(FROM THE ARTICLE: Mark Demich and Kevin Hengst, the couple across the street, are not actually married. Still, in the seven years they have lived in this Chicago suburb they have become like the Buckinghams, the Therrons, the Siconolfis — just another young family in the neighborhood, socializing porch to porch on summer evenings. Choosing the suburbs over the city, Mr. Demich and Mr. Hengst feared they would be The Gay Couple. But even in Wheaton — the home of an evangelical Christian college that until last year prohibited drinking and dancing, the seat of a reliably Republican county — they have found plenty of company. Sixty gay men and lesbians turned out for a wine-tasting a few weeks ago. About 30 played softball at a local park on a recent Saturday. . .In Wheaton, Mr. Demich, 42, said he liked the diversity. ”Of families,” he explained, after a brief pause. ”As opposed to city culture, where everything is around gay life, gay events. That’s not really the way America lives.” When he and Mr. Hengst decided to move to the suburbs, they told their real estate agent, ”Anything but Wheaton,” knowing its conservative reputation. Then they found the perfect house. They hung out a Gay Pride flag, and the neighbors invited them to a block party. The couple said they would bring fruit salad. ”Everyone broke out laughing,” Mr. Weinberg, a contractor, recalled. ”They were making fun of it, which went over well.” Neighborhood children have confronted the couple with questions: Do you two sleep together? Do you have wives? Their parents cringe, but also say they consider themselves, and their children, fortunate. ”Growing up in a good Catholic family, I didn’t even know about anything like this,” Ms. Weinberg said. ”It wasn’t thrown in front of me. These kids, if they don’t see it now, they’re going to see it soon. Living on a block like this is more the real world.” A few blocks over the train tracks, Ladd McClurg and Brad Ogilvie had similar concerns about moving to Wheaton when Mr. Ogilvie accepted a job in town. Mr. McClurg, who grew up in the Mormon faith, being taught that gays were sinners, said he arrived with ”almost a visceral disdain” for Wheaton’s many churches and their members. ”I learned to discover they’re not all bigoted,” Mr. McClurg said. ”There are a lot more variations on the middle out here than I was willing to give credit for.” Still, gays here say they step carefully to avoid causing offense. Betty Burns and Lisa Rechkemmer say they would never hold hands or hang out a pride flag for fear of upsetting their good relations with the neighbors. Mr. Ogilvie and Mr. McClurg display the flag, but resist the urge to hold hands unless they visit the city. One lesbian in Wheaton talked about how accepting her neighbors were, but did not want to be identified by name because she feared the kind of hate calls she and her partner received when they moved in two years ago. Mr. Demich and Mr. Hengst had to go to six or seven churches before they found one that did not preach that homosexuality is a sin. The church they chose, St. Paul Lutheran, had declared itself ”open and affirming” to gays five years ago, but only after a struggle. The decision was prompted not by gay parishioners — there were none at the time — but by a young man who had been baptized and confirmed in the church who died of AIDS. ”It lifted the issue,” said Marianne Avery, a member of the church council that debated the change. ”It was, ‘This is our children, this is not about letting someone in.’ ” Still, a handful of members left. ”What if they show up in drag?” the Rev. Melody Eastman, the pastor, recalled one woman asking.)

What is new, though, is the growing interest among Republican lawmakers, Hawley included, in doing something about it legislatively. One implication of the senator’s remarks is that Congress ought to be more solicitous of the interests of the non-college-educated, and to that end the senator recently introduced legislation that, according to The Hill, would allow low-income students to use federal dollars currently earmarked for higher education to pursue vocational training. Leaving aside the merits of Hawley’s proposal, there is reason to believe that it is good politics, or rather good Republican politics. As the Pew Research Center finds in a new survey, there’s been a sharp increase in dissatisfaction with America’s colleges and universities among Republicans in recent years, and it makes perfect sense for right-of-center policy makers to want to do something about it. Consider the changing composition of America’s major-party coalitions. Shortly after the 2018 midterms, Adam Harris observed that the Trump presidency was accelerating the “diploma divide,” which refers to the starkly different voting patterns of college-educated white voters and those without a degree, a split that is unique to whites. In the midterms, Republicans did 16 points better among whites without a college degree, while securing the votes of only 45 percent of their college-educated counterparts. In contrast, when George H. W. Bush defeated Michael Dukakis in 1988, he did so in part by winning college-educated white voters by 20 points. Another factor in the diploma divide is the gender gap in college attendance and completion. In the 1980s, women began graduating from college in higher numbers than men, and since then, their advantage has only widened. Today, you have to go up to the 60-and-over demographic before you find men outnumbering women among college graduates. The diploma divide has also had implications for partisan geography. When Republicans lost the House in 2006, half of their vulnerable seats were in districts that had more college graduates than the national average; that number was 70 percent for the 2018 midterms.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: There are lots of websites that compile political news, and I think it’s time I share one that I find quite interesting. It’s at www.gopillinois.com, and, as you can tell by its address, it has a Republican flavor. That is an understatement reinforced with the comments added by the compiler himself — DAVID DIERSEN of Wheaton. He introduced a recent UPI story about Republicans’ views on the drought and wildfires by saying: “Democrats blame everything bad, including bad weather, on Republicans, especially on Republicans who are conservative, White, male, older, non-poor and non-veteran.” And talking of a New York Times article about a photographer arrested while on assignment in the Bronx, Diersen wrote that since 2000, he has been thrown out of, barred from, or not advised of news conferences “by Democrats, Democrat plants, RINOs (Republicans in name only), their operatives, and their dupes.” Thus, if you don’t want to read some very pointed comments, you may not want to go to www.gopillinois.com.  But you would be missing a treasure of links to the day’s news and opinion. Diersen, 63, is a retired federal employee who became the Illinois editor of a national GOP website in 2000, and since 2004 has put out his own Illinois compilation every day. There’s usually about 50 articles daily, he says. He’s generally up by 3 a.m. He says he spends at least 10 hours a day on this passion of his, with no pay, and has put out links to more than 117,000 articles. As his comments above hinted, party regulars don’t always greet his work with relish. He includes dissident voices within the GOP tent, and some whose credibility is questionable. But he puts it all out there. He’s a GOP precinct committeeman, and he believes in people having information. He also wants to help elect Republican candidates who “will defend and advance the party’s platform.” The site makes available plenty of Diersen history, too, including how his “liberal Democrat superiors,” in his view, forced him to take early retirement at 49 from the U.S. General Accounting Office, “because of his opposition to race and gender based preference and his participation in a class action lawsuit” on that subject. He wouldn’t mind my telling you that he also passed his CPA and Certified Internal Auditor exams on first attempts more than three decades ago. Agree or disagree with him, but Diersen provides a bunch of interesting information — every day.)

Rich Miller writes the Capitol Fax blog, a subscription-based newsletter and website. In fiscal year 2018, Miller received $35,736 from state government. He received $34,791 in fiscal year 2019. So far for the fiscal year that started July 1, he’s received $1,500, according to the latest public records. Most of the payments to Miller were line items of $500 from various state agencies throughout the year, including the General Assembly. Miller sells both subscriptions to and advertisements on Capitol Fax. The Center Square obtained text messages and emails to and from Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s office through the Freedom of Information Act. Those messages show on June 17, the same day Miller posted a blog questioning the band’s scheduled performance, Miller sent a text to the governor’s deputy press secretary, Emily Bittner.)

Thomas, a physical therapist at St. Francis Hospital, said although he isn’t a Cape Girardeau native, he and his family are now “deeply rooted and integrated” in the city. “Perhaps I would say my strongest attribute I would bring the council is my background in government relations,” Thomas said. The third candidate, Christina Mershon, said she offers a “diverse” skill set developed in her position as director of continuing education at Southeast Missouri State University. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Nearly all college experiences begin with a series of orientation sessions. Most start with the assumption that you are the cursed offspring of a flawed society. You come to college not to be educated but to be reeducated. You have imbibed of racism, sexism, and homophobia. And for some outrageous amount of tuition that will send many of you into perpetual debt, the modern-day Gletkins of academia will purge you of these impure thoughts. The brainwashing will begin in orientation but will not end there. If you live in a dormitory, there will be required sensitivity sessions run by minions from the office of residence life. These generally are graduate students who are shouldering the intellectual rigors of a degree in education administration. The aim of these sessions, which are reminiscent of those imposed on Soviet factory workers to remove their “mechanistic thinking,” is to reeducate you to rid yourself of the values your parents taught you. Many of you, irrespective of discipline, will be compelled to complete a multicultural requirement. These courses are compulsory because otherwise no rational person would sit through them. Your multicultural requirement might be taken in African-American studies where, being a white person, you will learn that only whites, by definition, can be racists and all whites are racists. The evils of slavery will be pounded into you, even though your ancestors probably not only didn’t own slaves, but they also came to these shores long after slavery was abolished. Nonetheless, your skin color makes you guilty. But invoke a stereotype about black people based on their high crime and recidivism rate, and you will be admonished that to brush all black people with a single brush — especially without context — is racist. To characterize all white people as racists, however, is not a stereotype but an intellectual incision. You will learn that there is such a thing as “true truth.” This is the shared reality of an “oppressed” group whose common belief makes something true. Or in the profound words of Alexandria Octavio-Cortez, you can have moral truth without factual truth — whatever that means. In these classes, you will never say that the trans-Atlantic slave trade was the product of Africans who shifted the trans-Saharan slave trade westward. You will never point out that two African potentates, King Tegesibu of Dahomey and King Alvare of the Congo, were among the wealthiest men in the known world, having gotten rich by selling slaves. It is not that the administration doesn’t know what goes on in these classes, but to intercede would result in charges of racism and violation of so-called academic freedom. If you complain, your grade will crash to the floor. In gender studies, remember there are more than two genders. Never, ever say you can’t change your DNA. Women are equal to men in every way, and biology is not destiny. All apparent biological differences are really a function of culture. After all, we live in a world where trans-women should be able to get abortions. All genders and races should be in all the professions in proportion to their distribution in the population is the current dogma. Any departure from that is a function of cultural oppression. The fact that Asians disproportionately dominate math and science classes is a function of some cultural flaw. Only on the athletic field does pure competition exist. If you regurgitate this view of the world, apologize for being white, and check your white male privilege, you will do fine. Do these classes change attitudes? Yes, but not as the intellectual Gletkins think.)
