DAILY HERALD
— Naperville Republicans hosting spring primary to make election ‘open’ – Marie Wilson  (DIERSEN: If you are NOT going to defend and advance the Republican Party platform and the Illinois Republican Party platform, you should NOT seek or hold any kind of government or political office as a Republican.)
http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20161004/news/161009522/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Republican voters in Naperville Township should mark their calendars for Feb. 28, 2017, when they can head to the polls for a primary election. The Naperville Township Republican Organization decided to hold a primary next year instead of a caucus to choose candidates for positions before the April 4 election. Seats included in the primary are for supervisor, clerk, assessor, highway commissioner and four township trustees. Carl Schultz, Naperville Township Republican chairman, said the group chose to buck its recent trend of slating candidates through a caucus because a primary will allow all interested voters to get involved. “I think it’s a very positive move,” Naperville Township Supervisor Rachel Ossyra said. “It shows the organization’s commitment to transparency, accountability and ensuring all the voters have access.” With a caucus, state-mandated to take place during a gathering on a certain night, Schultz said “there’s a lot of people that are excluded — not maliciously, but by fact.” Military members or college students or anyone who happens to be out of town on caucus night wouldn’t be able to participate, Schultz said. Neither would anyone in the hospital or unable to access the caucus site. The decision comes at a time when Naperville Township is the subject of political discussions about government consolidation — either by managing road district operations through agreements with other entities or by potentially eliminating townships themselves. “Given some of the local issues regarding townships, we thought we should broaden (the candidate selection process) and make it as open to the entire community as possible,” Schultz said. “It gives voters the best opportunity to weigh in on what’s going on.” What’s going on, Schultz and Ossyra say, is really a discussion about “modernizing government.” The discussion could mean more people will want to be involved as candidates. If there is broader interest, Naperville Township Highway Commissioner Stan Wojtasiak said hosting a primary is a good move. It allows anyone to gather signatures, get their name on the ballot and run — without having to be a party insider. “It opens up the field to anybody who has any interest,” Wojtasiak said. The Republican organization is encouraging anyone who wants to run for a township position to review the 2017 candidate’s guide from the Illinois State Board of Elections. Prospective candidates must file nominating petitions between Nov. 21 and 28.)

1011 NOW
— Lawmakers concerned as millennials show little interest in public service – Peter Zampa (DIERSEN: Many millions have not and will not seek a job with the federal government a) because the pay and benefits are terrible, b) because the advancement opportunities are terrible, c) because they lack required education, work experience, professional certifications, and/or professional licenses, d) because they cannot pass an employment examination, e) because they cannot pass a background investigation, f) because they cannot pass a physical examination, g) because they cannot take the demonization, denigration, and condemnation that comes with being a federal employee or federal retiree, and/or h) because they are Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran and they know that the federal government discriminates against its employees who are Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran.)
http://www.1011now.com/content/news/Lawmakers-concerned-as-millennials-continue-to-show-little-interest-in-public-service-395866121.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Are millennials uninterested in public service? That’s a question lawmakers are pondering in Washington. Statistics show younger generations are scared off by federal government jobs. “Bring back this sense of civic idealism that you can make a difference,” said Steven Olikara, Founding President of the Millennial Action Project. Millennials are shying away from public service. The goal of the Millennial Action Project is to bring American politics into a more inclusive and bipartisan age, by using the talents of younger generations. “There’s this larger narrative that we have to combat which is that you can’t make a difference in public service,” said Olikara. “The levels of distrust continue to be high levels. Something like 80 percent of millennials don’t trust the government to do the right thing.” Olikara says recruitment and compensation are two huge issues when it comes to incentivizing young people. “There is a systemic problem, we need cultural change, and I think the biggest thing I hear all the time is, we need to be rewarding talent and rewarding results,” said Olikara.)

http://chicago.suntimes.com/news/theo-epstein-and-his-neighbors-near-wrigley-hire-private-security/
(FRON THE ARTICLE: With crime surging citywide, residents in one of Chicago’s wealthiest neighborhoods are chipping in to hire private security guards to patrol their 16-square-block section of Lake View a half-mile west of Wrigley Field. Among those donating to the cause: Cubs President Theo Epstein and his wife. The Epsteins are among “dozens” of families who have contributed to the Southport Community Alliance, a not-for-profit group formed in June to pay for patrols of homes bounded by West Grace Street, West Roscoe Street, and Southport and Ashland avenues. Marie Whitney, Epstein’s wife, is one of three directors of the organization, according to state records. Besides a rise in burglaries and robberies in their neighborhood, the Epsteins understandably have other concerns about safety.)

http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/lawmakers-obamas-hiring-of-political-appointees-deeply-troubling/article/2603443
(FROM THE ARTICLE: House and Senate lawmakers Monday called for changes to federal hiring practices that appear to be fostering political favoritism in the Obama administration, by making it too easy for political appointees to become career federal workers. A new report issued by the Government Accountability Office found that out of 69 cases in the Obama administration where federal appointees were able to convert political jobs to career federal service positions, a quarter of those hires “did not follow proper procedures intended to prevent improper political favoritism.” The process of political appointees converting their appointments into career positions is known as burrowing. “The nonpartisan watchdog’s findings that one out of every four political appointees who burrowed into the executive branch during this administration did not follow the rules is deeply troubling,” House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton, R-Mich., said in a statement. “One of the reasons the federal government has laws on merit-based hiring is to prevent cronyism and political favoritism,” said Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation Chairman John Thune, R-S.D. “GAO’s finding that the Obama administration hasn’t consistently followed these rules is troubling.” The GAO found that among the 30 agencies reviewed, 28 reported “converting 69 individuals from political to career positions from January 1, 2010, to October 1, 2015,” and among those, 17 were hired without required review by the Office of Personnel Management. House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, called for the administration to impose “a more stringent process,” for hiring employees who began as political appointees. The largest number of appointee-to-career federal employee conversions took place at the Department of Homeland Security.)

FORBES
— Mark Kirk And The Failure Of GOP Moderates – Chris Ladd
http://www.forbes.com/sites/chrisladd/2016/10/03/markkirk/#218d229b5c09
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois sent a Republican to the US Senate in 2010. Mark Kirk won in an otherwise solidly Democratic state by positioning himself as a unique brand of Republican. Voters saw him as a courageously pragmatic voice, a counterbalance to the extremism sweeping the GOP elsewhere in the country. Senator Kirk has been a bitter disappointment, slipping into the timid habits of the party’s other moderates. Now Illinois voters are about to bring him home. Sending Mark Kirk to the Senate has accomplished nothing for Illinois other than to empower outrageous characters like Ted Cruz and Jim Inhofe. When Senator Ted Cruz held the entire country hostage to his filibuster of a budget compromise, how did Kirk protect his constituents? By sitting in the background, waiting for a green light from Senate Republican leadership to end the filibuster. Kirk did nothing to mobilize opposition to Cruz’s goals or tactics and never opposed him publicly. Like other reasonable Republicans in Washington, he kept his head down, missing every opportunity to rally sane, pragmatic Republicans into a relevant power bloc. When Senator Rand Paul organized a bizarre, paranoia-laden rant of a filibuster to halt the appointment of the CIA Director, Illinois voters might have expected their Senator speak up for their interests against the “whacko bird” caucus. Instead, Kirk brought Senator Paul a snack. Contrary to popular belief, the Republican Party still retains a core of solid citizens with the country’s best interests at heart. Many of those Republicans, like Senators Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski and Rob Portman, occupy positions from which they could affect change in the party. Unfortunately, sensible Republicans have consistently been spineless in the face of opposition from the party’s fringes. Elect a reasonable figure like Mark Kirk and he will meekly place every ounce of his (your) power and influence in the service of the carnival barkers at the party’s extremes. Speaking to audiences in Illinois, Kirk has been proud to support immigration reform. In Washington, silence. In Illinois, Kirk has claimed to embrace scientists’ positions on climate change. In Washington when he could have taken a stand that mattered, he blinked. Facing friendly audiences in Illinois Kirk admits to being pro-choice. When he gets to Washington his pro-choice credentials are hidden in some obscure Senate closet, only taken out be used on votes with no consequence. Kirk has refused to support Donald Trump, but like almost every other prominent Republican he has done so quietly and ineffectively, in a manner calculated to deliver the weakest impact. On issue after issue, Kirk lines up with Illinois voters until he leaves the state. In the face of opposition from other Republicans in Washington, Kirk takes the safe route. Blind to the irony, Kirk has made “courage” the signature of his campaign for re-election. His remarkable recovery from a stroke, which features at the center of his campaign message, makes his Senate record all the more awkward. Kirk struggled back to health in the face of  paralysis, eventually scaling several flights of stairs in the Willis Tower in a remarkable demonstration of grit and determination. Clearly the man possesses a powerful well of courage. Where was that steely force when Illinois voters needed it? Kirk will claim that he’s been courageous in taking a stand with Democratic Senator Menendez to impose sanctions on Iran. What courage does that take exactly? What powerful, well-funded lobby supports Iran in Washington? In Washington, “taking on Iran” is about as courageous as taunting an asthmatic kid on the playground. It would take actual courage for a Republican Senator to champion a rational response to climate change or gun violence. That is the force Illinois voters thought Kirk would bring to bear on their behalf in the Senate. Instead, Kirk has trained his courage on a politically impotent force, one of the least popular countries on the planet. Kirk has reserved his courage for political targets that won’t fight back. In private, sensible Republicans who occupy influential positions in Washington will claim that they are doing all they can. They will claim that they are carefully picking their battles. Climate change, immigration reform, and restructuring the tax code are issues they would like to push forward, but the party at the national level is not ready for sound solutions. These timid moderates are right about the party’s serious problems. Their complicity is making the party’s sickness more severe. Sensible figures like Susan Collins and Mark Kirk have come to play a toxic, enabling role in the GOP’s descent into madness. Their placid party loyalty lends credibility to outlandish characters like Louie Gohmert, Ted Cruz, Steve King and Donald Trump. Republican leaders like Kirk cannot continue to evade responsibility for the extremism they legitimize. Until someone in the Republican Party is willing to take a visible, courageous stand for sanity in the style of John McCain circa 2000, there is no reason to keep electing them. Any vote for a supposedly “sane” or “reasonable” Republican unwilling to confront the party’s extremes is a vote for those extremes. Electing Mark Kirk is a mistake Illinois voters are unlikely to repeat.)

CBS MINNESOTA
— College Republicans Paint Controversial Mural On U Of M Bridge
http://minnesota.cbslocal.com/2016/10/01/u-of-m-trump-mural/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A student group’s mural on the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus has ignited conversation and controversy. The U of M College Republicans group painted a mural yesterday in the group’s designated spot along the Washington Avenue Bridge. Dozens of student groups paint murals along the inside walls of the pedestrian level of the bridge every fall. This group’s read in part “Build The Wall,” which refers to presidential candidate Donald Trump’s proposal to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. The sign was later vandalized with the words “Stop White Supremacy.” Multicultural groups who did not support the vandalism later gathered to protest what they called “anti-immigrant” hate speech. “There’s freedom of speech but then there’s hate speech. It’s one thing to be conservative and it’s another thing to be saying these things that are clearly xenophobic and targeting specific groups of people,” Guillermo Perez said. Perez is a member of Sigma Lambda Beta, a Latino-based multicultural fraternity that happens to have the panel next to the College Republicans. “I was really angry, angry because it’s an attack to my people because I am Mexican,” Perez said. The group responded using its own panel, which said, “Building bridges, not walls.” “We’re trying to seek, at the very least, an apology and recognition that what they did was wrong,” Perez said. U of M President Eric Kaler said while some may find the initial message offensive it is protected speech and should not have been vandalized. He released a statement saying: “During the annual ‘Paint the Bridge’ event, an opportunity for registered student groups and University departments to promote their groups by painting a panel on the Washington Avenue Bridge, one panel assigned to a student group has received attention. The panel includes the phrase from Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, ‘Build the wall.’ While this is protected as free, political speech, we have heard from members of our community who find the phrase hurtful, offensive, anti-immigrant, and anti-Latinx. “People in our community may disagree with the sentiment expressed. However, while the University values free speech, the subsequent vandalism of the panel is not the way to advance a conversation. “The University of Minnesota supports a campus climate that welcomes all members of our community and our values of equity and diversity, but that also ensures the free flow of ideas, even those that are offensive to some. As students and our community participate in responses to this and future issues, I urge all of us to be respectful and thoughtful in our approach. We encourage all who find some protected speech distasteful or offensive to engage in more protected speech.” The College Republicans also released a statement Saturday. “We find it highly disturbing that someone would vandalize a simple statement such as ‘build the wall’. “We have received comments on the painting, falsely accusing us of being racist, xenophobic, and anti-immigrant. Our party’s nominee supports building a wall on the Mexican border to stop the flow of illegal immigrants into this country. We understand that some students may disagree with this policy position. However, free speech is at the center of a functioning democracy, and the actions taken against our panels run contrary to free speech. It’s worth noting that numerous politicians from both parties support building a wall on the Mexican border. “President Obama, Vice-President Biden, Secretary Clinton, and Minnesota Governor Dayton have all supported building a wall on the Mexican border while they were U.S. Senators (Secure Fence Act of 2006). We look forward to students writing angry letters and reporting these Democrat politicians to the Bias Incident System for hurting their feelings as well. “Regardless of how one feels about border security or Mr. Donald J. Trump, it is never acceptable to infringe on other people’s freedom of speech. University policy clearly states, ‘Any alteration(s) to any panel by any person(s) outside of these designated time(s) is considered vandalism and subject to University Policy and/or local, state and federal laws.’ “We appreciate President Kaler’s statement of support for our freedom of speech and we expect the university to continue to uphold their commitment to freedom of speech and diversity of thought.”)

— 5 Facts You Didn’t Know About Retirement  Here are some important retirement-related facts about Social Security, long-term care, retirement savings balances, homeownership, and taxes. – Jason Hall
http://www.fool.com/investing/2016/10/02/5-facts-you-didnt-know-about-retirement.aspx
(FROM THE ARTICLE: 3. Average retirement savings will generate less than $500 per month  According to Vanguard, which manages millions of retirement savings accounts, the median balance in defined contribution plans (think 401(k) plans) it manages for people 55 and over was less than $72,000 in 2015. For context, that would only generate about $240 per month in retirement income. This only covers a small selection of total retirement savings, but even as a small sample size it’s concerning. The U.S. Government Accountability Office offers up a bigger picture look, but it’s still concerning. According to the GAO, the median age 55-64 household has $104,000 in retirement savings, while the median age 65-74 household has $148,000 saved. Sure, that’s a lot more than Vanguard’s data, but in terms of dependable retirement income, it’s only worth $347 to $493 per month in retirement income. Paired with an average Social Security benefit of less than $1,500 per month, that’s not a lot of money to live on in retirement. For millions of older Americans, there’s an even bigger concern. The GAO found that 29% of households age 55 and over don’t have any defined benefit (such as a pension) or retirement savings at all.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: According to the Economic Policy Institute, a left-leaning Washington think tank, the average 1 percenter family in McLean County earned $679,124 three years ago (the latest data available), while the remaining 99 percent earned an average of $51,440. That means a 1 percenter here makes about 13 times more than the rest of us earn, on average. That ratio puts McLean County pretty much in the middle of a ranking of the nation’s 3,064 counties. Somewhat comforting, I think, especially in the context of some other EPI data. For instance, McLean County’s 1 percenters take in 11.8 percent of the income earned here. That compares with 26 percent in Lake County — the high water mark in Illinois — and the national average of 20.1 percent. The latter two numbers are stunners. A local figure that may trouble egalitarians more is that 41 percent of McLean County’s moolah is made by the top 10 percent of earners. Another way to say that: 10 percent of local households take in 41 cents of every dollar earned here. Yet it’s 57 cents in Lake County, and about 48 cents in all of Illinois and the entire nation. Again, striking numbers. Do you aspire to be a 1 percenter in McLean County? Your family would have to earn at least $365,000 to make the cut — about $24,000 less than the national average. The best (and fresher) news comes from the U.S. Census Bureau. Last year, it says, nearly 5,700 McLean County residents climbed out of poverty. Unfortunately 19,116 McLean County residents are still classified as poor. That’s 11.5 percent of our population — a big number, to be sure, but 3.4 percentage points better than two years ago.)

http://time.com/money/4515096/hillary-clinton-national-service-reserve-millennials/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Hillary Clinton wants you to serve your country. The Democratic presidential candidate proposed a new program on Friday aimed at expanding national service volunteer opportunities–for young Americans in particular. Clinton’s National Service Reserve would allow Americans pitch in with ongoing service projects addressing the addiction epidemic or helping the homeless, or perhaps to help provide emergency relief in national disasters and situations such as the water crisis in Flint, Mich. Clinton plans to work with corporations and universities to ensure “reservists” get paid time off to volunteer or, in the case of students, college credit.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Illinois Senate endorsement: Seth Lewis
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/editorials/ct-illinois-senate-endorsements-madigan-rauner-cullerton-edit-20161003-story.html
(FROM THE ENORSEMENT: 23rd District: The remap of legislative districts in Democrats’ favor helped nudge Sen. Tom Cullerton, former Villa Park mayor and a cousin of Senate President John Cullerton, into this seat in 2012. Cullerton has done some things we like. He was lead sponsor of a bill blocked by Republicans to get rid of the unnecessary lieutenant governor’s office. But he doesn’t wander far off his party’s script and should have voted against a budget this spring that was $7 billion out of balance. He voted “present.” Our nod goes to Republican Seth Lewis, an insurance agent from Bartlett, who as a Bartlett Fire Protection District trustee hasn’t been afraid to vote against more spending. He also isn’t afraid to speak against generous pension packages that taxpayers subsidize — including that of his wife, who is a school superintendent. Ouch. We wouldn’t want to be at the dinner table for that discussion.)
— Illinois Senate endorsement: Dan McConchie
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/editorials/ct-illinois-senate-endorsements-madigan-rauner-cullerton-edit-20161003-story.html
(FROM THE ENDORSEMENT: 26th District: This northwest suburban seat opened in April when incumbent Dan Duffy resigned early. Local GOP leaders rallied to Dan McConchie of Hawthorn Woods, who won the March Republican primary. McConchie didn’t get our endorsement in that race, but he’s getting it this time. He has shown a willingness to work across the aisle and dig into policy, including school funding reform and anti-sex trafficking efforts. His opponent, Democrat Kelly Mazeski of Barrington, is an impressive candidate who has been involved in her local government. She characterizes McConchie as “a one-issue” lobbyist who is too socially conservative for the district. We’re not convinced. McConchie left his job with an anti-abortion organization and has shown he is not a one-issue legislator. Let’s give him a chance. McConchie is endorsed.)
— Illinois Senate endorsement: Mel Thillens
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/editorials/ct-illinois-senate-endorsements-madigan-rauner-cullerton-edit-20161003-story.html
(FROM THE ENDORSEMENT: 28th District: We like Sen. Laura Murphy, D-Des Plaines, because she is direct and outspoken. As a former member of the Des Plaines City Council, she advocated canceling a contract with a group opposing O’Hare airport expansion because taxpayers weren’t getting enough for their money. But so far in Springfield, she has stuck to the Democratic playbook, including voting for piecemeal budget bills that expanded government programs but had no real funding attached to them. She also supported a bill at the behest of the state’s largest employee union that was anti-taxpayer. This is a race where taxpayers could say “Enough!” with the budget games. We’re endorsing Republican Mel Thillens of Park Ridge, whose view of government’s role is less, less and less.)
— Illinois Senate endorsement: Michael Amrozowicz
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/editorials/ct-illinois-senate-endorsements-madigan-rauner-cullerton-edit-20161003-story.html
(FROM THE ENDORSEMENT: 31st District: Let’s get one thing out the way: Republican candidate Michael Amrozowicz’s name is pronounced “Am-RO-zo-wits.” The Gurnee resident and former Lake County Republican Party chairman is running against incumbent Sen. Melinda Bush, D-Grayslake, who was elected in 2012 and buoyed by a new, favorable district map. Bush voted against most versions of pension reform and supported a union-backed bill that most editorial boards from Rockford to Carbondale criticized as irresponsible and anti-taxpayer. The state is broke. Taxpayers are tired of shouldering all the promises. Amrozowicz would bring more fiscal sanity to the Senate. He is endorsed.)
— Illinois Senate endorsement: Pamela Althoff
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/editorials/ct-illinois-senate-endorsements-madigan-rauner-cullerton-edit-20161003-story.html
(FROM THE ENDORSEMENT: 32nd District: Sen. Pamela Althoff, R-McHenry, is running for a two-year term and says if re-elected, it will be her last: “I believe in term limits.” Appointed to the seat in 2003, she has represented the northwest suburbs ever since. She has been successful at passing legislation because she lobbies her colleagues on both sides of the aisle and in both chambers. She knows Democrat staff just as well as Republican staff. Not many legislators can say that. We disagreed with her handling of a government consolidation bill this spring — she watered it down — but she still got the bill passed and signed into law. Althoff is endorsed over Democrat Melissa Coyne, a small business owner and community activist from Fox Lake.)
— Illinois Senate endorsement: Sue Rezin
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/editorials/ct-illinois-senate-endorsements-madigan-rauner-cullerton-edit-20161003-story.html
(FROM THE ENDORSEMENT: 38th District: A rematch is underway between Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, and Christine Benson, D-Ottawa. Benson lost to Rezin 46 percent to 54 percent when they faced off in 2012. Benson retired that year as superintendent of Streator Elementary School District 44, which has been struggling with a budget deficit due in part to the state’s inability to make full school payments. But Streator-area voters signaled they are taxed out. They rejected a school referendum to raise property taxes. Rezin would be a stronger advocate for those tax-weary residents. She is a consistent advocate for government consolidation and financial stability. We doubt Benson, who retired with a generous pension and is backed by organized labor, would be as prudent. With Democrats holding their 39-20 advantage over Republicans in the Senate, taxpayers can’t afford to lose another seat. Rezin is endorsed.)
— Illinois Senate endorsement: Michelle Smith
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/editorials/ct-illinois-senate-endorsements-madigan-rauner-cullerton-edit-20161003-story.html
(FROM THE ENDORSEMENT: 49th District: In this southwest suburban district, Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, D-Shorewood, is facing Michelle Smith, R-Plainfield, who is the board president in Plainfield School District 202. On the school board, Smith has tried to keep the property tax levy steady while dealing with unpredictability from the state. “Attempting to build a budget every year is like throwing darts blindfolded,” Smith says. Incumbent Bertino-Tarrant should understand the pressure the state’s financial chaos creates in her district — yet she couldn’t bring herself to vote against House Speaker Michael Madigan’s budget, which was $7 billion out of balance. She voted “present.” Votes like that are the reason the state’s finances are a disaster. Smith is strongly endorsed.)
— Illinois Senate endorsement: Paul Schimpf
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/editorials/ct-illinois-senate-endorsements-madigan-rauner-cullerton-edit-20161003-story.html
(FROM THE ENDORSEMENT: 58th District: We know both Republican Paul Schimpf of Waterloo and Democrat Sheila Simon of Carbondale to be dedicated public servants. Schimpf served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was an adviser to Iraqi prosecutors during the trial of Saddam Hussein. Simon was lieutenant governor under Pat Quinn. But here’s a case where voters in Southern Illinois can demand change. The economy in this part of the state is desperate for revitalization. Democratic policies have not worked. Schimpf supports workers’ comp changes to make Illinois more business-friendly. He also supports tort reform and term limits. Schimpf is endorsed.)
— Illinois Senate endorsement: Dale Fowler
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/editorials/ct-illinois-senate-endorsements-madigan-rauner-cullerton-edit-20161003-story.html
(FROM THE ENDORSEMENT: 59th District: It’s strange that Sen. Gary Forby, D-Benton, claims to be a fiscal steward, often proclaiming that the state should retire its massive pile of unpaid bills. Then he voted in May for House Speaker Michael Madigan’s spending plan, which everyone knew was $7 billion short. He didn’t have to vote for it. Most Democratic senators did not. Remember that, voters of this district, when you show up to cast a ballot on Nov. 8. A better choice is Dale Fowler, mayor of Harrisburg, who knows what “reckless spending” actually means. Fowler is endorsed.)
— FROM THE ARTICLE: 22nd District: Tracy Smodilla of Bartlett, didn’t run in the primary but managed to ward off a Democratic challenge as a last-minute slated Republican. She’s smart, outspoken and fiscally conservative. She is not afraid to stand up to, well, anyone. She successfully fought an unnecessary tax increment financing district in her hometown. We hope to see her name on future ballots.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/naperville-sun/ct-nvs-dupage-county-early-voting-st-1002-20160930-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Early voting  Early voting started Thursday in the DuPage County, and has already drawn hundreds of residents eager to cast ballots in a presidential election expected to draw 80 percent of the county’s registered voters. “Early voting has started! We can vote for Hillary today! Then we’ll get a glass of wine,” said Maureen Quirk, of Wheaton, who joined co-worker Debbie Szydlo, of Carol Stream, at the Wheaton-based election commission office Friday afternoon to make official their votes for the Democratic presidential candidate. “She needs suburban white women. Well, here we are,” Quirk said. About 160 voters Thursday and nearly 200 Friday filled out ballots to vote for president, U.S. Senate, DuPage County offices and other races at the 421 N. County Farm Road office, said Joseph Sobecki, assistant executive director of the DuPage County Election Commission. The site is the first early polling place in DuPage County. Nearly a dozen more are scheduled to open around the county Oct. 24 and will operate through Nov. 7. Election Day is Nov. 8. The crowd Friday wasn’t exclusively made up of Democrats or Clinton supporters. Voters Bob and Carole Rutan, both 74, of Wheaton, said they are registered Republicans although they declined to name their candidate of choice. “I don’t like either one of them that much,” Carole Rutan said. The couple said they wanted to vote before heading to Florida later in October. Sobecki said he and his staff are preparing for record voter turnout — expected to be as high as 80 percent — in this year’s general election. The spring primary election drew a record number of DuPage County voters, with nearly 290,000 ballots cast. “It was the highest total number we’ve had since we recorded primaries,” Sobecki said. “We expect that trend to continue for the general election.”)

— DuPage Election Commission wants its lawyers to be less political – Robert Sanchez

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Attorneys representing the DuPage County Election Commission might have to say “no” the next time a candidate asks them for a campaign contribution. The board that oversees the commission is working to establish a policy that would prohibit the agency’s attorneys from engaging in certain political activity “on behalf of any candidate under the jurisdiction” of the commission. According to a draft of the document, the proposed policy is intended to assure the public that the results of elections in DuPage “are free from any factors which would affect the integrity of the vote tabulation or the voter confidence in the electoral process.” The move comes after officials learned that Bond, Dickson & Associates — a Wheaton law firm that represents the election commission — has donated more than $6,300 since 2003 to Republican Recorder Fred Bucholz.)

ILLINOIS REVIEW
— JOSHUA NAPONIELLO: MY DAY WITH DONALD TRUMP IN BOLINGBROOK  (DIERSEN: Those who spoke very highly of Trump at this outstanding event included Roger Claar and Rudy Giuliani.  The 300+ attendees included John Cabello, Brad Cole, Dan Cronin, Demetra DeMonte, Kirk Dillard, Ron Gidwitz, Dan Hampton, David MacNeil, Richard Porter, Todd Ricketts, Skip Saviano, Tim Schneider, Mickey Straub, and Dave Tornga.)
http://illinoisreview.typepad.com/illinoisreview/2016/09/naponiello-my-day-with-donald-trump-in-bolingbrook.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: How crazy is it that I ended up volunteering for perhaps the next president of the United States?  I mean you would have thought that by talking to Roger Claar the Mayor of Bolingbrook, I would volunteer at a Trump fundraiser! I can only say it was the best event that I have worked on in my early political life. Setting up tables was a challenge but greeting people by the door was amazing. Friendly faces, attitudes, familiar faces like (former State Senator) Kirk Dillard, (Bolingbrook Mayor) Roger Claar and (Chicago Cubs’ owner) Todd Ricketts.  I also had the pleasure of sitting next to (former New York City Mayor) Rudy Giuliani during the lunch. The speech that Trump delivered was electrifying. Reducing regulations, repealing Obamacare, and lowering taxes on the middle class. Straight to the point concise, was how his speech was, and everyone stood and applauded our future president of the United States. Unfortunately, there was a negative point, as I was called traitor and fake by Mexican protesters against Trump, yet I kept my smile and head straight up and continued to help Trump. After the event I traveled outside to see Trump supporters waving American flags and chanting “USA,USA,USA”. I got to talk to some of the Trump supporters and we discussed Trump at the first debate. Another highlight was being quoted in a Chicago Tribune story, link here https://www.google.com/amp/www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/bolingbrook-plainfield/news/ct-nvs-trump-bolingbrook-st-0929-20160928-story,amp.html  Otherwise I had a great time and learned from Trump what it means to be a leader. — Just say no to Narcan? Heroin rescue efforts draw backlash – AP  (DIERSEN: Untended consequences SEE: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unintended_consequences  “In the social sciences, unintended consequences (sometimes unanticipated consequences or unforeseen consequences) are outcomes that are not the ones foreseen and intended by a purposeful action.”)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/sns-bc-us–heroin-overdoses-backlash-20160925-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: First responders in U.S. communities reeling from waves of heroin overdoses say some people tell them they should just say no to using so many resources on drug abusers. Authorities say people have expressed frustration about rescuing addicts who often immediately resume using the potentially deadly drug. There are also concerns voiced about the wide-ranging social and government budget costs involved, including for the overdose antidote naloxone. Some signs of heroin overdose backlash: — Gov. Paul LePage in hard-hit Maine vetoed legislation this year to expand access to naloxone, usually under the brand name Narcan. He has explained that when people are receiving a dozen or more doses, they should start having to pay for it. The Legislature overrode his veto. — An effort by authorities in Ohio’s Hamilton County to get a dangerous heroin batch off the streets by offering immunity for people who turn in drugs drew a rebuke from Sheriff Richard Jones in neighboring Butler County, who argued it only enables dealers and users and gives them an excuse if they are caught. — A police photo of a grandmother and her boyfriend unconscious after overdosing with a 4-year-old boy in their car went viral this month after the police department in Ohio’s East Liverpool posted it on Facebook, drawing thousands of comments including from people decrying lenience toward users who endanger children or steal to support their habits. — A retired attorney wrote an op-ed column in The Cincinnati Enquirer examining the costs of treating heroin addiction, the strain on public resources and the rise in “drugged driving” accidents as he urged aggressive punishment. “What social policy is advanced by subsidizing recklessness?” John M. Kunst Jr., of suburban Cincinnati, wrote earlier this year. “Why do we excuse and enable addiction?” “I understand the frustration,” said Police Chief Thomas Synan Jr. of Newtown, Ohio, who heads a Cincinnati-area heroin coalition task force. “I understand the feeling that someone is doing something to themselves, so why do the rest of us have to pay? But our job is to save lives, period.”)

I’ve been a staff writer since 1990. That’s long enough for me to have learned a thing or two about what makes this paper so great. (FROM THE ARTICLE: With more than 30% of federal employees eligible to retire by 2019, a lot of jobs could open up that the current federal workforce can’t fill. So, the government needs to recruit and retain the next generation of workers. Strong employee engagement—a positive feeling about one’s employer and its mission—tends to help agencies hire and keep employees. You might think that millennials are less engaged than other age groups, but the data in this testimony showed that engagement doesn’t vary much by age. Engagement increases for everyone when agencies demonstrate that they value their employees.)

(FROM AN EARLIER VERSION OF THE ARTICLE: David John Diersen, editor for gopillinois.com, said Rudy Giuliani made a surprise appearance.  He said Trump made many jokes and his winning Illinois is “in the realm of possibilities.” Attendee Joshua Naponiello, who’s a volunteer with the DuPage County GOP, said Trump gave a speech with talking points that included reducing regulation, reducing taxes for businesses and the middle class and repealing Obamacare. He said one of Trump’s guests included a representative of the Pakistani Islamic community and an Islamic prayer was given and everyone prayed along. Some of Trump’s supporters also showed up early, including Garry Slabaugh of Romeoville. He said he is excited the candidate he supported since the beginning of the primaries was virtually in his backyard. “I heard about (the fundraiser) last night, and I could hardly sleep,” Slabaugh said. “My wife wishes she was off today so she could be here.” He said he and his wife attended the Trump rally at UIC on March 11 that was canceled amid security concerns. “People were pounding our van and called us racist and they didn’t even know us,” Slabaugh said. “I hope it’s not like that today.” He said he’s not a racist and supports Trump because “he’s tells the truth.” “I don’t like the way things are going,” Slabaugh said. “I don’t want more of the same.” Police staged all demonstrators, supporters and media in a field across the street from the clubhouse not allowing anyone uninvited into the private event in which donors paid up to $250,000.)

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
— Trump pumps up the room in Bolingbrook fundraiser – Michael Sneed
http://chicago.suntimes.com/politics/sneed-trump-pumps-up-the-room-in-bolingbrook-fundraiser/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Hey! Hey!  It was a Trump love fest. Pull up a luncheon chair. Donald Trump, who has dinged Chicago for our murder rate, denounced the Cubs last year for being poorly run by owners who opposed his campaign, and expressed concern for the Chicago Bears going forward — was all banter, burble and bubble at a private luncheon in Bolingbrook on Wednesday. “I love Chicago. I am an investor here. It’s a great city,” chirped Trump, who left the Bolingbrook Golf Club fund-raiser organized by savvy Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar with $1.5 million bucks in his political pocket. “It was a huge blowout,” a luncheon source said. Trump, who took no questions from the 350 plus donors dining on cold salmon salad and Claar’s favorite yellow pudding, played it mellow while pitching podium bon mots to the audience in the Ronald Reagan room. Todd Ricketts, a co-owner of the Cubs who is CEO of the conservative Ending Spending Super PAC, was in attendance. In a shout-out to Ricketts, Trump yelled: “I want to commend the Ricketts family on their business plan and how they rebuilt the Chicago Cubs in a few short years!”  Ricketts shouted back:” It’s gonna be a great year because YOU are going to win the presidency AND THE CUBS ARE GOING TO WIN THE WORLD SERIES!”  (Trump’s praise for the Cubs followed disclosures Wednesday morning Joe Ricketts was doing a turnaround, endorsing Trump and donating $1 million to elect him.) The room erupted into applause. Trump was now on a roll. Tossing a huge shoutout to retired Hall of Fame football defensive tackle Dan Hampton, whom he mistakenly called “Dave,” Trump praised Hampton and asked him to join him on stage. “My daughter Ivanka always reminds me I am a BIG guy,” said Trump, who reportedly weighs 267 pounds. “So I just want to show my children there are guys bigger than me. And I want you to tell coach [Mike] Ditka how much I love the guy and appreciate his support and friendship.”  Then Trump told Hampton he “wished you’d suit up because the Bears need you.”  Trump also volunteered to lend Hampton his knees. “I have great knees and if you want to borrow them. I’d be more than happy to do so,” Trump said. Trump then gave a big shout-out to WeatherTech CEO David MacNeil, commending him for manufacturing his product in America. MacNeil shouted back: “And I employ 1,100 people here in Bolingbrook.” Trump, however, saved the knife for Republican U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk, who has refused to endorse Trump. The source claimed Trump stated: “It is one thing not to endorse me, but it another thing to use me in ads for yourself against me. Guys like Kirk who are behind in the polls can’t figure out why guys like me are ahead in the polls.” Trump, who told the crowd his campaign raised $18 million since his televised debate two days ago, singled Kirk out several times for disdain, the source added. Trump also praised Claar, who organized the event. Overseeing a diverse community, Claar’s event had a Muslim deliver the invocation, an African-American as master of ceremonies, and an African-American woman sing the national anthem, according to the source.)

  1. LOUIS TODAY
    — Do whites and men have too much power? – Scott Clement and Emily Guskin  (DIERSEN: How much power do you have?  Power is religious, government, political, and/or financial clout.)
    http://www.stltoday.com/news/national/govt-and-politics/do-whites-and-men-have-too-much-power/article_a343bfc0-b572-5f66-90f1-215d5820e7dc.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: It’s no secret that race and gender issues have been front-and-center in this year’s presidential contest, and a new Washington Post-ABC News poll shines a new light on a central part of this dynamic: views of the power of whites and men. White men fueled Trump’s overall support in the poll, with likely voters in this demographic favoring him by a whopping 40-point margin, compared with a nearly tied contest among white women (46-44) and Clinton’s 50-point lead among all non-white voters (69-19). The Post-ABC poll also asked whether men, women, whites and racial and ethnic minorities have “too much,” “too little” or “about the right amount” of influence in the country. Just more than four in 10 registered voters say each of women and minorities have too little influence, while far fewer say either has too much sway. Looking at whites and men, nearly four in 10 voters say men have too much influence in the country, while one-third says the same about whites. Putting those questions together, voters split evenly, with 48 percent saying whites or men have too much influence, while 48 percent say neither group does. The Post-ABC poll found responses to this question are closely connected with support for Clinton and Trump. Trump’s support is 36 points higher among voters who say whites have “about the right amount” or “too little” influence in America, compared with those who say whites have too much influence (53 percent to 17 percent). Trump’s support is also 27 percentage points higher among voters who reject the idea that men have “too much” influence, compared with those who do. Put together, Trump leads Clinton by a 57-28 margin among voters who say neither whites nor men have too much influence, while he trails Clinton by 52 points among voters who say both whites and men have too much influence (14-66). Fascinatingly, the impact of these attitudes is largest among voters who belong to the two historically advantaged demographics. Whites voters who say their racial group has too much influence prefer Clinton by a 38-point margin over Trump (61-23), while those who say their influence is about right or insufficient favor Trump by a 40-point margin (63-23). Likewise, male voters who say men are too influential favor Clinton by 25 points (52-27) while those who feel men are not too powerful prefer Trump by a 44-point margin (59-25). Political divisions over gender and race are far from new, and the poll also finds big partisan splits on these questions – an indication that they predate Clinton and Trump’s candidacies. Democrats are about twice as likely to say men have too much influence as Republicans and three times as likely to say whites have too much sway. But it is also likely that heated rhetoric over police shootings of black men, racism, sexism and immigration have helped solidify partisan divisions on issues of race and gender.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— League of Women Voters targets youngest in electorate – Suzanne Baker  (DIERSEN: Democrats have always targeted the “youngest in electorate.”  Democrats shout at young people that Republicans have caused, are causing, and will forever cause all their problems.  Ever-increasingly, Democrats hint/imply/argue/shout that virtually all employers are Democrats, and that therefore, if you are not a Democrat, you will not be able to get a job.  GAO hired me in 1980 because it could not find a qualified Democrat, minority, female, younger person, or veteran who would take the job.  IRS hired me in 1971 because it could not find a qualified Democrat, minority, female, or veteran who would take the job.  The Post Office hired me in 1966 because it could not find a qualified Democrat, minority, female, or veteran who would take the job.)

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
— Suit: Ex portrayed woman as Trump supporter in fake Facebook page – Matthew Hendrickson
http://chicago.suntimes.com/news/suit-ex-portrayed-woman-as-trump-supporter-in-fake-facebook-page/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A Cook County woman is asking Facebook to turn over information that could identify a person who created multiple fake Facebook profiles using her picture to imply that she supports Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. Gjadear Adi says the profiles were created by a man whose family’s marriage proposal was rejected by her, according to the petition filed Friday in Cook County Circuit Court. She wants to get information from Facebook about the creator to file a defamation lawsuit against that person, according to court documents. The accounts were opened under different names since July using Adi’s pictures, including several of her without her hijab, a veil traditionally worn by Muslim women to cover their heads and chests, the petition said. Adi is a practicing Muslim. Another fake profile said under the page’s education tab that she “studied lying at the University of Illinois at Chicago.” The creator of one of the fake accounts also posted photos of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump as a ploy to make it appear Adi supports Trump, “whose anti-Muslim rhetoric is highly offensive, especially to Muslims,” according to the petition. Adi claims the stress of being portrayed as a Trump supporter and appearing publicly without her hijab has caused panic attacks. The accounts were believed to have been created by a man who Adi had a previous courtship, according to the petition. The man, also a Muslim, would be aware of how damaging the photos and accusations against her could be to her standing in her family and community.)

— MORE PREDATORY AND CORRUPT BEHAVIOR BY POLITICIANS – Kent Kellar  (DIERSEN: I should write a book about politicians, their operatives, and their dupes who focus on a) stopping me from putting GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails out and b) stopping everyone from reading those emails.)
http://conservativerepublicannews.com/2016/09/23/more-predatory-and-corrupt-behavior-by-politicians/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Here’s an interesting issue to ponder. Is corruption rampant in government because the perverse incentive structure of politics turns good people into bad people? Or do bad people naturally gravitate to government and politics because it’s the easiest (and legal, though generally immoral) way to take money from other people? I guess this is like a chicken-and-egg question with no clear answer, though Mark Twain preferred the latter interpretation. Though he was being too narrow. Yes, Congress if filled with people who are willing to use coercion to take money from ordinary people in order to line the pockets of their cronies, but this is also true for politicians and bureaucrats in the executive branch, as well as their counterparts at the state and local level.)
