— Illinois GOP facing dire financial straits – Rich Miller
https://chicago.suntimes.com/politics/jb-pritzker-campaign-spending-democrats-illinois-republicans-dire-financial-straits/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Democratic Party of Illinois ended the year with about $1.4 million in the bank. The Illinois Republican Party finished with $313,000. The IL GOP is going to have to be frugal for a while until they can raise some dough. Rauner has been the state GOP’s most reliable donor. The former governor contributed $36.9 million to the state party since June 13th of 2014. The party raised another $20 million or so on top of that since that same date, but a large chunk of that money was pass-through cash from the two legislative caucuses for direct mail costs. The unofficial leader of the Republican Party’s wealthy Chicago-area “donor class” was Ron Gidwitz. He helped raise a ton of money for his party over the years. But Gidwitz is now the US Ambassador to Belgium, so he can’t do them any good. Bottom line: The Republican Party in this state is in very dire straits.)

DUPAGE POLICY JOURNAL
— Wheaton Bowl owner Sal Falbo says he was targeted by Council candidate Bray-Parker – Glenn Minnis (DIERSEN: In 2002, I succeeded in getting the Milton Township Republican Central Committee (MTRCC) to hold its monthly meetings in the Wheaton Bowl Banquet Hall and the MTRCC has held its monthly meetings there ever since.)
https://dupagepolicyjournal.com/stories/511739295-wheaton-bowl-owner-says-he-was-targeted-by-council-candidate-bray-parker
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Sal Falbo thinks Erica Bray-Parker could use a new lesson plan. “I don’t think her actions were the right thing to be teaching her students,” Falbo told the DuPage Policy Journal as rumors of Bray-Parker’s attempting to bully him and other business owners in Wheaton into removing signs from their properties that were for political candidates she doesn’t agree with continue to swirl. “We all have a right to freedom of speech, and as a teacher you would think she would know and understand that,” he added. According to local business owner Jane Shaw, all the drama began when Bray-Parker, who teaches at Glenbard North and is an instructor at the Civics Club, penned a letter to Falbo and other local business owners demanding that they remove posters of former state Rep. Jeanne Ives, a Republican of Wheaton, from in front of their businesses, vowing never to return to their establishments if they failed to comply. Bray-Parker, who is running for Wheaton City Council in District 4, is also accused of using her students as part of her “bullying” campaign, Shaw added. “I don’t live in Wheaton but if I did there’s no way I would vote for her,” said Faldo, part owner of Wheaton Bowl. “She’s obviously an activist, but part of the responsibility in that is understanding that everyone has the same free speech rights that you do. On top of that, the signs she was complaining about weren’t even on my property; they were in front. She’s really made an issue out of a nonissue.” Meanwhile, Ives, who relinquished her seat in Springfield with the start of the legislative session, has been adamant in expressing her opinion that she doesn’t think what she calls Bray-Parker’s brand of politics is right for Wheaton. “Erica Bray-Parker should not be elected; make sure she isn’t,” she told the DuPage Policy Journal. “She is unfit to represent business owners and the respectful, hard-working taxpayers of Wheaton. She is a civics teacher who is not civil.” Bray-Parker also raised eyebrows in May 2018, when she penned a letter in the Daily Herald assailing Peter Breen, a Republican of Lombard who was a state representative at the time, over what she perceived to be his inadequate stance on the issue of gun control.)

PRAIRIE STATE WIRE
— McGlasson discouraged by lack of response to meeting request – W.J. Kennedy (DIERSEN: What do the following have to say about this: your Republican Precinct Committeeman/Captain, the officers of your Republican township, ward, and/or county party organizations, your representative on the Illinois Republican Party (IRP) State Central Committee, the IRP officers, the IRP National Committeeman, and the IRP National Committeewoman?)
https://prairiestatewire.com/stories/511740588-mcglasson-discouraged-by-lack-of-response-to-meeting-request
(FROM THE ARTICLE: All that Republican Committeeman John McGlasson says he is likely to get out of his call for a special meeting of the state GOP after the shellacking the party took in November is a chance to speak his mind at the party’s regularly scheduled meeting on Feb. 9 in Bolingbrook. If he can make his way onto the agenda. “Never heard back from anyone,” McGlasson, referring to his request for a special meeting, told Prairie State Wire. “I’m completely discouraged. I’ll try to give my viewpoints at the regular party meeting, if I get a chance.” The conservative McGlasson, committeeman from the 16th Congressional District, seconded fellow Committeeman’s Sean Morrison’s call for a special meeting after the embarrassing revelation in mid-December that Bruce Rauner sought someone to take his place on the ballot soon after his near loss to former State Rep. Jeanne Ives, a Republican of Wheaton, in the March primary. Again, he heard nothing. “We should be out looking hard for someone to challenge (U.S. Senator Dick) Durbin in 2020,” he said. “A good, enthusiastic candidate will help other candidates in down-ticket races. Maybe we could take a few of the House seats back. But they seem to be content with the way things are.” McGlasson needs five of the 18 Republican Central Committee members to call a special meeting of the party. He says with Bob Winchester’s legal claim for his Committee spot in the 15th Congressional District still in legal limbo, he doesn’t have them. “It is my opinion that the party needs to return to its roots as expressed in our party platform,” he said. “And we need to search for a leader that will lead us back to the basics of conservatism.” McGlasson said that a move is on to have Ives speak in Bolingbrook, but she told the Prairie State Wire that she has yet to receive an invitation. “I would tell them that they are disorganized and rudderless,” Ives said. “We need a fiscal contract with Illinoisans and a strategy to carry it out.” “We need new leadership,” she added, “after that bloodbath in November, and (the) revelation about Rauner. They (party leaders) can’t claim ignorance about that. He’s been funding the party for years.”)

MILITARY TIMES
— Women in the military draft, or dump the system altogether? New report looks at radical options – Leo Shane III (DIERSEN: How has the draft impacted you? In 1966, when I was 18 years old, notwithstanding the fact that my eyesight could not be corrected to 20/20, I had partial red/green color blindness, and I had Osgood-Schlatter disease (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osgood%E2%80%93Schlatter_disease), I was classified 1-A for the draft. I obtained my first student draft deferment in 1966 when I was 18 years old, and ever since then, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have demonized me, denigrated me, and condemned me as being a draft dodger. In 1970, when I was 21 years old and had earned a bachelor’s degree in management from NIU, employers were extremely reluctant to hire me because they fully expected that I would be drafted. They did not believe that my application for a financial hardship draft deferment would be granted, but it was granted, and then, because of my draft lottery number, I was no longer subject to the draft. My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have always hinted/implied/argued/shouted a) that instead of me, the Post Office should have hired a veteran in 1966, b) that the Post Office should gotten rid of me much sooner than it did so that a veteran could have my job, c) that instead of me, IRS should have hired a veteran in 1971, d) that instead of me, IRS should have promoted veterans in 1972, 1973, and 1974, e) that instead of me, GAO should have hired a veteran in 1980, f) that instead of me, GAO should have promoted a veteran in 1986, and g) that GAO should have gotten rid of me much sooner than it did so that a veteran could have my job and my preferred corner office.)

https://www.dailyherald.com/article/20190122/news/301229872/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: President Donald Trump says he directed White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders not to bother with the traditional daily briefing of reporters. The last briefing took place on Dec. 18. In a tweet on Tuesday, the president said the press covers Sanders “so rudely & inaccurately, in particular certain members of the press. “I told her not to bother, the word gets out anyway!” he tweeted. “Most will never cover us fairly & hence, the term, Fake News!” The afternoon briefing has been a staple of cable news schedules during the past few administrations and the sight of Sanders’ predecessor Sean Spicer at the podium was an enduring image of the early days of Trump’s tenure. The White House Correspondents Association called the decision a retreat from transparency and accountability that sets a terrible precedent.)

https://www.wsj.com/articles/companies-manipulate-glassdoor-by-inflating-rankings-and-pressuring-employees-11548171977
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Last summer, employees of Guaranteed Rate Inc. posted a stream of negative reviews about the mortgage broker on Glassdoor, a company-ratings website. “An American sweatshop,” read a one-star review in June. “Worst company I ever worked for,” read another in July. The company’s rating on Glassdoor, which is determined by employee feedback, fell to 2.6 stars out of 5. Concerned that negative reviews could hurt recruiting, Guaranteed Rate CEO Victor Ciardelli instructed his team to enlist employees likely to post positive reviews, said a person familiar with his instructions. In September and October these employees flooded Glassdoor with hundreds of five-star ratings. The company rating now sits at 4.1. Glassdoor has become an important arbiter of employee sentiment in today’s highly competitive job market. A Wall Street Journal investigation shows it can be manipulated by employers trying to sway opinion in their favor.)

PITTSBURG POST GAZETTE
— Why ageism hurts men more than women – JULIA CARPENTER (DIERSEN: All my critics/opponents, all their operatives, and all their dupes promote age discrimination a) to get rid of those who are older than they are and/or b) to curry favor with those who promote age discrimination.)
https://www.post-gazette.com/news/aging-edge/2019/01/22/Why-ageism-hurts-men-more-than-women/stories/201901220156
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Age bias can be subtle — a whispered comment, a snide dig, an errant thought. Or it can show up in more overt behaviors — a forgotten meeting invite, a blatant preference for a younger colleague or even hiring discrimination. But new research shows that age bias doesn’t affect men and women equally. In fact, older men face harsher penalties than older women. Battling stereotypes By 2022, 25 percent of the American workforce is estimated to be comprised of workers age 55 and older, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. But claims of age-based discrimination are already on the rise, says Michael North, assistant professor of management and organizations at New York University. Comparing the number of age discrimination complaints filed to the EEOC in 1999 to the number of claims now shows that the problem isn’t going away. This tension in modern workplaces, Mr. North says, often involves younger employees viewing older employees as overly aggressive, or selfishly refusing to step down from the C-suite and leadership roles. The stereotypical version of this kind of older worker — who continues to work past retirement age, sowing discord among younger employees who covet the senior position — is usually male. Part of that stereotype stems from a dearth of older women in senior roles. “One thing we’re really seeing is a lot of dominant older men people think aren’t willing to step aside, and you see resource constraints with millennials trying to get jobs, and we’re thinking of male CEOs refusing to relinquish power — so I think the exemplars are men,” says Ashley Martin, an assistant professor of organizational behavior at Stanford Graduate School of Business. “So when people harbor this age bias, they’re thinking ‘These men need to get out of the way.’ And women are forgotten — which allows them to escape.”)

NEWS TRIBUNE
— Divided America: Traditional values now scorned – ROBERT HUMPHRIES, Puyallup
https://www.thenewstribune.com/opinion/letters-to-the-editor/article224939410.html
(FROM THE LETTER: We already have a wall, but it divides Americans rather than defending our border. Deja vu, it’s1860 all over again, and we know where that led after the flash points of Harpers Ferry and Fort Sumpter. Anyone who would declare that our nation was built on the foundations of Western European civilization is now considered a racist. That alone confirms there is a deep schism/high wall already established within our nation. On one side are those who desire to defend the culture, religion and traditions that created the greatest form of self-governance (even with all its flaws) mankind has ever devised. On the other side are those who fervently dig at its very foundation, guided by their “diverse” cultures (or worse, the failed ideology of Lenin, Stalin, Mao or Che). One can only ask: When and where will there be a defining flash point? Certainly the verbiage of many elected Democratic members of Congress loudly proclaim in “political correct” terms that they are pushing for one — in their active support of illegal aliens flooding across open borders, or in their attacks on the 2nd Amendment.)

HUFFINGTON POST
— Passenger Confronts GOP Congressman Rodney Davis Over Flying First Class During Shutdown “Do you think it’s appropriate?” he asked the lawmaker. “Taking that as a yes.” – Akbar Shahid Ahmed
https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/rodney-davis-flying-first-class-ggovernment-shutdown_us_5c477fe1e4b083c46d634be8
(FROM THE ARTICLE: With President Donald Trump and the GOP prolonging the partial government shutdown, a Republican lawmaker had an uncomfortable run-in Tuesday when a fellow airplane passenger found him flying first class from Chicago to Washington, D.C., according to a video of the encounter shared with HuffPost. “Congressman, do you think it’s appropriate to fly first class while 57 TSA agents aren’t being paid?” the person says to Rep. Rodney Davis (R-Ill.), in an apparent reference to the Transportation Security Administration’s 57,000 employees, who are being required to work without pay. A tipster who asked to remain anonymous shared the video with HuffPost, which hasn’t been able to identify the person who approached Davis. Davis remained silent, prompting the person to say, “Taking that as a yes.” “Taxpayers paid for this flight? Fair enough,” he added. Members of Congress can have the government pay for regular flights to and from their home jurisdictions, as maintaining constituency contact is part of their job. Unlike the paychecks of TSA workers, as well as those of hundreds of thousands of other federal government workers affected by the shutdown, those paid flights do not go away during a government shutdown. Davis did not use his taxpayer-provided budget to purchase a first-class ticket and has never done so, his spokeswoman Ashley Phelps told HuffPost in an email. His office bought a regular coach ticket, but he was upgraded automatically because of his frequent flyer status, she added. “There was no additional cost to taxpayers.” Accepting the upgrade is not a violation of anti-corruption rules because it’s something available to any person who accrues a certain number of miles and wasn’t offered exclusively to Davis because of his position as an elected representative, an ethics officer in the House, who asked to speak on background since the episode is not under any official investigation, told HuffPost. All the same, for someone with power over people’s paychecks to enjoy a luxe experience amid mass economic disruption makes for a jarring sight. A photograph of Davis in the first class section of the plane made it into Politico’s Playbook PM newsletter on Tuesday. Most of the GOP has stood with President Donald Trump during the shutdown, arguing that he’s right to reject deals to reopen the government until he gets the funding he wants for his promised wall on the border with Mexico. Davis has frequently supported the party on the issue, according to the Chicago Sun-Times, and praised Trump’s approach. But the congressman recently sided with Democrats on bills to reopen some agencies ― a nod, perhaps, to his political vulnerability, given his tight re-election in the 2018 midterms.)

— The Left Won’t Allow a Peaceful Separation – Christopher Roach
https://amgreatness.com/2019/01/21/the-left-wont-allow-a-peaceful-separation/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The divergence of the desires and needs of the nation’s interior and those of the coastal ruling class has become more pronounced since the election of Trump. Even the “respectable” Democrats, exemplified by Hillary Clinton, have a barely concealed contempt for middle America. She, of course, infamously labeled Trump supporters a “basket of deplorables.” But Obama himself earlier let the mask slip, dismissing religion and guns as a false consciousness, to which the working class “clings bitterly” as transferred aggression from their economic and social decline. Perhaps this insulting language is so casual and automatic, because this is also how the Republican Party has treated its voters. Until Trump, the GOP saw itself as one wing of a responsible governing class. All the talk of shrinking the government and the culture war was just overheated rhetoric that no one in power seriously believed. The party’s leadership functioned to divert its voters discontent into an agenda more palatable to the ruling class. Thus, every campaign sounded like the second coming of Paul Revere, but in the end, the practical outcome was some work on the margins related to tax cuts. For issues like gay marriage, abortion, immigration, crime, and affirmative action, the Republican leadership mostly tried to avoid them altogether. After every electoral loss, the solution was to be less divisive and to focus on economic issues. This was the party leadership’s official recommendation following Mitt Romney’s loss in 2012, as if this milquetoast establishment hack’s defeat was the result of him being too conservative. The friction between the coasts and the interior is not merely political; it’s cultural, religious, economic, and demographic. The intensity of the friction has led, in recent times, to the suggestion we may be on the brink of a kind of civil war. We see hints of similar divisions in Europe, where Brexit and the Gilets Jaunes protests are fundamentally populist and have occasioned maniacal responses by the ruling class. Separation Would Be Preferable to the Current Hostilities  One solution proffered from time to time is a peaceful separation. Observers on the Right and the Left have suggested that the rift is simply too deep and serious to be resolved, and that the mutual interest of everyone concerned would benefit by a divorce, whether deemed secession or an invigoration of local autonomy or something else. . .The Left Is Totalitarian By Nature Leftism is not simply one opinion among many. For the Left’s votaries, it’s closer to a religion. It’s not enough that one is himself a vegan, drives a Prius, doesn’t own guns, rejects the traditional family, or anything else that goes with the lifestyle. It is essential that everyone else does so. Any deviations are “backwardness” and “divisive” or worse.)

The 12 murals created in the 1880s by Luis Gregori were intended to encourage immigrants who had come to the U.S. during a period of anti-Catholic sentiment. (FROM THE ARTICLE: His lack of public empathy for unpaid federal workers echoes his treatment of some construction workers, contractors and lawyers whom he refused to pay for their work on his real estate projects. The plight of the farmers and small-business owners wilting without the financial support pledged by his administration harks back to the multiple lenders and investors who financed Mr. Trump’s business ventures only to come up shortchanged. And his ever-changing positions (I’ll own the shutdown; you own the shutdown; the wall could be steel; it must be concrete; then again, it could be steel) have left heads in both parties spinning. Even after his televised proposal on Saturday to break the deadlock, Mr. Trump has no progress to show.)

LISLE TOWNSHIP REPUBLICAN ORGANIZATION
— The Lisle Township Republican Organization is outraged by recent comments made by our newly elected State Representative Anne Stava-Murray. Impugning the residents of Naperville who have worked tirelessly to make Naperville a great place to live for people of all races and religions is reprehensible. Rep. Anne Stava-Murray’s baseless attacks on Naperville highlight her lack of interest in serving her constituents. She has stated that she is already running for another office even before she begins her term in the General Assembly. If she is so disinterested in serving and holds her constituents in such disdain she should resign and let someone who wants to work for all the residents be the State Representative from the 81st District. On behalf of her constituents and all the residents of the City of Naperville, we demand an apology from Rep. Stava-Murray and call on her colleagues in the General Assembly to publicly
censure her extremist attacks. – Jay Fisher, Chairman, LTRO

SPRINGFIELD STATE JOURNAL REGISTER
— Springfield police set to start camera program with public – Crystal Thomas
https://www.sj-r.com/news/20190119/springfield-police-set-to-start-camera-program-with-public
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Springfield will soon join several Illinois cities that have a voluntary program in which residents can register their private cameras to help out police. Police Chief Kenny Winslow told the City Council this past week that the registration will be available through the Springfield Police Department’s website in February. Residents who own private exterior cameras would enter information, like their address and a way to contact them, into a portal on the website. That information would be uploaded into a spreadsheet, which would plot all of the registered private security cameras on a map. Police officers would have access to this information and would be able to contact camera owners afterward if a crime occurred nearby. “We can send an alert via email or have detectives just call,” Winslow said. Winslow said the camera owners would be able to send in the footage through evidence.com, which is an encrypted hosting site that the city already uses. Or, a police officer could review the footage with the homeowner. Winslow said police are more likely to apprehend a suspect if they get information quickly after a crime. Plus, Winslow said the camera network could act as a deterrent to crime happening in the first place. “It will hopefully lead to more investigatory leads on crimes, or hopefully a better apprehension rate or maybe even a reduction (in crime),” Winslow said. “We just have to figure it out how to better market it to have good participation.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: After I’d been writing a column for a few years, a male boss gave me a T-shirt depicting the Furies swooping. He didn’t mean it as a compliment. The three sisters, the “infernal goddesses” of ancient mythology born from the blood shed by Uranus when he was castrated by his son, were known for relentlessly hounding men. But the Furies took vengeance on wicked men who hurt women and swore false oaths. So I took it as a compliment. The capital has suddenly been infused with the spirit of the Furies. After many false springs and discouraging backlashes, we are finally experiencing a revolutionary assertion of women’s power that is transforming Congress. “Kill Bill”-style, the fiery Democratic women keep coming, driven by vengeance against the wicked man in the White House with the history of hurting women and swearing false oaths.)

Those who run Facebook want those who are religious, conservative, and/or Republican to lose. Ever-increasingly, they erroneously assume that if they post something on Facebook, everyone will see it. Ever-increasingly, they stop publishing websites, stop updating their websites, and stop sending out emails. That is exactly what Democrats, Libertarians, Greens, and RINOs want them to do.)
https://www.gainesvilletimes.com/columnists/shannon-casas-how-younger-generations-get-their-news-and-why-matters/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A little more than 10 years ago, distributing news by way of Facebook, Snapchat or any other social media was unheard of; it’s one of the most transformational shifts in the way we consume news. And it’s a driving force in how vastly different news consumption habits are and will be for millennials and younger. Older generations seek out news, for example setting aside time to read the morning paper, while millennials’ are more likely to bump into a story on social media. They don’t necessarily spend less time reading news. Some 85 percent of them report that keeping up with news is at least somewhat important to them and 69 percent get news daily, according to the American Press Institute. But they consume that news throughout their day across multiple platforms — a click on a Facebook link here, viewing an Instagram post there, watching a video on YouTube their friend shared, and so forth. And the large majority of it is done on their cellphones. I’ll point out here that much of this column was tapped out on my phone. “News and information are woven into an often continuous but mindful way that Millennials connect to the world generally, which mixes news with social connection, problem solving, social action, and entertainment,” according to the American Press Institute research. This trend continues with the next generation, those born after 1995: “Media consumption for Gen Z’s is embedded in their daily lives so they are not even consciously making a decision to consume content,” according to a Forbes article.)

https://www.nwaonline.com/news/2019/jan/20/age-discrimination-a-moral-embarassment/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: When you dive into popular literature on retirement, you could be forgiven for thinking there are hordes of Americans in their late 50s or early 60s desperate to leave the paid workforce as soon as they can. Blog posts and academic studies beg people to hold off on collecting Social Security until the age of 70 so they can maximize their benefits. There is Bloomberg Businessweek’s article “Not prepared for retirement? Here’s a solution. Don’t retire.” And Inc.’s “Want to Retire Early? Here are 3 Reasons You Probably Shouldn’t.” Few listen. The most common age to file for Social Security is 62. Why? Well, many of these people are not downscaling their professional lives or exiting the workforce entirely because they want to do so. They are likely victims of age discrimination. That’s the searing conclusion that can be drawn from a recently released joint Urban Institute-ProPublica analysis of data from the Social Security Administration and National Institute on Aging’s joint longitudinal Health and Retirement Study. The researchers behind the report found a majority of workers over the age of 50 are likely at some point to be shoved out of their jobs, either via an overt firing or resignation under pressure of demotions, loss of future benefits or deteriorating work conditions. The damage to their bottom line is often permanent. When many find new positions, they are often jobs that are significantly below both their skill levels and previous pay grades, such as the former corporate executive ProPublica discovered working at a print shop, as a bartender, and staffing the front desk at a local gym. Making matters worse: The retirement prospects for many younger baby boomers and members of Generation X look dismal as the shift from workplace pensions to the do-it-yourself 401(k) has left millions of people without the resources to maintain even a semblance of their current lifestyle in retirement. As a result, surveys say a majority of Americans plan to work well past the traditional retirement age, with many claiming they will collect a paycheck till they drop.)

https://dupagepolicyjournal.com/stories/511723792-stava-murray-says-naperville-has-white-supremacist-policies
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Just days into her new job as a state representative, Anne Stava-Murray (D-Naperville) has managed to cause a stir among her constituents by characterizing her hometown of Naperville as having “white supremacist policies.” Her remarks about Naperville came in a Facebook response to a post by Felicia Palumbo, who in early January wrote that “Naperville is the biggest bullies … horrible.” “I know and I am so sorry,” Stava-Murray replied on her “Anne Stava-Murray for U.S. Senate” Facebook page. “I actually wanted to move to Oak Park but stayed to work on my community. Our history of white supremacist policies is ongoing.” Stava-Murray did not respond to multiple requests from the DuPage Policy Journal seeking substantiation for her comments—any evidence that Naperville ever, or currently has, white supremacist policies. A white supremacist Naperville was news to Mayor Steve Chirico. “I would never characterize Naperville in this way,” Chirico told the Policy Journal, “but I realize that people have many different perceptions and views.” Twenty-three-year Naperville resident Richard Strawbridge said he couldn’t imagine where Stava-Murray’s comments were coming from. “I’m unaware of any so-called white supremacist policies,” Strawbridge, an attorney, said, “and I’m very active in the local community. “In fact,” he continued, “my impression is that the Naperville community as a whole tries to be very fair and inclusive. Are there individual idiots out there who buck this trend? I’m guessing there are. But to paint the entire community with this broad and defamatory characterization is unworthy of a public official in the absence of some actual evidence. These kinds of comments from any part of the political spectrum only serve to divide people and to impeded constructive dialogue.” Stava-Murray is expected to appear, with other members of the General Assembly, at a legislative forum hosted by the Naperville Area Homeowners Confederation on Saturday at the Naperville Municipal Center. “Every January, we invite our local state senators and representatives to share their views on what we can expect from Springfield in the upcoming year,” an announcement of the event on the Homeowners website said. “With representatives from both sides of the political aisle, and several new faces, this should be a great opportunity to get to better know those who hold our statewide future in their hands.” The 32-year-old freshman lawmaker also announced before even being sworn in as a House member representing the 81st District that she would challenge U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin for his seat in 2020. She supports the full range of progressive causes, according to her Senate campaign website. That includes Medicare-For-All, “actually affordable healthcare reform that doesn’t give away money to for-profit millionaires” and Wear Red for Ed, Families, “proper education funding that doesn’t result in mass striking for teachers to receive basic resources.” She also endorses “providing support for the LGBTQIA community as they have among the highest rates of being murdered by a member of the public.” In November, Stava-Murray defeated incumbent David Olsen (R-Downers Grove) in a close race. The 81st District includes parts of Bolingbrook, Darien, Downers Grove, Naperville and Woodridge.)

— ‘We’re not going to sit idly by’: Freshman Dems look to seize shutdown optics The new class of House lawmakers is finding creative ways to pressure the GOP into reopening the government. – MELANIE ZANONA
https://www.politico.com/story/2019/01/17/freshman-house-democrats-government-shutdown-1110462
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The freshmen’s moxie has caught some veteran lawmakers by surprise. “I was talking to a senator last night. He said he was here 16 years in the House and never stepped foot on the Senate side,” Underwood said. “We’ve been here for two weeks, and I’ve been over twice, searching all around for Sen. McConnell to say: ‘Sir, do your job.’” The campaign hasn’t been flawless. At one point during their journey to McConnell’s office, they realized they had run out of copies of their letter and asked for one back. McConnell’s office was nice enough to print them extra copies. The day before, the group of lawmakers hit a snag when some of their staffers forgot their ID badges and couldn’t get into the Senate after the news conference. But members involved in the strategy sessions said they are used to the more on-the-fly approach, and dismissed the notion that their effort was simply a publicity stunt.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: On the internet, conspiracy theories, propaganda and plain old inaccuracies can stump even the most thoughtful readers, spreading faster than you can say “fake news.” A small start-up, NewsGuard, says it may have a solution. The effort is led by a pair of veteran news executives — Steven Brill, an author and the founder of the magazine The American Lawyer, and Gordon Crovitz, a former publisher of The Wall Street Journal. On Wednesday the company announced that it had signed Microsoft as its first major client. NewsGuard has created the equivalent of nutrition labels for news organizations, rating more than 2,000 news and information sites with tags: red for unreliable, green for trustworthy. A team of roughly 50 journalists and analysts is making the evaluations. NewsGuard has given its stamp of approval to established publications like The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, as well as later entrants like BuzzFeed and Newsmax. FoxNews.com, The Hill, The Daily Beast and HuffPost have also gotten green lights. Sites to watch out for, according to NewsGuard, include Infowars and Breitbart on the right, and Daily Kos on the left. Media Matters, a left-leaning advocacy organization with a prolific media-watchdog blog, has received a green rating, but scores negatively on four of the nine criteria used by NewsGuard. The start-up hopes to become a regular part of the reading experience on the web. Its premise is that it is more efficient to rate news organizations than the endless stream of articles rolled out each hour. The service, free to readers, offers a browser extension that shows a news operation’s rating when a reader lands on its site. The NewsGuard tag also appears in search results next to article links for those who have the extension.)

— The Unfortunate Truth of College Graduates – Kendrick A. Rojas (DIERSEN: My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have always hinted/implied/argued/shouted a) that instead of me, the Post Office should have hired a non-White in 1966, b) that the Post Office should gotten rid of me much sooner than it did so that a non-White could have my job, c) that instead of me, IRS should have hired a non-White in 1971, d) that instead of me, IRS should have promoted non-Whites in 1972, 1973, and 1974, e) that instead of me, GAO should have hired a non-White in 1980, f) that instead of me, GAO should have promoted a non-White in 1986, and g) that GAO should have gotten rid of me much sooner than it did so that a non-White could have my job and my preferred corner office.)

The Unfortunate Truth of College Graduates

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Many college attendees struggle to find jobs which are both fitting for their careers and also have a respective income. Money magazine took the findings of labor economist Stephen Rose, who uncovered discoveries in his new analysis regarding the overqualification that has burdened college graduates entering the workforce. Money writer Kaitlin Mulhere deduced from Rose’s findings that “…no matter how the economy is faring, the overqualification rate is disproportionately high for workers who are just out of college and in their early 20s”. This means that many employers have handed down less-than-exemplary jobs, making it so that college graduates must crawl their way to the top regardless of their degree. Is this the kind of treatment that is deserved by hardworking students, spending countless hours educating themselves through the means of their own will? It should also be noted that the percentage of overqualification rates for Hispanics and African Americans increased by “…7 and 10 percentage points, respectively, than the rate for white college-educated workers”. This not only highlights the inconsideration of the educated workforce but also reveals the effects of racism that still segregate several demographics from gaining equal pay. Not only are college graduates being short-cut of their pay, but if you are part of a non-white racial group, then the likelihood that your efforts will be overlooked increase.)

NEWS GUARD
— Criteria for and Explanation of Ratings (DIERSEN: Needless-to-say, www.gopillinois.com should get a green rating.)
https://www.newsguardtech.com/ratings/criteria-for-and-explanation-of-ratings/
(FROM THE POSTING: THE 9 FACTORS Here are the 9 criteria that NewsGuard uses in determining if a provider is rated red. A site that fails to adhere to a preponderance of these criteria, as described in the weighted criteria definitions below, are rated red. No site must adhere to all of the criteria to be rated green. In every case the NewsGuard Nutrition Labels that are provided for each site (by clicking on the rating) spell out the site’s adherence to each of the 9 criteria that yielded that source’s particular rating. The 9 criteria below are listed in order of their importance in determining a red rating. For example, failure to adhere to the first criteria—publishing false content—will be more influential in determining a red rating than failure to reveal information about content creators.

Regularly corrects or clarifies errors: The site makes clear how to contact those in charge and has effective practices for publishing clarifications and corrections. (12.5 Points)

Handles the difference between news and opinion responsibly: Content providers who convey the impression that they report news or a mix of news and opinion distinguish opinion from news reporting, and when reporting news, they do not regularly or egregiously misstate, distort, or cherry pick facts, or egregiously cherry pick stories, to advance opinions. Content providers whose clearly expressed purpose is to advance a particular point of view do not regularly and egregiously misstate or distort facts to make their case. (12.5 Points)

Avoids deceptive headlines: The site generally does not publish headlines that include false information, significantly sensationalize, or otherwise do not reflect what is actually in the story. (10 Points)
