Bruzan Taylor is one of about 15 people planning rallies to push the Naperville City Council to prohibit recreational marijuana shops from opening under the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act, which goes into effect Jan. 1. The city could enact a ban as soon as Tuesday; the issue is expected to be up for a vote during a meeting at 7 p.m. in the municipal center at 400 S. Eagle St. The Opt Out Naperville movement is hosting rallies at 10 a.m. Saturday in Central Park and 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Free Speech Pavilion along the Riverwalk to gather people who want the ban put into effect. Bruzan Taylor said she expects around 100 people to attend the Saturday event. “I would never have moved here if we had opted into selling recreational marijuana,” said Bruzan Taylor, a Naperville native who moved back to her hometown because of its strong reputation as a kid-friendly place. “I would have picked a suburb that didn’t.” In Chicago, where Bruzan Taylor and her family lived for about 10 years, she said neighbors using marijuana in their condo building would overwhelm the place with the smell of weed. If Naperville allows shops selling the drug for recreational purposes, she said she fears the same would happen in the state’s fourth-largest city. “I know it’s supposed to be on private property only,” she said about recreational use. “And yet, that’s not what happens.” . . . (FROM THE ARTICLE: Snowflakery knows no political bent, and hostility towards the free press is a grievance centuries older than the First Amendment. The twin tales of Playboy’s Brian Karem and Breitbart’s Joel Pollak exemplifies the oft ignored fact that people in power of all political stripes simply despise answering to the Fourth Estate. Karem’s currently fighting the Trump administration in the courtroom to reclaim his hard pass, which the White House suspended following the journalist’s verbal sparring match with an equally belligerent Sebastian Gorka during the president’s social media summit in the Rose Garden. Beto O’Rourke staffers booted Pollak from a campaign event, with the 2020 longshot’s spokeswoman lambasting as “hateful” and bordering on “perpetrat[ing] hate speech.” Both fights are absurd, and not because of the journalists prolonging them. Neither Karem nor Pollak have hidden their ideological or partisan affinities. The Playboy White House correspondent openly excoriates the president on Twitter, while Pollak’s persona and outlet are openly conservative. But both do actual journalism, and petty politicians have no right to sit in judgment. As long as they’re going to claim they support a free press, the Trumps and Betos of the world must tolerate the scrutiny, tough questions, and even intentional rhetorical provocations that come as a natural responsibility of power.)

A new Rasmussen Reports survey also said most voters believe the average journalist is liberal, and few are conservative. Council members Bob Roth, Johnny Watson, Marsha Berzins, Francoise Bergan, Charlie Richardson and mayor Bob LeGare opposed the proposed ordinance. At-large councilwoman Angela Lawson, who also works for the Colorado Secretary of State’s office, first introduced the idea to a city policy committee in October. LeGare said he didn’t believe the ordinance was ready, but council member Nicole Johnston rebutted that claim citing Lawson’s past year of work. None of the other council members who voted against the measure — all of which are running for re-election — gave a reason for their vote. The registration wouldn’t have limited or penalized lobbyists or city officials for interacting with each other. It would instruct lobbyists to file quarterly reports about their lobbying efforts, however. Those reporters would disclose “any expenditure over $75 directly benefiting a covered official,” according to city documents. “This does not prohibit expenditures over $75, it only requires reporting.” Several city council members cited concerns of who would qualify as a lobbyist and whether non-profit organizations attempting to seek influence on the city council would be required to register under the proposed rules. Under the ordinance, lobbyists were defined to be “any individual, including an attorney, who is self-employed or is employed or otherwise retained by any other person or organization: (1) For the purpose of engaging in lobbying; or (2) Whose scope of work requires him or her to lobby from time to time time.” During the meeting, the body unanimously gave a final approval to a new ethics code for elected city officials. The now-approved ordinance is the result of two different proposals from several city council members who sought stronger ethics rules for elected officials of the city. It tasks an independent panel of judges with investigating ethical complaints, prohibits the mayor and city council members from accepting gifts valued more than $300, and prevents council members from engaging in conflicts of interest.)

He introduced a recent UPI story about Republicans’ views on the drought and wildfires by saying: “Democrats blame everything bad, including bad weather, on Republicans, especially on Republicans who are conservative, White, male, older, non-poor and non-veteran.” And talking of a New York Times article about a photographer arrested while on assignment in the Bronx, Diersen wrote that since 2000, he has been thrown out of, barred from, or not advised of news conferences “by Democrats, Democrat plants, RINOs (Republicans in name only), their operatives, and their dupes.” Thus, if you don’t want to read some very pointed comments, you may not want to go to www.gopillinois.com.  But you would be missing a treasure of links to the day’s news and opinion. Diersen, 63, is a retired federal employee who became the Illinois editor of a national GOP website in 2000, and since 2004 has put out his own Illinois compilation every day. There’s usually about 50 articles daily, he says. He’s generally up by 3 a.m. He says he spends at least 10 hours a day on this passion of his, with no pay, and has put out links to more than 117,000 articles. As his comments above hinted, party regulars don’t always greet his work with relish. He includes dissident voices within the GOP tent, and some whose credibility is questionable. But he puts it all out there. He’s a GOP precinct committeeman, and he believes in people having information. He also wants to help elect Republican candidates who “will defend and advance the party’s platform.” The site makes available plenty of Diersen history, too, including how his “liberal Democrat superiors,” in his view, forced him to take early retirement at 49 from the U.S. General Accounting Office, “because of his opposition to race and gender based preference and his participation in a class action lawsuit” on that subject. He wouldn’t mind my telling you that he also passed his CPA and Certified Internal Auditor exams on first attempts more than three decades ago. Agree or disagree with him, but Diersen provides a bunch of interesting information — every day.)
