(FROM THE ARTICLE: “Keep poking social conservatives in the eye Bruce,” tweeted David E. Smith, executive director of the Illinois Family Institute. “You are doing a yeoman’s job of alienating the base.” The Rauners are personal friends of the couple, who are political supporters of the governor, according to an attendee at the wedding. Rauner campaigned as a social moderate, and has said he has no social agenda. But he’s been forced to address several key issues during his first-term — signing a controversial measure that expanded taxpayer-funding of abortion and worked to protect abortions in Illinois should the Supreme Court overturn Roe. v. Wade. He also signed a measure that allowed transgender people to change the sex listed on their birth certificates. Those were among some of the issues that led state Rep. Jeanne Ives, R-Wheaton, to run against Rauner in the March primary, with the governor winning by just 3 points. Many conservative Republicans called the signing of the abortion bill a betrayal. But Rauner denied the claim that earned him the nickname of “Benedict Rauner” and the label of RINO — Republican in name only. Illinois Review, a news source for conservatives, first reported on Rauner at the wedding and the potential conservative backlash. The governor’s office declined comment on the wedding. Less than four years ago, Equality Illinois accused Rauner of ducking social issues that turned some voters off. Just months before the 2014 election, Rauner sent former Illinois GOP Party Chairman Pat Brady to the Pride Parade in Chicago in his place. Gay rights activists supported Democrat Pat Quinn in the race. They campaigned against Rauner, hanging a banner along the parade route, bearing Rauner’s face and his quote on marriage quality: “If I were governor, I would veto it.” Brady stepped down from his post after angering social conservatives when he took a stand in favor of same sex marriage. During the campaign Rauner declined to say whether he supported it. And while he said he had no plans to overturn the same-sex law, he also said if it had landed on his desk as governor he would have vetoed it because voters should have decided the issue. Rauner met with gay rights advocates soon after taking office, telling them he’d direct state agencies to enforce anti-discrimination laws. “I said four years ago, and it’s always been true,” he told the Chicago Sun-Times while campaigning in the final week before the March primary. “I support a woman’s right to decide. I don’t focus on social issues, never have. I’m focused on what unites us: lower taxes, more jobs, ending corruption, and term limits.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen stripped his fellow officials of any chance of embarrassing him with a second vote to deny reimbursement of personal business expenses by ripping up what appeared to be a check for $149.07 in front of the board Tuesday. Lauzen then accused the board members who rejected his payment of collecting a $25,000 annual paycheck without performing any meaningful public service to justify it. The drama marked the latest sign of an increasingly fractured relationship Lauzen has with many board members. Less than a week ago, he spoke with confidence about a second vote approving his reimbursement request. That vote became necessary after an opinion from State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said Lauzen cast an improper vote to break a 10-10 tie on the reimbursement last month. Lauzen began his speech Tuesday with a highlight reel of accomplishments during his tenure. Those include extending a property tax levy freeze in place since the year before he took office through the 2016 budget year. Also mentioned were a 65 percent reduction in county debt and the coming completion of projects, such as the Longmeadow Parkway and the cross-country course at the former Settlers Hill Landfill. Given those results, Lauzen said, he expected to be “given even more latitude to produce even more good.” Instead, the reimbursement denial comes as more “destructive nitpicking” to stand in the way of progress, Lauzen said. Turning over his plans to create new, nontax income for the county with a waste-to-fuel facility, expansion of the county’s fiber optic network leasing, and promoting the use of county infrastructure for cellphone amplification has gone nowhere, he said. “I would ask you to examine your public service you produced for your $25,000 salary,” Lauzen said. “What positive contribution are you making? What progress has been made? I’ll void the check and not accept it, and then we’re going to be finished with the stuff.” Lauzen then shredded what appeared to be the reimbursement check.)

If confirmed, Kavanaugh, 53, will become one of the most powerful and influential people in government for what could be decades, and he’ll lock in a healthy six-figure salary, too. Kavanaugh currently serves on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, where judges make $220,600 a year, according to the U.S. Courts website. Associate justices on the Supreme Court make $255,300, while the Chief Justice, currently John Roberts, makes $267,000. These salaries usually increase by $2,000-$3,000 each year. A seat on the court comes with some desirable benefits. Federal judges have the option to enroll in insurance plans through the Federal Employee Health Benefits system, whose website claims it offers “the widest selection of health plans in the country.” And justices can look forward to a generous retirement package. If they retire at 70 after serving 10 years, or at 65 after serving 15 years, they qualify for an annual pension equal to their highest full salary. There is also a summer break when court isn’t in session between July and October. It’s not exactly a vacation, as justices use the summer to prepare for cases scheduled for the fall, but it is when they do most of their traveling, much of which is subsidized, and when they lecture and teach for extra pay. An “invader,” as defined by Merriam Webster, is one who “trespasses, encroaches, and infringes upon another’s property.” The United States is our collective home and those who come here without seeking and gaining permission to enter our collective home are no different than an uninvited guest who enters our personal home to take up residence without permission. As a legal immigrant brought to the United States from Germany at a young age by my parents, I and many legal immigrants who waited sometimes years to obtain the necessary visa for entry resent those who merely walk across our border and claim to be “immigrants.” An immigrant is one who seeks and gains approval to enter, while invaders disrespect our laws put in place by “We the people.” Currently the Democratic Party, under the leadership of Tom Perez, a Marxist, and Keith Ellison, a Muslim Brotherhood operative, have been campaigning for open borders. They have resisted President Trump’s border enforcement, and many others are now calling for the abolishment of ICE (Immigration Custom Enforcement). One only has to look at crime statistics committed by illegals to see a glimpse of what a borderless United States holds for us. The Daily Wire reported that 92 percent of confirmed aliens in Federal Bureau of Prisons custody are illegals and that 97 percent of confirmed aliens in the U.S. Marshal Service custody are illegals. Furthermore, 21 percent of those convicted of non-immigration crimes were non-citizens and 2.5 times their share of the population. The Government Accountability Office reported in 2011 that there were 251,000 criminal aliens in federal, state, and local prisons. Those aliens represented nearly three million criminal offenses, which ranged from homicide and kidnappings to drugs, burglary, and larceny. These criminal offenses would not have occurred here had these criminals been prevented from gaining a foothold into our home and thousands of lives would not have been lost.)

It’s what Justice Samuel Alito described as Illinois’ “generous public-employee retirement packages” when writing for the majority in the Janus v. AFSCME decision. Alito didn’t use this graphic but he could have, because it makes his point. In 1987, pension promises made to active workers and retirees in the state’s five state-run pension plans totaled just $18 billion. By 2016, they had ballooned to $208 billion. That’s a cumulative 1,067 percent increase. Contrast that to the state’s budget (general fund revenues) which was up just 236 percent over the same time period. Or household incomes, which were up just 127 percent. Or inflation, up just 111 percent. (FROM THE ARTICLE: A letter which demands that Maine Township Republican Committeeman Char Foss-Eggemann of Park Ridge call for the resignation of Township Trustee Dave Carrabotta because of allegations that he inappropriately touched fellow Trustee Kim Jones, has not yet been sent to Eggemann. However, according to some people knowledgeable about the letter, it will soon be mailed to the committeeman as well as Cook County Republican Party leader Sean Morrison, state GOP leader Tim Schneider, and others. Meanwhile, an investigation into the sexual harassment claims by Jones, launched by the town board after May 22 when the charges first surfaced, will take another week and a half to complete, said township Supervisor Laura Morask. She indicated that one more person has to be interviewed by the lawyer assigned to perform the probe. Morask would not comment further. The letter insisting that Eggemann act on the matter was prompted in part by some Republicans demanding that House Speaker Mike Madigan step down because of harassment and bullying complaints leveled against several Democrats. Marilyn Smolenski, Republican candidate who’s running against incumbent Democrat Marty Moylan in the November General Election, has been one of those voices demanding Madigan’s resignation. She has been highly critical of Moylan for not standing up to Madigan by demanding that he resign. Eggemann is a strong supporter of Smolenski, who lives in Park Ridge. Moylan recently blasted Smolenski for backing “one of the biggest perverts in the U.S., Trump.” Added Moylan, “He’s one of the biggest pigs in the U.S. I’m not silent. Tell that Trump backing pistol packing Trump supporter that I back women’s rights and I voted for the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA).” Smolenski owns a company that sells pistol holders for women. On the advice of the township attorney, Jones confronted Carrabotta with her accusations of inappropriately touching her backside on May 22. Carrabotta flatly denied the allegations and demanded an immediate closed door meeting where the issue could be discussed. Jones accuses Carrabotta of touching her on three separate occasions during township events in late 2017 and 2018. According to people familiar with the letter, it’s believed that at least 10 local Republican women will sign it by the time it is mailed to Eggemann. Among the words used in the letter are “outrageous” and “disturbing.” It also says that Jones has a solid reputation in the community and was slated by committeeman Eggemann to run for the township position. Carrabotta has told the Journal & Topics that the matter is “confidential”. In a statement released yesterday (Tuesday) by State Republican chairman Tim Schneider, he said, “The Illinois Republican Party strongly believes that sexual harassment has no place in any workplace, public or private, and that allegations must be investigated swiftly by independent parties. If the allegations against the Maine Township trustee are true, he has violated the public’s trust and should step down. Until then, the investigation involving the allegations should proceed.”)

Appropriators are cutting its budget by $42 million, forcing furloughs and cutbacks in investigations that identify billions of dollars in savings yearly. So misguided is this effort that Senator Tom Coburn, Republican of Oklahoma and one of the most conservative members of Congress, came to the agency’s defense. In a report issued by his office on Nov. 16, Senator Coburn pointed out that the G.A.O.’s budget has been cut by 13 percent in real terms since 1992 and its work force reduced by 40 percent — more than 2,000 people. By contrast, Congress’s budget has risen at twice the rate of inflation and nearly doubled to $2.3 billion from $1.2 billion over the last decade.
