Most political watchers are waiting to see what Rep. Adam Kinzinger, Cubs co-owner and Republican National Committee finance Chairman Todd Ricketts, and Chicago attorney and Illinois Republican committeeman Richard Porter will do. State Rep. Darren Bailey of Xenia (in Clay County), and state Sen. Paul Schimpf of Waterloo (near St. Louis), have talked to people about running. Bailey, who makes a living as a farmer, has made headlines for a lawsuit against Pritzker, claiming his civil rights have been violated by the governor’s stay-at-home orders. Bailey is the state rep who was kicked out of the spring legislative session for a day for not wearing a mask. He’s also a freshman Rep who’s running for state senator. Talk about ambition. Schimpf, who’s not seeking re-election this year, saw his plans for a federal judgeship derailed. So he’s looking for something new after next month’s election. The attorney and retired Marine Corps officer has been a familiar face on the campaign circuit for other Republican candidates. He also has been speaking out against the graduated income tax ballot measure, which is backed by Pritzker. Gary Rabine, owner of a Rabine Group, a paving and concrete company based in Schaumburg, has hosted Trump events around Illinois, allowing him to get his name out with top-tier Republican supporters. Rabine, who headlines a podcast called Ditch Digger CEO, also has the ear of Charlie Kirk of Turning Point. Kinzinger, meanwhile, may be looking for a new challenge after nearly 10 years in the House — 12 if he wins re-election next month. He’s one of the few Republicans in Congress who hasn’t been afraid to call out President Donald Trump when he thinks the president’s tweets go too far. GOP sources say Kinzinger’s campaign team would like to see him run for governor, but he so far isn’t indicating whether he’s ready to make the leap. Other wildcards are Ricketts, whose family is on the Forbes billionaire list and is seen as someone who could match Pritzker’s ability to self-fund, and Porter, who’s become a notable name in GOP circles. Since 2000, I have made GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails available to Republican candidates, their political consultants, their campaign managers, their staff members, their volunteers, etc. Last Friday, I finished hand-delivering door-to-door the following to all 150 homes in my precinct a) that had at least one Republican or Independent voter and b) that had no Democrat yard signs: joint candidate piece from the Milton Township Republican Organization, sample ballot, an Illinois Family Institute Trump/Biden comparison piece, literature from the other 13 Republican candidates on the ballot in my precinct in contested races (Mark Curran, Jeanne Ives, Amy Grant, Christopher Kachiroubas, Robert Grogan, Richard Jorgensen, Babette Holder Youngberg, Timothy Elliott, Timothy Whelan, Ann Celine Walsh, Monique O’Toole, James McCluskey, and Richard Felice), and my GOPUSA Illinois business card. 900 of the aforesaid 2,400 pieces had to be folded to fit inside the envelopes provided by the DuPage County Republican Central Committee. The 150 envelopes had a) 358 mailing labels on them provided by the DuPage County Election Division, one for each individual Republican or Independent voter and b) my return address label.)

In its safety material, the Green party acknowledges that “COVID-19 has created a situation where campaigning is going to look very different.” For starters, canvassers should wear gloves and, this year more than ever, respect a voter who isn’t interested. “Canvassers must understand that the public may not be comfortable with this type of activity at their place of residence. (FROM THE PRESS RELEASE: The first day of Early Voting in DuPage County has gone smoothly, with hundreds of voters – some of whom lined up outside the DuPage County Fairgrounds in Wheaton before dawn – having cast their ballots by mid-afternoon. “We’re quite happy with how it’s gone today,” DuPage County Clerk Jean Kaczmarek said. “Though the line of voters snaked through the Fairgrounds parking lot today, people were patient, they practiced social distancing, and everyone – voters, pollworkers, and my staff – worked together to make this first day run smoothly.” At 8 a.m. the doors to the polling place at the Fairgrounds were opened and Kaczmarek announced, “the polls are open!” At the close of the day, 660 voters had exercised their right to vote at the Fairgrounds. The site is open 8 a.m. thru 4:30 p.m. weekdays through Oct. 16, and from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturdays through Oct. 17. Hours, as well as the number of Early Voting sites, expand on Oct. 19, when 18 sites all over the county will open to voters offering touchscreen voting. The current Fairgrounds site will offer paper ballots through Nov. 2. Plenty of PPE, including hand sanitizer, masks, and latex gloves, were available for voters. A professional cleaning crew wiped down surfaces throughout the day at the Fairgrounds voting site. “It’s great to see such enthusiasm by voters on the first day,” Kaczmarek said, “but we still have 39 days until Nov. 3, and you can vote on any of those days, either in-person or in the comfort of your home by mail ballot.” Thursday was also the day the Clerk’s Office began sending mail ballots to voters. Those ballots should start showing up in mailboxes of voters who’ve requested them soon. “If you’ve applied for a mail ballot, there’s no need to vote in person,” Kaczmarek said. “More than 159,000 DuPage County voters have already requested mail ballots, and my office will make sure each of those voters gets their ballot. Voters still have just over four weeks to request a mail ballot, but we recommend that if you plan to vote by mail, you apply for your ballot online as soon as possible. “This election may feel very different from any previous election – from the masks and plastic shields at the polling places to the disinformation coming from many quarters, but voting is still the same,” Kaczmarek said. “There are three ways to vote – by mail, in-person before Election Day, and in-person on Election Day. I urge voters to make the choice that is easiest and safest for them.”)
