(FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois State Senator Heather Steans (D-Chicago) and Illinois State Representative Kelly Cassidy (D-Chicago) believe that legalizing marijuana for recreational use will be good for Illinois so they have introduced SB 316 and HB 2353 and, as part of the public relations push, formed the Coalition for a Safer Illinois. Yes, Safer. It’s hard to imagine how adding more drugged drivers on the roads and putting more drugs into the hands of our children could possibly make Illinois safer. The bills before the General Assembly would legalize the possession of up to 28 grams of marijuana and allow facilities to sell marijuana products for adults over 21 and tax and regulate those sales “in a manner similar to alcohol.” “Safer?”  Hardly.  We just have to look to the examples of Colorado and Washington State to see the consequences.  Both states legalized marijuana for recreational use in 2013 and 2012 respectively. Colorado now has more pot shops than Starbucks and McDonald’s combined. . .You, too, can help! (FROM THE ARTICLE: Among those confirming that they either intend to run or are seriously considering doing so in Roskam’s west suburban 6th District are Amanda Howland, a lawyer and psychologist who got 42 percent of the vote against him in 2016; Barrington Hills Planning Commission member Kelly Mazeski, a former state senate hopeful and ex-financial consultant; and Carole Cheney, who now works as district chief of staff for neighboring Congressman Bill Foster, D-Geneva. Howland says she’s definitely in the contest and points to the name recognition she built up in her prior race. Mazesk is “exploring” running but is interested enough that she’s met both with the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (the party’s House elections unit) and Emily’s List, a prominent women’s funding group. Cheney says she “likely” to get in the race because, “The people in the 6th Congressional District are entitled to a representative who respects and listens to them regardless of political party.” The field of possible candidates is bigger than that, though, with several other names being rumored. The biggest—one that some insiders say has DCCC’s blessing—is Maura Sullivan. I wasn’t able to reach her, but Sullivan comes right out of central casting: a former U.S. Marine and Iraq war veteran who graduated from Northwestern University, got an MBA from Harvard University, and until recently was a senior public affairs official at the Pentagon. But Sullivan also reportedly lives in Evanston, something that likely would become an issue if she moved to run. DCCC isn’t tipping its hand, other than saying that the 6th is on its short list of national targets for next year. Says a spokeswoman, “There’s no question that Rep. Peter Roskam is out of step with Illinois voters. We fully expect to have a strong recruit in the sixth district and it’s why we’ve made an unprecedented investment in the region by investing in a full-time, local organizer to harness the grassroots energy we’re seeing on the ground.” To emphasize the point, the DuPage County Democratic Organization says it’s expecting quite a turnout for its annual dinner on April, with at least three Democratic candidates for governor expected to attend: Chris Kennedy, Ameya Pawar and J.B. Pritzker. Robert Peickert, chair of the DuPage County Democratic Organization, says he hopes to build on momentum from the fall, when the party increased from 1 to 18 the number of township slots it holds in the county. However, the other 54 township positions are held by Republicans, and Roskam says he’s not sweating. “DCCC is not unknown to me. I saw them in ’06 and ’08,” he told me in a phone call. While Hillary Clinton may have out-polled Trump in the district in November, “I did better than John McCain (when he was the GOP presidential nominee) and outdid Obama in Obama’s big year (2008,) says Roskam. “I know the district and the playbook.” It looks like 2018 could be interesting.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Elizabethtown, Kentucky, physician became a focus of attention not only because videos of the incident had been broadcast around the world, but also because he was convicted more than a decade ago of felony charges involving his prescribing of drugs and spent years trying to regain his medical license. In between, Dao made money playing poker, logging $234,664 in winnings, TMZ reported. . .According to records from the Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure, Dao went to medical school at the University of Medicine of Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, graduating in 1974. He was licensed in Kentucky with a specialty in pulmonary disease. His legal troubles started in 2003, when his medical license was suspended after an undercover sting operation at a Louisville motel for allegedly writing fraudulent prescriptions. According to the documents, the licensing board had learned that Dao had become sexually interested in a patient and hired the patient as his office manager. That man later said he quit his job because Dao “pursued him aggressively” and arranged to provide him with prescription drugs in exchange for sex. Dao was ultimately convicted in late 2004 of several counts of obtaining drugs by fraud or deceit and was placed on five years of supervised probation and surrendered his medical license. His longtime effort to get his license back finally succeeded in 2015, when the licensing board allowed him to practice medicine again.)

The truth is Jefferson could use some work.  But, like many of our homes we need to prioritize and sometimes things must wait until we’ve paid off the debt that we’ve already run up.  With what the district spent on Hubble, had they built a Hubble more in line with the other 3 middle schools, they could have built a new Jefferson at the same time for the same money.)

That would be a lot cheaper than the current wealth redistribution built into the tax system. In 2004, black people made up 12% of the population and 20% of those who didn’t file taxes at all. It was estimated that 50.7% of African American households, 52% of Hispanic households and 37% of white households paid no income taxes. The numbers would likely have only gotten worse after the recession, which destroyed large numbers of African-American jobs, and the Obama years, which traded social welfare for economic progress. An otherwise equal tax system with a 5% white privilege tax would be an enormous improvement. How do you calculate the income losses for a white student shut out of college by affirmative action or a white business owner’s income losses due to preferential business programs aimed at minorities? The white student would happily pay that 5% to be allowed to go to college instead of being told that more diverse students with worse grades will cut ahead of him in line because they are “disadvantaged”. It would be easier for the white business owner to calculate in a fixed privilege tax for an otherwise competitive market than the intangible forms of diversity discrimination that rig the game. A 5% white privilege tax would be far too honest. The real tax is hidden and much higher. But the white privilege tax does raise all sorts of fascinating questions. How do you calculate it? It can’t be by appearing or identifying as a minority. Such an unfair performative system would allow Rachel Dolezal, aka Nkechi Diallo, to escape paying her white privilege tax after unfairly exploiting her white privilege to head the NAACP. If white people can just braid their hair in dreadlocks and spend a week in a tanning salon before renaming themselves Mkesi Daluboo or Willami Clintonoo, what good is a white privilege tax? The only fair way to do it is with a DNA test.)

Even Barack Obama’s State Department quietly acknowledged that fact. While American judges bemoan Donald Trump’s travel ban because it “targets Muslims,” some Muslims certainly don’t have any trouble making it all about religion. As Gary Bauer notes, “A diplomatic spat erupted recently when Turkey wanted to send diplomats to the Netherlands to campaign among the Turkish residents there for an upcoming constitutional referendum in Turkey. Dutch officials refused to allow the visit, which coincided with their own hotly contested election, and the Turkish government erupted in rage.” “Shame on the EU,” Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan thundered. “Down with your European principles, values and justice.” He wasn’t done, claiming, “They started a clash between the cross and the crescent. There is no other explanation.” Worse, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu threatened, “Soon wars of religion … will start in Europe.” This might happen because, he added, “We could open the way for 15,000 refugees … each month and blow [Europe’s] mind.” Now, a brief history lesson. Less than 100 years after Mohammad’s death, Muslims were invading Europe — first Spain and then France before Frankish King Charles Martel defeated them at the Battle of Tours in 732. Hundreds of years of subsequent Muslim aggression led to the Crusades. So no, Dutch politicians did not “start a clash between the cross and the crescent.” Muslims did that 1,400 years ago and they’ve never stopped. The battle just looks different now, and the “army” is a horde of “refugees.” Did we mention that Turkey is a member of NATO and ostensibly and ally of Western Europe?)
