http://www.dailyherald.com/discuss/20170528/how-to-restore-american-self-reliance
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Adolescents spending scores of hours a week on screen time with their devices acquire “a zombielike passivity” that saps their “agency.” This makes them susceptible to perpetual adolescence, and ill-suited to the velocity of life in an accelerating world of shorter job durations and the necessity of perpetual learning. In this world, Sasse warns, “college graduates will change not only jobs but industries an average of three times by age thirty.” Childhood obesity has increased 500 percent in five decades. For “the most medicated generation of youth in history,” sales of ADHD drugs have increased 8 percent a year since 2010. Research shows that teenage texters exhibit addictive, sleep-depriving behaviors akin to those of habit-denying addictive gamblers. Teenagers clutching their devices “are spending nearly two-thirds of their waking hours with their eyes tied down and bodies stationary.” Five million Americans, many of them low-skilled young men, play 45 hours of video games per week.)

SPRINGFIELD STATE JOURNAL REGISTER
— Say ‘no’ to Springfield casino – Anita Bedell, Executive Drector, Illinois Church Action on Alcohol & Addiction Problems
http://www.sj-r.com/opinion/20170527/letter-say-no-to-springfield-casino
(FROM THE LETTER: According to the State Journal-Register, a developer, who also is a lobbyist who owns video gambling parlors and a medical marijuana dispensary, wants to put a casino in downtown Springfield. A casino is different from other businesses because of the social problems and costs gambling creates. Gambling comes with high costs of addiction, bankruptcy, crime, family problems and suicide. Springfield has more video gambling machines than any place in Illinois. Area residents have lost over $100 million in the 576 gambling machines. In April, area residents gambled away over $2.5 million. Sangamon County has the equivalent of a casino with 1,027 gambling machines. Adding a casino will increase problems for individuals, families and the community. The poor, minorities and the addicted will especially be negatively impacted. Gambling interests overestimate the amount of revenue projected and don’t include any costs in the calculation. According to definitive academic studies, the socioeconomic costs of casinos are $3 or more for every $1 in benefit. Over 75 percent of the revenue at casinos comes from slot/video gambling machines like the ones already operating here. Fewer workers are required, and they have a higher rate of gambling addiction than the general population. Rep. Tim Butler has filed an amendment to include a Springfield casino in the massive gambling expansion bill the Senate passed. Transparency is needed for this important public policy issue, not working behind closed doors out of the public view. Call the mayor, city council, and state legislators to voice your concerns.)

— Big retirement payouts tiny part of big pension mess – BGA
http://www.sj-r.com/news/20170527/big-retirement-payouts-tiny-part-of-big-pension-mess
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois’ budget mess is the stepchild of Illinois’ pension mess, and nothing incites more steam-from-the-ears fury than the volume of six-figure annual retirement payouts — topped by one at $581,000 — pledged to former public workers. . .Just 4 percent of all beneficiaries this year are in line for pension paydays exceeding $100,000, with the biggest checks largely going to former school administrators as well as doctors and dentists at public teaching hospitals. Payments for the overwhelming majority of pensioners, most of whom don’t qualify for Social Security, are far more modest. The median pension in 2017 for retired suburban and downstate teachers stands at $52,016, the analysis shows, while the median for general state workers is $28,946. For university workers, the median pension stands at $26,101, while for non-public safety municipal workers outside of Chicago, it is $9,064.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— OUTRAGEOUS: DuPage committee to revisit ban on video gaming in unincorporated areas – Gary Gibula  (DIERSEN: Please join Kathy Gilroy, me, and others who will speak at the DuPage County Finance Committee meeting Tuesday, June 13, 2017, at 7:30 AM, in favor of keeping the ban on video gambling in unincorporated DuPage County.  If you are in DuPage County, please urge DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin, the 18 DuPage County Board members, and especially, the 3 board members who represent your district, to vote to keep the ban.  In 2009, the Milton Township Republican Central Committee (MTRCC) unanimously passed a resolution against video gambling throughout DuPage County.  Since then, no MTRCC member has done anything to rescind that resolution.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/naperville-sun/news/ct-nvs-dupage-video-gaming-revisited-st-0528-20170527-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: DuPage County Board committee will discuss the possible repeal of its 2009 ban on video gaming for businesses located in unincorporated areas. Board member Paul Fichtner told the board last week the matter will be discussed at the June 13 Finance Committee meeting. “It was the consensus of the committee to discuss this and perhaps make a decision at that same meeting three weeks from now,” Fichtner said. “Because of the nature of the topic and the interest it may bring, I’m suggesting we start at 7:30 a.m.”  Board member Jim Zay requested the committee address the matter. “Obviously, we’ve been getting emails and public comment (from people interested in the repeal), so I think it’s time to take another look at it,” Zay said. “I’m not saying we’re in favor of it or against it, but it’s time to listen to their concerns and see what’s going on. A lot of things have changed since 2009 with video gaming so I think it’s time for the board to give these people an opportunity to hear their concerns and look at it again.” Individuals both for and against video gaming have spoken at the last three county board meetings. Jeremy Truex, co-owner of a tavern located in an unincorporated part of Lombard, is among those who think the prohibition should be removed. “The county is missing out on some serious tax revenue,” Truex said. “You’ve got people going to other municipalities and spending their money, whereas they could be spending it in unincorporated DuPage County with all its small businesses.” Will County, which does allow video gaming in unincorporated areas, collected $198,915 in tax distributions in 2016 from the 27 establishments licensed for video gaming, according to the Illinois Gaming Board. In Kane County, 12 such businesses earned $134,694 in tax distributions last year, and 61 businesses with video gaming earned $623,636 for Lake County over the same 12-month period, state numbers show. Some counties, like Cook, do not permit video gaming in unincorporated areas. Will County instituted a ban on any new licenses in April 2015, citing loopholes and liberal state regulations that permit video gaming in unexpected places like gas stations. The 31 Aurora businesses with licenses for video gaming include restaurants, pubs, private social clubs and fraternal organizations such as Amvets and a Moose lodge. The city of Aurora took in $332,045 in tax distributions from those establishments in 2016. Naperville adopted a city-wide ban on video gaming in October 2009. In an email statement, Naperville communications manager Linda LaCloche affirmed Wednesday, “the city of Naperville continues to support our decision to opt out of the Illinois Video Gaming Act.” While video gaming has earned nearly $171 million in tax distributions for counties and municipalities since 2012, some critics say the activity erodes the amount of money gamblers spend at casinos and boats, where it is permitted. In its ordinance prohibiting video gaming, Naperville cited the activity as being inconsistent with family values, being associated with corruption and enticing players to game faster for longer periods of time and at higher rates of wagering, according to a study by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. At a previous DuPage County Board meeting, Villa Park resident Kathy Gilroy asserted that the board “had no duty to level the playing field. This board has a duty to the welfare of county residents.” Zay and Jim Healy were on the board eight years ago when the video gaming ban was instituted. “I don’t think attitudes have changed very much since 2009,” Healy said. “Obviously, we’ll wait to hear what people have to say. At this moment, nothing has changed in my mind.” The Finance Committee will meet at 7:30am on June 13 in the County Board Room of the Jack T. Knuepfer Administration Building, 421 North County Farm Road, in Wheaton.)

— After the Confederates, Who’s Next? – Patrick J. Buchanan
http://www.gopusa.com/?p=24928
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Behind this remorseless drive to blast the greatest names from America’s past off public buildings, and to tear down their statues and monuments, is an egalitarian extremism rooted in envy and hate. Among its core convictions is that spreading Christianity was a cover story for rapacious Europeans who, after discovering America, came in masses to dispossess and exterminate native peoples. “The white race,” wrote Susan Sontag, “is the cancer of human history.” Today, the men we were taught to revere as the great captains, explorers, missionaries and nation-builders are seen by many as part of a racist, imperialist, genocidal enterprise, wicked men who betrayed and eradicated the peace-loving natives who had welcomed them. What they blindly refuse to see is that while its sins are scarlet, as are those of all civilizations, it is the achievements of the West that are unrivaled. The West ended slavery. Christianity and the West gave birth to the idea of inalienable human rights. As scholar Charles Murray has written, 97 percent of the world’s most significant figures and 97 percent of the world’s greatest achievements in the arts, architecture, literature, astrology, biology, earth sciences, physics, medicine, mathematics and technology came from the West. What is disheartening is not that there are haters of our civilization out there, but that there seem to be fewer defenders. Of these icon-smashers it may be said: Like ISIS and Boko Haram, they can tear down statues, but these people could never build a country. What happens, one wonders, when these Philistines discover that the seated figure in the statue, right in front of D.C.’s Union Station, is the High Admiral of the Ocean Sea, Christopher Columbus?)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Conservative radio host Mark Levin proposed Fox News’ Sean Hannity should look into suing Media Matters for how the progressive organization has gone after his show and audience. “If I were Sean Hannity … I would give very serious consideration to suing Media Matters, its board, and its officers, as well as any other entity involved in the organized effort to boycott his TV show, including media outlets contacting his advertisers in a thinly veiled boycott tactic, for the purposeful tortious interference with his employment contract with Fox News and his business relationships with his various advertisers,” Levin wrote in a Facebook post Thursday. On Tuesday, Hannity told viewers that there is an effort to “silence” him from making certain comments on air. “As for my job here at the Fox News Channel — there is an effort now abound to silence me,” Hannity said. “That is what we have called on this program as liberal fascism. Attack, boycott, all in an effort to silence conservatives. I serve at the pleasure of the Fox News Channel. I’m here to do my job every night.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: When Michael Savini came to Wall Street in 2006, banks and brokers had stocked their annual recruiting classes with a preponderance of new hires who shared at least one thing in common: They’d played college sports. In New York and Chicago, trading floors teemed with former football and lacrosse stars, as well as veterans of college hockey, wrestling, tennis and crew teams. Some ex-athletes, including former investment bank CEOs John Mack, Henry Paulson and Alan Schwartz, made it to the executive suite. Many others looked favorably on younger versions of themselves, building networks that drew athletes, typically male, from their alma maters. Ex-jocks had the right stomach for risk-taking, the theory went, and the ideal temperament to win clients’ trust and business. “You saw a lot of big guys” in Chicago’s trading pits, said Bernard McSherry, dean of the New Jersey City University’s business school, who spent many years on the floor of the NYSE. “Those were physical jobs. http://www.dailyherald.com/news/20170525/dupage-county-to-revisit-video-gambling-ban
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Amid calls for a repeal of DuPage’s ban on video gambling machines, county board members are going to revisit the issue. Officials in recent months have heard from businesses and a Veterans of Foreign Wars post that would like to offer video gambling. But they’ve also heard from gambling opponents who want to keep the moratorium that affects more than two dozen bars, restaurants, golf courses and social clubs in unincorporated parts of the county. In response, board members have agreed to discuss video gambling during their finance committee meeting scheduled for June 13. “We have people asking us to look at it,” county board member Jim Zay said. “So we need to have a discussion. We should at least give these people the opportunity to present their case for why we should change it. And we should give opponents the opportunity to say why they’re still against it.” Illinois legalized video gambling in 2009, but towns and counties were able to opt out. DuPage enacted its ban in August 2009 after officials cited possible social problems. County board member Paul Fichtner, who serves as chairman of the board’s finance committee, said the outcome of next month’s discussion will determine whether a measure is drafted to lift the prohibition. “We’re going to give everybody an opportunity to speak to the issue,” Fichtner said. If the panel recommends repealing the ban, it still would require a final vote by the full county board. Fichtner said he doesn’t know if there’s enough support on the board to pursue a repeal. “It’s going to be close,” he said. If the ban is lifted, county officials estimate that around 28 liquor license holders might be eligible to apply for a video gambling license. The county would gain between $200,000 and $250,000 a year in revenue, according to one estimate. Counties and towns that allow video gambling receive 5 percent of each machine’s profit. While towns throughout DuPage initially enacted bans, a number have since changed their minds. DuPage towns that allow video gambling are Addison, Aurora, Bensenville, Bloomingdale, Carol Stream, Darien, Glendale Heights, Itasca, Oakbrook Terrace, Roselle, Villa Park, Westmont, Willowbrook, Wood Dale and Woodridge, according to the Illinois Gaming Board. Some bars owners in unincorporated areas say they’ve lost customers to establishments where video gambling is allowed. But anti-gambling advocates say it’s not the county board’s responsibility to level the playing field for bars.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— OUTSTANDING: Drug addiction treatment center hosts talk opposing legalized pot – Diane Moca
http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/naperville-sun/ct-nvs-recreational-marijuana-forum-edward-st-0526-20170525-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: former presidential advisor shared his fears about the effects of marijuana legalization during a lecture Thursday at Linden Oaks Naperville Outpatient Center. “People have to stand up to this industry,” said Kevin Sabet, an assistant professor who served as a senior advisor to President Barack Obama’s drug control director and worked in the Clinton and Bush administrations. “It’s about getting health care voices involved. We need more partners at the table. Right now this industry is getting away with murder.” Sabet shared slides, statistics and anecdotes to support his premise that legalized recreational marijuana in Alaska, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada, Oregon, Washington and Washington, D.C., is a lucrative industry that’s misleading the public about pot’s risks and benefits. “We learned the hard way about tobacco, which caused tens of millions of needless deaths,” said Sabet, who founded the nonprofit SAM, or Smart Approaches to Marijuana, in 2013. His organization’s goal, according to its website, is to prevent “another Big Tobacco (by) stopping marijuana legalization and commercialization, educating policy-makers and the public on marijuana issues, and fundraising.” Sabet said marijuana use causes respiratory problems, results in low birth weight babies and can impair learning with permanent IQ loss when consumed in large quantities by someone who’s young, according to the National Academy of Sciences. While he acknowledged that marijuana can eliminate nausea for those fighting cancer or other illnesses, he but did not mention other benefits commonly cited by medical advocates, such as reducing pain and seizures. “The medical marijuana industry is already making a lot of money here” in Illinois, he said. “It’s all about the money.” In the past four years, Illinois has legalized cannabis for medical use and decriminalized recreational use. In March 2017, state lawmakers proposed a measure legalizing recreational marijuana that could be voted on next year. Proponents estimate marijuana could generate between $350 million and $700 million in annual sales, reaping a sales tax windfall for the state. “We’re looking at one side of the ledger. People are not counting the costs,” said Sabet, who presented statistics on health care costs from pot-related illnesses. Marijuana advocates counter that legalization would save money on enforcement and boost opportunities for minority youth. An NAACP report from 2015 said marijuana arrests account for more than half of all drug arrests in the country, with blacks being six times more likely than whites to be arrested for pot possession, making it harder for them to obtain student loans and jobs. Dawn Neylon said she plans to share Sabet’s message with the middle and high school students with whom she works at 360 Youth Services, a Naperville nonprofit prevention program. “We’re learning new ways to give them information to make healthy choices. Alcohol and tobacco use is down dramatically (in Naperville school districts 203 and 204). There’s not much change in marijuana use.” In recent years, teenagers’ perceptions of marijuana have changed and she is seeing a decrease in their belief that pot poses a risk, Neylong said. “That’s concerning. When there’s a decreased sense of harm, there’s a greater risk to use it,” she said. Based on her interactions with teens, she said Naperville parents should be just as concerned about “a little weed” or “a little beer” as they are about opiates because “the earlier they start to use (alcohol or marijuana), the more likely they are to abuse. We want to push the first age of use to help prevent challenges later in life.” Sabet said a 2013 study from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services showed marijuana can lead to other drugs for some people. “A majority of people who try pot stop using it after three times or less,” he said. “Three to four percent of the time they will try other drugs. More than ninety percent of people using heroin say marijuana or alcohol were drugs of choice before.”)

https://townhall.com/tipsheet/guybenson/2017/05/19/study-do-journalists-brains-function-at-a-lower-level-than-average-people-n2329307
(FROM THE ARTICLE: According to a study released Thursday by neuroscientist Dr. Tara Swart in association with the London Press Club, the highest functions of the human brain operate at a lower level in journalists than the average population. Her research titled “Study Into The Mental Resilience of Journalists,” blames journalists’ cognitive shortcomings on dehydration caused by excessive alcohol consumption along with poor diet, including higher levels of sugar and caffeine. Less than 5% of journalists drink enough — or any — water while 41% drank more than 18 alcoholic drinks per week.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Despite donating $2.5 million to Liberty Principles PAC, Governor Bruce Rauner denies he has any knowledge of a controversial, privately-funded newspaper organization run by the same political operative. Dan Proft is a conservative radio talk show host who runs the Liberty Principles super PAC. Proft also launched a private news publishing group, which is not required to disclose it’s donor or “investor” list. Last week, Democrats accused Proft’s ‘Local Government Information Services’ of spreading “fake news” in an alleged plot to sabotage the effort to alter the education funding formula. I got full-time federal service credit while I worked only part-time for the Park Forest Post Office 1966-1969. Because he was so furious about that, he got Congress to change the law so that part-time federal work is now prorated. If I had not been grandfathered in, that law change would have cost me about 1 1/2 years of federal service credit.)
http://edgarcountywatchdogs.com/2017/05/bill-introduced-to-change-public-officer-prohibited-activities-act-after-dupage-official-outed/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Like previous violations of law by public officials in DuPage and other counties, instead of following the law, they simply get the law changed – which is their right to try and accomplish, but it sets a bad precedent for Illinois public officials – one that essentially breeds corruption by demonstrating that laws do not matter. Previous changes have been to pass a Bill concerning the election code, and backdate its effective date to allow extended times for publication of referendum. Another was to change the township code to authorize giving away mulch and delivering it onto private property. And changing the way drug funds must be utilized, after writing about a rogue State’s Attorney who chose to spend it outside what the current law allowed. If this is what we have come to in Illinois, someone should tell us exactly which laws are to be followed, and which ones can be safely ignored. Anything short of that, “Break the Law Change the Law” will become our State motto.)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-sean-hannity-sponsors-20170524-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: On Wednesday, Hannity sent a steady stream of tweets that targeted Media Matters for America, the liberal lobbyists who a day earlier had posted a list of his show’s advertisers on its web site. Targeting a show’s advertisers is a potent line of attack in television; the swift abandonment of Bill O’Reilly’s advertisers last month after the revelation of settlements paid to women to quiet harassment charges was widely considered a factor in his firing by Fox. Media Matters is “targeting my advertisers to silence my voice,” Hannity tweeted. “They hope to get me fired. Rush (Limbaugh), O’Reilly, (Glenn) Beck, (Don) Imus and now me.” He posted a series of links to articles about Media Matters’ funding, and ties to figures reviled by many conservatives, like George Soros and Bill Clinton. Media Matters denied that it was mounting a pressure campaign focusing on Hannity’s advertisers. The organization’s president Angelo Carusone said he hadn’t spoken to any sponsors. He said he wanted advertisers to be aware of Hannity’s “volatility” as part of a general Media Matters campaign to get them to think about advertising on Fox; Media Matters hasn’t posted a list of sponsors for any other specific show. Saying there’s no boycott campaign may be a distinction without a difference, however. Media Matters listed on its website more than 150 companies that had run commercials on “Hannity” in May, ranging from Lexus to Reddi-wip to Comedy Central. Hannity tweeted Wednesday that he’d spoken to several of his advertisers and they said they’d been “inundated” with emails urging them to stop running commercials on his show. Cars.com said in a statement that its decision to advertise on a show doesn’t mean it agrees or disagrees with its content. “We don’t have the ability to influence content at the time we make our advertising purchase,” the company said. “In this case, we’ve been watching closely and have recently made the decision to pull our advertising from Hannity.” The company did not make clear when it made that decision or what about Hannity’s content influenced its executives. A company representative did not immediately return a call seeking comment. By alerting his supporters about the list of advertisers, Hannity has played into his critics’ hands, Carusone said. “He has demonstrated that he’s totally volatile and out of control,” he said. “Hannity has done more to create pressure for his advertisers than I have.” Carusone suggested that Hannity is “acting out of fear and anxiety over the future of Fox News by preying on the fears and anxieties of his audience.” “We’re not running a campaign to get him fired right now,” he said.)

— What is the “tax gap” the White House wants to shrink? – KATHRYN WATSON  (DIERSEN: I worked for IRS for almost 9 years, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $79,563-$90,173.  I worked for GAO on audits of IRS’s Criminal Investigation Division for 3 years at the GS-13 Step 1-3 levels, currently $94,610-$100,917.)
http://www.cbsnews.com/news/what-is-the-tax-gap-the-white-house-wants-to-close/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The tax gap, simply put, is the amount in taxes individuals and companies owe the government, but that the government never receives. There are three reasons for that gap –some fail to pay any taxes, others underreport income, and yet others underpay their taxes, according to the IRS. Mulvaney said the president’s proposed tax plan doesn’t include an expectation that the gap will close, but pointed out how shrinking it would help the proposed $4 trillion budget. The tax gap in 2016 was $486 billion — out of the expected revenue from income and corporate taxes of roughly $1.9 trillion. . .However, Mulvaney’s hopes of closing or even significantly shrinking the tax gap may be a stretch. The tax gap has remained relatively stable during the last decade, with the majority of the gap stemming from individual, rather than corporate, tax, shortages. The total tax gap was $450 billion in 2006, and the total tax compliance rate was 83 percent, according to the Government Accountability Office. The Obama administration made attempts to close the gap by stepping up enforcement, but probably only reduced it by $50 billion to $100 billion over a decade, said Marc Goldwein, senior vice president and senior policy director at the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget. . .GAO, which analyzed the tax gap problem in 2012, pointed out that simplifying the tax code is only one way to help close the gap. GAO said the IRS also needs to improve customer service lines for taxpayers, devote additional resources to enforcement, expand compliance checks before issuing refunds and modernize information systems, among other things, to address the gap.)

— Chinese Student in Maryland Is Criticized at Home for Praising U.S. – MIKE IVES  (DIERSEN: Overwhelmingly, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes promote China.)
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/23/world/asia/chinese-student-fresh-air-yang-shuping.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE:  Speaking at the University of Maryland, Yang Shuping, a graduating senior from China, sprinkled her upbeat commencement speech with observations that drew warm applause: The air was far cleaner in the United States than in China, she said, and she could openly discuss racism, sexism and politics in ways that she had never before dreamed possible. Growing up in China, “I was convinced that only authorities owned the narrative,” Ms. Yang, a theater and psychology major from the southern city of Kunming, told the crowd in a basketball arena in College Park, Md. “Only authorities could define the truth.” The speech on Sunday drew harsh criticism, however, from some of Ms. Yang’s Chinese classmates in Maryland and from legions of social media users in China, many of whom accused her of selling out her homeland. Even the city of Kunming weighed in, saying in a message on Weibo, China’s Twitter-like platform, that her comments about the city’s air pollution were “not related to us.”)

WALL STREET JOURNAL
— HARDCOPY ARTICLE TITLE: Teens Miss Out on Summer Jobs  A struggling retail sector isn’t the employer it once was, plus, teenagers themselves are forgoing work. – Imani Moise  (DIERSEN: What summer jobs did you have and what did you do with the money that you earned?  I did yard work and delivered newspapers during the summers of 1962, 1963, and 1964; I washed dishes during the summer of 1965; I cleaned golf shoes, chipped slag, and pumped gasoline during the summer of 1966; and I delivered mail during the summers of 1967, 1968, and 1969.  I used the money that I earned to buy a 1958 Chevy BelAir in 1964, a new 1966 Pontiac Tempest Sprint in 1966, a new 1968 Oldsmobile 442 in 1967, and a new 1969 Dodge Charger SE in 1967.  I used the money that I earned to pay for my UIC and NIU college expenses.)
https://www.wsj.com/articles/mall-troubles-threaten-a-rite-of-passage-the-teen-job-1495540801
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Though the numbers of working teens has risen slightly in the last few years, overall teen employment has steadily declined for nearly 40 years, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The rate of teen participation in the labor force during the month of July peaked in 1978 at 72%, falling to 43% last year. The BLS links the decline to increased enrollment in summer school and heightened emphasis on extracurricular activities. In the bureau’s most recent survey, less than 9% of teens who didn’t have a job said they were interested in finding one. The trend is setting off alarm bells for many who believe that teens are missing out on opportunities to learn the soft skills needed for their adult careers. Hoping to save up money for a car, Danei Wesley applied for summer jobs at Wal-Mart, Forever 21 and Charlotte Russe stores near her hometown of Gary, Ind. The 18-year-old, a rising sophomore at Indiana University Bloomington, followed up on each of her applications online, by phone or even in person, but was told in each case the position was already filled. Looking closer to home has proven successful for Ms. Wesley. A member of her church offered her a job for $8 an hour at an Italian-ice store, and not long after, she found another job through the father of a cheer-squad teammate, tutoring children in math and science for $9 an hour. Large employers often assume teens lack the punctuality and professionalism needed on the job, said Nancy Snyder, chief executive of Commonwealth Corp., a Massachusetts-based nonprofit that helps find employment for teens. Ms. Snyder recommends that young job seekers follow Ms. Wesley’s lead and try grocery stores or local mom-and-pop stores.)

— Paid parental leave great for families – Editorial  (DIERSEN: Democrats are nasty moral relativists who believe that their end justifies their means. They are nasty disciples of Saul Alinsky. To promote hatred against my wife and I, my Democrat GAO superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates viciously demonized us, viciously denigrated us, and viciously condemned us as being filthy rich DINKs (dual income, no kids) because we gave up trying to have children, because we did not adopt, and because we did not become foster parents.  They stressed that Money Magazine reported in its February, 1978 issue that we planned to have children. They stressed that I had not volunteered for travel assignments because we were trying to have children. In 1989, they used the aforesaid to punish me a) by throwing me off audits of IRS, b) by assigning me to a 6-month travel assignment that many of my coworkers wanted and were better qualified to take, c) by giving me an extremely unfair performance appraisal, and d) by ranked me at the bottom of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes. (FROM THE ARTICLE: A freelancer for the Associated Press has drawn the ire of the GOP in New Hampshire after working her way into a “closed press” fundraiser last week and then falsely reporting on the event–all after it turns out that the so-called “reporter” is actually a hardcore leftwing activist. Following the fundraiser, the Associated Press published a short story without a byline that was “grossly inaccurate,” NHGOP adviser Patrick Hynes told local television outlet WMUR-9. “President Donald Trump’s counselor Kellyanne Conway has told supporters in New Hampshire they should ‘just ignore’ his critics and the incessant chatter about the scandals dogging him,” the “reporter,” later learned to be Melanie Plenda, wrote for the AP. The report also said about 150 attended, and attendees were “largely friendly” to Conway, but “some people in attendance withheld applause when Conway let loose with snarky comments about Democrat Hillary Clinton.” “The Associated Press in New Hampshire appears to be engaged in leftwing activism rather than journalism,” Hynes told Breitbart News. “And Melanie Plenda is a leftwing activist not a journalist.” “They conspired to sneak this leftwing activist into an event for which they were not credentialed and deliberately misreported on the attendance and the enthusiasm with which Kellyanne Conway was greeted,” Hynes said. “Republicans across the country should be aware that the AP cannot be trusted to be fair and balanced,” Hynes said. Breitbart News has obtained a screenshot of Plenda’s Facebook page from Nov. 10, 2016–just days after Donald Trump won the presidential election–that shows her making an explicit call to action against the then-incoming Trump administration.)

https://www.bloomberg.com/politics/articles/2017-05-23/trump-seeks-3-6-trillion-in-spending-cuts-to-reshape-government
(FROM THE ARTICLE: President Donald Trump made an impassioned plea for support from minority voters during his election campaign by asking them, “What do you have to lose?” On Tuesday, they got an answer, as did many of the rural, poor and working-class voters who propelled him into office. In his fiscal 2018 budget proposal, Trump asked Congress for $3.6 trillion in spending cuts that would mean steep reductions in food stamps, Medicaid health insurance payments, disability benefits, low-income housing assistance and block grants that fund meals-on-wheels for the elderly. The plan found little favor in Congress, even among Republican lawmakers from districts and states that gave Trump wide margins in the November election, and it had Democrats talking about a deal on spending that would exclude the White House.)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-illinois-middle-class-0523-biz-20170522-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Meantime, Illinois’ median household income among the middle class has grown very modestly over that period, to $80,800 in 2015 from $79,300 in 1980, adjusting for inflation. But high-income households have seen their median income jump 14.5 percent, to $192,900 from $168,500. The median pay for low-income households has barely budged, to $26,100 from $25,800. . . Measuring the middle class is challenging, the report said, in part because it isn’t clear how to define it given associations with education and occupation type. The report’s analysis measured middle class by income level, adjusted for household size. So households earning more than two-thirds of the state’s median income and less than double the state’s median income — between $43,000 and $130,000 — are considered middle class.)

While a spokesman didn’t reveal exactly how many positions are being sought, he said Chicago is hoping to get hundreds of applicants. The bureau didn’t provide a breakdown of agents by race or gender, but acknowledged: “The diversity numbers of the FBI are not where we want them to be, unfortunately, but we have made it our highest priority to change that over the next few years.” Chicago agents start at around $71,000, with salaries rising to $110,000 over five years, a spokesman said.)

— GOP seeks recruits to oppose Mendoza, Madigan  GOP searching for ‘electable’ candidates – Mark Maxwell (DIERSEN: Political parties exist to help elect candidates who can and will defend and advance their platform. According to my critics/opponents, a) the Republican Party platform is the problem, b) the more planks in that platform that a candidate supports, the less likely that they will win, and c) to win, candidates should stress those planks that they reject.  My critics especially want candidates who reject the immigration, traditional family, right to life, illegal drugs, gambling, and Second Amendment planks.  They especially want candidates who hate Trump.  They especially want candidates who are minority, female, and/or younger.)
http://www.illinoishomepage.net/news/local-news/gop-seeks-recruits-to-oppose-mendoza-madigan/719204123
(FROM THE ARTICLE:  Governor Bruce Rauner and his inner circle of political advisors are holding private meetings to vet candidates they hope could unseat Comptroller Susana Mendoza and Attorney General Lisa Madigan in the 2018 election. Democrats running to unseat Rauner have garnered most of the public attention to date, but behind closed doors, Republicans are already forming a deep roster and consulting with top party donors before making any public commitments to back candidates. The secretive casting calls are starting to creating tension within the party as leaders mull over their next move. According to sources with knowledge of these discussions, Rauner’s chief political strategist Mike Zolnierowicz is actively recruiting and meeting with candidates who may show potential to upstage some of the governor’s political rivals in a statewide election. By all accounts, these conversations remain in the very early stages, and several of the candidates themselves remain uncertain about their own standing with the party leadership. Former Comptroller Leslie Munger is rumored to be angling for a chance to regain her seat in 2018, but party leaders have privately expressed concerns about her electability after losing a rough election last fall. Although he did not respond to requests for comment, Zolnierowicz continues to explore other options for the high stakes Comptroller race. After losing to Mendoza last November, Munger was awarded a pay raise to a salary of $138,000 as one of two deputy governors in the Rauner administration. When asked about her plans to run for reelection, she replied, “No comment.” Republicans openly admit they are gearing up for a broader campaign to overtake a majority in the House, which would effectively demote reigning Speaker Michael Madigan. The party would need to pick up 9 seats to unseat Madigan. It only managed to gain 4 seats during the 2016 election, narrowly escaping the Democratic supermajority. Representative Tim Butler (R-Springfield) acknowledges unseating Madigan is a long shot, but he contends Democrats have several vulnerable candidates in districts where he believes the GOP can compete. Defeating Madigan’s daughter may prove to be the tougher task. Zolnierowicz, who left his post as Rauner’s chief of staff to become the party’s top strategist last summer, is said to have come down to a short list of candidates to oppose Madigan, yet concerns about name recognition and credentials prolong the decision. Rauner’s campaign communications director Kirsten Kukowski and Illinois GOP spokesmen Steven Yaffe and Aaron DeGroot declined to comment for this article.)

(FROM THE POSTING: Student loan debt is now a $1.3-trillion problem burdening 44 million borrowers. Experts are talking about the effects of student debt on the economy, but they aren’t talking about its disproportionate effects on women. AAUW takes a close look at that oversight in the new research report Deeper in Debt: Women and Student Loans. Women’s success in postsecondary education is shrinking the gender pay gap and opening up opportunities, but at what price? Women not only take on more student debt than men do, but women also pay back their loans more slowly because of the gender pay gap. While higher education is seen as a path to financial stability, taking on student debt is a gamble, and it’s a bigger risk for some women: Low-income students, students with dependent children, and students who drop out of college are all at higher risk of defaulting on student loans. AAUW advocates for grants, programs, and resources that can keep college accessible for those who have the most to gain.)
