The U of M College Republicans group painted a mural yesterday in the group’s designated spot along the Washington Avenue Bridge. Dozens of student groups paint murals along the inside walls of the pedestrian level of the bridge every fall. This group’s read in part “Build The Wall,” which refers to presidential candidate Donald Trump’s proposal to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. The sign was later vandalized with the words “Stop White Supremacy.” Multicultural groups who did not support the vandalism later gathered to protest what they called “anti-immigrant” hate speech. “There’s freedom of speech but then there’s hate speech. It’s one thing to be conservative and it’s another thing to be saying these things that are clearly xenophobic and targeting specific groups of people,” Guillermo Perez said. Perez is a member of Sigma Lambda Beta, a Latino-based multicultural fraternity that happens to have the panel next to the College Republicans. “I was really angry, angry because it’s an attack to my people because I am Mexican,” Perez said. The group responded using its own panel, which said, “Building bridges, not walls.” “We’re trying to seek, at the very least, an apology and recognition that what they did was wrong,” Perez said. U of M President Eric Kaler said while some may find the initial message offensive it is protected speech and should not have been vandalized. He released a statement saying: “During the annual ‘Paint the Bridge’ event, an opportunity for registered student groups and University departments to promote their groups by painting a panel on the Washington Avenue Bridge, one panel assigned to a student group has received attention. The panel includes the phrase from Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, ‘Build the wall.’ While this is protected as free, political speech, we have heard from members of our community who find the phrase hurtful, offensive, anti-immigrant, and anti-Latinx. “People in our community may disagree with the sentiment expressed. However, while the University values free speech, the subsequent vandalism of the panel is not the way to advance a conversation. “The University of Minnesota supports a campus climate that welcomes all members of our community and our values of equity and diversity, but that also ensures the free flow of ideas, even those that are offensive to some. As students and our community participate in responses to this and future issues, I urge all of us to be respectful and thoughtful in our approach. We encourage all who find some protected speech distasteful or offensive to engage in more protected speech.” The College Republicans also released a statement Saturday. “We find it highly disturbing that someone would vandalize a simple statement such as ‘build the wall’. “We have received comments on the painting, falsely accusing us of being racist, xenophobic, and anti-immigrant. Our party’s nominee supports building a wall on the Mexican border to stop the flow of illegal immigrants into this country. We understand that some students may disagree with this policy position. However, free speech is at the center of a functioning democracy, and the actions taken against our panels run contrary to free speech. It’s worth noting that numerous politicians from both parties support building a wall on the Mexican border. “President Obama, Vice-President Biden, Secretary Clinton, and Minnesota Governor Dayton have all supported building a wall on the Mexican border while they were U.S. Senators (Secure Fence Act of 2006). We look forward to students writing angry letters and reporting these Democrat politicians to the Bias Incident System for hurting their feelings as well. “Regardless of how one feels about border security or Mr. Donald J. Trump, it is never acceptable to infringe on other people’s freedom of speech. University policy clearly states, ‘Any alteration(s) to any panel by any person(s) outside of these designated time(s) is considered vandalism and subject to University Policy and/or local, state and federal laws.’ “We appreciate President Kaler’s statement of support for our freedom of speech and we expect the university to continue to uphold their commitment to freedom of speech and diversity of thought.”)

Sure, that’s a lot more than Vanguard’s data, but in terms of dependable retirement income, it’s only worth $347 to $493 per month in retirement income. The GAO found that 29% of households age 55 and over don’t have any defined benefit (such as a pension) or retirement savings at all.)

The county’s Finance Department showed the Finance and Budget Committee newly designed timesheets that will be required to report their hours if they plan to continue with the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund’s (IMRF) pension program. Under the law, newly elected part-time county board members will no longer qualify for taxpayer funded pensions while existing board members will still qualify but must document they worked the required 600 hours a year, according to a law initiated by state Rep. Jack D. Franks (D-Marengo). Rauner signed a bill outlining the changes into law late last month. Kane County board members also serve as commissioners on the Forest Preserve District of Kane County, however, it is a separate governing body that is not addressed in the new law, said John Hoscheit, chairman of the Finance and Budget Committee. The time sheet deals with county board work and must be kept by board members who want to continue participating in the IMRF pension program, he said.)

U.S. District Judge Sara Ellis ruled on Sept. 21 that the Chicago company will need to provide the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission with demographic information on both its workforce and the men and women logged in its job applicant database. The agency is investigating the company for racial discrimination in hiring. Groupon had been fighting an EEOC subpoena for the data, arguing that it was irrelevant, overly broad and burdensome. Ellis dismissed all three objections. “When investigating a charge of race discrimination, EEOC ‘is authorized to consider where the overall conditions in a workplace support’ the allegations,” Ellis wrote. Two-thirds of Groupon’s U.S. workforce is white, according to a company blog post. Court filings say the company has 1,900 employees in Chicago and received 25,000 job applications between Jan. 1, 2014 and the present. A spokesman for Groupon did not immediately return a request for comment. The agency is investigating a claim by Adrian Stratton, who filed a charge of racial discrimination in October 2014, after the company did not hire him for an open position as vice president of merchandising. But the successful pursuit of Groupon’s data makes the case “much more significant than just a single subpoena,” said Linda Friedman, a name partner at Stowell & Friedman in Chicago who represents plaintiffs in discrimination cases. Like Wall Street, racial minorities are underrepresented in the tech industry. The EEOC can use workforce and hiring data to analyze the racial makeup of a company’s workforce compared to the community in which it recruits. The greater the disparity, the greater the likelihood of discrimination. The agency is exercising its power to broadly investigate a company in the name of the public interest, rather than getting bogged down in the specifics of a single individual’s claim. “A lot of people feel the EEOC has been too quiet and too silent,” she said. “So it’s good to see it’s alive and breathing.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: How crazy is it that I ended up volunteering for perhaps the next president of the United States?  I mean you would have thought that by talking to Roger Claar the Mayor of Bolingbrook, I would volunteer at a Trump fundraiser! I can only say it was the best event that I have worked on in my early political life. Setting up tables was a challenge but greeting people by the door was amazing. Friendly faces, attitudes, familiar faces like (former State Senator) Kirk Dillard, (Bolingbrook Mayor) Roger Claar and (Chicago Cubs’ owner) Todd Ricketts.  I also had the pleasure of sitting next to (former New York City Mayor) Rudy Giuliani during the lunch. The speech that Trump delivered was electrifying. Reducing regulations, repealing Obamacare, and lowering taxes on the middle class. Straight to the point concise, was how his speech was, and everyone stood and applauded our future president of the United States. Unfortunately, there was a negative point, as I was called traitor and fake by Mexican protesters against Trump, yet I kept my smile and head straight up and continued to help Trump. After the event I traveled outside to see Trump supporters waving American flags and chanting “USA,USA,USA”. I got to talk to some of the Trump supporters and we discussed Trump at the first debate. Politico, citing anonymous sources, reports that the “encounter” with the woman was recorded and posted to Sandack’s social media accounts with several of his contacts tagged in the video. Sandack previously has said he was extorted via Facebook and Skype by a woman who lured him “to engage in inappropriate online conversations.” Once Republicans learned of the video and its surfacing, a top state operative urged Sandack to resign, Politico reports. Sandack issued a statement to Politico denying he was asked to resign but didn’t address questions about the existence of the video or whether it was distributed to others. Reached Friday morning, a Sandack spokesman told the Chicago Sun-Times that Sandack would have no further comment. Last week, Sandack said he was extorted by a woman who lured him “to engage in inappropriate online conversations.” His admission came after Downers Grove police released new details about the bizarre episode in 34 pages of reports that conclude they can’t seek criminal charges in the case because the apparent perpetrator or perpetrators live in the Philippines. The police reports — much of them redacted — paint a picture of a middle-aged man sucked into a scheme that began with him communicating with a young woman online and ended with him feeling compelled to send her money and seeing a fake Facebook account set up in his name. The Sun-Times and other news outlets have asked the Illinois attorney general’s office to review whether those redactions are legal under the state’s Freedom of Information Act. The attorney general’s office is reviewing those requests. Whether the fake Facebook account contained potentially embarrassing information is unclear. Large portions of the police documents remain redacted. Sandack wired money to the Philippines because he felt threatened, according to police, who classified the case as “extortion.” In his statement last week, Sandack — who became Rauner’s most vocal ally in the Illinois House — said the woman lured him in. “This past July, I was the target of an international crime ring focusing on high-profile individuals luring them to engage in inappropriate online conversations with the intent of extortion,” Sandack said then. “I took their bait and fell for it hook, line and sinker. “Poor decisions on my part enabled me to be a victim and, as a responsible citizen, I reported it and have been working with the police.” Sandack, 52, who as a state lawmaker was very active on social media, abruptly resigned from the Legislature on July 24.
