(FROM THE ARTICLE: Some 15 million people in the U.S. receive disability payments. In some of the 136 counties with the highest rates of disability use across the country, almost all of them rural with a white majority, more than 1 in 6 working-age adults receive federal disability payments. Once on disability, as the Washington Post points out, recipients rarely get off the program. By and large, these are not individuals who fell off a roof and broke their back or lost limbs in an industrial accident. They suffer from back pain or diabetes or emphysema or liver cirrhosis or some other lifestyle-induced ailment. But, perhaps more importantly, they live in communities where job opportunities are few, especially for those who don’t have a college education. But disability programs are just a fraction of the government’s assistance programs. A 2015 study by the U.S. Census Bureau showed that 52.2 million people, or roughly 1 in 5 Americans, received help in 2012 from one of six means-tested programs. And, of course, this doesn’t count Social Security or Medicare, which pays out to individuals on average far more over their lifetimes than they contributed in taxes.)

Factors for 915 Cove Court in Wheaton include the subdivision being built in a watershed area and a former septic field, the tremendous amount of surface and subsurface storm water that flows onto the lot during and after heavy rains, the inadequate number of storm sewer inlets in the subdivision, the disruption, obstruction, and improper connection of 6″ and 4″ subterranean drainage lines when the home was built, the pouring the foundation walls on cracked footings, the improper installation and intentional blockage of exterior foundation footing tiles, the installation of only one sump pump when there should have been two or even three or even four, the many long and wide cracks in the basement floor, and the fact that all the storm water that gets into the storm sewer system on the lot is limited to the capacity of one 4″ pipe.  What factors decrease the likelihood of your basement flooding?  For 915 Cove Court, they include the installation of steel reinforcement rods in foundation walls, the installation of interior footing tiles, my paying $900 when the home was built in 1984 to have all nine of the home’s downspouts directly connected to Wheaton’s storm sewer system, my installing a backup sump pump, my unobstructed and properly connecting the aforesaid subterranean drainage lines to Wheaton’s storm sewer system, my paying for unobstruction (the removal of stones) from some of the exterior footing tiles, my adding hundreds of feet of French drains and many storm sewer inlets on the lot and connecting them directly to Wheaton’s storm sewer system, my properly sealing the many long and wide cracks in the basement floor, my paying for conversion to an overhead sewer system before the basement was finished in 2005, and my paying for a 20-W whole house natural gas backup electric generator for the home.  Since 1984, because of Wheaton’s failure/refusal to assure that building codes were enforced when the subdivision was constructed and 915 Cove Court was built, I have been forced to spend many thousands of dollars and many hundreds of hours of my labor to stop basement flooding.)

Rodney Davis was asked whether members of Congress should get their health care coverage under the Affordable Care Act. We do, he said. And he pays more for it than he did under a previous program, with a higher deductible and a higher out-of-pocket maximum cost. “I’m part of the only group that has to, by law, has to get their benefits through the Affordable Care Act for health care,” Davis said. “I actually follow more stringent requirements than the Obama White House did. The Obama White House didn’t have to get their health benefits through the Affordable Care Act exchange like members of Congress and members of the Senate do. They were able to join millions of federal employees through the federal employee health benefit program.” Davis didn’t say it, but the reason for the disparity is that’s the way Congress wrote the law. “For a long period of time,” said Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, “it seemed to me that members of Congress needed to be subject to the laws they pass for the rest of the country.” Davis didn’t sound pleased about his enrollment under the ACA. “We don’t get any special benefits. We do have to follow the health care benefits of the Affordable Care Act where every other federal employee does not,” he said. Members of Congress are enrolled under the ACA’s gold tier plan offered by the DC Health Link. According to the Congressional Research Service, the average employer contribution — which comes from taxpayers — is 72 percent. The truth is Jefferson could use some work.  But, like many of our homes we need to prioritize and sometimes things must wait until we’ve paid off the debt that we’ve already run up.  With what the district spent on Hubble, had they built a Hubble more in line with the other 3 middle schools, they could have built a new Jefferson at the same time for the same money.)

(FROM THE LETTER:  Do state Sen. Heather Steans and state Rep. Kelly Cassidy have no shame? The thought of legalizing marijuana for the purpose of raising revenue from the manufacture and sale of marijuana is yet one more example of stealing from the futures of our children to pay for lawmakers’ pet projects today. I have two children in high school and one in middle school. They are good kids, get good grades, and are active in scouts and the community. I hear stories from them of what some of the other students are up to at Downers Grove North. I read about the heroin epidemic and grieve for the families that have recently lost children. My children tell me they just say no, and I believe them. But I also know what I was up to when I was in high school, and there but by the grace of God go I. I know that Illinois has a budget problem and have been told by Democrats for many years that there is literally nowhere to cut. I have also seen with my own eyes much of the graft in city and state contracting. The Democrats’ positioning is that there are no options but to raise taxes. These lawmakers want to raise taxes through drug use, and I find that despicable. For whatever reason, there has been no grand bargain on expanded gambling for expanded revenue, and that’s got to hurt. Prostitution is still illegal in Illinois, however not rare. My heart goes out to the young ladies and their families whose revenue potentials will be eyed next. Democratic leadership has already spent more money for today than our kids and grandkids could possibly pay back in their lifetimes, so that must make the politicians proud. Their idea of promoting and taxing drug use is a good one to keep money flowing in, but bodes poorly for future generations. By the time the bill comes due these two legislators will be living on their fat, taxpayer-provided pensions, so what do they care? What if there are no public taxpayers left in Illinois to pay it? Steans and Cassidy must think carefully about what they’re doing. And in the meantime, try not to string out the kids for their comfort.)

A bill pending in the Legislature would allow pot growers and retailers to reclassify their recreational pot as medical pot if a change in federal law or enforcement occurs. It’s the boldest attempt yet by a U.S. marijuana state to avoid federal intervention in its weed market. The bill would allow Colorado’s 500 or so licensed recreational pot growers to instantly reclassify their weed. A switch would cost the state more than $100 million a year because Colorado taxes medical pot much more lightly than recreational weed – 2.9 percent versus 17.9 percent. The measure says licensed growers could immediately become medical licensees “based on a business need due to a change in local, state or federal law or enforcement policy.” The change wouldn’t take recreational marijuana off the books, but it wouldn’t entirely safeguard it either. What it could do is help growers protect their inventory in case federal authorities start seizing recreational pot. The provision is getting a lot of attention in the marijuana industry following recent comments from members of President Donald Trump’s administration. White House spokesman Sean Spicer has said there’s a “big difference” between medical and recreational pot. Sponsors of the bill call it a possible exit strategy for the new pot industry. The belief that executive branch staffers are insufficiently loyal to Trump and are secretly working to promote the policies of President Barack Obama has inspired a wave of attack articles from right-wing sites like Breitbart and the Conservative Review, according to Politico. Breitbart has even published a list of so-called “Obama loyalist bureaucrats” that it urged Trump to “either fire immediately or remove from their current positions.” Breitbart’s former CEO, Steve Bannon, is currently Trump’s chief strategist.)
