CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
— New laws will encourage old vices  The proliferation of gambling and marijuana can have a deleterious effect on health. Both vices are addictive in nature. – Ned L. McCray, Tinley Park
https://chicago.suntimes.com/2019/12/10/21004979/sun-times-letters-legal-gambling-marijuana-illinois-recreational-pot-vices
(FROM THE LETTER: Most laws have an impact, one way or another, on a person’s job or his pocketbook. The new laws in Illinois, expanding legal gambling and the legal use of marijuana, will do the same. But they also will threaten our health and physical well-being. The new laws have been touted as answers to our state’s fiscal crisis, creating many jobs, but at what cost? History has shown that the proliferation of gambling and marijuana can have a deleterious effect on one’s health. Both are addictive in nature. Most forms of gambling are stacked against the participant; the odds are bad. Legalized gambling generally is a waste of time and money. Marijuana alters a person’s mood and introduces harmful substances into the lungs and body that can lead to dependency and the use of more powerful drugs. These two laws will do nothing to uplift society. They will be of harm to future generations.)

NEWS CHANNEL 20
— Charges you could face for smoking cannabis around kids – Nikki McGee
https://newschannel20.com/news/local/charges-you-could-face-for-smoking-cannabis-around-kids
(FROM THE ARTICLE: With the legalization of marijuana, law enforcement is warning parents to stay on the side of caution when using it at home. As marijuana’s legalization rolls out, the law is defining where it can and cannot be used. While you can smoke and pose it behind closed doors, rules change if you have children in the house. “You cannot knowingly use in close proximity [around] anyone under 21 years of age,” Illinois “Weed Lawyer” W. Scott Hanken said. Any marijuana kept in your house must also be in a pre-packaged, childproof container and kept out of reach. “It’s not a good idea to expose them to a mind-altering substance and we know there can be secondhand smoke that could be inhaled by the cannabis,” Sangamon County Sheriff Campbell said. “So it’s vital that if the parents are going to partake in this, that they don’t expose their children to it.” Sheriff Campbell said his department already investigates cases where they are tipped off about a child smelling like cannabis and sometimes even meth-making chemicals. It’s something they can take action on. “We would look at the totality of the circumstances and determine whether or not the parent was endangering the life or safety of a child,” Sheriff Campbell said. “At that time, we would decide whether or not to either immediately arrest them or to file charges through the state’s attorney’s office.” Mandated reporters, like teachers, are required to report suspected child neglect or endangerment to law enforcement. You also need to be careful if you watch other children. “If you also happen to have a child daycare in that residence, obviously you cannot use it or consume it there,” Hankin said. Any marijuana kept in the house must also be in a prepackaged, childproof container. In other words, kept out of reach. Although you can smoke on private property… Legally it can’t be around your child. The sheriff is also concerned about edibles, which are often packaged as treats like candy or baked goods. He especially wants parents to keep these items secure, since they might look tempting to a child.)

However, prioritizing the interests of the 1% reduces competition and investment, increases economic insecurity and undermines democratic participation.)

ABC7 is awaiting comment from the Illinois GOP and offices of a few Republican congressmen on Sunday’s protest. (DIERSEN: Jobs always exist for those who are able-bodied. https://qconline.com/opinion/columnists/column-a-rapidly-approaching-future/article_9f5505a5-e611-51f9-94ee-8dd18838b9c2.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: No matter what side you take on Trump Impeachment Theater, or just about any other topic for that matter — from the politics of chicken sandwiches to climate change — if you dare challenge the views of the reigning political priests, chances are you’ll be called stupid and hateful. And someone will want to shut you up. The traditional American response to such silencing has always been: “This is a free country, isn’t it?” But is it now? Or are we building a new “Animal Farm,” where we are told what to think and how to think it? These are the central questions in “No Safe Spaces,” a profoundly important new film about free speech and thought by conservative radio host Dennis Prager and Adam Carolla, the libertarian comic and podcast superstar.)

DAILY HERALD
— What inclusiveness means to me – Vincent J. Heaton Jr., Wheaton
https://www.dailyherald.com/discuss/20191207/what-inclusiveness-means-to-me
(FROM THE LETTER: State Rep. Terra Costa Howard defended her rationale for inviting author Robin Stevenson back to speak in DuPage County, saying, “We are showing the world that our communities embrace the values of honesty, respect and inclusiveness.” This blatant, backhanded, stereotyping of persons daring to hold positions differing from our “modern” society as being, “dishonest, disrespectful, and exclusionist” underscores a real problem that permeates our social, political and business cultures.)
— New Illinois Harassment Training Law Set to Take Effect January 1 – Jim Mitchell (DIERSEN: The federal government requires all its employees to take lots of such training. I worked for the federal government 1966-1969 and 1971-1997. The training hints/implies/argues/shouts that a) Whites are racists, b) men are sexists, c) older people are bad, d) conservative people are bad, e) Protestants are bad, f) Republicans are bad, g) German Americans are bad, f) rich people are bad, g) draft avoiders are bad, h) those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time are bad, i) etc.)

I washed dishes for the minimum wage November 1964 – May 1966 in the basement of the S.S. Kresges in Chicago Heights. Needless-to-say, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes would never have stooped to take such a job. — They Were Warned – Kathy Valente (DIERSEN: QUESTION TO ASK CANDIDATES: What have you done and what will you do to discourage the sale and use of pot?)
https://illinoisfamily.org/uncategorized/they-were-warned/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Big Marijuana and its foolish proponents easily convinced Illinois state lawmakers that legalization would decrease black market trade and ease the burden on our criminal justice system. IFI warned them that this naive notion was contradicted by the facts, and we shared ample evidence from states that had already approved “recreational” marijuana. The evidence is clear: the black market had been thriving because of legalization. Now we read that the California cannabis industry is in big trouble and want lawmakers to do something about it. What’s their problem? The black market is doing 73 percent of California’s marijuana business – or $8.7 billion. California is considered to be the largest cannabis market in the world. While 2019 is not yet over, it’s estimated that their total marijuana sales will top nearly $12 billion. Yes, the black market is thriving on the left coast, growing by leaps and bounds, and threatening to bury a quasi-legitimate (sic) industry. So much for the influx of revenue they’re anticipating.)

Only two shared the full numbers. – Renae Merle and Jena McGregor (DIERSEN: While I worked for the federal government for almost 30 years, my superiors were always under tremendous pressure from Democrat politicians a) to hire, retain and promote young Democrat minorities and young Democrat females and b) to make way for them by getting rid of their employees who were Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran.)

FORBES
— The Impact Of Unemployment On Male Well-Being – Adi Gaskell (DIERSEN: I have been underemployed since 1976 and unemployed since 1997.)
https://www.forbes.com/sites/adigaskell/2019/12/06/the-impact-of-unemployment-on-male-wellbeing/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The impact of unemployment on well-being is well documented, although research from a few years ago suggested that it’s “good work” rather than just work that is the key to mental well-being. With the traditional gender roles presenting the role of men as the bread winner for the family, it seems logical that unemployment would pose a particular burden on men, and that was the subject of a recent report from the IZA World of Labor. The report reveals that the number of working-age men outside the labor force is on the rise around the world, with this corresponding with a rise in stress and other mental health issues, including depression and anger. Indeed, male unemployment is also linked to a range of physical health concerns, including suicide and substance abuse that are raising mortality rates across the United States. The researchers believe the issues of male unemployment are strongest among low-skilled labor, with those in work also suffering from declining wages and status. This often ultimately results in men dropping out of the labor force entirely. Many of the issues facing unemployed men revolve around a loss of hope, and such issues were consistent around the world. That many unemployed men resort to opioid abuse merely exacerbates their slide into poor mental well-being. This is often accompanied by marriage failure and a decline in civic or religious participation. One’s social standing was a key factor in this, as the image and self-esteem of many working class men is wrapped up in their hard work ethic, so being unemployed carries considerable stigma.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Should just being “employed” make people/workers happy? On one level, any job is better than no job. But we also derive much of our identities and self-esteem from our work. If you aren’t happy with it, you’re probably not happy generally. Unhappy people can still vote and are often easy marks for shameless politicians to manipulate. Their spending patterns change, too. So it ends up affecting everyone and everything. Unhappy Employment There’s this plight of people who, while not necessarily poor, aren’t where they think they should be—and perhaps once were. This disappointment isn’t just in their minds; the economy really has changed. Yes, you can probably get a job if you are physically able, but the odds it will support you and a family, if you have one, are lower than they once were.)

Even though much of what I had done working for IRS for almost 9 years was similar to what I would be doing working for GAO, to justify forcing me to accept a $19,568 (21%) pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer, my Democrat IRS and GAO superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates painted my transferring from IRS to GAO as being a career change. They ignored, belittled, badmouthed, demonized, denigrated, and condemned the fact that I had a) passed the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979, b) almost completed the requirements for a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul, and c) earned an MBA from Loyola in 1976. They would not have done that if I had been a Democrat, minority, female, or veteran.)

FORBES
— AARP Spikes Investigation Into Age Discrimination By The U.S. Government – Patricia Barnes (DIERSEN: According to my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes in the Milton Township Republican Central Committee, DuPage County Republican Central Committee, Illinois Republican Party, Wheaton, Wheaton Chamber of Commerce, etc., a) the federal government has never engaged in any kind of political affiliation discrimination, reverse discrimination, age discrimination, or retaliation and b) all the adverse actions that my Democrat Post Office, IRS, and GAO superiors took against me were justified because I am a White supremacist, Nazi, KKK member, hater, racist, sexist, bigot, and even worse things who should be gotten rid of once and for all.)
https://www.forbes.com/sites/patriciagbarnes/2019/12/02/the-aarp-spikes-investigation-into-age-discrimination-by-the-us-government/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The AARP has spiked the publication of an investigative story about systemic age discrimination in recruitment and hiring by the U.S. government. The 4,000-word story is one of two articles that the AARP commissioned for the January 2020 edition of the AARP Bulletin. The other story, said to be an overview of age discrimination in employment, is still slated for publication. The AARP, which has 38 million dues paying members, did not respond on Sunday to requests for comment by email and telephone. Why would the AARP, which claims to advocate for Americans aged 50+, jettison an important story about age discrimination in hiring by the U.S. government? A source close to the matter, who asked not to be identified, said senior officials at the AARP killed the story due to political considerations and to avoid risking the loss of federal grant funding. The AARP in 2017 was awarded $74.4 million for job training services from the U.S. Department of Labor and $9.6 million from the Internal Revenue Service to provide tax assistance to seniors. According to Axios, the AARP is one of the largest media companies in the country, earning more than $174 million annually in media-based advertising revenue. The AARP Bulletin has the 2nd-highest circulation in the country. The AARP and its nine subsidiaries earned an estimated $1.65 billion in annual revenue in 2018. Age Discrimination Little media attention has been paid to the federal government’s role in perpetuating age discrimination in the United States. Since 2012, the U.S. Office of Personnel Management’s (OPM) has operated a program called the Pathways “Recent Graduates” Program that permits federal agencies to discriminate based on age in the recruitment and hiring of workers. The program was created by former President Barack Obama in 2010 through Executive Order #13562. It allows federal agencies to restrict applications for job vacancies to individuals who graduated from a qualified educational institution within the preceding two years. The program not only harms older workers by arbitrarily excluding them from federal jobs but it sends a message to the private sector that age discrimination is acceptable. Pursuant to a 2017 Freedom of Information Act request, the OPM said about 93 percent of applicants hired for 92,193 jobs under the Pathway “Recent Graduate” Program from 2012 to 2017 were under the age of 40. The Pathways “Recent Graduates” Program is a classic example of “disparate impact discrimination,” where a seemingly neutral policy has disproportionate and adverse impact on older workers. The OPM has said the program will continue until it is invalidated by a sitting president. So far President Trump has shown no inclination to halt the program. A source said the remaining AARP article refers briefly to age discrimination by the federal government. Political Headwinds The AARP increasingly finds itself in difficulty due to its conflicting roles as the self-proclaimed advocate for older Americans and as the leading purveyor of supplemental health insurance to older Americans who are Medicare recipients.)
