SOUTHERN
— Union County Democratic Party withdraws legal action over county board’s pick for state’s attorney – MOLLY PARKER (DIERSEN: What do you say to a) those who cast Republican primary ballots and/or sign Republican candidate petitions but who focus on destroying Republicans and b) those who do not cast primary ballots and/or do not sign candidate petitions but who focus on destroying Republicans?)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: In a statement to The Southern on Thursday, Union County Democratic Party Chair Teresa Vincent said that the county’s legal counsel has since provided her the necessary documentation establishing Klingemann’s affiliation to the Democratic Party. Klingemann, a private attorney in Marion who previously worked as an assistant state’s attorney with Edmonds, had not voted in primary elections, and was not active in party politics. The board confirmed his appointment by a 3-2 vote along party lines, with Republicans voting in favor of his confirmation and Democrats against. Union County Board Chairman Max Miller previously said that Klingemann stated to him during the interview process that he was a Democrat, which he said satisfied the party affiliation requirement under the law. But Vincent argued that Klingemann’s record was not sufficient to establish him as a Democrat. She pointed to a section of the law that specifically speaks to the replacement of state senators and representatives and defines party affiliation as follows: A person is a member of a party for 23 months after signing a petition for a candidate’s partisan candidacy for office, signing a petition joining a particular party, pulling a partisan primary ballot, running for partisan office or otherwise holding a partisan position such as state central committeeperson.)

RUSS STEWART
— BAIL-OUTS PROLIFERATE AMONG DEMOCRATIC COMMITTEEMEN
http://www.russstewart.com/articles/2019/09-11-19.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Here is a multiple-choice question for anyone who is still paying attention. A Chicago Democratic ward committeeman is (a) at the top of the political food chain, (b) at the bottom of the political food chain, (c) holds a non-paying post that is inconsequential, and/or (d) believes it’s a steppingstone to glory and power. Anybody who is now or has been a committeeman would answer (b) and (c). Anybody who aspires to and is running for committeeman in 2020 would answer (a) and (d). And everybody else, including this columnist, would give a resounding (c). After all, the sitting Democratic committeemen of the 1st, 39th, 40th, 41st, 45th and 49th wards, who were elected in 2016, lost 2019 bids to be elected or re-elected alderman, and the 50th Ward committeeman and the former 32nd Ward committeeman lost 2018 state senator and county commissioner races. Robert Murphy (39th) and Pat O’Connor (40th) lost the April 2 aldermanic runoff with, respectively, 44.1 and 46.2 percent. Proco Joe Moreno (1st), Tim Heneghan (41st), John Arena (45th) and Joe Moore (49th) lost the Feb. 26 primary with, respectively, 38.8, 29.7, 36.2 and 36.6 percent. And Ira Silverstein (50th) lost his Illinois 8th Senate District seat with 29.9 percent and John Fritchey (32nd) lost with 44.6 percent. They would surely answer the above question with a (b) and (c).)

THE HILL
— How important is candidate age? – MARK MELLMAN (DIERSEN: How old are you? I am 70. All my critics/opponents, all their operatives and all their dupes promote age discrimination a) because they want to get rid of those who are older than they are and/or b) because they want to curry favor with those who promote age discrimination.)
https://thehill.com/opinion/campaign/460812-mellman-how-important-is-candidate-age
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Candidates are not simply bundles of age, race and résumé. They have issue positions and priorities, personality traits and personal stories, that weren’t measured in these conjoint experiments. We don’t know how much age matters compared to those factors. More broadly, moving from the generic to the specific is not always clear cut. In our example, while 70 may be too old, not all 70-year olds are too old. That’s exactly what a new CBS YouGov poll on candidate age tells us. In response to questions specific to each candidate, just 37 percent said Sanders was “too old” to be president, 31 percent said Biden was and only 5 percent believed Warren is too old to be president. Polls seem to tell us that age is important. But failure to ask the right questions, in the right ways, can lead analysts and strategists astray.)

https://www.wsj.com/articles/one-argument-for-radical-income-transparency-11568167323
(FROM THE ARTICLE: How much do people actually know about the income and wealth of people who live around them? And how does what they think they know skew the way they think about government taxes and spending? Recent research we conducted suggests that the answer to those two questions are: Not much and a lot. An emerging body of research suggests that citizens’ preferences for spending on public goods—from social programs to health care to infrastructure—are based in part about who they believe contributes and benefits. However, we discovered that many people are unaware of the true extent of inequality where they live. And in some cases, their beliefs are dramatically different than reality.)

Further, I fully disclose my demographics: Trump supporter, Protestant (baptized, raised, and confirmed as a Missouri Synod Lutheran), patriotic, White, male, old (born in 1948), non-poor, gun owner, 100% German American, draft avoider, my ancestors have been in America since 1844, etc.)
https://thehill.com/opinion/technology/460595-liberals-haunted-by-social-media-tactics-they-use-against-the-right
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The reason why liberal editors are so distraught that independent conservative journalists are publishing evidence of the racist, anti-Semitic, and otherwise vile sentiments expressed by their supposedly “objective” employees comes down — as it usually does — to power. Many journalists are in the profession not to inform the public, but to gain the power to destroy people who question them — and they don’t like those tactics being turned against them. “[U]sing journalistic techniques to target journalists and news organizations … is fundamentally different from the well-established role of the news media in scrutinizing people in positions of power,” the Times wrote in its article — which was of course labeled “news,” not “opinion.”)

A communication may be considered defamatory “if it tends so to harm the reputation of another as to lower him in the estimation of the community or to deter third persons from associating with him,” according to the American Restatement of Torts (or “The Restatement”). Examples of defamatory statements are virtually limitless and may include any of the following: . . . A communication that exposes a plaintiff to ridicule A communication that reflects negatively on the plaintiff’s character, morality, or integrity . . . A communication that suggests that the plaintiff suffers from a physical or mental defect that would cause others to refrain from associating with the plaintiff)

https://blogs.findlaw.com/blotter/2012/09/3-crimes-for-threatening-a-politician.html

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Ever think of threatening a politician? With the endless loop of commercials and phone calls, it’s only our sanity and knowledge that threatening a politician may be a crime that stops most of us from doing so. But every year, a few people do lose it and lash out with threats and actions against a politician or political candidate.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Whether weed-infused drinks are going to catch on the way vape pens, edibles, and traditional flower have is still up for debate, but your favorite beer companies are still most likely looking over their shoulders. And that’s because they have a legitimate concern that the cannabis industry may lure consumers away from alcohol. At “Cannabis In The Booze Industry,” a conference during Bar Convent Brooklyn, a trade show for the beverage industry in June 2019, leaders from both the cannabis and alcohol industries gathered to talk about how one affects the other. All signs are clear that the rapidly growing cannabis sector is a significant threat to the alcoholic beverage industry, particularly for beer drinking consumers. Larger alcoholic beverage distributors, including Constellation Brands, Molson Coors, and Heineken, have already invested heavily in cannabis in an effort to ride the wave rather than be washed away in a potential tsunami of non-alcoholic canna-drinks. Or, as studies like research from the University of Georgia and Syracuse University in New York are finding, legalization of marijuana could mean interest in — and consumption of — alcohol experiences a corresponding decline. . . .3). Bars Are Ready to Get Onboard With the inclusion of cannabis-infused drinks, bars stand to attract consumers who would want to socialize or recreationally indulge while avoiding alcohol. These beverages could offer options to widen bars’ customer base to include people who don’t want to drink alcohol. Since there’s a chill-factor to the beverages, whether they’re THC- or cannabidiol (CBD)-infused, makes them stand out from current non-alcoholic options.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Having election discussions at work is another risk you should avoid. Those conversations may start innocently enough, but given the level of emotion that seems to accompany everything these days, it is better to avoid getting into them at all. An innocent conversation with a colleague may turn into a Hatch Act complaint filed with the Office of Special Counsel, or into a fight, or a damaged working relationship that persists for years. You are unlikely to convert your coworkers to your side, so it is far better to keep politics out of work entirely.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: I made a promise to myself early in my career. If my job ever became so unbearable that I got stomach cramps at just the thought of walking into the office, it was time to quit. But what if staying in your crummy job is the only way to have tens of thousands of dollars in student debt forgiven? This is the issue vexing a reader, who asked me during a recent online discussion: Should I stay or should I go? “I’m a federal employee with five years left to loan forgiveness,” the person wrote. “I work in a toxic office and have been trying for several years to find a job in a different agency. I was recently offered a two-year term position that would be in a new practice area with supervisory responsibility and a fairly significant pay raise. But I would lose the ‘golden handcuffs’ of virtually guaranteed employment and risk losing six-figure loan forgiveness if I don’t find a permanent position during the two years. Is it worth it?”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: China effectively expelled a Wall Street Journal reporter from the country, one month after the newspaper published a report detailing allegations that a cousin of Chinese leader Xi Jinping was involved in high-stakes gambling and potential money laundering in Australia. Chinese authorities told the Journal on Friday it would not renew press credentials for Chun Han Wong, a Singapore national who has covered Chinese politics out of the paper’s Beijing bureau since 2014. Those credentials expired Friday. China sometimes withholds or refuses visas to punish international news organizations for what the ruling Communist Party perceives as unfavorable coverage. But the decision amounted to the first time in recent memory that the Chinese government has effectively turfed out a reporter from the Journal, a publication generally known for incisive but evenhanded coverage of the country.)

DAILY HERALD
— OUTSTANDING: Naperville resident organizing rallies against recreational pot – Marie Wilson
https://www.dailyherald.com/news/20190829/naperville-resident-organizing-rallies-against-recreational-pot
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Jennifer Bruzan Taylor does not want her children living near recreational marijuana dispensaries. She feels so strongly about the issue that she’s organizing a movement encouraging her hometown to #OptOutNaperville. Bruzan Taylor is one of about 15 people planning rallies to push the Naperville City Council to prohibit recreational marijuana shops from opening under the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act, which goes into effect Jan. 1. The city could enact a ban as soon as Tuesday; the issue is expected to be up for a vote during a meeting at 7 p.m. in the municipal center at 400 S. Eagle St. The Opt Out Naperville movement is hosting rallies at 10 a.m. Saturday in Central Park and 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Free Speech Pavilion along the Riverwalk to gather people who want the ban put into effect. Bruzan Taylor said she expects around 100 people to attend the Saturday event. “I would never have moved here if we had opted into selling recreational marijuana,” said Bruzan Taylor, a Naperville native who moved back to her hometown because of its strong reputation as a kid-friendly place. “I would have picked a suburb that didn’t.” In Chicago, where Bruzan Taylor and her family lived for about 10 years, she said neighbors using marijuana in their condo building would overwhelm the place with the smell of weed. If Naperville allows shops selling the drug for recreational purposes, she said she fears the same would happen in the state’s fourth-largest city. “I know it’s supposed to be on private property only,” she said about recreational use. “And yet, that’s not what happens.” . . . Bruzan Taylor hopes Naperville leaders will decide the best location for these businesses is nowhere. “I just don’t see this as being good for Naperville economically and also for its image as being family conscious,” she said. “I decided to organize this (rallies) in order to show the councilmen that people in Naperville care about this.”)

— If you care about journalism, you’re defending Brian Karem and Joel Pollack Both do actual journalism, and petty politicians have no right to sit in judgment. – Tiana Lowe (DIERSEN: I should write a book about petty politicians who have sat in judgment of me since 2000.)
https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/if-you-care-about-journalism-youre-defending-brian-karem-and-joel-pollack
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Snowflakery knows no political bent, and hostility towards the free press is a grievance centuries older than the First Amendment. The twin tales of Playboy’s Brian Karem and Breitbart’s Joel Pollak exemplifies the oft ignored fact that people in power of all political stripes simply despise answering to the Fourth Estate. Karem’s currently fighting the Trump administration in the courtroom to reclaim his hard pass, which the White House suspended following the journalist’s verbal sparring match with an equally belligerent Sebastian Gorka during the president’s social media summit in the Rose Garden. Beto O’Rourke staffers booted Pollak from a campaign event, with the 2020 longshot’s spokeswoman lambasting as “hateful” and bordering on “perpetrat[ing] hate speech.” Both fights are absurd, and not because of the journalists prolonging them. Neither Karem nor Pollak have hidden their ideological or partisan affinities. The Playboy White House correspondent openly excoriates the president on Twitter, while Pollak’s persona and outlet are openly conservative. But both do actual journalism, and petty politicians have no right to sit in judgment. As long as they’re going to claim they support a free press, the Trumps and Betos of the world must tolerate the scrutiny, tough questions, and even intentional rhetorical provocations that come as a natural responsibility of power.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: In the latest sign that major American media outlets are losing the public’s support, a majority believe it is appropriate for politicians to criticize reporters and hold them to the same scrutiny as those they cover. A new Rasmussen Reports survey also said most voters believe the average journalist is liberal, and few are conservative. The survey is an indictment of the media at a time when liberal outlets such as CNN and the New York Times are stepping up their attack on President Trump and congressional Republicans. The outlets are also complaining about Trump’s criticism of them and called out Trump surrogates who are using social media to point out the bias of journalists. But, said Rasmussen, voters believe that reporters are fair game for criticism. The survey analysis said 61% of likely U.S. voters think reporters at major news organizations like CNN, Fox News, and the New York Times are public figures who deserve scrutiny. Some 19% disagree. Significantly, 51% said “it is appropriate for elected officials to criticize specific reporters and news organizations,” Rasmussen reported in the survey shared with Secrets before its release. Another 39% view the criticism as a threat to freedom of the press. That is slightly higher than the 48% who said criticism from politicians was OK back in February 2017 when Trump began singling out news organizations that were attacking him. And the public continues to view journalists as liberal. The survey said 47% believe the typical reporter is more liberal than they are. Just 19% of voters believe reporters are more conservative than they are.)

SPRINGFIELD STATE JOURNAL REGISTER
— AUGUST 16, 2012 FLASHBACK: A bunch of political info — daily – Bernard Schoenburg
https://www.sj-r.com/x1782330063/Bernard-Schoenburg-A-bunch-of-political-info-daily
(FROM THE ARTICLE: There are lots of websites that compile political news, and I think it’s time I share one that I find quite interesting. It’s at www.gopillinois.com, and, as you can tell by its address, it has a Republican flavor. That is an understatement reinforced with the comments added by the compiler himself — DAVID DIERSEN of Wheaton. He introduced a recent UPI story about Republicans’ views on the drought and wildfires by saying: “Democrats blame everything bad, including bad weather, on Republicans, especially on Republicans who are conservative, White, male, older, non-poor and non-veteran.” And talking of a New York Times article about a photographer arrested while on assignment in the Bronx, Diersen wrote that since 2000, he has been thrown out of, barred from, or not advised of news conferences “by Democrats, Democrat plants, RINOs (Republicans in name only), their operatives, and their dupes.” Thus, if you don’t want to read some very pointed comments, you may not want to go to www.gopillinois.com.  But you would be missing a treasure of links to the day’s news and opinion. Diersen, 63, is a retired federal employee who became the Illinois editor of a national GOP website in 2000, and since 2004 has put out his own Illinois compilation every day. There’s usually about 50 articles daily, he says. He’s generally up by 3 a.m. He says he spends at least 10 hours a day on this passion of his, with no pay, and has put out links to more than 117,000 articles. As his comments above hinted, party regulars don’t always greet his work with relish. He includes dissident voices within the GOP tent, and some whose credibility is questionable. But he puts it all out there. He’s a GOP precinct committeeman, and he believes in people having information. He also wants to help elect Republican candidates who “will defend and advance the party’s platform.” The site makes available plenty of Diersen history, too, including how his “liberal Democrat superiors,” in his view, forced him to take early retirement at 49 from the U.S. General Accounting Office, “because of his opposition to race and gender based preference and his participation in a class action lawsuit” on that subject. He wouldn’t mind my telling you that he also passed his CPA and Certified Internal Auditor exams on first attempts more than three decades ago. Agree or disagree with him, but Diersen provides a bunch of interesting information — every day.)
