When my grandfather got off a boat on Ellis Island in about 1923, he caught a train to Chicago and he drove a bus in this city for about 40 years,” Pence told the crowd. “My mom and dad both grew up on the South Side of Chicago, down around 55th and Honore. In fact, we have family that goes to school and lives and works in this community here today.”  The religious conservative also noted how especially meaningful it was to be addressing the City Club during December, the time of year he often traveled to Chicago as a child. “It’s very personal when I’m in this city. I feel very at home. My story is I was raised by two big city kids in a really small town in southern Indiana,” said Pence, who grew up in Columbus, Ind., and represented the area in Congress before becoming governor in 2013. “Particularly this time of year, the Pence family would find themselves in the back of a station wagon making the long trip up what was then Highway 31 to the South Side of Chicago to hearth and home and family and friends. It’s a blessing to be here this time of year with all of you and reflect on those deep memories.” The speech may have been a blessing, but Pence also used it as an opportunity to unload some ribbing on what he characterized as Illinois’ political and governmental dysfunction. He noted Indiana-purchased billboards in Illinois that read “Caution high taxes ahead” and “Attention tax drop. State line 16 miles ahead” as the audience laughed. “We’ve been buying a lot in Crain’s Chicago Business magazine,” Pence said with a smirk. “My personal favorite was: You had me at balanced budget.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: For a while Wednesday night and into Thursday, you may have noticed on the website where more than 40 percent of U.S. adults are said to get word of current events, the biggest news in Chicago was a double rainbow. This is what happens when Facebook tweaks its news feed algorithm. Every person with a smartphone shot got to decorate your news feed, turning it into a veritable Rainbow Connection, squeezing out whatever else might have been going on in the world, potentially affecting your life and business. Yet, to be honest, the rash of rainbows actually were a welcome respite. The sight of something everyone could get behind was a much-needed palate cleanser from what Facebook has become of late, even if it grew repetitive after a while. A fuller spectrum of color is nice when so much seems geared to making us see red. Since Facebook moved to downgrade and downplay news sites (such as the Chicago Tribune) in its news feed, the social media site with more than 1 billion users worldwide has, for many users, become an even more contentious toxic dump of inflamed political bickering and rumors. The expectation when the change was announced was that users would be inundated by their Facebook friends’ vacation videos, baby pictures, food commentary, health updates and other trivia. That’s all there. There’s no shortage of info about which of your acquaintances doesn’t get the appeal of “Pokemon Go,” who went to the Adele concert and who scored well on a vocabulary test making the rounds. But because the algorithm favors what users share among themselves, respond to, spend time with and comment on, the “real” news that finds its way into the stream can be among the most extreme, divisive version of any given story.)
