REASON
— How Trustworthy Does Facebook Think You Are? Should we be concerned about a new system to keep track of real vs. fake news? – Andrea O’Sullivan (DIERSEN: According to my critics/opponents, all news and commentary is fake except for the news and commentary that they put out or bless. They focus on a) stopping me from putting GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails together and sending them out and b) stopping everyone from reading the emails. Should I publish a list of my critics/opponents? Should I sue them?)
https://reason.com/archives/2018/08/28/how-trustworthy-does-facebook-think-you
(FROM THE ARTICLE: One new tool in Facebook’s bag of anti-“misinformation” tricks definitely ticks the “creep box”: Last week, the Washington Post reported that Facebook has been planning to assign a “trustworthiness score” for users on their platform for around a year. Users who are believed to more accurately flag news stories as valid or not will be given a higher score, while users suspected of flagging stories out of revenge or distaste—and thereby throwing off the algorithm—will be given a goose egg. The scale ranges from 0 to 1, and the system is now reportedly coming online. The new system is framed as a necessary augmentation of Facebook’s previous forays into third party-guided media ranking. In addition to partnering with self-deputized “fact-checkers” like PolitiFact and Snopes.com, Facebook created a button for average users to report when a story was “fake news.” The idea was that human feedback, provided by both “experts” and the wisdom of the crowds, would supplement the brittle fallibility of algorithms, leading to a better overall curation of what is being shared on Facebook.)

— US Officials Take Action To Protect Alaska Whistleblower (DIERSEN: I was a whistleblower. If I had been protected, my Democrat GAO superiors would NOT have forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, given me unfair performance expectations and appraisals, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, failed/refused to promote me beyond GS-13, gotten rid of my mentor in 1987, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take an $19,203 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980. My Democrat IRS superiors would NOT have failed/refused to promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, gotten rid of my mentor in 1975, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974. My Democrat Post Office superiors would NOT have forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests in 1969 and 1968.)

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2018/08/29/john-coxs-claim-that-he-was-raised-by-single-mother-south-side-chicago/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Here’s where the story gets fuzzy. Cox frequently says he “grew up” with a single mother, struggling on the South Side of Chicago. But records show that’s not the case. His mother married a third time, to a Post Office supervisor named Thomas Cox, on May 23, 1959, according to the marriage license, which said the ceremony was performed by a minister. In other words, John Cox was not yet 4 years old when his mother was no longer single. She remarried less than 3½ years after Cox’s father left her. . .Cox’s mother was a librarian at Calumet High School on the South Side, which had a student population that was almost exclusively African American. Cox graduated from the local high school, H.L. Richards in Oak Lawn, which according to his senior-year yearbook was almost all white. . .When we asked the Cox campaign to explain these discrepancies, officials responded with a statement from Cox that he was largely raised by his mother and that his stepfather was absent and abusive. . .Cox’s older brother has died, and his other siblings did not respond to requests for comment.)

The study’s findings represent a significant one-year loss of 4 percentage points in buying power, with the loss increasing from 30% to 34% from January 2017 to January 2018. According to the study, the loss occurred even though beneficiaries received a 2% annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2018. The study examines the growth, since 2000, in the price of goods and services that are typical for retired and disabled households, and compares that to the growth in Social Security benefits due to annual COLAs.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: It’s possible to trace the divergent fortunes of the Republican and Democratic parties in Illinois by looking at the voting histories of two counties: DuPage, in the suburbs of Chicago, and Williamson, in Southern Illinois coal country. DuPage was once a bulwark of the Illinois Republican Party, having supported its presidential candidates since the days of Abraham Lincoln. After World War II, DuPage’s villages burgeoned with middle-class homeowners who had fled Chicago’s corrupt political machine, and considered Republicans the party of good government and fiscal responsibility. . .How times have changed. In 2016, Hillary Clinton won Illinois by an even larger margin than her husband, but she won only 12 counties, most of them in the Chicago area. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Russian President Vladimir Putin believes that one should introduce administrative and even criminal responsibility in Russia for dismissing employees of pre-retirement age. “I deem it necessary to introduce administrative and even criminal responsibility for employers for dismissing workers of pre-retirement age, as well as for refusing to hire citizens for work because of their age,” Putin said in a televised address to the nation in connection with the widely discussed pension reform in Russia. One should envisage such responsibility within in the framework of additional guarantees that will protect interests of older citizens on the labor market. Today, the retirement age in Russia is 60 years for men and 55 years for women. This retirement age was introduced during the 1930s. The need to raise the retirement age in Russia has been discussed for a long time already due to the increased life expectancy and the inability to provide a decent pension while the number of employed individuals in the country is decreasing, and the number of pensioners is growing. In most countries of the world, the retirement age is 60-65 years.)

— DISGUSTING, TRAGIC: POT PUSHERS ARE OVERJOYED: Rauner set to sign medical marijuana expansion bill allowing drug as painkiller alternative – Robert McCoppin
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/ct-met-medical-marijuana-opioids-illinois-expansion-20180827-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In general, Rauner has opposed expanding the medical marijuana program, but a recent poll showing Pritzker with a large lead may have put pressure on him to support the politically popular measure. In addition, Rauner recently approved other measures requiring insurance coverage for opioid abuse and continuing education for doctors about opioid prescriptions. Kevin Sabet, president of Smart Approaches to Marijuana, opposes the expansion of medical marijuana, warning that it could lead to more addiction, more drivers who are under the influence and more users suffering from the drug’s harmful effects on attention, memory, decision-making and brain development. “From a scientific perspective, it makes no sense,” Sabet said. “The most comprehensive study on the issue was just published in The Lancet and found marijuana didn’t help with pain, nor did it reduce opioid use. “From a political perspective,” Sabet added, “it likely signals he feels pressure from J.B. Pritzker, who has welcomed pot with open arms.” But in states that have legalized medical marijuana, some studies have shown a decrease in opioid prescriptions and in opioid-related overdose deaths. Cannabis remains illegal under federal law.)

Present-day attendees drew comparisons between the current political climate and that of 1968, hoping to re-capture the energy of the past to bring about change. “If you don’t have a screaming opposition to scream at that, it will take over,” said Katy Nielsen, a present-day protestor. “Here we are 50 years later and not only is it continuing, it’s worse now in a lot of ways.”)

— Illinois Republicans: Prepare for a crash landing – Kristen McQueary
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/commentary/ct-perspec-mcqueary-illinois-republicans-rauner-pritzker-20180821-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: He’s also struggling with a wide enthusiasm gap. It’s late August and he has not managed to corral his conservative base or gin up support for his own agenda. Instead, he continues to flap against Madigan. Rauner is still getting hammered for the state’s budget impasse while Democrats who fed it are coasting. Remember: Rauner vetoed the first budget sent to him because it was $4 billion out of balance. The next budget the House prepared in 2016 was $7 billion out of balance. And the 2017 budget that included a 32 percent income tax hike and zero spending reforms? Rauner vetoed it. The legislature overrode him. You don’t hear enough about Rauner protecting taxpayers against a spend-happy legislature that hasn’t passed a balanced budget in more than a decade. Republican voters who felt jubilant on election night 2014 with Rauner’s victory and renewed hope that Illinois would turn itself around should prepare for a crash landing. Bring plenty of tequila. In once-safe DuPage County, Trump’s antics and Pritzker’s money are mixing a strong anti-GOP antidote. Rep. Peter Breen, R-Lombard, who sailed to Springfield on a strong record of fiscal conservatism, is locked in a race with a liberal Madigan-funded Democrat, Terra Costa Howard of Glen Ellyn. She also is getting support from Planned Parenthood, with whom Rauner partnered in signing House Bill 40, which expanded public funding of abortion. The fact that Breen, and even GOP Congressman Peter Roskam of Wheaton, are struggling to retain their seats in DuPage County is a manifestation of a fading-fast Republican Party in Illinois. Other Republican-leaning areas, including Rep. Tom Morrison’s Palatine-based district and an up-for-grabs seat in Arlington Heights, are possible flips to the Democrats. Rep. John Cabello, R-Machesney Park, is in a tighter-than-expected race with Democrat Jake Castanza of Rockford. Prognosticators also say it’s going to be a rough ride for Republicans Jerry Lee Long of Streator and Lindsay Parkhurst of Kankakee. The GOP fought hard to wrest those seats from the Democrats and now the pendulum might swing back. Again — anything can happen. But the campaign expenditure reports from Pritzker are revealing, not just in their indulgences but in their braggadocio. You can almost hear the pop of a Champagne cork with each entry.)

— WHAT IS THE EVIDENCE FOR MEDICAL MARIJUANA TO TREAT THE ADDICTION EPIDEMIC?
http://www.poppot.org/2018/08/18/slim-evidence-medical-marijuana-for-opiates/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Marijuana Policy Project promotes their drug as a substitute for opiate pain pills. Like the worst offenders in the opiate industry, the cannabis lobby follows an addiction-for-profit business model. Their master plan needs 80% of the demand to be met by 20% of the users. Science shows no evidence for using medical marijuana as a substitute for pain pills. Governor David Ige of Hawaii wisely refused to cave to lobbyists, and he vetoed a measure that would have allowed medical marijuana to treat opiate addiction. A large-scale, major study from Australia demonstrates that cannabis doesn’t work as a substitute for opiate pills in instances of chronic, non-cancer pain. The study came out in July, 2018 and it supports the findings of an American study published in September, 2017.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: I’m terrible with cars. I mean, can’t-so-much-as-change-a-spark-plug terrible. May I tune yours up for you? I’m bad in the kitchen, too. Eggs and toast are pretty much my whole repertoire, and I tend to burn the toast. Want me to cater your next event? You’d probably rather call a chef, or a mechanic. Expertise matters. Except when it comes to filling the top leadership posts in our democracy. Then, it seems, we’re ready to take a chance on those who have never led so much as a school board meeting. How often have you heard a candidate for governor, senator, even president boast that his or her complete lack of lower-rung political experience is a shimmering plus rather than a glaring minus? And how does that usually work out? Think about disgraced ex-Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens. Think about our current chaos president. Why do we imagine that high political leadership is the one job best left to the amateurs? Picture your dentist using that logic: I’ve never actually worked on teeth before. I’m proud to be an “outsider.” Open wide! That’s basically what’s unfolding right now in Illinois. For the second consecutive election, voters in the Land of Lincoln this November will choose a mega-wealthy governor who has never held any lower political office, and who only got to this one with a massive boost from his personal checkbook. We know this will be true regardless of the election result, because it’s a description that fits both of the major-party candidates. Sure, incumbent Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner can claim four years of on-the-job training, but given his performance during that time, it’s not much of a claim. He had never held any political office before buying into his first gubernatorial term in 2014 with $27.6 million from his own pocket. A venture capitalist, what he brought with him from that world were boardroom skills that you can’t say have been unproductive in office — because they’ve been counterproductive in office. As for Hyatt Hotels heir and Democratic nominee J.B. Pritzker, it seems his primary qualification for governor, and the main reason his party handed him the nomination over more experienced Democrats, is the 10-figure fortune he was born into and his willingness to use it. Rauner is worth nine figures, and Democrats decided to fight fire with more fire. Business people with no political experience who run for high office invariably argue that their business skills are not just an adequate substitute for political skills, but are better. This has never made sense. The goals, rules and responsibilities of business are completely different from those of politics. Rauner’s first term has been a textbook illustration of those differences.)

— Despite 2 voter rejections, Wheaton-Warrenville Community Unit School District 200 plans to construct new building — and gets sued over it – Bob Goldsborough (DIERSEN: What are your connections with this issue? My wife and I have paid real estate taxes big time to District 200 since 1978. We have never attended any District 200 school and we have never sent any child to any District 200 school. The District 200 headquarters is in my precinct as well as Whittier Grade School and Edison Middle School. Janet Shaw is a fellow Milton Township Republican Precinct Committeeman. I know Dan Wagner and his wife. I understand that the lawsuit has been assigned to Judge Bonnie Wheaton.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/ct-met-wheaton-school-preschool-project-20180806-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Twice since 2013, voters in the Wheaton and Warrenville area have rejected referendum proposals to raise taxes for the construction of a new preschool. Despite that, the Community Unit School District 200 board is proceeding with building a new Jefferson Early Childhood Center without voter approval through a different form of financing. But now a resident who opposes that measure has sued the district in DuPage County Circuit Court, seeking to halt the plans. Those in favor of building a new childhood center call the current 26,500-square-foot building outdated and note that the district in recent years has renovated or built anew every other school building except Jefferson. Jefferson, which was constructed in 1958 and had 277 pupils as of June, offers a traditional preschool and early childhood intervention for youths with mental or physical disabilities. Voters rejected a referendum proposal for a new Jefferson school in 2013, and again said no in 2017 as part of a much larger, $132 million proposal involving other district schools as well. Board President Jim Vroman said that after the 2017 referendum proposal failed, the district surveyed voters and found that “a substantial majority” supported building a new Jefferson. “That told us that voters were against the tax increase that the referendum would have generated if we had proceeded,” he said. Instead, the board agreed with a suggestion by a district financial adviser to use lease certificates, or secured lease credit financing, to fund a new Jefferson. District 200 would oversee construction of the estimated $15.5 million, 41,544-square-foot building, while Zions Bank would own the building. . .Frequent board critic Janet Shaw, who runs a blog that scrutinizes the district’s finances, long has questioned the legality of using lease certificates and added that “my real problem is that we don’t need (the new school building).” Shaw has filed suit against District 200, demanding a halt to the current plan to finance a new Jefferson. She is seeking a judge to require District 200’s board to submit a proposal for the new school building to the public via a referendum question. “District 200 is tampering with election results right here in DuPage County,” Shaw said. “The district thinks that by using the magic word ‘lease,’ its two failed referendum efforts and the will of the community are somehow erased and it can proceed in an identical manner as if a referendum had been adopted by the community to build and finance a new school.” A district spokesperson declined to comment on the lawsuit. Dan Wagner, a parent and longtime proponent of a new Jefferson, called the existing building outmoded, with some instruction occurring in converted broom closets. He added that the building lacks air conditioning, which precludes some special needs pupils from participating in gym classes.)

— Republican Party welcomes union member into leadership ranks – Chandra Lye (DIERSEN: Overwhelmingly, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes are anti-union and anti-wage earner. They stress that I was a union member for almost 12 years. They stress that I was a lowly wage earner 1964-1997. I washed dishes 1964-1966; cleaned golf shoes, chipped slag, and pumped gasoline in 1966; delivered mail 1966-1969; worked on an automobile assembly line and as a security guard in 1970; sold tires, automotive services, and major appliances 1970-1971; pumped gasoline 1971-1972; collected delinquent taxes 1971-1980; and audited federal agencies 1980-1997.)
https://chicagocitywire.com/stories/511525061-republican-party-welcomes-union-members-into-leadership-ranks
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Northwest Side (NWS) GOP Club, which touts itself as union-friendly, has added another leader with union ties to its ranks. The club recently announced Erin Jones was appointed precinct committeeman for Chicago’s 39th Ward. “Erin is a rock-star and a loyal member of the NWS GOP Club.” club officials said. “As a first-responder family, Erin and her husband serve the community both on and off-duty. We are happy to have her in a leadership role.” As a committeeman, Jones will represent the GOP voters of the precinct at the county level. “I grew up in Rogers Park and moved to the Northwest Side nine years ago,” Jones said. “I’ve been a Chicago police officer for the last 15 years, spending 10 of those years in patrol on the Westside of the City. I actually started working for the city when I was a teenager as a lifeguard in Rogers Park.” Jones is married to a Chicago firefighter and has two daughters. She was appointed by Matt Podgorski, NWS GOP Club chairman and 39th ward committeeman. The NWS GOP Club also has a party planned for Aug. 11 to welcome its card-carrying union members and encourage other union members to explore the club. Republican candidate and Chicago police sergeant Ammie Kessem is slated to attend the event. Kessem is challenging incumbent Rep. Robert Martwick (D-Chicago) for Illinois’ 19th House District seat in November’s general election.)

The federal government wastes the careers of and gets rid of its employees who are Republican, White, male, and/or non-veteran who the federal government does not promote to GS-13 (currently $96,403) by age 25, GS-14 (currently $113,920) by age 30, GS-15 (currently $134,000) by age 35, and Senior Executive Service (currently $164,200) by age 40.)
https://legalnewsline.com/stories/511525152-u-s-equal-employment-opportunity-commission-eeoc-sues-the-university-of-wisconsin-system-for-age-discrimination
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The University of Wisconsin System violated federal law when it refused to hire a former longtime employee because of her age, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) charged in a lawsuit filed. According to the EEOC’s lawsuit, Bambi Butzlaff Voss, who was 53 years old and subject to a layoff from her job as a Marketing and Communications Specialist at the University of Wisconsin’s Waukesha campus, applied for six different positions with the University of Wisconsin System’s central office in Madison, including an Associate Marketing and Communications Specialist position. Butzlaff Voss had 25 years of experience performing tasks similar, if not identical, to the ones in the position she applied for. But, because of Butzlaff Voss’s age, the University refused to hire her. Instead, it hired a 23-year-old candidate with less than two years of experience. Such alleged conduct violates the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 (ADEA). The EEOC sued in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin (EEOC v. Board of Regents of the University of Wisconsin System, Civil Action No: 3:18-cv-00602) after first trying to settle through its conciliation process. The lawsuit asks the court to order the University to hire Butzlaff Voss and provide back pay as well as pay liquidated damages. The lawsuit also seeks a permanent injunction prohibiting the University from discriminating against future candidates based on their age. “The Age Discrimination in Employment Act has been on the books for five decades,” said Gregory Gochanour, regional attorney for the EEOC’s Chicago District. “The EEOC will make sure employers follow the law, even if it means going to court to get the message across.” Julianne Bowman, district director of the EEOC’s Chicago District, said, “Workers over 40 years of age should have the same opportunities as those workers less than half their age. Ignoring a candidate’s decades of experience relevant to the available job, because of her age, to hire someone with less than two years of experience is illegal discrimination.”)
