ABC7
— YouTube shooter identified as user Nasim Aghdam
http://abc7chicago.com/sources-youtube-shooter-identified-as-user-nasim-aghdam/3298743/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: According to her website, a possible motivation for the shooting could have been tied to her many YouTube accounts, which she says have seen a decline in viewership over the past few months. She embedded videos from the biggest YouTubers on the platform on the site, including massive creator Casey Neistat. In them, they talk about the YouTube “Ad-apocalypse” where many users are seeing massive dips in traffic, subscriber count loss, and de-monetization of videos. Neistat has more than 9,000,000 subscribers and made a famous video about the YouTube ad revenue scare for creators. It appears that Aghdam was disgruntled by the changes in the YouTube platform. She wrote on her website, “Be aware! Dictatorship exists in all countries but with different tactics! They only care for personal and short-term profits and do anything to reach their goals even by fooling simple-minded people, hiding the truth, manipulating science and everything, putting public mental and physical health at risk, abusing non-human animals, polluting the environment, destroying family values, promoting materialism and sexual degeneration in the name of freedom and turning people into programmed robots!” She goes on to quote Adolf Hitler saying, “Make the lie big, make it simple, keep saying it and eventually they will believe it.” The rest of her message targets YouTube and censorship. “There is no free speech in the real world and you will be suppressed for telling the truth that is not supported by the system. Videos of targeted users are filtered and merely relegated so that people can hardly see their videos.” Aghdam’s website shows screenshots of her “reduced” and “supressed” videos. She referred to a specific video that appeared to be an instructional video for a workout saying, “This video got age-restricted after new, close-minded YouTube employees got control of my farsi YouTube channel last year, 2016, and began filtering my videos to reduce views and suppress and discourage me from making my videos!” Feb. 20, YouTube enacted a new advertising policy that demonetized channels with less than 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 hours of watch time. Though Aghdam’s main English channel had more than 5,000 subscribers, many of her videos appeared to be demonetized.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Lake County Republican Party is slated to hold its official county GOP convention on April 18 at Concorde Banquets in Kildeer. “All Lake County Republican precinct committeemen who were duly elected and certified in the March 20, 2018, Republican primary election are called on to attend the county convention and cast their respective weighted votes for chairman of the Lake County Republican Central Committee, Central Committeemen of the Illinois Republican Party from their respective congressional districts, duly proposed amendments to the bylaws of the Lake County Republican Central Committee, various legislative and representative committees and certain other important business of the Lake County Republican Central Committee,” Lake County Republican Party Chairman Mark Shaw said in a press release. Shaw added “all 18 Republican Township Organizations will convene to conduct business relevant to their respective organizations and to caucus regarding the business to be conducted at the county convention, which (will be) gaveled to order at 7 p.m. that same evening.” “Recently, I announced my candidacy for re-election and would be honored if you would be my guest at the event,” Shaw said in the release disbursed among GOP leaders. Shaw is also committeeman for the 10th Congressional District and ran for representative in the 58th House District in 2012, losing to Scott Drury (D-Highwood). Among the Republican winners in the March 20, primary that will be on the ballot for the Nov. 6 general election are Gov. ONE NEWS NOW
— Next up: Gov’t-endorsed bullying, taunting? If LGBTQ advocates in Illinois get their way, all public school students will be indoctrinated with pro-homosexual propaganda from the time they’re five years old. – Bob Kellogg
https://www.onenewsnow.com/education/2018/04/04/next-up-govt-endorsed-bullying-taunting
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Homosexual and transgender activists have persuaded liberal legislators to sponsor legislation that would require all public school (K-12) textbooks, regardless of the subject, to proclaim positive contributions of homosexuals to society. “[This legislation] would require that any book or book substitute that will be used as a text or text substitute include the ‘role and contributions’ of homosexuals and men and women who adopt opposite-sex persona [a.k.a., transgenderism],” explains Laurie Higgins with the Illinois Family Institute. Two Democratic lawmakers – State Senator Heather Steans and State Representative Anna Moeller – are the sponsors of SB 3249 and HB 5596 respectively. The bills also “require every public elementary school and high school to include in its curriculum a unit of instruction studying the significant role of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals in society.” Higgins warns parents that those who live outside of Illinois shouldn’t brush aside this information, believing it will not affect them. “This will come to other states,” she warns. “It started in California; now it’s coming to Illinois. All it takes is a couple of homosexuals and/or leftists in your state legislature to bring this bill and it will be in your schools, too.” And the danger in that, according to Stella Morabito at The Federalist, is that the highly politicized nature of public schools will essentially “draw virtual targets” on the backs of students whose beliefs don’t align with the school’s. “A bully [would be] free to target with the taunt ‘bigot’ any child who comes from a traditional Christian home – and the curricula will back them up,” Morabito writes. Higgins is convinced that should the legislation pass, Republican Governor Bruce Rauner would sign it into law. It would become effective July 1, 2019. She recommends a two-fold approach to parents at this time: fight the bills – but at the same time “plan an escape route for your children from government schools.”)

AMERICAN SPECTATOR
— Marching Orders for Trump’s New VA Secretary – BETSY MCCAUGHEY (DIERSEN: What work experience do you have? My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have always viciously demonized, viciously denigrated, and viciously condemned the work experience that I gained working for IRS 1971-1980, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $81,071-$91,880 and for GAO 1980-1997, the last 11 years of which at the GS-13 Step 1-10 levels, currently $96,403-$125,325. What opinion do those who represent you in government and in politics have of the work experience that you have? Based on their words and their actions, many, if not most, if not virtually all of those who represent me in government and in politics have an extremely low opinion of the work experience that I have.)
https://spectator.org/marching-orders-for-trumps-new-va-secretary/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Since President Trump ousted Veterans Administration Secretary David Shulkin, the question reverberating in Washington is whether Trump’s new pick, Admiral Ronny Jackson, is capable of heading a department with 360,000 employees and 9 million vets under its care. Senate Democrats carp he lacks experience running “a complex organization.” Experience is overrated. President Obama’s VA Secretary, Robert McDonald, failed miserably, despite having run Procter & Gamble. Vets died on phony wait lists on McDonald’s watch. . .Pundits are predicting a confirmation battle. The smart money should be on Jackson. He’s combat tested. Disregard the partisan drivel about his lack of experience running a big organization. It’s coming from the same people who had no problem making a community organizer the President.)

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/03/world/asia/india-fake-news.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Indian government called the decree a crackdown on fake news. It lasted less than a day. On Monday evening, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting abruptly announced that it would penalize journalists who spread “fake news,” the term popularized by President Trump to disparage what he has regarded as unfair coverage of his 2016 American presidential campaign and first year in office. The term is now widely used around the world by authoritarian politicians and governments to describe reporting that they find objectionable. Members of India’s freewheeling press expressed shock and outrage at the announcement, seeing the hidden hand of Prime Minister Narendra Modi — who enjoys warm relations with Mr. Trump — to quell negative media coverage ahead of India’s general election next year.)

— California: A ‘Sanctuary’ for Criminals The state threw out the rule of law, but Orange County will join the resistance. – Michelle Park Steel (DIERSEN: When will DuPage County “join the resistance?” Which DuPage County Board Members will lead the resistance?)
https://www.wsj.com/articles/california-a-sanctuary-for-criminals-1522793743
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In Orange County, we reject this kind of reckless behavior. As a member of the Board of Supervisors, I have a say in how to improve my community of 3.2 million residents. We are home to large groups of immigrant communities, and we fully embrace the diverse cultures of our immigrant population. Our concern is about criminal illegal aliens who are falling through the cracks because our sheriff can’t talk to federal immigration agents. On March 27 I introduced a resolution to condemn the state sanctuary law and to direct county counsel to take legal action. Every Orange County supervisor present voted in favor. We currently are reviewing the best ways in which to intervene in the federal government’s lawsuit against California. States cannot simply opt out of federal laws they don’t like. If tomorrow California decided that the First Amendment was a nuisance and passed legislation to restrict this constitutional right, Americans wouldn’t accept the new law. I came to this country with a great respect for the freedom and safety that the Constitution affords its citizens. Condemning the sanctuary law has nothing to do with race or politics. It’s about protecting Americans and their constitutional rights. There’s a long road ahead in fixing our broken immigration system, but, along the way, local law enforcement should cooperate fully with the federal law.)

— More Employees Report Seeing Prohibited Personnel Practices (DIERSEN: While I worked for the federal government for almost 30 years, I saw my Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates commit many PPPs, most commonly, a) discriminating against federal employees because they were Republican, White, male, and/or non-veteran and had not made GS-13 (currently $96,403) by age 25, GS-14 (currently $113,920) by age 30, GS-15 (currently $134,000) by age 35, and Senior Executive Service (currently $164,200) by age 40 and b) wasting the careers of and getting rid of employees who complained about patronage, political affiliation discrimination, reverse discrimination, age retaliation, and/or retaliation.)

http://www.fedweek.com/fedweek/more-employees-report-seeing-prohibited-personnel-practices/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: More federal employees reported in 2016 that they had seen prohibited personnel practices in the workplace than in 2010, MSPB has said in a preview of an upcoming report. A budget-related document notes that until the MSPB board has a quorum—it has lacked one for more than a year although nominees for the two vacant seats recently were named—it cannot issue the kind of studies it conducts regularly into federal personnel issues. However, it gave some detail regarding reports in progress. One shows that in a survey MSPB conducted in 2016, more employees reported observing “PPPs”—which include whistleblower retaliation, various forms of discrimination, decisions not based on merit, and more—compared with a similar survey in 2010. “Notably, only 54 percent of respondents in 2016 indicated that they had observed no PPPs, compared to 78 percent in 2010,” it says. The later survey also found high rates of employees reporting that their agencies are not complying with new PPP created in 2012, that non-disclosure policies must include language stating that the policies do not reduce employee whistleblowing rights. MSPB added that it is working on several other studies that rely in part on the survey data. “Those studies cover areas such as individual drivers of employee engagement, sexual harassment, performance management, effectiveness of the HR workforce, and the Pathways program,” it said.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: But inside the precincts of Madigan’s district on Election Day, I had a clear look at how his political machine keeps churning along, and how it probably will for as long as he wants. The power of the most powerful politician in Illinois starts with his election operation and service delivery in his home ward. When I stepped into the basement polling place, I was greeted by an election judge who noted my surprise. “It’s not uncommon in our community,” she said. As I later learned, she was partly right. At one time, dozens of Chicago houses served as voting sites — as many as 150 in 1989, according to a Chicago Tribune article that year. Most were picked as polling places years or even decades earlier, when election officials favored locations in the middle of each precinct. That was also a time when the Democratic Machine had a tighter grip on the entire electoral process. The house on 68th Street has been used as a polling place since at least 2007, according to the available Chicago Board of Election records, but probably far longer. The owners didn’t respond to inquiries about it. By the primary this year, it was the only single-family house still used as a polling place in Chicago, records show.)

April 1 Morning Edition

GOPUSA ILLINOIS
— What were you doing 40 years ago today? My wife Karen and I were getting married at her Catholic church in Chicago. We both worked in downtown Chicago. I had worked for IRS since 1971 and she had worked for the U.S. League of Savings Institutions since 1970. In today’s dollars, IRS paid me $89,178/year. We used her savings for the down payment to buy 1017 East Harrison in Wheaton and we used the profit from the sale of my one bedroom condo in the Outer Drive East building to buy a new 1978 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royale and a new 1978 Chevy Chevette. I soon sold my 1962 Chevy BelAir and I continued to store my 1972 Corvette in my mother’s garage in Crete. I took graduate accounting courses at DePaul’s downtown building and Karen soon started taking courses there toward a bachelor’s degree in finance. Because of Money Magazine’s February 1978 4-page article on us, IRS had disallowed all the graduate business courses that I had taken at Loyola and all the graduate accounting courses that I had taken at DePaul. Eventually, I won a split decision in Tax Court. The judge imposed a new rule that you cannot deduct accounting courses until you are qualified to take the CPA examination. I continued to rent out a town home in University Park that I had bought new in 1972.  I sold it in 1984 when we had 915 Cove Court built in Wheaton. – Dave Diersen

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Sean Casten, Democratic nominee for Congress challenging incumbent Peter Roskam in the 6th District, refuses to define Roskam’s claims this week involving a property tax deduction as “a success.” Roskam’s office received word from the U.S. Treasury Department that suggested Illinois taxpayer who filed before Jan. 1 can deduct their property taxes. Casten called a foul, asking, “Does Roskam think we’re going to forget that he was largely responsible for hitting us with this unfair tax hike in the first place?” He writes: “Hard-working homeowners throughout our district were counting on that property tax deduction, and Roskam sold them out in favor of the wealthy special interests that fund his campaign. Instead of writing self-serving letters to the Treasury Department, Roskam should try doing the job he was elected to do — working on behalf of the people who live right here in the 6th District.”)
— ROSKAM HITS BACK
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Also on Thursday, Roskam released a statement that blasted Casten for not saying whether he agrees or not with a tax plan proposed by Congressional Democrats if they win the majority in the midterm elections. Democrats are proposing a repeal of major pieces of President Trump’s tax reform legislation. Their plan would raise taxes on corporations and high-income households in order to pay for a $1 trillion infrastructure package. “The thousands of families who have received meaningful tax relief this year deserve to know whether Sean Casten fully supports his party’s efforts to raise tax rates and fully reinstate the Alternative Minimum Tax,” said Roskam for Congress spokesman Veronica Vera. “Now that his party has committed to increasing taxes on families and small businesses, Sean Casten has a responsibility to Sixth District voters to be honest about his intentions to raise their taxes.”)

After 1986, my Democrat GAO superiors rejected all my applications for GS-14 positions.)
http://www.gopusa.com/?p=42614
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The backlash began earlier in the week, when Ingraham made fun of Hogg, who has been a vocal activist after the Feb. 14 shooting that claimed 17 lives, for being rejected from four universities in the University of California school system. She tweeted a story by the Daily Wire addressing the rejections, adding on Twitter, “David Hogg Rejected By Four Colleges To Which He Applied and whines about it. (Dinged by UCLA with a 4.1 GPA…totally predictable given acceptance rates.)” Hogg, who has a 4.2 GPA, was accepted by Florida Atlantic University, Cal Poly and Cal State San Marcos. The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School senior was in the school when shooter Nikolas Cruz opened fire, killing 14 students and three faculty members.)

IMMIGRATION REFORM

https://immigrationreform.com/2018/03/27/california-sheriff-rejects-sanctuary-law-makes-information-illegals-public/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Orange County Sheriff’s Department has announced that it will begin publishing a list of criminal aliens who are inmates in the county jail, as part of its existing “Who’s in Jail,” online database. The information made public will also include when criminal aliens are released from jail, a move that comes in direct retaliation to the state’s “sanctuary” laws which prohibit cooperation between police and federal immigration officials. “This is in response to SB-54 limiting our ability to communicate with federal authorities and our concern that criminals are being released to the street when there’s another avenue to safeguard the community by handing them over (to ICE for potential deportation),” Orange County Undersheriff Don Barnes said. California’s “sanctuary law” has recently encountered resistance to this dangerous policy from multiple communities in California. Most notably, the City Council in Los Alamitos voted last week on an ordinance to exempt the city from state law over concerns that it is unconstitutional. The Yorba Linda City Council agreed to file an amicus brief to a lawsuit filed by the Department of Justice against California. The Orange County Board of Supervisors are also expected to consider a range of possible actions against the state law as well. Open borders groups like the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) have been actively working to prevent cities in California from opposing the states “sanctuary” laws.)

When Republicans got elected, my Democrat superiors worked even harder to get rid of me.)
https://www.politico.com/story/2018/03/30/trump-washington-civil-servants-492347
(FROM THE ARTICLE: One Health and Human Services employee swore off online dating after potential suitors repeatedly got upset that he worked for the Trump administration. An Education Department fellow eagerly returned to teaching after listening to Betsy DeVos bash public schools. And one Environmental Protection Agency official said staffers are distraught at having to personally dismantle regulations they spent years crafting. This is Donald Trump’s government 14 months into his presidency. Interviews with nearly three dozen current and recently departed workers across the ideological spectrum and across the federal bureaucracy — from the State Department to the Interior Department — show that Trump’s presidency has fundamentally altered the lives of government workers in ways big and small. Trump’s frequent attacks on the “deep state” have engendered deep distrust between career and political employees, pushing many long-time civil servants toward the exits and raising the possibility of a government-wide brain drain. And while some workers, such as Border Patrol agents, are feeling newly empowered under Trump, morale at other agencies is so low that some employees said they were suffering from increased anxiety and depression that has complicated their personal relationships and even led to heavier drinking. Several career employees said they were keeping their heads down and ignoring possible avenues for promotions because they have little interest in being subjected to the political infighting that has taken hold in many agencies. “It’s the worst administration and I’ve dealt with all of them from Ronald Reagan all the way forward,” said Jeffrey David Cox, the national president of the American Federation of Government Employees, the country’s largest federal employee union. “The worst with morale of employees. The worst with constantly wanting to take away rights and benefits. And the worst in trying to starve the agencies of resources.”)

My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have always viciously demonized, viciously denigrated, and viciously condemned the work experience that I gained working for the Post Office 1966-1969, for IRS 1971-1980, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $81,071-$91,880, and for GAO 1980-1997, the last 11 years of which at the GS-13 Step 1-10 levels, currently $96,403-$125,325. (FROM THE ARTICLE: California – Republican gubernatorial candidate John Cox praised the Orange County Board of Supervisors’ for supporting the rule of law and opposing Governor Jerry Brown and Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom’s devastating Sanctuary State policy. “I applaud the Orange County Supervisors who have courageously stood up to California Attorney General Xavier Becerra illegal actions,” said Cox. “They have made clear their intent to obey federal immigration law and uphold their oaths to the Constitution”. “I am thrilled to see communities like Escondido in my home county of San Diego and our San Diego County Board of Supervisors potentially following suit,” Cox said.)

http://www.governing.com/topics/politics/gov-2018-governors-races-republicans-election.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner (R) Even before the March 20 primary, Rauner was vulnerable, thanks in part to an ongoing battle with the Democratic-controlled legislature, which kept the state without a full budget for more than two years, as well as from a conservative backlash over his decision to sign a bill providing state funding for abortions for low-income women. On primary day, he barely edged out socially conservative challenger Jeanne Ives. Meanwhile, J.B. Pritzker, a multibillionaire and the brother of the former Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker, easily defeated Chris Kennedy, a businessman and the son of Robert F. Kennedy, and progressive state Sen. Daniel Biss. The contest between Rauner and Pritzker is expected to get ugly, as Rauner has already been spending money on TV ads attacking Pritzker, linking him to impeached and jailed former Gov. Rod Blagojevich. But in a Democratic state in a Democratic year and with an unpopular Republican governor who has lost faith on the right, this is Pritzker’s race to lose.)

My Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates in the federal government were beyond furious when I got almost 3 years of full-time Civil Service credit when I paid the Civil Service Retirement System 7% of the salary (plus interest) that the Park Forest Post Office paid me while I was a part-time employee there 1966-1969.)
https://www.kitsapsun.com/story/news/local/2018/03/27/kilmer-bill-federal-retirement/447341002/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: But when he started to plan for retirement, he learned the years that he worked as a temporary employee didn’t count toward it because of a change in the federal system that went into effect the year he was hired at the shipyard. Under the new system, employees who transitioned into full-time positions could no longer retroactively contribute to their retirements for the time they worked as temporary employees, although they had been able to do so under the previous system. As a result, Hodge is now witnessing other employees retire who were hired at the shipyard as permanent employees after he started there. He must either work longer or retire early by the government’s standards with penalties to his benefits. “It’s hard to keep a good attitude, but as a manager I do it,” Hodge said. “We’re starting to see more people leave and it’s very frustrating.” After seeking out other avenues for assistance without result, Hodge and a few other shipyard workers sought help from U.S. Rep. Derek Kilmer. After learning about the complexities of Hodge’s case, Kilmer said he saw an opportunity to right what he says is a wrong.)

http://www.govexec.com/pay-benefits/2018/03/prospects-unclear-trumps-1-billion-performance-fund/147008/

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The omission of one White House management proposal from the $1.3 trillion omnibus spending bill for fiscal 2018, approved by Congress and signed by President Trump last week, could serve as a bellwether for the administration’s plans to transform the federal workforce. The spending package includes a number of provisions that specifically prohibit agency leaders from enacting plans to downsize or reshape their organizations without consulting Congress. And totally absent from the more-than 2,000-page document was the White House’s proposed $1 billion inter-agency performance fund, which the White House wanted to enact this fiscal year. That fund would be used by agencies for designing programs like performance-based pay and to pay bonuses for individual high performers across government.)

DUPAGE POLICY JOURNAL
— Diana Rauner: We’re moving to Italy if Bruce loses
https://dupagepolicyjournal.com/stories/511364971-diana-rauner-we-re-moving-to-italy-if-bruce-loses
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Gov. Bruce Rauner says he’ll fight for Illinoisans. But only if he wins re-election. If he loses, Rauner’s wife, Diana, says she and Bruce are out of here. “Bruce and I are moving to Italy,” a source says she flippantly told a group of “mostly Democrat” women from DuPage County last Thursday. The occasion was an event at the home of Naperville Mayor Steve Chirico and his wife, Julie Cole Chirico, chief fundraiser for embattled, but Rauner-financed House GOP Leader Jim Durkin (R-Western Springs). Diana Rauner’s Italy remark was a response to a question she received about Illinois’ stunning rate of outmigration. An attendee noted that several of her neighbors had left the state, asking Diana Rauner what her husband planned to do to encourage people to stay. “She made a vague comment about stopping Madigan and then said that, if Bruce lost and they couldn’t stop Madigan, they were moving to Italy,” the source told DuPage Policy Journal. “It was awkward.” In addition to employing his wife, Durkin and his campaign chief, David Walsh, are a longtime backers of Mayor Chirico, a moderate Republican who supports Rauner but actively opposed President Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election. The Rauners have traveled to Italy on official business during his administration. In Nov. 2016, Gov. Rauner and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel traveled to Rome along with State Sen. John Cullerton (D-Chicago) Chicago Ald. Ed Burke (D-14th), former social secretary to President Barack Obama, Desiree Rogers and U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) to see then-Chicago Archbishop Blase Cupich be elevated to cardinal. At a co-press conference with Emanuel in Vatican City, Rauner said “this time reminds us that the good lord did not make us Republicans or Democrats.” Seven months later, Rauner would break his promise to Cardinal Cupich that he would not sign a bill that would force Illinois taxpayers to pay for abortions.)

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
— Trump a power player in Illinois 2018 primary – Lynn Sweet
https://chicago.suntimes.com/columnists/trump-a-power-player-in-illinois-2018-primary/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: President Donald Trump is a big player in Tuesday’s Illinois primary with Trump-fueled voting expected to boost 2018 turnout compared to 2010 and 2012, the most recent nonpresidential years. Who does that help the most? On the GOP side, it’s pro-Trump governor candidate Jeanne Ives, taking on Gov. Bruce Rauner, who has been running from Trump. As for Democrats, the Trump factor benefits most the contenders who are able to seize the support of angry, newly energized voters. In the bigger primary races, that would include governor hopeful state Sen. Daniel Biss; House contender Marie Newman and Cook County Assessor challenger Fritz Kaegi. Here’s what I’ve learned about the Illinois Trump factors based on interviews with strategists, and my analysis of TV ads, direct mail and other political communications: Democrats furious over Trump’s 2016 victory, who usually don’t vote in nonpresidential years, are in this time. Those voters — younger, people of color and women — are likely more progressive, strategists tell me. Far fewer Republicans vote in Illinois primaries, so a candidate with a committed, animated base — that would be Ives — has an advantage. Rauner is wobbly on Trump. He’s loath to associate with Trump for fear of alienating Democratic and crossover GOP voters he will need in November. That is, should he be renominated since pro-Trump Ives, a state representative from Wheaton, has mustered a strong challenge from the right. The Democratic Governor’s Association is trying to throw the primary to Ives because she will be easier to beat in November. The DGA is running an ad praising her for being in “lockstep” with Trump — a pitch, wicked as it is from Democrats, to appeal to Trump primary voters turned off by Rauner.)

Most, if not virtually all of my GAO superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates DID NOT want to work for her, work with her, or supervise her because she was female, younger, Jewish, very intelligent, very demanding, and wealthy. She had an MBA from the University of Chicago and had passed the CPA examination on her first attempt. https://www.politico.com/story/2018/03/19/republican-megadonor-uihlein-470268
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Democrats and many Republicans in Illinois were horrified by the ad: a 60-second spot released by Gov. Bruce Rauner’s GOP primary challenger, Jeanne Ives, featuring a parade of politically incorrect takes on thorny cultural issues. A deep-voiced man portraying a transgender woman tells Rauner, “Thank you for signing legislation that lets me use the girls bathroom.” Then a young woman thanks Rauner for “making all Illinois families pay for my abortions.” But equally shocking to the content was the person who had made the ad possible: Richard Uihlein, a little-known Republican donor who had until recently been one of Rauner’s biggest supporters. After a fallout out with the governor over abortion policy, Uihlien gave $2.5 million to Ives in a single week this past January — essentially bankrolling her campaign to defeat Rauner in a Republican primary on Tuesday.)

http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2018/03/trump-made-white-house-staff-sign-ndas-to-stop-leaks-report.html

(FROM THE ARTICLE: It’s well-known that nearly everyone in Donald Trump’s orbit has to sign a nondisclosure agreement, from business associates, to campaign employees, to women he may or may not have had an affair with. Therefore it is simultaneously galling and non-at-all surprising that Trump may have pressured senior White House staffers into signing NDAs, though they are members of the federal government, not his personal employees. Trump actually told the Washington Post in April 2016 that he intended to use NDAs in the White House, saying “when people are chosen by a man to go into government at high levels and then they leave government and they write a book about a man and say a lot of things that were really guarded and personal, I don’t like that.” He allowed that “there could be some kind of a law that you can’t do this,” and experts say he was on to something: ACLU: Public employees can’t be gagged by private agreements. These so-called NDAs are unconstitutional and unenforceable.)

In one of her worst-yet panders — quite a distinction if you remember Hillary’s 2007 speech in Selma, Alabama — she apparently noticed the darker pigmentation of her Indian audience and adapted. She started out by reiterating her disdain for those who failed to recognize her virtues, saying that she won in places “that are optimistic, diverse, dynamic, moving forward,” compared with Trump voters who are always looking “backward.” Then, mockingly, talking to “those people” who voted for him, she continued, “You know you didn’t like black people getting rights, you don’t like women, you know, getting jobs, you don’t want to, you know, see Indian-Americans succeeding more than you are.”)

SPRINGFIELD STATE JOURNAL REGISTER
— My predictions for Tuesday’s primary election – Bernard Schoenburg
http://www.sj-r.com/opinion/20180317/bernard-schoenburg-my-predictions-for-tuesdays-primary-election
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A year ago, it would have been hard to imagine a serious Republican challenge to first-term Gov. BRUCE RAUNER. But state Rep. JEANNE IVES of Wheaton is waging just that type of fight. A key reason Ives got into the race is that Rauner signed a bill he said he would veto — which in part expands taxpayer-paid abortions to Medicaid recipients. Rauner has said Ives is too far to the right to get elected in Illinois. Ives says Rauner lied about the abortion bill and is lying about her in ads that accuse her of being linked to House Speaker MICHAEL MADIGAN, D-Chicago. She also says Rauner doesn’t deserve another term after his first one. Ives got a lot of attention by running an ad, roundly criticized, that showed actors (including a man in a dress) seen by critics as stereotypical negative views of groups including transgender people. Some newspapers have cited that ad as divisive and the reason they can’t endorse Ives. It did get attention, but also gave people pause. I think Rauner gets the nomination — but Ives could well be close. And if she even overcomes him, it won’t be a shock. . .On the GOP side, Rauner backs Urbana attorney ERIKA HAROLD, and she beats DuPage County Board member GARY GRASSO.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: President Trump has gotten flack for not filling a significant number of political appointee positions in his first year. His answer to that is “You don’t need them.” He has cut positions across departments by eliminating people who probably don’t like the guy anyway. In his first six months, the federal employee count went down 10,700. It is not just what he cut, but likewise what he has not added. In their first six months, President Bush (the younger) added 36,000 and President Obama added 60,000. To justify forcing me to “start at the bottom,” GAO dismissed the fact a) that GAO audits IRS, b) that much of what IRS Revenue Officers do is similar to what GAO Analysts do, c) that I had almost 9 years of experience working for IRS, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $81,071-$91,880, d) that I had earned an MBA from Loyola in 1976, e) that I had almost completed the requirements for a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul, and f) that I had passed the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: We also need to attract new Foreign Service officers. Hiring declined by more than a third from 2016 to 2017, and the number of young people seeking to take the Foreign Service exam has dropped significantly from the rates seen during the previous two administrations. Attracting the right personnel will require Mr. Pompeo to work with Congress and take other steps to change obsolete rules that, for instance, discourage former State Department employees from returning, and require even experienced people to start at the bottom if they have not previously worked in government — denying our diplomatic corps the ability to draw on specialized expertise.)

NBC5
— ‘Political Hit Job’: Rauner Responds to Harold Gay Adoption Controversy – Mary Ann Ahern (DIERSEN: Ever-increasingly, to be a Democrat is a) to promote LGBTQ activity and b) to destroy those who do not promote LGBTQ activity.)
https://www.nbcchicago.com/blogs/ward-room/Political-Hit-Job-Rauner-Responds-to-Harold-Gay-Adoption-Controversy-476616963.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The recent controversy over what Erika Harold said while a contestant for the Miss Illinois pageant 18 years ago is a political hit job, Gov. Bruce Rauner said Monday. He said he still supports her candidacy for attorney general, but how do Rauner and his opponent Jeanne Ives stand on the issue of gay adoptions? “I’ve known Erika Harold for about five years,” Rauner said. “I have found her to be a person of great talent and integrity.” Harold has not released a public schedule since the NBC 5 report last week that when she competed in the pageant in 2000 and was asked if she had to choose to place a child in foster care with either a loving gay couple or a heterosexual couple who were known child abusers. Sources in the room that days said she selected the child abusers. “It’s a preposterous question and I know many loving, excellent parents who are gay couples–and that would be a good option,” Rauner said. Jeanie Ives responded to the question as well. “Nobody ever places any child in an abusive situation–period,” she said. The four sources with knowledge of the pageant, including a contestant who watched the videotaped interview, confirmed Harold’s response. Other officials have taken offense to the comment. “I know there are anti-gay people out there,” Democrat state Rep. Greg Harri said. “But the disturbing thing to me is that she would want a child to go into a family of abusers.” As for the state of the GOP race, while Rauner leads in the polls, Ives, who is fighting ads that link her to House Speaker Mike Madigan, believes she could score an upset. “We know the most motivated voters are the ones that are showing up at the poll,” she said. “And when that comes up–I’ll tell you what–that is real victory on March 20 for us.”)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Ives to have WTTW to herself tonight
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-daniel-biss-central-committee-20180313-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: With a week to go before the primary election, Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s primary opponent state Rep. Jeanne Ives is scheduled to get as much as 30 minutes on TV this evening. WTTW-Ch. 11’s “Chicago Tonight” has a forum for the GOP governor candidates scheduled for 7 p.m. A Rauner campaign spokesman confirms the governor isn’t attending, and a spokeswoman for the station says Ives will be interviewed alone if he doesn’t show. That likely leaves the January Rauner vs. Ives matchup before the Tribune Editorial Board as their only joint appearance of the campaign, when she voiced the frustrations of conservative Republicans disappointed in Rauner on abortion and taxes.)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-daniel-biss-central-committee-20180313-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Democratic governor candidate Daniel Biss is exploring ways to help insurgent candidates for the state party’s leadership committee and challenge House Speaker Michael Madigan’s chairmanship. A Biss aide said the state senator from Evanston has talked with campaign attorneys about what fundraising mechanism could be used to assist challengers to about a dozen members the Democratic State Central Committee. The 36-member panel elects the party chairman. It’s made up of one man and one woman from each of Illinois’ 18 congressional districts, and the seats are on the primary ballot. There were no details yet on whether any arrangement had been made. Madigan has been actively backing current committee members seeking re-election. Such a move would be a furtherance of Biss’ effort to support progressive causes in his bid to gain support for governor from the more liberal wing of the Democratic Party. On Tuesday, he is expected to add endorsements from Indivisible groups in the Lakeview neighborhood and Oak Park. The Indivisible groups were formed in the wake of President Donald Trump’s election. Over the weekend, rival candidate Chris Kennedy said he believed the Democratic Party establishment should welcome such groups into the party fold but said they had been rebuffed. “It’s great to see Chris Kennedy wants progressive groups involved in the state party, especially since those progressive groups have overwhelmingly endorsed Daniel Biss for governor,” said Biss spokesman Tom Elliott.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: n a chilly Sunday afternoon, 69 American Government students from Metea Valley High School and Waubonsie Valley High School turned out to join with the League of Women Voters Naperville to encourage voters to participate in the March 20 primary elections. Five Naperville precincts were identified as having some of the lowest voter turnout in terms of the number of registered voters, so students went door to door in those precincts to encourage people to vote. Students returned with feedback from residents, some of it positive, and some of it negative. Some of the negative comments included, “Voting is too much effort,” “All politicians are liars.” Positive feedback included, “Voting is a way to have an impact on society,” and “I vote because I want to see good things happen in my country.” One resident told students, “I like it when you’re not selling anything,” to which the students replied, “We’re only selling Democracy.” After the March 20 election, students and their teachers will review voter turnout numbers to see if they were able to positively affect voter turnout in the precincts they visited.)

http://www.dailyherald.com/news/20180312/why-dupage-democrats-may-ask-some-county-board-nominees-to-drop-out-of-race
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Elizabeth Chaplin, the only Democrat on the county board, said candidates have been aware of the strategy since last summer. While she didn’t sign the pledge, Chaplin said she likely will step aside if she’s not the top vote-getter among the three Democrats seeking her party’s nod for two District 2 seats. The challenge, she said, is that Republicans normally pull about 20,000 ballots in DuPage primaries while Democrats pull only 5,000. If those numbers hold this year — and there are indications they might based on the number of campaign signs and the number of DuPage politicians who marched in recent parades — the Democrats’ chances of winning any board seat will drop dramatically unless they focus their efforts on a smaller number of races. “We can have more candidates on the ballot and lose or fewer candidates on the ballot and have a better chance of winning,” Chaplin said. While the plan was known in Democratic circles, it didn’t gain much public attention until John Basco, one of three Democrats seeking two seats in District 3, posted it on social media. Basco said he originally agreed to step down if he finished second in the primary, but has since changed his mind.)

DUPAGE POLICY JOURNAL
— BEYOND DISGUSTING, BEYOND TRAGIC: Bill on medical marijuana use in schools moves to House floor – Angela Underwood
https://dupagepolicyjournal.com/stories/511359254-bill-on-medical-marijuana-use-in-schools-moves-to-house-floor
(FROM THE ARTICLE: “I remember how this went down the first time when we approved using marijuana products for epilepsy and I was in favor of it, and then the sponsor who is here today immediately changed all the rules in a floor amendment that didn’t go back to committee,” Rep. Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton) said, adding Lang was doing the same thing again. “Now we know what the intent is, and the intent is to eventually have school personnel be the ones who are administering this drug.” She called the bill a a “slippery slope,” though it was narrowly tailored to a child sitting before her at the witness panel with her parents. “We started with a four-year pilot program for medical marijuana, and we have made changes every single year since,” Ives said. “Now the concern quite frankly is that before you know it, it’s an edible not an oil, there are all sorts of other conditions and not just epilepsy and then it is administered by school nurses or other personnel.” Ives made it clear to the family that she will support the bill for them, but she “will be watching,” Lang for future changes in the bill that he may try to slip in. . .Prefacing his comments with the fact that he comes from the old school, Rep. John Cavaletto (R-Salem) remembers when marijuana had only a negative connotation before it was considered to be medically healing, however he still sees it as a problem. “I visited Colorado not too long ago and happened to be there for about five days and did walk from one restaurant back to my hotel every evening with my wife and I witnessed these people on the sidewalks, in the corner and on the grassy knolls are drugged out,” Cavaletto said. “That’s the side of marijuana I see.” He said he cannot seem to put it in his mind that of all the drugs now produced, medical marijuana is the only one that can control epileptic seizures for children, but his thoughts are countered by the parents that sat before him, making him reconsider the notion.)
— House panel backs bill making physicals for substitute teachers optional – Angela Underwood (DIERSEN: Democrats run the schools. Of course, if physicals are made optional, those Democrats will waive the requirement for Democrat applicants and impose the requirement on Republican applicants. Overwhelmingly, my superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates in the federal government who had serious health problems were Democrats.)
https://dupagepolicyjournal.com/stories/511359301-house-panel-backs-bill-making-physicals-for-substitute-teachers-optional
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Rep. Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton) brought up the irony of having unfit substitute teacher supervising a gym class. “Nobody says you have to hire them,” Sherer said. Sherer said the bill was about giving more rights back to local control. “I agree with that too; however you have issues here because once you leave it open to interpretation by the school district then you are absolutely opening it up for discrimination, because they forced someone to get a physical or they declined them because they felt like they were not physically fit enough for the position,” Ives said. “Then you put them (school districts) in a conundrum, you see.” Next comes workers’ compensation problems, Ive said, noting if a substitute gets injured doing an exercise they are not up for, the school district could become liable; however, Scherer said it is “about local control and it is as simple as that.” After Ives voted no and left the meeting, Rep. Robert Pritchard (R-Hinckley) sought clarification on the bill, asking if Sherer was looking to temporarily waive the licensing in an effort to get needed teachers sooner and was told no; he then asked if the “teachers association and management alliance” approved the bill. “There are no opponents,” Sherer said. Rep. David Olsen (R-Downers Grove) said he was confused. “Maybe I am the only confused one whether it is evidence of physical fitness or a physical where I go to my doctor and I get a physical,” Olsen said. Sherer said it is not about how many sit-ups a substitute can perform or times they can run around the block, it is a money issue, alleviating the ancillary educator from coming up with even more funds than necessary to be certified. “I respect the concerns Rep. Ives had about workers’ comp and such, but you are correct we do have a teacher shortage and I think we need to take some steps to address that shortage,” Olsen said. Rep. John Cavaletto (R-Salem) shared Ives’ apprehension. “I really don’t like that,” Cavaletto, adding though he understands the shortage, that should not be a reason to exclude some substitutes from mandates teachers themselves are required to follow. He then asked about the cost of a physical, which Sherer said could cost up to $400, but physical or not a substitute would have to be free of communicable disease. “How many of those are there I wonder,” Cavaletto said. Though he was not thrilled with the bill, Cavaletto said he would support the bill due to the teacher shortage. The panel approved HB4706 and the bill moved to the House floor.)
