https://www.chicagotribune.com/sns-tns-bc-congress-commentary-20191129-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The report recommends Congress significantly ramp up its technical expertise on committees, and at support agencies like the Government Accountability Office and the Congressional Research Service. A recent study by Harvard’s Belfer Center came to a similar conclusion, finding that “Congress has not shown that it has the necessary capacity and expertise to fully exercise its constitutional duties … (and) has appeared unprepared to reckon with emerging technologies and their effects on society.” . . . There have also been efforts within GAO to bolster its science and technology capabilities, leading to the creation of the Science, Technology Assessment, and Analytics team, as well as a new Center for Strategic Foresight. Restoring Congress’ foresight and analytical capabilities would be an important step toward reestablishing the institution’s place as the “first branch.” Both GAO and OTA were designed to serve the major policy priorities of committees, and thus offer a high return on investment per dollar spent for taxpayers. Nonetheless, it’s not the only upgrade needed.)

EFFINGHAM DAILY NEWS
— Why start a business when you can start a movement? – Jim Nowlan (DIERSEN: Political parties exist to help elect candidates who can and will defend and advance their platform. From what I see, far too many of those who dominate the Republican Party reject far too many planks in the Republican Party platform, typically the traditional family, right to life, immigration, Second Amendment, illegal drugs, and equal opportunity (no race or gender based preference giving) planks. They focus on destroying those like me who support the aforesaid planks.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: In the present era, national politics are shaped by winning intra-party primary elections, which are largely captured by activists at polar extremes. The great swath of us in the middle are marginalized, having little impact on who become candidates. I propose a nationwide competition — with big prizes — among teams at our business school MBA programs, to develop the best “business plan” for creation and implementation of a new, competitive political party.)

Obviously, Barone has never been adversely impacted by patronage, political affiliation discrimination, reverse discrimination, age discrimination, or retaliation. From what I see, ever-increasingly, it is more difficult for those who share my demographics to have a successful career. NASDAQ
— Why 60% Qualified Is Enough, According to a Recruiter (DIERSEN: GAO audits IRS. In 1980, when I was 31 years old, according to the Democrats who ran GAO, I was NOT qualified to transfer in from IRS as a GS-12 Step 5, currently $93,592/year. They insisted that I accept a downgrade to GS-9 Step 10, currently $74,024/year, a pay cut of $19,568/year (21%) in today’s dollars. They never would have done that if I had been a Democrat, minority, female, or veteran. I had passed the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979. I had almost completed the requirements for a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul. I had earned an MBA from Loyola in 1976. I had worked for IRS for almost 9 years, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $82,579-$93,592/year. I had earned a bachelor’s degree in management from NIU in 1970. Much of what I did for IRS was very similar to what I would be doing for GAO including interviewing, gathering data, summarizing data, analyzing data, report writing, and making recommendations.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: If you’re a woman who has ever embarked on a job search, you may have heard the buzz: Women and men tend to approach job searching differently. In 2013, HP released a report stating women usually apply for jobs only if they meet 100% of the requirements. In many cases, women view a job description as a list of skills and qualifications they should already have instead of skills they can develop as they learn the job. Men, on the other hand, usually apply if they meet 60% of the requirements. While this statistic certainly does not apply to all job seekers, it does resonate with many women in the workforce.)

HUMAN RESOURCES DIRECTOR
— Onboarding: What HR professionals need to know Onboarding is an essential but commonly overlooked component of an organization’s success – Geraldine Grones (DIERSEN: I should write a book about my first 2 year working for GAO in 1980 and 1981. My Democrat superiors, supervisors, and coworkers did everything that they could to get me to go back to IRS, and failing that, to destroy any possibility that I would ever get promoted. In my defense, I completed the requirements for a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul in 1980. I passed the Certified Internal Auditor’s examination on my first attempt in 1981 and became a licensed CPA in 1981.)

https://illinoisfamily.org/faith/chick-fil-a/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In a stunning act of betrayal, Chick-fil-A’s charitable foundation, the Chick-fil-A Foundation, has announced it will no longer donate to the Salvation Army, Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), or Paul Anderson Youth Home (PAYH). Though Chick-fil-A has not publicly acknowledged the reason for its betrayal, everyone knows what it is. Chick-fil-A is attempting to curry favor with the “LGBTQ+” community that is shredding our social fabric. This policy shift constitutes a cowardly betrayal of Chick-fil-A’s Christian ethos and its Christian customers who have stood by Chick-fil-A through all its trials at the hands of legions of supporters of sexual deviance. Broods of vipers identifying as apostles of justice, equality, tolerance, diversity, inclusivity, and compassion have been protesting and maligning Chick-fil-A since 2012 when Dan Truett Cathy, chairman and chief executive officer, made some public statements in an interview with the Baptist Press supporting true marriage and opposing the legal recognition of homosexual unions as marriages. After homosexuals got wind of Cathy’s theologically orthodox and unremarkable statements, some part of hell broke loose and raged against Chick-fil-A. Fortunately for Cathy and Chick-fil-A, Christians turned out en masse all across the country to show their support with their time and money for Cathy’s stand for truth. And this is how Cathy and Chick-fil-A repay them.)

None, for now, have been explicitly fired by Trump, even as he and his allies suggest otherwise. It’s created an odd and uncomfortable situation for staffers, who say they are unclear on their colleagues’ futures in the administration. Over the weekend, a GOP talking point emerged that Trump was well within his rights to choose his own team, a response to Yovanovitch public recounting of the smear campaign orchestrated by Trump’s allies to push her from her post in Kiev. “America hired @realDonaldTrump to fire people like the first three witnesses we’ve seen,” the President’s son, Donald Trump Jr., tweeted as Yovanovitch began her testimony. “Career government bureaucrats and nothing more.” A day later, Trump himself suggested on Twitter he’d already fired the three State Department employees who have appeared in public impeachment hearings, quoting the conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Like candidates from the time of George Washington, the South Bend, Indiana, mayor is leaning hard on his seven-month deployment as an intelligence officer in Afghanistan as a powerful credential. As he does, he walks a narrow path between giving his wartime service its due and overstating it. He is careful not to call himself a combat veteran even as he notes the danger he faced. One of his former competitors for the Democratic nomination, Rep. Seth Moulton of Massachusetts, has drawn a sharp contrast between his four combat tours in Iraq and Buttigieg’s service. And a former commanding officer, who said he thinks Buttigieg would be within his rights to say he is a combat veteran, nonetheless questions the use of a rifle in his ads. As support for his campaign grows, Buttigieg can expect more intense scrutiny of his military record in a political climate where military service is far from sacred, as past attacks on the records of Republican John McCain and Democrat John Kerry show.)

https://www.theguardian.com/media/2019/nov/18/new-york-times-editor-says-trump-has-put-his-reporters-lives-at-risk

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The executive editor of the New York Times has accused Donald Trump of putting his reporters’ lives at risk by subjecting them to personal abuse and describing them as “enemies of the people”. Dean Baquet, who has led the news outlet during one of the most tumultuous periods in its history, said the US president’s history of verbal attacks on journalists such as the New York Times’s political reporter Maggie Haberman was “appalling” and risked having serious consequences. “I think his personal attacks on reporters, including Maggie, are pretty awful and pretty unpresidential,” he said. “I think personal attacks on journalists, when he calls them names, I think he puts their lives at risk. “I think that when he actually calls reporters names, says they’re un-American, says they’re enemies of the people … that phrase has a deep history. I think when he says that, it is an appalling attack on the press.” Baquet’s comments in an interview with the Guardian reflect Trump’s lengthy history of abuse towards journalists in general and the New York Times in particular. They echo comments from the newspaper’s publisher, AG Sulzberger, who has also clashed with Trump over his treatment of the media. Last year Sulzberger said he had told Trump in a meeting that “this inflammatory language is contributing to a rise in threats against journalists and will lead to violence”.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Since his exit from politics, the GOP has had to change direction. The party hopes its grassroots fundraising campaign, called Lincoln Legion, will raise funds the old-fashioned way. Hackler says 92 percent of all donations in 2019 have been of $100 or less. How it’s playing out: The party raised $36,405 during the most recent reporting period that ended Sept. 30, according to the State Board of Elections. That’s up from $19,000 in donations the previous three months. Republicans have $106,369 cash on hand — up from $88,412 at the end of June. The House Republican Organization has $417,006 cash on hand; the Republican State Senate Campaign Committee has $214,986 cash on hand; and House Minority Leader Jim Durkin has $1.1 million on hand. Those are small-fry numbers compared to the Democratic Party of Illinois, which has $819,289 cash on hand. Sure, there are more Dems in Illinois, but the differences are stark. Friends of Michael Madigan has $7.1 million, the Democratic Majority has $4 million, and the 13th Ward Organization, where Madigan holds sway, has $1.8 million. Pritzker isn’t the only reason Dem fundraising outpaces the GOP. There’s been an eroding of Republican support in the affluent suburbs. Call it the Trump effect, says Democratic political consultant Scott Kennedy. “The 2018 Democratic fundraising success has largely been attributed to a higher level of enthusiasm among Democratic voters but the number of check-writing affluent suburbanites who switched from Republican to Democrat in the Trump era likely also played a role,” he told Playbook. “If Illinois Republicans are going to rebound, they’ll need to reverse that trend.”)

Some of these entrenched government workers have reached a point of concern have become known as the “deep state operatives.” Oxford Dictionaries defines “deep state” as follows: A body of people, typically members of the government agencies or the military, believed to be involved in the secret manipulation of control of government policy. The “deep state” and its policy of allowing extremist ideologies to flourish may be the actual issues of concern. Because a federal employee faces a greater chance of dying on the job over getting fired, it has embolden more and more federal employees to undermine elected officials if their views differ with the leaders we have elected. Had Hillary Clinton been elected instead President Trump, we may have never known just have pervasive the “deep state” had become.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: It’s Millennials vs. Boomers. A young, female New Zealand lawmaker called out an aging, outspoken associate with an offside comment, “Okay, boomer,” and the reverberations are still being felt. She didn’t invent the online meme, but Cloe Swarbrick fired the shot heard round the world. The massive generation of Millennials, essentially people in their 20’s and 30’s, are beginning to give louder voice to their frustrations about the world they’re inheriting. The massive generation they’re targeting, Boomers, essentially everyone 55 and over, were the people who invented the concept of a Generation Gap. They did it when they were the age of today’s Millennials. Houston psychotherapist Dr. Lawrence Abrams says inner-generational warfare is just par for the course. “It gives you someone to get mad at, and we all need someone to get mad at sometimes,” he suggests. The older generation, however, has the law on their side when it comes to verbalized put downs, according to Cozen O’Conner attorney Joseph Sirbak. “’The Age Discrimination in Employment Act’ prohibits discrimination on the basis of age, and that covers people over 40, so by definition anyone who is a Boomer is going to be legally protected.” People under the age of 40 have no such legal protections. Okay, Millennial?)

— California’s Board Diversity Tax A study finds that a director mandate cost companies $60 billion. – Editorial (DIERSEN: While I worked for the federal government in Chicagoland for almost 30 years, my superiors were always under tremendous pressure from Democrat Chicagoland Democrats a) to hire, retain, and promote young Democrat minorities and young Democrat females and b) to make way for them by getting rid of their employees who were Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran.
https://www.wsj.com/articles/californias-board-diversity-tax-11573256678
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Democrats in California work hard to punish businesses and sometimes they succeed without trying. Consider a 2018 law that imposes gender quotas for boards of public companies based in the state, which a new study finds effectively destroyed $60 billion in wealth over night. Last September the state enacted a law requiring all public companies headquartered in California to have at least one female director by the end of 2019 and two by the end of 2021. Democrats claimed that increasing board diversity would benefit corporations. Investors supposedly needed politicians to tell them what was in their best financial interest.)

For me, it came from what I had earned and saved a) working for IRS for 15 months in 1971 and 1972 and b) working for Firestone Stores full-time for 7 months and part-time for 18 months 1970-1972. That money also enabled me to buy a new Corvette in 1971 and to pay tuition for graduate business courses at Loyola.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Though the new law decriminalizes casual use of marijuana, the panel noted employers can still maintain policies that prohibit use of marijuana or other substances to maintain job and workplace safety, and companies that deal with federal contracts can still adopt no-tolerance policies since the federal government classifies marijuana as a top-level narcotic. Attorney Ross Molho, a partner with Clingen Callow & McLean LLC in Lisle, stressed that while employers cannot restrict marijuana use outside of work, they still have the right to maintain safe workplaces, which includes establishing policies that prohibit impairment at work. “Employees have the right to use this substance, but they don’t have the right to come to work impaired from this substance,” Molho said. “In some sense, we need to think about it like tobacco or alcohol.”)
