Illinois Church Action on Alcohol & Addition urges you to “1. Contact your Mayor, Village Trustees, Aldermen, and County Board member to ask them to sponsor or support an ordinance to prohibit retail marijuana sales, dispensaries, and marijuana businesses. 2. Talk with churches/pastoral associations, local law enforcement, doctors, counselors, fire chief and emergency personnel, teachers, school administrators, activists, and others in the community and ask them to write letters and speak at a public hearing in support of a ban on marijuana sales. 3. (FROM THE POSTING: Municipal Cannabis Business Prohibition Illinois municipalities may prohibit cannabis business establishments from locating in their jurisdiction by adoption of a local ordinance. IML recommends a public hearing in advance of the adoption of such an ordinance to create a record that supports that determination. While local governments are required to allow medical cannabis dispensaries subject only to local zoning provisions, adult-use cannabis business establishments may be prohibited. The first state licenses for adult-use cannabis business establishments are anticipated to be issued to organizations operating existing medical dispensaries, authorizing retail sales of adult-use cannabis at those locations starting January 1, 2020. Municipalities with medical dispensaries operating in their jurisdiction may limit or prohibit adult-use cannabis business establishments through local ordinances, but may want to consider adopting those provisions in order to provide those existing dispensaries clear direction in advance of any application. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Former state Rep. JEANNE IVES, who waged a bitter challenge against then-Gov. Bruce Rauner in last year’s GOP gubernatorial primary, has thrown her hat in the ring for the 6th Congressional District. Ives’ bid to unseat Democrat Sean Casten assures fireworks. Republicans have identified the seat, which pulls from Chicago’s Western suburbs, as a battleground. Casten, and fellow freshman Democratic Rep. Lauren Underwood, yanked their suburban seats from Republicans in 2018, and the GOP wants revenge. The GOP may have the perfect soldier in Ives, who isn’t afraid to get dirty in campaigning, but she first must face former Lt. Gov. Evelyn Sanguinetti in the primary. That’s some delicious political irony given Sanguinetti was on Rauner’s ticket when Ives battled for governor. Rauner only eked out a victory in the primary before going on to lose to Democrat J.B. Pritzker in November. If turnout for the 2020 primary is low, she would have a natural advantage in the race against Sanguinetti — who still has little name recognition even after being Rauner’s No. 2. “Ives has a knack for Trumpy divisiveness that will serve her well in the Republican primary, but absolutely doom her in a general election because voters kicked out the last member of Congress for being too close to Trump,” Tom Bowen, a Democratic political strategist, told Playbook. In the 2018 primary, Ives drew the ire of Democrats and some Republicans alike for running an ad that was denounced as anti-immigrant, racist, sexist and transphobic. Casten may be well-prepared to face the likes of Ives, having gone through a tough cycle in 2018 when he unseated former GOP Rep. Peter Roskam in a contentious and high-profile race. This time, Casten has the advantage of being an incumbent in a district that’s veering left of its traditional GOP stronghold. Casten also isn’t afraid to duke it out in debates or on social media, which could make this race a fun one to watch. Ives’ entry into the 6th District race comes days after second quarter financial reports showed Sanguinetti raised just $103,647 — a paltry sum compared to the $700,000-plus Casten has raised.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: If you were shocked by the images of the Mexican flag flying over an Aurora, Colorado, immigration detention center this weekend, you’ll be appalled at an even more disgusting spectacle: One of the top promoters of the so-called Lights for Liberty nationwide protests by Trump-hating, ICE-bashing radicals was a nonprofit religious organization known as the Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service. As a designated “host,” LIRS played a key role in publicizing, organizing and participating in demonstrations against President Donald Trump’s deportation enforcement actions targeting some 2,000 illegal immigrants and their families who have ignored removal orders or skipped out on court hearings. Brazen hatred of cops, Border Patrol and ICE agents were on full display at the open borders protests fronted by LIRS and other left-wing groups, including Code Pink, CASA and CAIR. Marchers echoed the “Close the Concentration Camps” rhetoric of congressional brat pack Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y. They carried signs declaring “ICE=Gestapo” and “Free the People, Burn the Camps.” It’s not just idle rhetoric. Antifa thug Willem Van Spronsen, armed with a rifle and incendiary devices, attempted to set a Tacoma ICE facility on fire on Saturday before being shot dead. He has been hailed as a “hero” and a “martyr” by fellow “progressive” travelers, while sympathetic mainstream reporters and activists look the other way. The president and CEO of LIRS, Krishanti Vignarajah, is a Sri Lankan refugee and former Michelle Obama policy director who led the Lights for Liberty event in Washington, D.C. She argues that Americans are obligated to open the floodgates at the southern border (since she turned out so great) and vehemently opposes what she calls “militant border enforcement.” To these border-sabotaging radicals, of course, any border enforcement is “militant.” LIRS sounds like just the kind of extremist group you’d expect to be kept afloat by billionaire George Soros’ big bucks. But hold on to your wallets and your American flags, folks: In 2016, LIRS relied on $64.7 million in government subsidies from taxpayers – that’s you and me – to fund a whopping 96.2 percent of its budget. LIRS is one of nine agencies that receives tens of millions of dollars to resettle refugees from around the world. The organization brags that it is “a vital arm of the United States refugee admissions program” that has worked with the State Department to import “over 500,000 refugees” to our country. One of LIRS’ most famous clients? Somalian-born Minnesota Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar, whose immigration, marriage and tax fraud problems I reported on in my column last month. If only a fraction of LIRS clients share Omar’s contempt for our security and self-governance, you can see the trouble we’re in. And that’s just the caseload of one of the nine resettlement giants that together rake in an estimated $1 billion a year. That’s because as a conservative at my small, Minnesota-based liberal arts institution, I’ve spent the last four years defending myself against personal and political attacks from professors and peers alike. The most recent example came in late April as the St. Olaf College Republicans hosted scholar Heather Mac Donald for a talk on her new book, “The Diversity Delusion: How Race and Gender Pandering Corrupt the University and Undermine Our Culture.” As chair of the group, I fielded many angry emails, including this from a theater professor: “This speaker is dangerous. It’s not about a difference in idealogical [sic] perspectives. This rhetoric is dangerous and puts my Black body in danger. This is antithetical to the St. Olaf mission statement. I’m not okay with this… and you all shouldn’t be either.” Several more professors emailed similar sentiments. This example is no outlier. In early 2018, college administrators shot down an effort to bring Ben Shapiro to campus for a speech. The officials denied the request by saying Shapiro was too divisive to bring to St. Olaf on the date in question. (It was the one-year anniversary of a racial protest on campus). They promised Shapiro could come at some unknown future date, but months of student organizing and planning were essentially wasted. Shapiro never made it to St. Olaf College. Also last year, our College Republicans’ display called “Why I’m a Conservative” was torn down by students upset by its messaging. They were apparently triggered by expressions such as “All human life has value,” “Facts > feelings,” “I love economic freedom” and “I pay taxes.” All these incidents spring from the prevailing ideology on campus, which was perhaps most evident the day after President Donald Trump was elected. The campus was in a tailspin. Several professors cried in front of their classes. Some canceled class altogether. Students openly wept in the quad. Protests broke out at a moment’s notice.)
