Others in Illinois have formed their own groups in Illinois to combat waste, fraud and abuse by public officials, including a coalition in Morgan County that has managed to bust several bureaucrats there. “They’re replicating the model,” Mr. Allen said. “We’re excited to see them step up and have success.” Edgar County Watchdogs, now rebranded as Illinois Leaks, has also spurred state media to action. Mr. Allen said Chicago Tribune reporters have told him his and Mr. Kraft’s work has “forced them to do a better job and do it faster.” Messrs. Kraft and Allen came together in 2011, discussing each other’s bureaucratic woes at a candidate’s dinner. Mr. Kraft had asked to film a school graduation so he could sell the video and learned that someone else was hired for the job without public discussion. Mr. Allen, the volunteer fire chief in the town of Kansas, learned that a dispatcher didn’t instruct the parents of a baby having trouble breathing on CPR techniques. He investigated and learned the 911 call center hadn’t certified its dispatchers in CPR techniques in the past six years, as is required by law. Further investigation there determined that taxpayer money was used for everything from pizza parties to gambling. Messrs. Kraft and Allen created their website and started investigating, using Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests to uncover a fount of bureaucratic blunders.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The GOP took a lot of flak this past week for its foolish attempt to use House rules to gut the Office of Congressional Ethics. Public scrutiny quickly sunk that effort, but another very dangerous rule change passed without much fanfare or media attention. As a result, House Republicans — with the backing of the incoming Trump administration — now have powerful tools to attack not just entire federal departments, but to go after individual federal workers as well. It’s called the Holman Rule, which was first used in 1876 and last used by Congress in 1983. It allows members on either side of the aisle to offer amendments to appropriations bills — which are often hundreds of pages long — in order to reduce the amount of money an agency receives, the number of employees an agency has, or the amount of money an individual federal employee can be paid. It’s alarming that members of Congress will now be able to engage in targeted witch hunts against entire departments or individual employees who happen to work on subjects that do not fit a representative’s values or agenda. The most obvious targets are Department of Energy climate scientists and State Department teams that work on gender equality issues — both of which have already been singled out by yet-to-be-sworn-in Trump administration. But the rule change can broadly apply to any program or individual civil servant. This means any federal employees — such as those who help monitor dangerous chemicals in the environment, patent examiners, those who administer vital health and food programs, federal student loan advisers — can be targeted. Reviving the Holman Rule is not just about finding waste. The author of the rule change clearly stated that members could cut the amount of money “that could be paid to an employee of the US government.” This is not to say that House members would engage in such behavior, but even allowing for such powers in the legislative process, without any input from the agency or the targeted employee, is unacceptable. The federal workforce has undergone many cutbacks under both Republican and Democratic administrations. The fantastical myth that civil servants are somehow responsible for a ballooning “big government” is simply pretext for baseless political attacks on federal workers. Employees of the federal government work in every congressional district to keep our food, water, and air safe for all Americans. We must take a stand to protect hard-working, diligent employees who now find themselves at risk of losing their jobs or suffering crippling pay cuts if a particular member of Congress or president decides to single him or her out. Members of our country’s federal workforce should not be turned into political pawns.)

They have lost America’s heartland and small towns and rural areas. Look at the political power shift to the right. The Democrats have 12 fewer U.S. senators than when President Barack Obama was sworn in, 63 fewer House members and 16 fewer governors. They have the lowest number of state legislators in more than 100 years. In only six states do Democrats control both the governorship and the legislature — the lowest number in our history. (FROM THE ARTICLE: He entered the White House a living symbol, breaking a color line that stood for 220 years. Barack Obama took office, and race immediately became a focal point in a way that was unprecedented in American history. No matter his accomplishments, he seemed destined to be remembered foremost as the first black man to lead the world’s most powerful nation. But eight years later, Obama’s racial legacy is as complicated as the president himself. To many, his election was a step toward realizing the dream of a post-racial society. He was dubbed the Jackie Robinson of politics. African-Americans, along with Latinos and Asians, voted for him in record numbers in 2008, flush with expectations that he’d deliver on hope and change for people of color. Some say he did, ushering in criminal justice reforms that helped minorities, protecting hundreds of thousands of immigrants from deportation, and appointing racially diverse leaders to key jobs, including the first two black attorneys general. These supporters say he deserves more credit than he gets for bringing America back from the worst recession since the Great Depression, the killing of Osama bin Laden, and a major expansion of health care that secured insurance for millions of minorities. They celebrate his family as a sterling symbol of black success. But Obama also frustrated some who believe he didn’t speak out quickly or forcefully enough on race or push aggressively enough for immigration reform. And his presidency did not usher in racial harmony. Rather, both blacks and whites believe race relations have deteriorated, according to polls. Mounting tensions over police shootings of African-Americans prompted protests in several cities and the emergence of the Black Lives Matter movement. Perhaps most strikingly, the president’s successor, Donald Trump, is seen by many as the antithesis of a colorblind society, a one-time leader of the “birther” movement that spread the falsehood that Obama was born in Africa. Trump’s strong reliance on white voters was in sharp contrast to the multiracial coalition that gave Obama his two victories. “President Obama represents the face of the future — multicultural America. Donald Trump represents the old racial order of the black-white divide,” says Fredrick Cornelius Harris, director of the Center on African American Politics and Society at Columbia University. “And for the next decades to come, there will be a battle between those two viewpoints of what America is.”  It took more than two centuries for America to elect a black president. It will take many years after he leaves office to sort out what it all meant.)

In 1854, he homesteaded a farm in southeast Crete Township.  In 1864, he bought 10 acres in northeast Crete and he and my great grandfather began operating Crete’s only hardware store at the northeast intersection of Main and Exchange; tragically, in 1966, the building was torn down and the land sold.  In 1902, my great grandfather had the 1285 Main Street built on the aforesaid 10 acres; it is one of Crete’s landmark homes; tragically, it was sold during the 1940s.  In 1926, my grandfather had 1286 Wood Street built on the aforesaid 10 acres. Between 1948 and 1954, my father, my mother, and I lived in an apartment above the aforesaid hardware store.  In 1954, my father, my mother, my brother, and I moved into the 1286 Wood Street home.  My father lived there until he died suddenly in 1969.  My mother lived there until she died last year.  I lived there until 1972.  My bother continues to live there.)
