CRAIN’S CHICAGO BUSINESS
— Roskam’s intriguing immigration move – GREG HINZ (DIERSEN: Those who want Roskam to lose a) want Roskam to dump Trump, b) want Roskam to dump all those who voted for Trump, c) stress that in the 2016 general election, only 137 voted for Trump in my precinct while 211 voted for Clinton, and d) stress that in the 2016 primary election, only 21 voted for Trump while 93 voted for Kasich.)
http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20180615/BLOGS02/180619894/roskams-intriguing-immigration-move
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In what some are interpreting as a clear break with the president, embattled west suburban U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam, R-Wheaton, is putting some distance between himself and the Trump administration on the volatile issue of whether to seize and separately hold the children of immigrant parents who are arrested for illegally trying to enter the country. But the size and duration of the distance isn’t quite clear yet. And Roskam’s Democratic re-election foe, Sean Casten, promptly attacked Roskam’s action as inadequate. Roskam’s move came in a statement late yesterday, in which he said that “dragging children away from their parents” should not be a means to securing the U.S. border. “The events unfolding at our nation’s borders are heartbreaking. Being forcibly separated from a child is a parent’s worst nightmare and I cannot fathom the pain these families are enduring,” said Roskam, who already was under pressure from major donors and others to do something to break the immigration standoff. “Every day these children spend apart from their parents, confused, scared, and alone, inflicts additional and unnecessary trauma.” “While I believe we have a responsibility to secure our borders, I also believe that how we treat strangers reflects the moral values this country was founded on. Dragging children away from their parents ought not be a part of the solution,” he continued. “I stand with residents of the 6th District and urge the Department of Justice and Homeland Security to reverse the zero tolerance policy that removes children from their parents at the border.” U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions shows no sign of doing so. In a speech yesterday, he even cited a Bible passage—once used to defend slavery—in arguing that God wants citizens to obey the laws of their country. All he’s doing is enforcing a law that Democrats and former President Barack Obama could have changed, Sessions and Trump have said. But Obama didn’t enforce the law in the way Session has, grabbing pre-teen children and holding them in camps and other facilities sometimes thousands of miles away, with little if any contact with their parents. So, what is Roskam going to do to pursue his views and change U.S policy? Roskam’s spokeswoman said he would have supported compromise legislation that House Speaker Paul Ryan is pushing to end family division while giving Trump some things he wants, such as money for the Mexican wall. But Trump today said he wouldn’t sign it, dealing the bill a possibly fatal blow. Given that, what will Roskam do now to turn up pressure on Sessions, Trump and others to back off? Roskam apparently wants to let the dust settle for a few days and see what happens next. Casten is pouncing. “Congress is supposed to be a ‘check’ on the President, not a rubber stamp. It’s clear that neither the Department of Justice nor the Department of Homeland security will act against the president’s wishes,” Casten’s campaign said in a statement. “So we need a Congress with the backbone to pass a law and make this stop. Peter Roskam won’t do it. Sean Casten will. And that’s the fundamental difference in this campaign between an independent Democrat and a Trump Republican who votes with his leader 94 percent of the time.” No word yet on where the Chicago area’s two other GOP congressmen, Randy Hultgren of Plano and Adam Kinzinger of Channahon, stand. But watch for this issue to get increased attention because, even today, TV film of scared kids locked up away from their mom and dad is horrible politics.)

— Promoted six times and then fired: Inside a 24-year-old political appointee Taylor Weyeneth’s wild ride in Trump’s Washington – Robert O’Harrow Jr. (DIERSEN: When did you start earning $100,000-a-year in to today’s dollars (GS-13 Step 3)? I did in 1988 when I was 40 years old. By then, I had worked for GAO for almost 9 years, I had worked for IRS for almost 9 years, I had become a licensed CPA in 1981, I had passed the Certified Internal Auditor examination on my first attempt in 1981, I had earned a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul in 1980, I had passed the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979, and I had earned an MBA from Loyola in 1976.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: He was one of the fastest-rising political appointees of the Trump administration, an unpaid campaign intern with no professional experience who soared into a top job with a six-figure salary at the White House’s drug policy office. But on Jan. 14, in the hours after a front-page Washington Post story cast doubt on his résumé and qualifications, 24-year-old Taylor Weyeneth was feeling vulnerable. “Can I ask you what the plan is for me now,” Weyeneth texted the White House official who had promoted him. “You’re fine. No action required,” Sean Doocey, then deputy director of the Office of Presidential Personnel, wrote back. “It is garbage journalism by a garbage newspaper.” Two months later, Weyeneth was gone — demoted, told not to speak publicly and finally fired as the political fallout spread. This is the inside account of a political appointee’s time in Trump’s Washington. It’s the story of a young operative whose central qualification was loyalty and whose responsibilities included furnishing the White House with intelligence about career employees at a time when the administration distrusts the standing bureaucracy to an unusual degree.)

HARVARD BUSINESS REVIEW
— MAY 21, 2018 FLASHBACK: Why It’s So Hard to Speak Up Against a Toxic Culture – Francesca Gino (DIERSEN: I should write a book about the toxic culture in GAO’s Chicago office while I worked there 1980-1997. The culture was especially toxic for its employees who were Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran.)
https://hbr.org/2018/05/why-its-so-hard-to-speak-up-against-a-toxic-culture
(FROM THE ARTICLE: One reason people don’t speak up is the significant risk of doing so. Challenging the status quo threatens people’s status and relationships with supervisors and coworkers, research shows. Speaking up can also result in negative performance evaluation, undesirable job assignments, or even termination. Most people are aware of these potential costs; as a result, most stay quiet about bias, injustice, and mistreatment. Then there is the bystander effect: When a person is in trouble, others who are present often fail to intervene, whether because they assume other people will or because they think it’s not their place to act. The more costly intervening would be, the less likely we are to do so.)

WINDY CITY TIMES
— Equality Illinois Urges Gov. Rauner to Extend Non-Discrimination Protections to All Illinois Workplaces (DIERSEN: Have you ever worked for an employer that had 14 or fewer employees? While I worked for employers 1964-1997, I worked for an employer that had 14 or fewer employees for about 2 months in 1966.)
http://www.windycitymediagroup.com/lgbt/EI-Urges-Gov-Rauner-to-Extend-Non-Discrimination-Protections-to-All-Illinois-Workplaces-/63218.html

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Equality Illinois urges Gov. Bruce Rauner to sign legislation that would extend Illinois’ workplace non-discrimination protections to businesses of all sizes in the state and ensure all Illinoisans have access to the legal tools of justice when they experience employment discrimination. Under current law, workers in businesses of 14 and fewer employees outside of Cook County can still be fired for being LGBTQ, a racial minority, a woman, because of their faith, and for other reasons based on their personal identities. The Illinois General Assembly passed the important civil rights measure, House Bill 4572, ending that exclusion and extending protections to thousands more workers, with bipartisan support during the spring session. The bill was delivered to the governor’s office on Thursday.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Trump’s legal team dealt setback in defamation suit – Mark Berman and Frances Stead Sellers (DIERSEN: According to Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defamation), “There are several things a person must prove to establish that libel has taken place. In the United States, a person must prove that 1) the statement was false, 2) caused harm, and 3) was made without adequate research into the truthfulness of the statement. These steps are for an ordinary citizen. For a celebrity or public official, a person must prove the first three steps, and that the statement was made with the intent to do harm or with reckless disregard for the truth, which is usually specifically referred to as “actual malice.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Last week, with a high-stakes summit with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un on the horizon and plenty of news coverage in the Daily Herald and elsewhere about an “Impeach Trump” yard sign in Elgin, Ernest Lasse decided that someone ought to show some support for the president. Lasse installed in front of his Mount Prospect home a roughly 15-square-foot plywood sign reading “TRUMP” in big red letters, surrounded by the words “Make America Great Again.” Not being naive, Lasse knew the sign wouldn’t be popular with everyone. He set up a camera in his front window to capture video of anyone who would do the sign harm. Sure enough, footage shows that a pair of young men came along about 9:30 p.m. Friday and stole the sign from the yard. Lasse found pieces of it the next morning on the bank of nearby Weller Creek. Police were called, reports were written and charges are possible. But before he pursues a formal complaint, Lasse has an offer he hopes the vandals can’t refuse.)

Roskam’s comments come amid a national debate that grew more acrimonious on Thursday after U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions defended the practice, citing the Bible: “I would cite you to the Apostle Paul and his clear and wise command in Romans 13, to obey the laws of the government because God has ordained them for the purpose of order. If you cross the Southwest border unlawfully, then the Department of Homeland Security will arrest you and the Department of Justice will prosecute you. Having children does not give you immunity from arrest and prosecution.” At a contentious White House press briefing, press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders defended that stance, saying: “I can say that it is very biblical to enforce the law. That is actually repeated a number of times throughout the Bible.” Roskam joins other Republicans, including Speaker Paul Ryan, to raise concerns with the policy. Roskam’s statement on Thursday called for a full reversal. “The events unfolding at our nation’s borders are heartbreaking. Being forcibly separated from a child is a parent’s worst nightmare and I cannot fathom the pain these families are enduring. Every day these children spend apart from their parents, confused, scared, and alone, inflicts additional and unnecessary trauma,” Roskam said in a statement. “While I believe we have a responsibility to secure our borders, I also believe that how we treat strangers reflects the moral values this country was founded on. Dragging children away from their parents ought not be a part of the solution.” Roskam has been under intense pressure by both constituents and donors to come up with a resolution on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. Roskam’s suburban district has the largest DACA population of any Illinois member, according to the Illinois Business Immigration Commission. He’s faced regular protests in his district, including from advocates who have called for him to fix DACA.)

Kapos, a former columnist for the Sun-Times and Crain’s Chicago Business, has been blogging — Taking Names at ShiaKapos.com — and covering corporate governance for Acuris. “I’ve loved writing about big shareholders for Acuris, but I really enjoy digging in to Chicago news,” Kapos said. “Writing the Illinois Playbook is a dream come true. http://dailytorch.com/2018/06/did-an-obama-executive-order-force-the-government-to-hire-unqualified-applicants/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Employees should be hired based on their ability to complete the tasks they have been assigned and nothing else. Yet under the Obama administration, hiring practices for the federal government were moved away from merit to fulfill goals irrelevant to the positions. Policies intended to simplify the federal government application process had the consequence of increasing politicization in the federal workforce and overburdening human resource offices. In May 2010, former President Barack Obama issued a memorandum on Improving the Federal Recruitment and Hiring Process. This memorandum directed agencies to simplify their application process to “eliminate any requirement that applicants respond to essay-style questions” and allowed individuals to submit resumes and cover letters or complete “simple, plain language” instead. The result was a flood of new applications. According to Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning, the goal was not just to increase hiring in the federal government but to increase political hiring. Manning notes, “The 2010 memorandum was always intended to give Obama supporters an easier path to enter the civil service. By overwhelming human resource departments with applications, it accomplished just that.” This was the first of several presidential orders to reshape the federal workforce.)

I did. In 1970, when I was 21 years old, after I earned a bachelor’s degree in management from NIU, I accepted the only job offer that I got – working for the Firestone Store in Chicago Heights. I was draft bait. Potential employers did not believe that my application for a financial hardship would be granted. Further, employers were under tremendous pressure to hire minorities, females, and veterans. 7 months later, after my application had been approved, my Firestone boss fired me when I told him that I had accepted a job offer from Oldsmobile. But Oldsmobile withdrew that job offer saying that it had just agreed to stop hiring Whites to settle an EEOC complaint. That directly resulted in my accepting a job offer from IRS. IRS offered me the job because it could not find a qualified Democrat, minority, female, or veteran who would take it.)

http://www.robertfeder.com/2018/06/13/robservations-sun-times-ceo-eisendrath-fires-back-critics/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Sun-Times CEO Edwin Eisendrath is responding to critics who’ve questioned whether the paper can cover politics and City Hall fairly under its current ownership. Foremost among them is Chicago Tribune columnist John Kass, who challenged the connection between Sun-Times chairman Jorge Ramirez and his boss, investment executive Michael Sacks, whom Kass described as Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s “money guy, closest confidant and top fundraiser.” This week Eisendrath fired back: “The truth is the journalists do their job, and they’re not being bossed around by anyone on our board. That line is held, and it’s been clear. I don’t see any evidence that anybody is walking around me and talking to the reporters and trying to push them to do anything,” he told me. “The same way I’m able to say — in spite of clear evidence that the Tribune has a corporate point of view and a political point of view — I’m able to give credit to the journalists for the work they do. And I would expect Kass to do the same thing. . . . It’s fair to go after corporate citizenship. You bet it is. But that’s a different case. That’s not what he did. He said the reporters are going to get their marching orders from City Hall. Shame on him. He knows better.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: “Tonight, I ask you to please consider protecting your constituents and the voters and the taxpayers of Sangamon County,” said Springfield resident Rosanna Pulido. “Please pass a resolution to make Sangamon County a sanctuary for gun owners.” Other Illinois counties, including nearby Christian County, have adopted gun sanctuary resolutions. The terminology comes from so-called sanctuary cities, such as Chicago, that don’t cooperate with aspects of federal immigration enforcement. Speaking before the meeting, Sangamon County Administrator Brian McFadden said the county has an informal policy that it does not weigh in on symbolic measures that are outside its regulatory authority. Even if the county were to pass a gun sanctuary resolution, it would not affect the enforcement of federal, state or local gun laws. . .“This is not a symbolic resolution. It is a defense of the Constitutional principle. It is incumbent on our local elected officials to make sure their constituents’ voices are heard by the state in regards to protecting the Constitution. You took an oath of office to that effect,” Pulido said. Pulido, as well as Springfield residents Tom Shafer and Lynn Wilson, spoke at the end of the county board meeting. Board members did not comment or ask them any questions.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Harris said the auditor’s position by statute can be filled by anybody off the street, and the county wants more experience. “I’m not saying we’ve got bad people, but we want more stability in the job,” said Harris. “We want to know that we have an accounting professional in the job. “We know some of our audits haven’t been completed. The main job is compliance, and some audits just haven’t been completed over the years. It’s not against the person that’s on the job, it’s the knowledge to do the audit. We can’t guarantee consistent qualifications in the job through the process that we have. We would like to bring in talent that can do it, can see it. Anybody can come on the job and learn it, but we want our auditor to have a CIA, Certified Internal Auditor.” The county is not seeking professionals in other elected posts. Hranka said under statute, the sheriff, coroner and others are not required to have experience in the field pertaining to the position they are running for. She said the board allows her only $2,000 for continuing education even though she is required to do 20 hours per year.)

http://www.telegraphherald.com/ap/national/article_2a180d26-6abd-5e63-801b-595d374b1ec0.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Lamanta Reese lived much of his gang life in virtual reality, posting videos on YouTube of him and others taunting rivals. He died at age 19 in the real world, bleeding from his head onto a porch on Chicago’s South Side after one of those gang rivals, prosecutors say, shot him 11 times. Another possible factor in his slaying: A smiley-face emoji Reese posted that the suspected gunman may have interpreted as a slight about his mom. Gangs’ embrace of social media to goad foes or conceal drug dealing in emoji-laden text is the biggest change in how gangs operate compared with 10 years ago, according to new law enforcement data provided exclusively to The Associated Press ahead of its release Tuesday by the Chicago Crime Commission. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other sites have radically altered gang culture in Chicago. They are having a similar influence on gangs nationwide. These days, there is nearly always a link between an outbreak of gang violence and something online, said Rodney Phillips, a gang-conflict mediator working in the low-income Englewood neighborhood where Reese lived and died. When he learns simmering tensions have spilled into violence, he no longer goes first to the streets. “I Google it,” Phillips said. “I look on YouTube and Facebook. Today, that’s how you follow the trail of a conflict.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Pritzker campaign wasted no time hanging President Donald Trump around Gov. Bruce Rauner’s neck on Tuesday, just hours after the governor made a rare positive statement about the Trump White House. He did it, of course, without saying the president’s name. “I am very proud of what’s been going on in the federal government, Congress, and the White House,” Rauner said at a Downstate stop. Rauner is well aware that if he hopes to have any chance in November, he needs to reach out to the Republican base in southern Illinois, which is solid Trump country. Look no further than Rep. Mark Sanford’s loss last night, after Trump tweeted support for Sanford’s opponent, state Rep. Katie Arrington, as evidence of what can happen to Republicans who dump on Trump.)

Overwhelmingly, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have little or no professional work experience. Have you gotten pay increases? While I worked for the federal government 1966-1969 and 1971-1997, because of COLAs, step increases, and promotions, my pay increased every year except 1980 when I took a $19,203 (26%) pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO. DAILY SIGNAL
— Trump Executive Orders Are Surprisingly Popular With Federal Employees – John York (DIERSEN: The Democrats who run the federal government use Affirmative Action, Diversity, and Inclusion to get rid of their employees who are Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran. My Democrat superiors in the federal government acted like their employees who were Democrat, minority, female, younger, and/or veteran wanted them to get rid of their employees who were Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran. Assessing job performance is extremely subjective. The Democrats who run the federal government use that subjectivity to get rid of federal employee who are Republican, White, male, and/or non-veteran who they did not promote to GS-13 (currently $96,403) by age 25, GS-14 (currently $113,920) by age 30, GS-15 (currently $134,000) by age 35, and Senior Executive Service (currently $164,200) by age 40.)
https://www.dailysignal.com/2018/06/12/trump-executive-orders-are-surprisingly-popular-with-federal-employees/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: When President Donald Trump recently issued three executive orders that made it easier to fire poorly performing government employees, the backlash from public-sector unions was fierce. Union leaders did not like it—one called it an “assault on federal employees.” But a recent poll shows a slight majority of government workers—51 percent—supports the administration’s efforts. Moreover, only 24 percent of federal employees oppose the recent executive orders and another quarter are unsure. The level of support among federal workers for executive orders that will make it easier to fire them is surprising, but only at first glance. In fact, Trump’s executive orders represent modest reforms that will not affect the vast majority of employees and, in fact, likely will improve their working conditions. For instance, one of the new executive orders imposes a 30-day limit on the time an agency can give an employee to improve his poor performance before being fired. When a federal manager determines that an employee is not up to the job, he must present that employee with a performance improvement plan as a last-ditch effort to turn his performance around. Prior to the president’s executive order, agencies set the length of this grace period, which stretched to 120 days in some cases. The new executive order also gives managers more freedom to decide how to punish misconduct. Prior to Trump’s executive orders, managers were ordinarily bound to progress through lesser disciplinary steps from verbal warning and written notices to suspensions, demotions, and removal from the civil service. Now, managers are free to choose a punishment that fits the crime. Some federal employees no doubt take advantage of their insulation from accountability, but most civil servants are hard-working and dedicated—a fact attested to by the 70 percent customer satisfaction rate among those who receive some federal service. These diligent workers must pick up the slack for those who do not do their share, then are sometimes denied opportunities for advancement by the dead weight above them. And, as anyone who has worked in an office environment knows, unmotivated and unruly co-workers can take a heavy toll on morale. So, although a few bad apples may prefer to keep the status quo, it is not surprising most federal employees welcome these provisions of the president’s executive orders.)

https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/personalfinance/retirement/2018/06/12/these-retirement-cuts-threaten-millions-of-workers/35914843/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: There’s a lot of debate about the differences in working conditions that public-sector and private-sector workers face. Some private-sector workers who have seen many of their employee benefits deteriorate or disappear entirely over the years believe their public-sector counterparts get benefit packages that are too expensive for taxpayers to maintain. Public-sector employees can point to base salaries that have historically often been lower than what they could make in the private sector as a justification for additional benefits to make up the difference.)

https://communityjournal.net/3-surprises-to-watch-out-for-when-paying-for-long-term-care/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: More than 70 percent of Americans over the age of 65 will need long-term health care services, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Yet, according to the Employee Benefit Research Institute, only 13 percent of those who received professional home health care had long-term insurance policies, which can protect seniors from high out-of-pocket costs. “There is a wide gap of people without long-term care insurance (LTCI), and some of the alternatives carry little-known laws and legal liabilities that can pose a problem to the care recipient and their family, says CHRIS ORESTIS, Executive Vice President of GWG Life (www.gwglife.com ) and author of the books Help on the Way and A Survival Guide to Aging. “The growing long-term care funding crisis has brought lawsuits and mandated claw-back actions against families in attempts to recover monies spent on long-term care,” Orestis says. “There is a growing need for consumers to consider all their available financial options to fund long-term care, and that can include selling a life insurance policy.” “Often the weight for long-term care falls on the family, and they need to avoid a financial surprise that can come late in life for their loved ones.”)

My Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, got rid of my mentor in 1975, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974. http://www.breitbart.com/2018-elections/2018/06/10/generic-poll-gap-widens-as-gop-donors-ryan-push-amnesty/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The GOP’s deficit in the generic-ballot poll score has spiked from just 3.2 points to 7.6 points in the last week as business donors and House Speaker Paul Ryan push for a wage-cutting amnesty. The new polls show all of the GOP’s gradual gains since mid-March were suddenly wiped out starting June 1, when the Democrats held a mere 3.2 point advantage in the generic ballot, which records voters’ partisan preference. One week late, on June 8, the gap had jumped to 7.6 percent as the establishment media extensively and favorably covered the discharge-petition push and Ryan’s June 6 public support for an amnesty.)

http://thehill.com/homenews/state-watch/391687-nj-gop-house-candidate-calls-diversity-a-bunch-of-crap
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In the video, Grossman calls diversity an “un-American” concept, implies that the country was better off before affirmative action and says black Americans would benefit from stronger immigration enforcement. “The whole idea of diversity is a bunch of crap and un-American,” Grossman says. Diversity, he says, is “an excuse by Democrats, communists and socialists, basically, to say that we’re not all created equal, that if some people or somebody is less qualified, they will get a job anyway or they’ll get into college anyway because of what group or what box they fit into.” “Once we say that Republicans want these traditional ways that made America great for all these years, then maybe African-Americans will realize if we enforce our immigration laws, they’ll be more opportunities for Americans of all backgrounds,” he adds. “When we talk about women saying ‘Well we need special care for child care, we need this credit and that credit.’ I say, wait a minute, when America was great, one parent alone earned more than enough money to comfortably support a family.” On Monday, Grossman, a noted supporter of President Trump, told Philly.com that he stands by his comments. He also contended that American Bridge PAC is trying to brand Trump-aligned Republicans as “radical and unacceptable.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The two events in Washington could lead to further consolidation of wireless, cable and content giants, public-interest advocates say. And they fear that behemoths like AT&T might someday prioritize their own TV shows and other content over rivals’. Internet service providers, or ISPs, deny that they would engage in such a practice — yet consumer watchdogs worry that consumers would have little legal recourse if they did. “I think this could be a one-two punch to consumers and online competition,” said Gene Kimmelman, the president of Public Knowledge, a Washington, D.C.-based public interest group. “The combination of no net neutrality and video consolidation creates new bottlenecks that empower the traditional media industry to raise prices and limit online competition.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Mr. Trump, a former reality television star, may soon be working with a thinned-out cast in the middle of Season 2, well before the midterm elections. Several high-profile aides, including John F. Kelly, the president’s chief of staff, and Joe Hagin, a deputy of Mr. Kelly’s, are said to be thinking about how much longer they can stay. Last week, Mr. Kelly told visiting senators that the White House was “a miserable place to work,” according to a person with direct knowledge of the comment. The turnover, which is expected to become an exodus after the November elections, does not worry the president, several people close to him said. He has grown comfortable with removing any barriers that might challenge him — including, in some cases, people who have the wrong chemistry or too frequently say no to him.)

— What to Consider Before You Change Your Residence Because of the New Tax Law Limits on deductions for state and local taxes have created a greater incentive for taxpayers living in high-tax states – Tom Herman (DIERSEN: Roskam should increase the $10,000 SALT cap to $20,000 for married filing jointly.)
https://www.wsj.com/articles/what-to-consider-before-you-change-your-residence-because-of-the-new-tax-law-1528682701
(FROM THE ARTICLE: For some people, saving taxes under the new law could be a moving experience. Among the biggest changes is a provision limiting deductions for state and local taxes to $10,000 a year ($5,000 for a married person filing a separate return), starting this year and scheduled to expire at the end of 2025. Also, the standard deduction amounts rose sharply. These changes have created a greater incentive for many taxpayers living in high-tax areas, including New York City, California, New Jersey and Connecticut, to consider becoming tax refugees. This includes upper-income taxpayers who have more than one home and want to claim a home in a lower-tax area as the one that counts for tax purposes. It also includes some taxpayers who are considering fleeing entirely from a high-tax area.)

— Rauner trails Pritzker in latest poll – SARAH HAYDEN (DIERSEN: What has Rauner done so far to encourage those who voted for Trump and/or for Ives to help reelect him on November 6, 2018? For example, has he offered to sign a pledge that he will not take any action against Illinois Republican Party (IRP) platform? For example, has he offered to attend a summit meeting with those who endorsed Trump, those who endorsed Ives, and the conservative leaders in Illinois? What does Rauner say to those who increasingly conclude that he does NOT want those who voted for Trump and/or for Ives to help reelect him on November 6, 2018? (FROM THE ARTICLE: Gov. Bruce Rauner is trailing Democratic gubernatorial rival J.B. Pritzker by at least 15 points, according to the May edition of The Illinois Poll. The telephone survey contacted 1,208 voters May 22-24. While Rauner holds narrow leads in northern and central Illinois, he has surged in the southern part of the state, with a 46-to-30 percent lead over Pritzker. Predictably, Pritzker is leading Rauner 76 to 11 percent in Democratic Chicago and suburban Cook County. The poll also asked residents whether they believe Rauner deserves to be re-elected to a second term in office. Thirty four percent of respondents said yes, while 53 percent said no.)

https://www.theday.com/article/20180610/OP04/180619985

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Pew Research Center is out with a fascinating poll on “news fatigue.” The poll finds: “Almost seven-in-ten Americans (68%) feel worn out by the amount of news there is these days, compared with only three-in-ten who say they like the amount of news they get,” according to the report. “The portion expressing feelings of information overload is in line with how Americans felt during the 2016 presidential election, when a majority expressed feelings of exhaustion from election coverage.” On one hand, this is understandable given the constant drumbeat of scandal and outrage. On the other hand, no one forces Americans to watch or read the news. It is a choice whether to consume it or not, and judging from those stunning poll results (e.g. only 43 percent polled last year could name a single Supreme Court justice), many people do a fine job of being uninformed. Nevertheless, to the degree one attempts to be a diligent citizen, it seems to many that they are drinking out of the proverbial firehose. Looking a little closer, we see an interesting phenomenon. Distaste for President Donald Trump — and perhaps glee at his failures — makes Democrats more eager to ingest as much news as they can. “While majorities of both Republicans and Democrats express news fatigue, Republicans are feeling it more,” according the Pew’s findings. “Roughly three-quarters (77%) of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents feel worn out over how much news there is, compared with about six-in-ten Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents (61%). This elevated fatigue among Republicans tracks with them having less enthusiasm than Democrats for the 2018 elections. The lack of interest in the news and in the election suggests that an outsize segment of Republicans don’t want to hear that much about, or take stock of, the president and Congress they elected. Yes, we can sympathize that it is stressful to see someone you were warned not to vote for display just about every rotten trait you chose to overlook during the campaign (e.g. dishonesty, vulgarity, racism). Ironically, the less-informed people feel the most overwhelmed, even if they don’t actually consume a whole lot of news. (“While a majority of those who follow the news most of the time (62%) are feeling worn out by the news, a substantially higher portion (78%) of those who less frequently get news say they are fatigued by the amount of it that they see.”) There may be a strong segment of the electorate that is trying to hide from the news — but just can’t. The demographic groups that most strongly supported Trump are now the most exhausted by the news. “Some demographic groups — most notably white Americans — are more likely than others to feel exhausted by the news,” the poll finds. “Nearly three-quarters (73%) of white Americans express fatigue with the amount of news, much higher than among both Hispanic (55%) and black Americans (55%). Women are also somewhat more likely than men to feel worn out (71% vs. 64%, respectively).” There is some good news in this for the anti-Trump forces. It seems they are more energized (perhaps by a sense of vindication or by a desire to stop the Trump madness) than Republicans, who, gosh, just don’t seem to want to be reminded of what and whom they voted for. They are not “tired of winning.”)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-met-cook-county-video-gambling-20180606-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: “This is an opportunity for us to bring in revenue from people who want to pay the revenue, not by forcing something on somebody,” Commissioner Tim Schneider, a Bartlett Republican, said during a meeting Tuesday where officials discussed the plan. When video gambling machines went live in Illinois during fall 2012, Cook County prohibited them from unincorporated areas. Under state law, each establishment authorized to operate video gambling is allowed up to five machines. Schneider, who proposed the expansion plan in unincorporated Cook County said the measure would allow businesses with a liquor license to apply for video gambling. There are approximately 60 businesses with liquor licenses in unincorporated Cook, Schneider said. Ninety out of 132 municipalities in the county have allowed video gambling, Schneider said, arguing that the expansion will allow business in unincorporated Cook County to compete with them and “level the playing field.” Currently, electronic gambling devices in Cook County are taxed $1,000 per machine and $200 per year per terminal, according to Edward Nelson, a spokesman for the county’s finance bureau. Gambling revenue from incorporated areas of Cook County is expected to bring in $2.1 million this fiscal year, which is an increase from the year before, Nelson said in an email. There was little debate over the measure inside the county building Wednesday, though commissioner Bridget Gainer, D-Chicago, voted no, saying gambling can “create an undue burden on families.” Schneider said video gambling is “carefully regulated.” Officials from municipalities that have adopted video gambling reported “limited or no problems,” he said. Commissioners voted 9-1 in favor of the plan, with three voting present. Anita Bedell, executive director of the Illinois Church Action on Alcohol and Addiction Problems, called the expansion a “very bad idea.” “More people will gamble,” Bedell said, and it will lead to increased social costs, including addiction and divorce. “The money comes from residents that lose the money,” Bedell said. Sean Morrison, R-Palos Park, echoed Schneider’s points about creating a “level playing field” for business. He said this will generate new revenue without being a “mandated tax.” “You gamble if you choose or you don’t,” he said.)

Those candidates include Peter Roskam, Bruce Rauner and Evelyn Sanguinetti, Erika Harold, Jason Helland, Darlene Senger, Jim Dodge, Mike Connelly, Chris Nybo, Amy Grant, Peter Breen, Darlene Ruscitti, Dan Cronin, James Mendrick, Paul Hinds, Gwen Henry, Grant Eckhoff, Chris Zaruba, Kevin Wiley, Jim Zay, Al Murphy, Joseph Cantore, Karen Wilson, and Jeff Mackay. SEE: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/july-2018-independence-day-celebration-parade-entry-tickets-43661232923?aff=es2 This year again, for the 13th year in a row, DuPage Republicans will help sponsor the parade and the fireworks the evening before. So far, outstandingly, Illinois Republican Party leader and Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar has contributed $500 toward the $2,500 sponsorship pledge. DuPage County Republicans will get credit for sponsoring the Tunes of Glory bagpipers and the Wheaton North and South High School bands. DuPage Republicans will again have a booth at the fireworks the evening before the parade. I will again hand deliver a flyer to all the residences and businesses on the parade route that lists the sponsors and the amount that they contributed. Please urge the candidates to phone me at 630-653-0462 about sponsorship and mail a check made out to the Wheaton Park District for $100 or more to me at 915 Cove Court, Wheaton, Illinois 60189-6326. GOPUSA ILLINOIS
— JULY 4, 2017 EVENING EDITION FLASHBACK: Republicans who participated in Wheaton’s outstanding Independence Day Parade this morning were: DuPage State’s Attorney Bob Berlin; DuPage County District 4 officials Grant Eckhoff, Tim Elliott, Amy Grant, and Tim Whelan; James Mendrick for DuPage Sheriff; Frank Bibbianno for DuPage Sheriff; Karen Wilson for DuPage Judge; and the Milton Township Republican Central Committee (MTRCC). Republicans who walked with entries included Ron Almiron, Lori Carlson, Joseph Caruso, Flo Dangelo, Sal Falbo, Chris Heidorn, Pat Hinchey, Marty Keller, Larry LaVanway, Antonio Lollino, Paula McGowen, Ron Menna, David Norck, Thommen Poozhikunnel, Mary Rash, Pat Ryan, and Janet Shaw. Gary Muehlfelt drove the truck that pulled the outstanding MTRCC float. Peter Breen, Mike Connelly, and Jeanne Ives could not participate in the parade because of the Democrats. Peter Roskam participated in a different parade. This year, for the 12th year in a row, “DuPage Republicans” helped sponsor the parade and fireworks. “DuPage Republicans” was the $2,500 “Star” sponsor again sponsored the Wheaton high school bands and the Tunes of Glory Pipes and Drums parade entries. Because of a last minute shortage of banner carriers, I had the honor of helping carry the “Sponsored by DuPage Republicans” banner ahead of the Tunes of Glory Pipes and Drums. Outstandingly, again this year Tim Whelan coordinated Republican use of the “DuPage Republicans” booth at the fireworks. This year again, I delivered flyers to the residences and businesses on the parade route. The flyers listed the Republican entries in the parade and the Republicans who helped sponsor entries. Outstandingly, the flyers were printed courtesy of Alpha Graphics. This year, outstandingly, Roger Claar is a $500 contributor, Chris Nybo is a $250 contributor, Phil Suess is a $150 contributor, and Bob Berlin, Peter Breen, Mike Connelly, Grant Eckhoff, Tim Elliott, Amy Grant, Gwen Henry, Paul Hinds, Jeanne Ives, Marty Keller, Deanne Mazzochi, Paula McGowen, James Mendrick, Peter Roskam, Darlene Ruscitti, and Tim Whelan are $100 contributors. Please thank them for helping sponsor the parade and fireworks. This year was the 10th anniversary of an elephant walking behind Roskam in the parade. For that 2007 parade, I had the honor of raising $2,000 on short notice from DuPage Republicans to sponsor that elephant. – Dave Diersen

— Does Rauner Support Trump Commuting Blagojevich’s 14-Year Sentence? – BRIAN MACKEY (DIERSEN: Does Rauner support Trump commuting my sentence? Being forced to take early retirement is a major adverse employment action. If you have been forced to take early retirement, you know how devastating it is. Constructively, since 1997, when I was 49 years old, the Democrats who run GAO have had the Civil Service Retirement System pay me $1,076,178 in today’s dollars to not come to work. Prior to that, they gave me unfair performance expectations and appraisals, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, got rid of my mentor in 1987, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take an $19,203 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980.)

— Illinois Republican Party State Central Committee member Charlene Foss-Eggemann says grassroots involvement is key to November gubernatorial win – Robert Hadley (DIERSEN: Tragically, from what I see, the Illinois Republican Party (IRP) is divided between “Group A” individuals, organizations, and companies that want to dump voters who support the traditional family, right to life, immigration, and many other planks in the IRP platform and Group B individuals, organizations, and companies who support the IRP platform. Those in Group A voted for Rauner and those in Group B voted for Ives.)
https://northcooknews.com/stories/511445366-gop-committee-member-says-grassroots-involvement-is-key-to-november-gubernatorial-win
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Elected to represent Illinois’ Ninth Congressional District, Foss-Eggemann is positioning herself as a grassroots volunteer who is intent on providing a conservative voice from her district at the state level. “I will work to unify the Republican Party before we head into another tough gubernatorial election cycle,” she told the North Cook News. “I will also work toward facilitating the development of party volunteers, protecting the conservative planks of the party platform, bolstering our statewide fundraising efforts and improving the quality of our voter data.” But if she is sounding a somewhat conciliatory note, it may be because the party seems to have divided loyalties. Rauner, who won the primary by a scant 22,000-vote margin, faced opposition stirred up from “grassroots anger over [his] more liberal positions,” according to a May 19 piece in the State Journal-Register. However, that same report said that Tim Schneider, a member of Rauner’s camp, had won another term as chairman of the Illinois GOP, an indication that the party’s cracks—if there were any—are healing. “It’s important to note, however, that robust competition and debate is a cornerstone of our party’s principles,” Foss-Eggemann stated. “So I would not characterize a race as ‘division.’” But with a tough battle against Pritzker ahead, Foss-Eggemann is realistic about what it may take to keep the governor’s office in the GOP column. “We need to run with the opportunity and make the most of what we have,” she said. “We must all raise our game to make everyone feel welcome and do even more to engage and train grassroots volunteers. If we do these things, we win.”)

My age cohort was in school during the 1940s. Baby boomers approaching their 70s were in school during the 1950s and early ’60s. Try this question to any one of those 50 million Americans who are 65 or older: Do you recall any discussions about the need to hire armed guards to protect students and teachers against school shootings? Do you remember school policemen patrolling the hallways? How many students were shot to death during the time you were in school? For me and those other Americans 65 or older, when we were in school, a conversation about hiring armed guards and having police patrol hallways would have been seen as lunacy. There was no reason.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: For graduates of MIT Sloan School of Management, median starting salaries paid by financial-services firms jumped 25% between 2012 and 2017 to $125,000. Technology and consulting median salaries were up just 9%, to $125,000 at technology companies and $147,000 at consulting firms, over the same period. Still, the share of Sloan graduates accepting jobs at financial-services firms was cut almost in half to 14% over that time, while technology’s share nearly doubled to 32%. She said one factor cited by students is a workweek of 90 to 100 hours that can be typical in the banking industry. “You can have a lucrative career without those lifestyle costs,” Ms. Schulte said.)
— Universities Devise Rules for Professors Accused of Sexual Harassment Tenured faculty facing complaints can be told to keep their office doors open, meet students in public and steer clear of female colleagues – Melissa Korn (DIERSEN: I stress that despite their tremendous efforts, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have never succeeded in getting anyone to accuse me of sexual harassment. I am a prime target for sexual harassment complaints because of my demographics. I am a Trump supporter, Protestant (baptized, raised, and confirmed as a Missouri Synod Lutheran), conservative, patriotic, Republican, American, White, male, old (born in 1949), non-poor, gun owner, 100% German Americans, draft avoider, and my ancestors have been in America since 1844.)

IRS hired me in 1971 because it could not find a qualified Democrat, minority, female, or veteran who would take the job. SACRAMENTO BEE
— Who is John Cox? Trump-backed Republican faces Newsom in California’s governor race – ALEXEI KOSEFF (DIERSEN: Trump endorsed John Cox. Cox and I served together on the Illinois Center Right Coalition Steering Committee. On July 5, 2003, Cox came with the other four announced candidates for U.S. Senate (Chirinjeev Kathuria, Andy McKenna, Jim Oberweis, and Jack Ryan) to a picnic that I arranged in the Prairie Path Park in my precinct for voters in my precinct, in Jeanne Ive’s precinct to the east, and in Debra Olson’s precinct to the west. The 200 attendees included Randy Hultgren. We can forever ask ourselves, “What if Trump had endorsed Ives?”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Cox has a long history of failed political campaigns: He ran for a suburban Chicago House seat in 2000 and the U.S. Senate in 2002 and 2004, but never made it out of the primary. He lost a 2004 race for Cook County Record of Deeds and the Illinois Republican Party chairmanship in 2005. The following year, he announced his candidacy for president, but dropped out early. Since moving to California in 2011, Cox has reinvented himself as a crusader against what he considers the legal “corruption” of money’s influence on the political process.)

FED WEEK
— Timeline Uncertain on Changing Disciplinary Policies (DIERSEN: What disciplinary actions have been taken against you? My Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, gave me unfair performance expectations and appraisals, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, got rid of my mentor in 1987, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take an $19,203 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980. My Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, got rid of my mentor in 1975, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974. My Democrat Post Office superiors forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests in 1969 and 1968.)

— 8 Effective Ways to Drive Traffic to Your Website (DIERSEN: I should write a book about individuals, about organizations, about companies, about governments, and about countries that do not want me to drive traffic to their websites. They blame me and my GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails for their problems, for your problems, for my problems, and for everyone’s problems. They blame me and my GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails for all the defeats that Republicans have suffered in Illinois since 2000. Many of the aforesaid blamers state that they are religious, conservative, and/or Republican.)
