It started harmlessly enough, depending on your definition, when passers-by yelled things such as, “F*** the white male patriarchy!” at those manning the table across from Hillman Library, the Pitt Maverick reported. Another “student came up to us and made a claim about how Trump wants to get rid of ‘his people,’” sophomore Kirk Breiner added to the Maverick. Then things escalated. A man declaring the table supported a “racist” candidate approached Breiner and another student volunteer Matt Kerlin, grabbed a stack of Trump door-hangers and nearly started a fight, the paper said. Later two students came over to the table, and one swept all the Trump literature to the sidewalk while the other flipped the table upside-down: The culprit then scurried away: “And we’re the violent ones,” one person, presumably a Trump supporter, was heard sarcastically noting on a video of the incident. Sophomore Steven Evanovich shot the clip and contacted campus police, who are investigating, the paper said. “It’s a shame that different opinions are met with such hostility at institutions of higher learning,” Evanovich told the Maverick. “Calling Trump’s rhetoric ‘hate speech’ actually reinforces and encourages the notion that violence against conservative or dissenting students is justified, and my own campus shouldn’t be a place where my friends or I are fearful for having opposing opinions.”)

(FROM THE EDITORIAL: The lip service that the Obama administration pays to veterans about their health care — given excessive waits at Veteran Affairs facilities and suicide hotline delays — extends to hiring them for federal jobs. By law, disabled veterans and those with active-duty service are supposed to get preference in federal hiring. But a government report shows that’s not always the case, specifically when political appointees are considered for plum jobs. “There is a clear bias against veterans,” Darin Selnick, a retired Air Force captain and former Veterans Affairs official, tells The Daily Signal. “They think veterans should start at the bottom like everyone else.” Of course, experience and qualifications are factored for federal job applicants; the law is supposed to prevent political favoritism. But in hiring a quarter of President Obama’s political appointees, federal agencies didn’t follow policies to avoid favoritism, according to the Government Accountability Office. The GAO report sampled 30 federal agencies from January 2010 to October 2015. Never mind proposed changes to hiring policies that would limit veterans’ job preference to a single use. For vets who have secured civilian government jobs, that would eliminate any preference consideration when they apply for higher positions. Our country owes its veterans a debt for their service. Playing fast and loose when it comes to federal job hiring is an intolerable disservice that deserves no place in any administration.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Three years ago, Chicago spent nearly $2 million — and $1.7 million more in legal fees — to compensate dozens of women denied firefighter jobs because of a discriminatory test of upper body strength that City Hall has now scrapped. Now, a dozen women who wanted desperately to become paramedics are accusing the Chicago Fire Department of devising two new physical agility tests that are equally biased against women. One test requires candidates to go up six flights of stairs with a 250-pound dummy within eight minutes. The other requires candidates to step onto and off of an 18-inch-high box to the beat of a metronome for two minutes without missing a beat while holding 25-pound weights in each hand. The lawsuit filed Friday in federal court alleges that the two tests were “invented to eliminate women” in a Chicago Fire Department where “discrimination against women is stubborn and purposeful.” The women are seeking back pay and other measures to compensate for the discrimination they have suffered. Shannon Markey said no amount of compensation could make her whole for the dream shattered by the city’s decision to fire her on the day before she was scheduled to graduate from the fire academy.)

Republican Linda Pasetti-Olson of Montgomery or Democrat Barbara Hernandez will fill a spot occupied by Maria Vazquez, who did not seek re-election. She served the remaining term of her late husband, Jesse. Neither candidate has held elected political office, other than precinct committeeman. Pasetti-Olson, 69, has made “life experience” a campaign issue. Hernandez, of Aurora, is 24. “I have the life experience to make the best decisions about how your tax dollars are being spent. This position will be my focus, and it won’t be competing with a social life, or a different career,” Pasetti-Olson wrote in a letter she posted on her campaign’s Facebook page. When she tells voters Hernandez’s age, they say, “She is way too young to be doing a job like this,” Pasetti-Olson said in an interview. Hernandez embraces her relative youth. “To my advantage would be that I am young,” she said, and that she has “fresh ideas” and the time and energy to interact with constituents. Hernandez cited the number of organizations and community events with which she has been involved. “What was she doing when she was 23?” Buying a house, paying taxes, raising children and working, Pasetti-Olson replied. Hernandez said she lives with her parents and does not pay rent but contributes money to household expenses. She works for state Rep. Linda Chapa La Via, and for the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. She cited several reasons, including paying college loans and not being ready to purchase property, for her decision. “I honestly think it is a cultural thing as well,” Hernandez said. “As Latinos, we tend to stay with family.” “I don’t feel like I’m too old” to serve effectively on the board, Pasetti-Olson said. She said she has been walking door-to-door to meet voters. Pasetti-Olson supports county board Chairman Chris Lauzen, including his effort to keep the county’s property tax levy frozen. Hernandez thinks the county should increase the levy, at least enough to account for growth due to new properties. Hernandez said she would support requests from the sheriff’s and state’s attorney’s office for more staffing and other resources. But where would money come from? She said the county should pursue getting more money from the state and federal government. “I feel like several state representatives have been able to bring back (money) for their regular (legislative) district, but they haven’t (specifically) looked into Kane County,” Hernandez said. She said she has developed connections in state and local government, working on constituent services for Chapa La Via, that would be useful. Pasetti-Olson does not support increasing staffing and said Kane County should study neighboring DuPage County for ways to reduce it. Pasetti-Olson cited traffic congestion in the district as one issue she is concerned about, specifically the intersection of Orchard Road and Route 30, and along Montgomery Road. She knows Aurora, the Illinois Department of Transportation and Kane County have long-term solutions in mind, but she wants quicker short-term fixes, such as installing more signals on Montgomery.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: A majority of both Republicans and Democrats say the 2016 election is a significant source of stress for them right now, according to a recent American Psychological Association poll. They should probably log off Facebook and Twitter. A new survey from the Pew Research Center suggests — in a result that will surprise precisely zero political reporters who tweet — that people don’t think social media are a particularly great form of political discourse. Full 59 percent of social media users say interacting with people they disagree with is more “stressful and frustrating,” while 35 percent say it’s more “interesting and informative.” And by an even more lopsided 64-29 margin, they say they actually find they have less in common with people they disagree rather than say they find more in common. These frustrations are — wait for it — bipartisan. Many more social media users also say the discussions there are less respectful, less civil and less policy-focused than say they are more respectful, civil and policy-focused. And about half (49 percent) say that they are angrier than other forums, while just 6 percent say they’re less angry. It’s not hard to look at these numbers and conclude that social media are playing a part when it comes to our increasing polarization in the United States. The numbers don’t prove it directly, but it does seem that many Americans find talking politics on Facebook and Twitter, at least, to be an experience that leaves them with less regard for the other side. What’s interesting about social media is that it actually exposes people to those alternate views in a way their personal lives may not. Just 23 percent of Facebook users and 17 percent of Twitter users say they mostly follow people with similar political views to their own. That might be more they can say for their personal lives, in which their friends and neighbors are increasingly likely to be like-minded, thanks to something political scientists call “sorting.” But that doesn’t mean people are going to like what those they disagree with are saying. In fact, if nothing else, this survey suggests it might be one of the worst ways to have a reasoned political discussion. And yet, it’s probably one of the few forms of real political dialogue many people are having.)

Franks posted his venture on Facebook, and the story has since been shared hundreds of times. “I didn’t think it would get shared that much, but people really cared about our students and Alabama A&M University.” So far, Franks has helped nearly 100 students. Due to his 2012 stroke, spokeswoman ELENI DEMERTZIS said, Kirk has lost complete vision in his left eye. At Sangamon Auditorium at the University of Illinois Springfield, Kirk and Duckworth were at a table in the middle of the stage, and questioners, including myself, were at a table on stage to their left. Kirk often was looking in our direction, but had to turn far enough to use his right eye to do so. The moment of the debate that got the most attention was when Duckworth talked about her family’s military history dating back to the Revolutionary War, and Kirk said, “I’d forgotten that your parents came all the way from Thailand to fight for George Washington.” After a bit of silence, and given the chance to respond, Duckworth said that it was her father’s side of the family whose service went back to the American revolution. I later asked for some family details, and MATT McGRATH, spokesman for Duckworth, said Duckworth’s father, FRANK, was American, and served in both the Marine Corps and Army. He worked in international development and met Duckworth’s mother, LAMAI, who is Thai of Chinese descent, in Thailand. Duckworth was born in Bangkok. Jones, author of “The End of White Christian America,” The Atlantic published a video that shows how there’s been a decline in Americans who identify as white Christians in the last decade. His research shows that while 67 percent of Americans 65 years old or older identify as white Christians, only about 29 percent of people 18 to 29 feel the same. More so, Jones’ research shows that about 1 in 4 Americans today identify as religiously unaffiliated, a significant jump from the 1 in 10 who felt the same in the ’90s. According to Jones, Mitt Romney’s 2012 presidential run demonstrates how the lack of Christians have affected our nation. Though Romney had a significant amount of white evangelicals voting for him, it wasn’t enough to put him over the top so he could win the presidency. Jones said it was because there had been a decline over the years in that religious group who would have voted for him. But, the author pontificates that if Romney ran in 2004, there would have been enough white Christians in the country that could have secured him the White House. This trend has created something of a backlash, as Americans struggle to figure out their identity. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Despite not hosting a presidential candidate since 1992, Wheaton College has a rich history of hosting, producing and gaining support from prominent political leaders since its foundation by Jonathan Blanchard — who once ran for president himself — in 1860. Of all of Wheaton’s renowned visitors, perhaps the most impressive are the nine presidential candidates who visited Wheaton’s campus between 1960 and 1992. The first was Richard M. Nixon, the Vice President and 1960 Republican presidential candidate at the time. Nixon appeared at a rally on McCully field and, according to the Wheaton College Archives, encouraged the crowd to “strengthen the faith of America” and “see that young people grow up with faith in God.” Nixon later won the presidency. President Jimmy Carter was the last president to visit Wheaton. He delivered the February 1992 LeRoy H. Pfund Lecture. Other visitors with presidential aspirations included Margaret Chase Smith, the first woman to serve in both houses of Congress, 1964 Republican candidate Barry Goldwater, 1972 Democratic candidate George McGovern, President Ronald Reagan, President George H.W. Bush and the Reverend Jesse Jackson. Secretary of State William Jennings Bryan, a populist Democrat who ran for president in 1896, 1900 and 1908, was also a guest of Wheaton. Most recently, 2012 Republican Vice Presidential and current Speaker of the House Paul Ryan gave a speech at a Wheaton breakfast in spring of 2015. Many alumni have also gone on to become recognized public figures. Disgraced ex-Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert was a 1964 graduate. At one point, Hastert served in Congress alongside three other Wheaton graduates: Republican Indiana Senator Dan Coats ’65, Republican Michigan Representative Paul B. Henry ’63 and Democratic Washington Representative Jim McDermott ’58. Other alumni in politics include Michael Gerson ’86, chief speechwriter for President George W. Bush who helped write Bush’s memorable post-9/11 speeches. More infamously, David R. Young Jr. ’59 was a special assistant at the National Security Council in the Nixon Administration. Young co-founded the White House Special Investigations Unit — known as “The Plumbers” — known for breaking into a psychiatry office and later attempting to break into the Democratic National Committee offices at the Watergate complex, instigating the Watergate scandal. Additionally, several public figures have supported Wheaton financially in the past as Trustees. Owen Lovejoy was a founding Trustee of Wheaton College, U.S. Congressman and friend of Abraham Lincoln. A scholarship was later presented in his name. Another trustee, Salmon P. Chase, was a Senator, governor of Ohio, Secretary of the Treasury and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Chase was the great-great uncle of Wheaton’s sixth president and the great-great-great uncle of Ken Chase, current chair of the Communication department at Wheaton. He is also the face of the $10,000 bill. David Iglesias, current director of the Wheaton Center for Faith, Politics and Economics and professor of politics and law, graduated from Wheaton in 1980. In 2001, Iglesias was appointed the U.S. State Attorney for the District of New Mexico under the Bush administration. He also served in the U.S. Navy in 2008 as part of Operation Enduring Freedom as a terrorism and war crimes prosecutor and has held various other national and state positions. Iglesias said Wheaton helped prepare him for public service in three ways: “It gave me the confidence to speak in public; it gave me the Biblical basis for getting involved in the political process; it helped me organize my thoughts and ensure I was focusing on facts, not arguments.” Politics and international relations department chair and associate professor of politics Bryan McGraw said Wheaton tries to “prepare all of our students to exercise leadership in whatever field they choose to go into.” Specifically, Wheaton equips aspiring political leaders to use the gifts given to them to effect justice worldwide, according to McGraw. “We would hope that Wheaton graduates — and Christians more broadly — would be more likely to grasp that call clearly and have the freedom and courage to put it into effect.”)

Proft, a conservative radio host and 2010 candidate for governor in the Republican primary, has about $4 million in cash on hand to spend on campaigns, according to the most campaign finance filings with the Illinois State Board of Elections. Here’s a conversation with Proft, edited for length. . .Q. Do you see the DuPage GOP stronghold as eroding?  A. Clearly, DuPage is less competitive than it was when I was growing up. It’s self-inflicted wounds. It’s our own bad actors and bad actions. (FROM THE ARTICLE: “Build the wall” has become a rallying cry for millions of conservative Americans who feel left behind by an increasingly diverse America. And “build the wall” is exactly what a group of Loyola students did, but for a very different reason than some conservatives might. “It isn’t about some wall hundreds of miles away,” said junior Addison Mauck, who organized the Mock Border Wall project that was displayed on Loyola’s West Quad from Oct. 18–20. “The purpose of this project is to humanize the topic of immigration and combat the negative rhetoric of the current political season.” The words, “No human being is illegal” and “We are a nation of immigrants,” were displayed on hand-painted banners that hung from the wall’s steel fencing. Despite the project’s supportive message, it garnered harsh criticism from undocumented students who felt they weren’t given a voice in the installation. About 20 signs that read, “Majority of undocumented students were not consulted for this,” were posted on the wall in protest. “We had a student [in] our organization who represented the community of undocumented students because we do not want to force anyone to speak about something that can be very personal and private,” Mauck said in response to the criticism. That student to whom Mauck referred, who wished to remain anonymous because of the sensitive nature of her immigration status, said her role in the project was not very significant. “It raises the question of why more students weren’t reached out to by anyone other than me, because I was not an organizer of the project,” she said. “Our community, both undocumented and immigrant, does have a voice on campus, and other people should not be speaking for us.” Loyola has taken steps to support that community of undocumented students. In 2001, Loyola became involved in the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act, which provides a pathway to citizenship for children of undocumented parents. Since 2012, about 150 students and faculty have completed “Share the DREAM,” which is training to become an ally for undocumented students, offered by Loyola’s Department of Student Diversity and Multicultural Affairs (SDMA), said SDMA director Joe Saucedo. The training is a three-hour long session that covers DREAM Act legislation, the barriers undocumented students face and the personal stories that those students bring with them, according to Joe Saucedo. “It’s important to know that these students’ status of being undocumented is one aspect of who they are, but it’s not all of who they are,” Saucedo said. “[The training] indicates to someone who may carry those identities that this is a safe space and there are people who get them and understand.”  In order to make it easier for undocumented students to attend Loyola, students voted in 2015 to include a $2.50 fee to each student’s tuition, creating the Magis Scholarship Fund, which provides free tuition and housing to five undocumented students every year. One recipient of the scholarship, sophomore Vince Garcia, said he appreciated Loyola’s support of undocumented students but revealed that he hasn’t received any communication or resources from the university since receiving the scholarship. He said his academic advisor hasn’t completed the DREAM ally training. “I’d say they should communicate better, because I always have questions about health insurance, for example, and I feel like I don’t have anyone to talk to,” said Garcia, a social work major who wants to help undocumented students like himself get a head start. “I think we’re getting better at this. Part of our job is taking stock of the barriers that students face, and we try to bring in the students themselves and ask them how they feel,” said Saucedo. “The most important thing we can do, as people with citizenship privilege who can vote, is to continue to elect politicians who will support these programs and keep the interests of undocumented students in mind.”)

That’s one politically quirky result of a poll taken by Swapalease last month, which linked respondent’s political preferences to car choices. About 2,500 people participated in the unscientific, opt-in survey. When asked what kind of car best suited their personalities, Democrats were most likely to choose the Tesla, while Republicans saw themselves as ‘Vette-like. The Tesla/Corvette dichotomy also split down gender lines, as many men wanted Corvettes (no shock there) and women preferred Teslas. Other cars that registered on the “personality” list were big sellers such as the Honda Accord and Ford F-150 as well as the Hummer and the Chevrolet Volt. Granted, the results of the poll were tilted a bit, as the respondents were two-thirds male, while Republicans outnumbered Democrats by a 3-to-2 margin. When guessing which cars the presidential candidates would prefer to drive, the respondents said Republican candidate Donald Trump would drive a Cadillac Escalade, while Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton would choose a Mercedes-Benz GL Class. With the survey pool leaning Republican, 39 percent of those polled said they would vote for Trump, 36 percent would choose Clinton, and the rest would choose the always-elusive “Someone Else.” On that note, when given various choices to describe the “personality of this year’s election,” a third of those polled said “a driverless car.” As for how long the respondents said they’d keep their cars, most ranged from 21 to 36 months. Which is quite a bit shorter than a presidential term. Even with the unscientific methods at use here, we can perhaps learn a little something, since the connection between electric cars and Democrats has been seen before. But, naturally, we know that Republicans can like Tesla, too. Some of them even buy five of them. They just might be outliers.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Gov. Bruce Rauner’s administration is awarding one-time bonuses worth a total of between $3 million and $4 million to non-union workers whose bosses say are doing exceptional work. About 1,100 merit-compensation employees are in line to each receive a $3,016 bonus under the plan. “In an effort to recognize the hard work and dedication that non-bargaining unit employees demonstrate on a daily basis, coupled with the lack of systematic increases over the past several years, the state has authorized bonus payments for eligible non-bargaining unit employees,” Michael Hoffman, acting director of the Department of Central Management Services said in a memo to agency directors and others. “These bonuses do not make up for this unfair lack of wage increases for non-bargaining unit employees during previous administrations,” he said. “However, they do represent a commitment that, going forward, all employees will be treated equally, regardless of bargaining unit status.” Hoffman said the last across-the-board salary increase for non-bargaining unit employees was in 2005. The last merit pay program for them was in 2009. The memo says the bonuses are available to non-bargaining unit employees whose base salary as of July 1 was less than $100,000. Those earning more were not eligible. A number of other merit-comp employees were also excluded. Members of Rauner’s executive office were not eligible, nor were employees subject to Senate confirmation, those who left state employment before Sept. 16 and those who worked less than three months during the fiscal year that ended June 30. Rauner’s office said that left a potential pool of about 2,000 employees eligible for the bonus. In order to qualify, an employee had to receive an “exceptional” rating on his or her evaluation. Rauner’s office said about 1,100 employees got that rating. The size of the bonus was determined by adding all of the salaries of all non-bargaining unit employees making less than $100,000 a year, computing 2 percent of that and then dividing that amount by the number who actually qualified to receive it. That came to $3,016 for each of the workers who qualified. The administration has argued that a bonus system is cheaper than raises for the state in the long run because the payments are one-time and not built into a person’s base salary, and because they are not pensionable. The bonuses already have been issued to many, but not all, of the workers who qualify for them. The administration said it depends on how quickly individual agencies process them. Although the state is delaying payments to many organizations and vendors because of the traditional fall slowdown in tax collections, the bonus payments are being made. Rich Carter, spokesman for Comptroller Leslie Munger, said the bonus payments can’t be differentiated from regular payroll when agencies submit payroll information to the office for payment. “There’s nothing that says bonus on it,” he said. “They send us the payroll and we process the checks. As you know, we are required by court order right now to pay payroll on schedule.” In his memo, Hoffman said the bonus system is similar to one implemented in contract agreements the state has reached with 18 bargaining units representing state employees. Most of those workers belong to one of several Teamsters locals or trade unions. In those agreements, 2 percent of payroll was set aside to award performance bonuses. The administration and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, which represents about 38,000 state workers, still have not agreed on a new contract. The administration wants the union to accept a four-year wage freeze while also imposing a performance bonus plan. Bargaining stopped in January when state negotiators said they believed the talks were at an impasse. The Illinois Labor Relations Board is expected to rule on the issue next month. An administrative law judge who held hearings on the issue said she believed the two sides had reached impasse on some issues, but should continue bargaining over wages and benefits. ASFCME had no comment Friday on the administrations bonus payments to non-union workers.)
