-related master’s degrees in 1976, 1980, and 1997, and earning two job-related professional certifications in 1979 and 1981.)

https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/right-turn/wp/2018/04/02/five-democratic-arguments-that-might-resonate-in-the-suburbs/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Democrats seem to be coming to the realization that their traditional base — single women, minorities, young voters, college-educated voters, urban dwellers — is perfectly compatible with other demographic cross-sections of America (e.g. married women, suburbanites, #NeverTrump Republicans). Moreover, occasional voters (e.g. millennials) can become spirited activists and off-year voters if given enough reason to turn out. There is no shortage of issues that can bring together all these voters. We’ll start with just five that might resonate in the suburbs, with college-educated women and with disaffected Republicans — and also, in some cases, might help turn out traditional Democratic constituents.)
— Trump administration, seeking to speed deportations, to impose quotas on immigration judges – Nick Miroff (DIERSEN: Were quotas imposed on your superiors? All during the almost 30 years that I worked for the federal government, Democrat politicians imposed quotas, goals, and targets on my superiors a) to hire, to retain, and to promote young Democrat minorities and young Democrat females and b) to make way for them by wasting the careers of and by getting rid of their employees who were Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran.)

— Rauner-Pritzker a classic capital-labor fight Fundamental conflict of history flares up anew – Jim Nowlan (DIERSEN: Overwhelmingly, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes are anti-labor. They stress that I was a union member for almost 12 years 1966-1969 and 1971-1980. They stress that I was a lowly wage earner – I did yard work and delivered newspapers 1962-1964; washed dishes 1964-1966; cleaned golf shoes, chipped slag, and pumped gasoline in 1966; delivered mail 1966-1969; worked on an automobile assembly line and as a security guard in 1970; sold tires, automotive services, and major appliances 1970-1971; pumped gasoline 1971-1972; collected delinquent taxes 1971-1980; and audited federal agencies 1980-1997.)

WTKR
— Trump designates April ‘Second Chance Month’ for people with criminal records – CNN (DIERSEN: What is in your record that discourages employers from hiring you, from retaining you, and/or from promoting you? From what I see, the more of the following that you are, the more that employers DO NOT WANT YOU: Trump supporter, Protestant, conservative, patriotic, Republican, American, White, male, older, rich, gun owner, German American, draft avoider, and if your ancestors have been in America for a long time.)
http://wtkr.com/2018/03/30/trump-designates-april-second-chance-month-for-people-with-criminal-records/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The proclamation states that during the month of April, the United States will emphasize the need “to provide opportunities for people with criminal records to earn an honest second chance.” A bipartisan group of senators, including Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois and Republican Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio, introduced a resolution last year to make April 2017 “Second Chance Month” to honor efforts to help those with criminal records become productive members of society. The Senate passed the resolution in April of last year. A similar resolution was introduced by Democratic Rep. Tony Cardenas of California last week. “Affording those who have been held accountable for their crimes an opportunity to become contributing members of society is a critical element of criminal justice that can reduce our crime rates and prison populations, decrease burdens to the American taxpayer, and make America safer,” Trump said in his proclamation. The President goes on to urge the implementation of “evidence-based programs” in prison systems at the federal, state and local level that focus on job training, mentoring and treatment for drug and mental health issues. Trump made promises to crack down on crime a prominent part of his 2016 campaign for the White House. In a speech at the Republican National Convention after winning the Republican presidential nomination, Trump vowed that under his leadership the US would “be a country of law and order.”)

— Ivy degree – now what? Low-income grads struggle with careers, status Many low-income students who are the first generation in their families to go to college feel pressure to succeed and grapple with one of the most difficult transitions in a modern, developed society – moving from one socioeconomic class to another. – Laura Pappano (DIERSEN: What socioeconomic class were you born into? Neither of my outstanding parents attended college. My father was the first of his ancestors to earn a high school diploma. My mother never attended high school. My father fought type 1 diabetes from age 14, worked in the office of a nasty chemical plant, almost always worked second jobs to pay the family’s bills, did not buy a new car until he was 45 and it was a bottom-of-the-line two-door Chevy, and died suddenly of heart failure in 1969 when he was 47 and I was 21.)

(FROM THE EDITORIAL: Americans think they have a progressive political correctness problem, but the politicization of everything runs across the Western democracies. Witness the new code of conduct issued by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, which oversees more than 389,000 health-care providers. The new code, published this month, requires nurses and midwives to uphold “culturally safe and respectful practices.” The board defines this as a “de-colonising model of practice” focused on “systemic and structural issues” and “challeng[ing] racism at personal and institutional levels.” Most controversially, the glossary states that “the acknowledgment of white privilege” is part of culturally safe practice. The implication is that nurses must confess their sins of being born white and having learned how to care for patients as a kind of political expiation before they can treat someone.)

FORT WAYNE BUSINESS WEEKLY
— Researchers call for action against fake news – Doug LeDuc (DIERSEN: According to my critics/opponents, all news is fake except for the news that they put out or bless.)
http://www.fwbusiness.com/columns/technology/article_9f542775-5d7f-5bfc-9056-1642e597596a.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A professor at Indiana University’s School of Informatics, Computing and Engineering co-authored an essay for the journal “Science” calling for a coordinated investigation into the forces behind fake news. Filippo Menczer is a member of IU’s Center for Complex Networks and Systems Research. His co-authors for the paper included researchers at high-profile organizations such as Microsoft, Harvard, MIT and Yale. They said companies with platforms used by massive audiences to produce and consume information, such as Facebook, Google and Twitter, have an “ethical and social responsibility transcending market forces” to contribute to scientific research on fake news. The paper was published in the academic journal a little more than a week after 13 Russians were indicted for involvement in a “troll farm” operation that spread false information connected with the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Menczer is founder of the IU Observatory on Social Media, which provides tools for identifying automated social media accounts and analyzing how misinformation spreads across social networks. Estimates in the paper put the number of automated “bots” at 60 million on Facebook and up to 48 million on Twitter. The Twitter estimate was based on a study Menczer and colleagues had conducted recently. “The spreaders of fake news are using increasingly sophisticated methods,” Menczer said in a statement about the essay. “If we don’t have enough quantifiable information about the problem, we’ll never be able to design interventions that work. This paper is really a call to groups across the globe – academics, journalists and private industry – to work together to attack this problem.” The paper proposes changes to algorithms the authors say increasingly control online access to information as well as high school courses designed to help students recognize illegitimate news sources. “The challenge is there are so many vulnerabilities we don’t yet understand and so many different pieces that can break or be gamed or manipulated when it comes to fake news,” Menczer said. “It’s such a complex problem that it must be attacked from every angle.” “What we want to convey most is that fake news is a real problem, it’s a tough problem, and it’s a problem that requires serious research to solve.”)

CHRON
— Qualifications for Political Strategists – Michael Mageean
http://work.chron.com/qualifications-political-strategists-23250.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A political strategist, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, is a senior political consultant who designs and directs election campaigns for politicians. Most employers require a bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, English or business or even a master’s degree. But at a strategist’s level you’ll need qualifications gained from at least 10 years delivering results in the field in areas like managing the media and fundraising during campaigns. Strategic Thinker A senior consultant needs to be a strategic thinker to effectively solve problems based on past experience using analogical reasoning. Other approaches like deductive reasoning or simple trial and error might not be possible in a fast-moving electoral contest where the story is changing by the hour. This is why a strategist needs a voluminous knowledge of previous elections. Media Master A political strategist will have to be a master at handling the media in order to get his message out to the electorate. Using the media is about timing and presentation. He needs to know how journalists think and how a newsroom schedule works. An election strategist must also be proficient in organizing events like fundraising dinners. These provide campaign funds and are also media events where the candidate delivers speeches and sound bites for broadcast. Master of the Political Message A political strategist has to have a whole communications package to electrify voters. The strategist needs to create a persona and media image for his client that appeals to as many voters as possible. Once he’s crafted the image he’ll have to stage photo opportunities and media events so he can display it to the electorate. A strategist needs to work with the candidate on speeches and answers to questions so the right message will be communicated on the campaign trail and in front of the TV cameras. Extensive and High-Quality Contacts Success comes and goes for a senior political consultant, but what he has to consistently maintain is a high-quality network of contacts. If he has these he will always be in demand because he can secure funding for his clients and introductions to powerful patrons and backers. He is a gatekeeper to powerful supporters and must also act as a cogent persuader to convince them to get behind his client.)

STUDY
— Become a Political Consultant: Step-by-Step Career Guide
https://study.com/articles/Become_a_Political_Consultant_Step-by-Step_Career_Guide.html

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Political consultants work on election campaigns for political candidates. They may help candidates develop media strategies, explain their platforms to the public, create advertisements, respond to opponents or engage in fundraising. Other consultants may work in research or polling. In the former type of job, they investigate the major issues in a campaign or a candidate’s opponent, while in the latter they ask the public how they feel about a candidate. This information can then be used to develop a candidate’s election campaign strategy. Some of these consultants’ job tasks overlap with those of political scientists, who are similar to consultants. Political consultants work full-time, though they often put in overtime hours to meet deadlines or deal with crises. The job can be stressful, but it pays a salary that is much higher than the national average. Though there is strong competition for these jobs, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts the field will grow at a faster-than-average rate over the coming decade.)

— 6 Days of Silence: Rauner and Ives Won’t Talk… But Maybe They Text? (DIERSEN: What is Rauner’s response to this?)
https://democraticgovernors.org/news/6-days-of-silence-rauner-and-ives-wont-talk-but-maybe-they-text/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: It’s been six days since Governor Bruce Rauner was thoroughly embarrassed by state Representative Jeanne Ives, who earned 48% of the Republican primary vote. Despite Rauner’s obvious need to patch things up with his primary opponent, the two have not spoken since the election. In fact, Ives spent most of last week trashing the wounded governor even more. Rauner said he has not spoken with Ives, but maybe he tried to reach her via text. It probably went something like this: . . . “Bruce Rauner’s lies and betrayals divided the Republican Party so badly that his primary opponent refuses to speak with him,” said DGA Illinois Communications Director Sam Salustro. “Rauner’s failed leadership turned away Democrats and Independents, and now 48% of Republican voters. With no accomplishments and no supporters, Rauner truly is the most vulnerable incumbent in the nation.”)

GOPUSA ILLINOIS
— Rich Miller, Natasha Korecki, and other political reporters and journalists are on vacation. If my wife and I were to take a vacation, something we have not done since the 1990s, who would you want to fill in for me, how much money would they demand, and how much money should I pay them? To put out GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails each and every morning and each and every evening like I do, applicants would have to agree to:

– spend 10+ hours each and every day putting the emails together and sending them out,

– be able to digest very quickly many hundreds of Google news alerts and many other article leads that come in 24 hours a day,

– be able to visit many relevant websites very quickly and find relevant articles that are often buried in those websites very quickly,

– skim the most recent edition of the hardcopies of the following publications for relevant articles very quickly before sending the emails out: Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times, Daily Herald, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, USA Today, Naperville Sun, Wheaton Leader, Crain’s Chicago Business, and other publications,

– work without a proofreader unless they pay for one with their own money,

– have tremendous knowledge of past and present Republican primary elections, general elections, governments, politics, activists, candidates, elected officials, party leaders, major donors, political consultants, etc. in Illinois,

– having attended all the Illinois GOP state conventions as a delegate at least since 2000,

– have always supported all the planks in the Republican Party platform, the Illinois Republican Party platform, and the Milton Township Republican Central Committee resolution against video gambling,

– have no skeletons in their closets, that is, that they have never done anything that subjects them to blackmail or prosecution,

– be able to deal with my nasty, rude, cruel, mean, vicious critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes who have always and will always blame GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails for all their problems, for all of your problems, for all of my problems, and for all of everyone’s problems,

– be able to deal with my nasty, rude, cruel, mean, vicious critics/opponents who will threaten to destroy you unless you carry out their blacklist orders and their other orders,

– have excellent health and exceptional ability to deal with lots of stress,

– college degree in journalism or equivalent work experience, for example, having worked for GAO for almost 18 years, the last 11 years of which at the GS-13 Step 1-10 levels, currently $96,403-$125,325,

The aforesaid assumes that the applicant would live in my home while my wife and I would be on vacation and that he/she would use my computer equipment and software, internet access, Constant Contact account, WordPress website, newspaper and other publican subscriptions, etc. or have equivalent alternative resources.

How much money would applicants for the job demand – $1,000/day, $2,000/day, $3,000/day, $4,000/day, $5,000+/day? – Dave Diersen

http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20180327/news/303279995/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Leaders of Orange County, California, planned Tuesday to consider fighting a state law aimed at protecting immigrants from stepped-up deportations under the Trump administration. The backlash to the state’s so-called sanctuary law comes a week after the small city of Los Alamitos in Orange County voted to opt out of the policy. The all-Republican supervisors of the Southern California county of 3.2 million people were expected to discuss passing a resolution in support of Los Alamitos and whether to join the U.S. government’s lawsuit over the law, which bars police in many cases from turning over suspects to federal immigration agents for deportation. “This legislation prevents law enforcement from removing criminals from our community and is a threat to public safety,” said Supervisor Shawn Nelson, who has proposed joining the lawsuit by President Donald Trump’s administration or filing a new one. Orange County, which is home to Disneyland and wealthy beach communities where many people vacation, has a five-member board of supervisors, and all are Republican. While Republicans still outnumber Democrats in the county, Democrats have gained significant ground in recent years, and Hillary Clinton won more votes than Trump in Orange County in the 2016 presidential election. California, a liberal state that is home to more than 10 million immigrants, passed its sanctuary law last year to limit local police collaboration with U.S. immigration authorities.)

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
— Next thing you know, cemeteries will be voting in DuPage – Editorial (DIERSEN: Since 2015, there have been two cemeteries in my DuPage County Milton Township Precinct 9 in Wheaton – Wheaton Cemetery (http://wheatoncemetery.org/) and St. Michael’s Cemetery (https://www.parishesonline.com/find/st-michaels-cemetery). Of my precinct’s 504 registered voters, according to the DuPage County Election Commission (DCEC), 105 (21%) cast Republican Ballots, 98 (19%) cast Democrat ballots, and 301 (60%) did not vote. Beyond outrageously, beyond unacceptably, in 2015, the DCEC let my critics/opponents unethically gerrymander my precinct to punish me and Jeanne Ives. The DCEC let my critics/opponents a) take away about 100 residences on the west side of my precinct and b) give me about 100 residences out Ives’ precinct to the east. The DCEC let my critics/opponents draw Ives into my precinct. But then, my critics/opponents drew her out of my new precinct and into Precinct 65 because she asked them to.)
https://chicago.suntimes.com/opinion/next-thing-you-know-cemeteries-will-be-voting-in-dupage/
(FROM THE EDITORIAL: Oh, DuPage County, have you forgotten who you are? Generations of Chicagoans fled to you, DuPage, to escape the political corruption of the big bad city. In Chicago, the rule of thumb was to “vote early and often.” In DuPage, a single honorable vote, almost always for a Republican, sufficed. In Chicago, the quiet residents of cemeteries voted. In DuPage, only the living, if sometimes barely. In Chicago, vote returns from the “river wards” could be held up for hours, allowing for a little late-night skullduggery to put a Machine favorite in a tight race over the top. In DuPage, goodness no. But on Tuesday in DuPage, the election process looked about as squared away as in Chicago circa 1947. Final voting results were not released until roughly eight hours after the polls closed, about 3 a.m. A skeptic might wonder if everything was on the up and up. We’re told it was a hardware problem. Elections judges were unable to get results from scanning machines, which are used to read paper ballots, and the judges had to lug 268 of the machines to the election commission office in Wheaton to tally the results. Now, on Tuesday, election officials will be on the hot seat. The DuPage County Board has asked them to attend a board meeting to explain what went wrong and how to fix it. “I promise you, there’s going to be changes,” County Board President Dan Cronin told the Daily Herald. “I am not done with this.” But there’s little mystery about what should be done — it was right on the ballot. An advisory referendum question asked voters whether the DuPage County Election Commission should be dissolved and its responsibilities taken over by the office of the county clerk. Fifty-six percent of the voters said that was a good idea. After Tuesday’s show of incompetence by the election commission, you can bet that even more voters now would say that’s a good idea. Cronin, who has been a leader in Illinois in trying to eliminate unnecessary units of government, is pushing the merger, which he says would make the election process more accountable and save DuPage taxpayers $300,000 a year. But the change requires a change in state law, and the Legislature has been slow to go along. Why? Because the Legislature is always slow to go along when it comes to eliminating unnecessary units of government. It’s about jobs and political turf. For the same reason, the Legislature has been insufficiently aggressive in eliminating township governments. Cronin is right. The DuPage Election Commission bungled it badly on Tuesday. And we were feeling the ghosts of those old Chicago ward heelers.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Stakes are high for Raoul, Harold in race to succeed Attorney General Lisa Madigan – Bill Lukitsch
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-met-kwame-raoul-erika-harold-attorney-general-20180322-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: On the other is Harold, a conservative who has never held elected office and calls herself a “political outsider.” She is opposed to abortion and same-sex marriage but has vowed to uphold all of the state’s laws. Harold has accused Madigan of failing to take an interest in public corruption during her tenure, noting that her father is Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan. And she’s backed by his chief political nemesis, Gov. Bruce Rauner. . .Harold disputes the suggestion she would be beholden to Rauner, noting that she has split with him over his decision to sign legislation expanding access to abortion. Even so, she says she will uphold that law and others she may personally disagree with. “The job of the attorney general is to enforce the law,” Harold said. “It’s not to impose your own agenda. It is to make sure that the laws are enforced uniformly and fairly, and I’m committed to doing that.” Rauner’s campaign gave Harold $305,000, and the governor has said he “personally recruited” her in part to “prosecute corruption against the Madigan clan and their network.” Harold first became well-known as the 2003 winner of the Miss America pageant. She says her “priorities are not partisan in nature” and will resonate with voters regardless of political affiliation. Still, Harold mirrors Rauner in promising to fight corruption within state government. She said she wants the legislature to provide additional powers for the attorney general, including the ability to convene a grand jury and issue subpoenas. “I think the priority of public corruption will be an issue where we may differ, and I think it’s important to emphasize fighting public corruption because both parties should be held accountable,” Harold said of Raoul. Harold works for a Champaign-based firm where she specializes in business law. She first sought public office in 2014, losing a Republican primary for Congress to U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis of Taylorville. She ran on a conservative social platform and since has been accused by her unsuccessful primary opponent of softening her position on conservative ideas to comport with the governor’s socially centrist agenda. Harold’s stance against same-sex marriage has served as a flashpoint in her primary bid. According to the book “Being Miss America: Behind the Rhinestone Curtain” by former Miss America Kate Shindle, Harold’s “ultra-conservative views” had kept her from winning the Miss Illinois pageant for several years. Shindle writes that Harold was asked in a pageant interview about adoption by same-sex couples. “Harold reportedly stated that she would choose to place a child in an abusive heterosexual home rather than with a loving gay couple,” the book says. Harold said she did not remember that exchange, saying she supports same-sex adoption and foster parenting, and “if I said what they alleged, it’s absolutely wrong.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Rauner has shown that you can’t be fiscally conservative and say you are not socially conservative.” This was at the core of Ives’ campaign — Rauner isn’t a Republican, we are. She said as much during a campaign stop in February during the Williamson County Republican Women’s Lincoln Day Luncheon. “He’s not part of the ‘we,’” she said in an interview after her speech, referring to the Republican party. During her address in February, Ives thrashed Rauner’s dealings with Democrats, particularly on a controversial piece of legislation last year that loosened regulations allowing state medical dollars to be used for abortions. She said reaching across the aisle on party issues this way was a sign of weakness — she said “capitulating” to the opposition showed vulnerability and this was not quality in a leader.)

DEMOCRATIC GOVERNORS ASSOCIATION
— FOX News: Bruce Rauner is “Friendless” (DIERSEN: Of course, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes hint/imply/argue/shout that if anyone else had been the Republican Precinct Committeeman in DuPage County Milton Township Precinct 9 since 1999, a) far more than just 105 of its 504 registered voters would have cast Republican ballots in the March 20, 2018 primary election, b) far fewer than 98 would have cast Democrat ballots, and c) many, if not most, if not virtually all of the 301 who did not vote would have cast Republican ballots. In my defense, as I have reported to the DuPage County Election Commission, 20 of the 504, including Chris Hage and his wife, no longer live in the precinct. Further, since 1999, those who dominate the Milton Township Republican Central Committee, the DuPage County Republican Central Committee, and the Illinois Republican Party have done everything that they can to discredit me with the voters in my precinct. Officially, they hint/imply/argue/shout that I am “too conservative” and because of that, candidates that I might promote in primaries are “too conservative” to win general elections. But from what see, having lived in my precinct since 1984, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes hint/imply/argue/shout under the table and below the belt at the voters in my precinct and at everyone else that I am a White supremacist, Nazi, KKK member, hater, racist, sexist, bigot, and even worse things.
