— Rauner concerned about turnout (DIERSEN: How hard does your Republican Precinct Committeeman/Captain work to maximize Republican turnout in your precinct? Since 2000, Democrat plants, Libertarian plants, Green plants, and RINOs in the Milton Township Republican Central Committee (MTRCC), DuPage County Republican Central Committee, and Illinois Republican Party have hinted/implied/argued/shouted that if they or if someone who they manipulate/dominate were the Republican Precinct Committeeman for DuPage County Milton Township Precinct 9 in Wheaton, the Republican turnout in that precinct would always have been much higher. They stress that while I have been a MTRCC member since 1999, they have never asked me to a) serve on any MTRCC committee, b) serve as a chairman of any MTRCC committee, or c) serve as a MTRCC officer. They stress that their candidate destroyed me when I ran for MTRCC Treasurer in 2004. They stress that they rudely ended my MTRCC webmaster service in 2004 and 2010. They blame me for all defeats that Republican candidates have suffered in Wheaton, in Milton Township, in DuPage County, and in Illinois since 2000.)

— Ben Carson’s HUD: Political loyalty required, no experience necessary – Tracy Jan (DIERSEN: GAO audits IRS. The Democrats who ran GAO 1980-1997 wasted my knowledge of IRS’s Collection Division. I worked for IRS’s Collection Division for almost 9 years, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $81,070-$91,880, before I transferred to GAO in 1980. While my Democrat GAO superiors assigned me to audits of IRS’s Criminal Investigation Division 1986-1988, they refused to assign me to audits of IRS’s Collection Division. They would have assigned me to audits of IRS’s Collection Division if I had been a Democrat, minority, female, and/or veteran.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded promotions and pay increases to five political operatives with no housing policy experience within their first months on the job, demonstrating what government watchdogs and career staff describe as a premium put on loyalty over expertise. The raises, documented in a Washington Post analysis of HUD political hires, resulted in annual salaries between $98,000 and $155,000 for the five appointees, all of whom had worked on Donald Trump’s or Ben Carson’s presidential campaigns. Three of them did not list bachelor’s degrees on their résumés. The political hires were among at least 24 people without evident housing policy experience who were appointed to the best-paying political positions at HUD, an agency charged with serving the poorest Americans. They account for a third of the 70 HUD appointees at the upper ranks of the federal government, with salaries above $94,000, according to the Post review of agency records. The limited experience at the upper reaches of the agency — HUD Secretary Carson, a retired neurosurgeon, has no prior housing, executive or government background — injected confusion into the rollout of policy initiatives and brought delays to even routine functions, according to interviews with 16 current and former career staff members. “This administration is different, because the people coming in really don’t know housing at all,” said Ron Ashford, who retired as director of HUD’s public-housing supportive-service programs in January after 22 years at the agency. “As a result, they’re pursuing initiatives that aren’t grounded in reality.”)

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/12/opinion/how-hyphenated-americans-won-world-war-i.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Without American intervention, the war would have probably ended in a German victory, or sputtered to a stalemate, leaving the Germans in possession of much of France, Belgium and Russia. The victory, though, came at significant cost: In the Meuse-Argonne offensive, as the operation came to be known, the Americans alone suffered some 122,000 casualties, including 29,000 dead. That more than a million Americans were fighting in a European war was surprising enough. But even more surprising was the men themselves: Pershing’s soldiers, known as the American Expeditionary Force, were in some units as likely to be foreign- as American-born. Thanks to a wave of immigration, the United States had changed significantly at the turn of the 20th century, going from a nation whose white population was 60 percent British and 35 percent German at the start of the Civil War into a turbulent “melting pot” in time for the Great War: 11 percent British, 20 percent German, 30 percent Italian and Hispanic and 34 percent Slavic.)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/success/savingsgame/tca-more-retirees-filing-for-bankruptcy-20180831-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A new study from the Consumer Bankruptcy Project indicates that the rate of bankruptcy among Americans ages 65 and older has tripled since 1991. More people ages 55 to 65 also are filing for bankruptcy. I am not surprised. People are going into retirement with more debt, including much higher mortgage debt. For example, in 1995, only 22 percent of 65 year-olds had mortgage debt; now 38 percent do. The average mortgage debt in 1995 was $27,300; now it is $73,000. Those are scary numbers. The proportion of retirees who have defined-benefit pension plans has decreased substantially. According to the Pension Research Center, a mere 23 percent of U.S. workers have such a pension plan. Today’s retirees are more dependent on defined-contribution plans, such as 401(k)s. With a defined contribution plan, the retiree must manage the portfolio himself or herself or pay a financial planner to do so. Most retirees don’t have the financial expertise to manage their own portfolio. Our educational system is inadequate when it comes to teaching us how to effectively manage a portfolio. Another important factor is age of retirement. Many employees would like to work longer before retiring, but most corporations offer early retirement incentives so they can hire younger workers at lower salaries. When an early retiree looks for other work, he/she faces age discrimination, with practically no recourse, despite anti-discrimination laws. Most people who need to retire early are forced to accept Social Security at age 62, and their benefit is significantly reduced. Although it would be beneficial to wait until age 70, most retirees simply can’t afford to. Another factor is health-care costs. These costs increase at much higher rates than other costs. Many corporations have reduced the health-care benefits for retirees. For seniors, the costs of Medicare, supplemental health care and prescription drugs keep increasing at high rates. Congressional representatives talks a lot about controlling prescription drug costs, but they have been unsuccessful in doing so. Those who use Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage find that as drug costs keep increasing, they are in the bubble much earlier in the year, resulting in much greater costs. The drug companies have substantial lobbies in the U.S., which has resulted in higher drug prices for U.S. citizens than for those overseas. Dental costs increase also for seniors more than for the general population, and Medicare doesn’t cover these costs. Many companies have either no dental coverage or inadequate coverage for retirees. Another factor is longer expected life. Although it is great news that we are living longer, there are other implications. The longer we live, a larger the nest egg that is needed going into retirement to ensure that our money will last for as long as we live. It’s hard to build a larger asset base going into retirement if corporations want their workers to retire early. Moreover, as expected life expectancy increases, insurance companies reduce monthly payments for lifetime annuities. Another factor is required support for other family members. Because tuition costs have increased dramatically, most college graduates are graduating with high debt. As retirees assist their children with this debt, it puts more of a burden on their financial well-being. So, it is not surprising that older people are increasingly filing for bankruptcy.)

— DIERSEN HEADLINE: Government is nasty. Politics is nasty. Democrats bring up that Peter Lee, the GOP candidate for District 17 of the state House of Representatives, was sanctioned in 2003 by the state Supreme Court for failing to use client funds appropriately. What would your critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes bring up if you ran for an office? My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes in the Milton Township Republican Central Committee (MTRCC), DuPage County Republican Central Committee, Illinois Republican Party, TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois, Wheaton Chamber of Commerce (WCC), Illinois Center Right Coalition (ICRC), American Association of Political Consultants (AAPC) Midwest Chapter (MC), GAO, IRS, and Post Office would bring up a) that my Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, gave me unfair performance expectations and appraisals, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, got rid of my mentor in 1987, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take an $19,203 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980; b) that my Democrat IRS superiors not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, got rid of my mentor in 1975, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974; c) that my Democrat Post Office superiors forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests in 1969 and 1968; and d) that I am no longer a TAPROOT chairman, WCC Government Affairs Committee member, MTRCC webmaster, ICRC Steering Committee member, AAPC MC board member, GAO employee, IRS employee, or Post Office employee.)

A major reason why I agreed to suffer a $19,203 (26%) pay cut in today’s dollars in 1980 to transfer from IRS to GAO was that GAO claimed that it was “free of political influence.” I soon learned that was completely false. GAO hired me in 1980 because it could not find a qualified Democrat, minority, female, younger person, or veteran who would take the job. Were it not for federal Civil Service protections, GAO would NOT have hired me in 1980, would NOT have let me work there for almost 18 years, and would NOT have promoted me in 1986. — A Celebration of Spanish Conquest Ends in New Mexico. Not Everyone Is Pleased. – Simon Romero
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/08/us/new-mexico-la-entrada.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: For as long as nearly anyone here can remember, Hispanic residents have donned the garb of conquistadors and European nobility once a year to celebrate the 1692 reconquest of New Mexico from Native Americans who submitted to the Spanish Empire after a grisly revolt. But after escalating protests by Native Americans who saw the reenactment as a racist attempt to gloss over atrocities carried out by Spanish colonizers, the annual tradition known as the Entrada officially came to an end on Friday, replaced by a multidenominational prayer gathering to begin the annual Fiesta de Santa Fe. The move, aimed at forging reconciliation in the 411-year-old city, was an attempt to avoid the kind of turmoil that authorities elsewhere in the country are grappling with over Confederate monuments and other symbols of historic brutality, including statues honoring European conquerors. The end of the Entrada is rekindling debate over how to portray New Mexico’s complex history, marked by centuries of enslavement of Native Americans, military conquest by Spain and the United States and attempts to depict the state as a place where Hispanics, Native Americans and Anglos, or non-Hispanic whites, peacefully coexist.)

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2018/09/08/barack-obama-takes-anti-trump-message-orange-county-california/1239129002/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Democrats are counting on a strong showing in California in November’s elections in the battle to take control of Congress. They are targeting several congressional districts. While Democrats have gained, Republicans overall still have a registration edge in the county — 563,992 to 516,121 at the start of the year, according to the California Secretary of State’s office. Demographics have changed with an influx of Latinos, Asians and other immigrants. The county’s economy has evolved away from manufacturing and to more services and high-tech jobs that attract white-collar workers who are inclined to vote Democratic. Like much of the country, unemployment is low in Orange County and the economy is strong, meaning turnout could be more dependent on anger about Trump and his policies rather than dissatisfaction with the state of the nation.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— FRONT PAGE: Workers at Lincoln Park seniors home stole $600,000 from 97-year-old resident with dementia, public guardian’s suit alleges – Elyssa Cherney and Christy Gutowski (DIERSEN: Since 2009, I have had power of attorney for property and for health for my outstanding aunt who will soon be 88 years old and has a debilitating diagnosis of dementia. She never attended college, she never married, she worked as a low-paid keypunch operator, she lived frugally, and she saved about $600,000 for her retirement. Since 2010, she has lived in an assisted living facility that is currently charging her $239 a day or $87,235 a year. She still has about $470,000 of the about $600,000 that she saved. I can account for all of her income and for all of her expenses since 2009. Of course, I have not charged her anything for the many hours that I have spent managing her financial and health matters. She was one of those who taught me how to drive a car.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: With no living relatives and a debilitating diagnosis of dementia, Grace Watanabe had nowhere else to turn. The 97-year-old needed help with her finances and looked for guidance at Symphony Residences of Lincoln Park, a senior facility where she had been staying since 2010. Watanabe, who was forced to live at a Japanese internment camp during World War II, had built up a life savings of $600,000 over a lengthy career as a federal government employee. But instead of helping Watanabe, a group of workers at the home are accused of draining her assets in a yearlong scheme that included cashing checks, making ATM withdrawals and transferring money online without her consent, according to a lawsuit filed Thursday by acting Cook County Public Guardian Charles Golbert. Virtually all of her life savings are gone, the lawsuit said. “I’ve never seen this level of corruption from the very highest levels to the very lowest levels,” Golbert said. “These Symphony employees were paid to assist the residents with the care they needed. Instead, they took advantage of Ms. Watanabe’s vulnerabilities to access her money.”)

— Lawsuit alleges worker not paid prevailing wage on city job – Crystal Thomas (DIERSEN: What is your prevailing wage, that is, how much money should you be paid per hour based on your education, your work experience, your professional certifications, your professional licenses, etc.? In today’s dollars, in 1997, when I was 49 years old, GAO paid me $125,325/year or $60.25/hour. I had almost 18 years of experience working for GAO and almost 9 years of experience working for IRS. I had earned a) a job-related bachelor’s degree when I was 21 in 1970 and job-related master’s degrees when I was 27, 31, and 48, b) job-related professional certifications when I was 30 (CPA), 32 (Certified Internal Auditor), 41 (Certified Fraud Examiner), 45 (Certified Government Financial Manager), 47 (Certified Financial Services Auditor), and 48 (Forensic Accountant), and c) a job-related professional license (licensed CPA) when I was 32.)

POLITICO ILLINOIS
— Trumpism is taking a toll on Republican races in Illinois, though GOP leaders are optimistic the president’s behavior won’t hurt candidates too much. “His behavior hurts Republicans. You can’t engage in that kind of conduct, those kinds of tweets, and come to a conclusion that it doesn’t hurt Republicans,” said Pat Brady, the former state GOP chair. “But people have been able to differentiate between Trump’s persona and his policies” of tax cuts and deregulation. “People make the distinction.” Recent polls may be showing otherwise. Last night, the New York Times conducted a so-called live poll in suburban Chicago’s 6th Congressional District. Incumbent Rep. Peter Roskam (R) took 45 percent to Sean Casten (D)’s 44 percent—with 11 percent undecided. Respondents also were asked whether they approve or disapprove of Trump’s job performance—57 percent disapproved, compared to 36 percent who approved. That’s quite a drag on Roskam. It’s one of the reasons that, earlier this week, POLITICO’s inaugural congressional race ratings categorized Roskam v. Casten as “lean Republican,” a designation suggesting the incumbent only has a narrow edge. Three other Republican-controlled Illinois House races showed up on the list as “lean Republican”: Rep. Mike Bost (R) v. Brendan Kelly (D) in the 12th District; Rep. Rodney Davis (R) v. Betsy Dirksen Londrigan (D) in the 13th District; and Rep. Randy Hultgren (R) v. Lauren Underwood (D) in the 14th District. – Shia Kapos

— ILLINOIS PUBLIC SCHOOL PRINCIPAL TURNS $358,000 INTO $7.1 MILLION (DIERSEN: My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes could argue that so far, I have turned the $70,932 that I paid into the Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) (in 1966-1969 and 1971-1997 dollars) into $1,076,178 in today’s dollars ($4,322 X 249 months). However, they should acknowledge that if I was still working for GAO at the GS-13 Step 10 level, I would have paid $182,039 more into the CSRS in today’s dollars and the CSRS would have paid me nothing.)

FED SMITH
— Would You Recommend the Government as an Employer? – Jeff Neal (DIERSEN: Overwhelmingly, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes demonize, denigrate, and condemn past, present, and future federal employees. Many millions have not and will not seek a job with the federal government a) because the pay and benefits are terrible compared to big private sector employers, b) because the advancement opportunities are terrible compared to big private sector employers, c) because they lack required education, work experience, professional certifications, and/or professional licenses, d) because they cannot pass an employment examination, e) because they cannot pass a background investigation, f) because they cannot pass a physical examination, g) because they cannot take the demonization, denigration, and condemnation that comes with being a federal employee or federal retiree, and/or h) because they are Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran and they know that the federal government discriminates against the aforesaid. Non-veteran White males who are seeking a job with the federal government should be advised that with only rare exceptions, a) the longer that you are a federal employee, the less likely that private sector employers will hire you, b) your career will be wasted and you will be gotten rid of if you do not make GS-13 (currently $96,403) by age 25, GS-14 (currently $113,920) by age 30, GS-15 (currently $134,000) by age 35, and Senior Executive Service (currently $164,200) by age 40, c) you will be expected to help your superiors and supervisors get rid of their employees who are Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran, and d) virtually everyone despises if not hates federal employees, former federal employees, and federal retirees.)
https://www.fedsmith.com/2018/09/06/recommend-government-employer/

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Why the Government is Not a Good Employer Bureaucracy There are rules for the rules. Bureaucratic hurdles can be maddening to folks who are trying to get work done. While there may be good reasons for some of the red tape, much of it is the variety that no one in the private sector would impose. Inflexible Pay About three quarters of the workforce is covered by the General Schedule or a GS-derived pay plan. Once an employee is hired, pay raises follow rigid rules that do not take into account how well or poorly the employee performs. Entry level pay for high demand jobs may not be competitive, and bonuses for most workers are insignificant. There are no stock options or other pay incentives, and an employee who saves millions of dollars may get a bonus that is trivial. Slow Promotions Great employees whose performance is exceptional can typically be promoted no more than once per year. That unnecessary restriction can drive great employees away, or cause great candidates to decline a federal job. Politics The biggest problem may be our toxic political system. Federal workers have been the targets of opportunistic politicians for years. A great example is those on the right and left calling federal law enforcement officers “jackbooted thugs” at different times in the past 20 years and more recent complaints about Transportation Security Officers calling them “government gropers.” Internal Revenue Service employees are criticized for doing their jobs, and every ten years Census Bureau enumerators are physically attacked while they are carry out a constitutional duty. Then there are the complaints about government workers calling them lazy, incompetent or unable to find “real jobs.”)

AMERICAN ENTERPRISE INSTITUTE
— Congress must grow to check the administrative state – James C. Capretta (DIERSEN: All during the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO 1980-1997, the agency shrank in either absolute or relative terms. The agency is just a shell of what it once was.)
http://www.aei.org/publication/congress-must-grow-to-check-the-administrative-state/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Congress could begin to reassert itself by building stronger institutional support for the development of specific legislative responses to emerging issues and problems. The existing congressional support agencies — the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), the Government Accountability Office (GAO), the Congressional Research Service (CRS), and the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (Medpac) — have real strengths and expertise. They provide regular, highly valuable reports to Congress, and, in the cases of GAO and Medpac, make relevant recommendations for legislation to Congress. But because these agencies are designed to provide nonpartisan support to Congress, neither party relies on them heavily to develop new policy initiatives that could serve as the basis for legislation. When Republicans and Democrats write bills to address emerging issues, they want ideas that are technically sound, of course, but they also want to champion changes that conform to their philosophical approaches to governing. Congress shouldn’t breach the political independence of the traditional support agencies; they provide objective analysis and should be above the partisan fray. Instead, Congress should look to expand support for their legislative efforts by building new pockets of institutional support that combine technical expertise in key issue areas with a policy development mission.)

There was what amounted to an attempted hijack of the funeral of an authentic war hero and prominent senator, to convert it into an expression of anger and of contempt for the absent president. This campaign was torqued up all week by the Trump-hating media, who then gave maximum play to the gratuitous shots of Obama and Meghan McCain.)

http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-older-workers-20180903-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: With a master’s degree in computer science and 30 years of experience working for technology companies, Tom Middleton had little doubt he would soon find new employment after losing his job a decade ago as a software engineering manager at Kyocera in San Diego. How wrong he was. After two years of submitting more than 300 applications for tech jobs and scoring only an occasional face-to-face interview, the then-59-year-old Middleton became convinced his age was a hindrance. He would hear feedback like “You’re overqualified” and “We can’t pay you what you’re used to.” As money grew tighter, house payments were missed and 401(k) savings were exhausted, he took minimum-wage jobs at Target and Walmart and tried his hand at income tax preparation. On a whim, he applied for a job as a bus driver — and was hired, now earning less than half his former six-figure salary. “I had some days where I just wanted to crawl in a hole,” Middleton, now 66, said of his job search. “I thought I’d be a bargain to someone, but they didn’t see it that way.” A growing share of baby boomers is opting to work well into what traditionally would be their retirement years, but the challenges of remaining employed or reentering the workforce at an older age, even in today’s tight labor market, haven’t necessarily eased. And even as Labor Department data show more people 55 and older are employed than ever before and have a lower jobless rate — 3.1%, compared with 3.9% for all workers — they remain out of work longer than their younger peers when they lose a job. On average, they’re jobless for about 37 weeks, compared with 25 weeks for workers ages 35 to 44, according to 2017 data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Their hourly pay also starts to decline as they enter their 60s, regardless of how much education they have.)

https://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2018/09/mexican_flag_flies_proudly_over_town_where_illegal_alien_killed_mollie_tibbetts.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: When an invading army captures a town, they usually run up the flag, to show who’s in charge. But in America, we don’t need an occupying army. We do it to ourselves. Witness the town of Brooklyn, Iowa, where Mollie Tibbetts was murdered by an illegal alien, which proudly flies the flag of Mexico. According to the liberal media, Brooklyn was one big happy multicultural town, until conservatives ruined it by complaining about the illegal alien who murdered Mollie. Really. …police found Tibbetts’s body discarded in a cornfield. They charged Cristhian Bahena Rivera, a local farmhand, with her murder. And they announced that Rivera, who had no prior criminal history, was an undocumented Mexican immigrant. For most people in Brooklyn, though, Rivera’s legal status is a distraction. This time should be about Mollie, they say, not the man accused of killing her. This is the liberal line. On the statistically rare occasions when a white person kills a black, the liberal media can talk about nothing else other than the race of the accused. But when an illegal alien does the killing, they don’t want to talk about perpetrators. They treat it like the weather. It’s just something that happens.)

WASHINGTON TIMES
— The Democratic game plan – Robert Knight
https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2018/sep/2/as-democrats-move-left-they-must-replace-the-ameri/
(
FROM THE ARTICLE: The “progressives”’ game plan to re-acquire power in Washington and make it permanent has been shockingly obvious for some time: Import millions of illegal immigrants, hook them on government aid and turn them into voters — legally or illegally. Two Democrats running for Congress in Texas have come out for decriminalizing illegal immigration, along with Beto O’Rourke, who is running for Ted Cruz’s U.S. Senate seat. Virtually all Democratic office holders oppose voter ID laws. In March, Nation magazine writer Sean McElwee called for abolishing the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE), a demand repeated by “progressives” around the country. The Washington Post has editorialized against adding a question about citizenship to the U.S. Census, saying it looks “suspiciously like an underhanded way to depress Democratic representation in Washington.” Districts with high numbers of illegal aliens who cannot legally vote have an advantage because the Census determines congressional seats and presidential electors based on population. So, the more illegals, the merrier for Democrats. The Dems must replace the American electorate because their plunge into “free” government health care, “free” college tuition, open borders, confiscatory taxes, anti-police rhetoric, activist judges and bizarre sexual politics is alienating more and more “everyday” Americans. The left needs new voting blocs. It’s the only way they’ll stay competitive, especially when the Trump administration has the economy roaring like a Ferrari. Millions of evangelical Christians and moderate-to-conservative Catholics voted for Mr. Trump because they saw him as their best bet against a hostile Deep State and its media allies. Portions of the IRS, the FBI and other federal agencies had been criminally politicized under President Obama, and Hillary Clinton would have finished the job. With state power unchecked since the Reagan years, Uncle Sam has morphed into Nurse Ratched, presiding over a giant sanitarium. That’s the issue ignored by the media: Democrats are at war with normalcy of any kind and want to impose their cracked view of reality on the rest of us.)

https://www.dailyherald.com/business/20180901/so-how-does-the-mysterious-google-search-engine-really-work
(FROM THE ARTICLE: This is where the more subjective parts of Google’s search engine come in. Over 100 factors – from where the user is located to how recently a given webpage was updated – contribute to how highly a certain result may appear. In addition, the company’s famous PageRank algorithm, developed by co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, plays a role in determining the authoritativeness of a given source. Google executives are hesitant to discuss the specifics of their software, for fear of encouraging those who may seek to game the algorithm. And a core aspect of Trump’s critique is that Google is mistaken in the way that it assigns authority in the first place. But, said Pandu Nayak, the head of Google’s search ranking team, Google tests its own search results with regular humans to ensure that the search engine does what it is meant to do: Provide relevant and authoritative results. “We’ve developed a detailed series of guidelines about what it means to be authoritative,” said Nayak in an interview. “It’s a 160-page document, it’s been publicly available on the Web for several years now, and it’s our representation about what it means to give relevant and authoritative results. Raters must study it and pass a test” before they can participate in the evaluation process. Google News’ secret sauce Some of Trump’s criticism appears to revolve around which stories appear in Google News. Recent changes to Google News have turned it into a much more personalized product. The company now apples artificial intelligence and accounts more for your expressed preferences. This approach has given rise to questions about what determines News results and just how much its engineers truly understand about the decisions their AI is making. A consistent theme in current machine learning research is that the algorithms are typically black boxes – often, the only way to determine why an algorithm made a decision is to try to reverse-engineer the logic from the results. Influencing the sauce? Still, it appears, companies and individuals can influence Google search results. Reverse-engineering Google has practically become something of a cottage industry, particularly in media. Publishers are constantly trying to find ways to compete for visibility on Google News and on Google Search. For example, Google’s tendency to favor recency, or “freshness,” incentivizes companies such as The Washington Post to create their webpages with metadata keywords that the search engine can easily read. But not even the best experts can know for sure whether their techniques are working. “The file that has the smart meta-title on it is the file that people land on for the latest updates,” said Megan Chan, director of digital operations at The Post. “A lot of it is trial and error.” While The Post has a relationship with Google on special initiatives such as The Trust Project, an effort to promote integrity in journalism, Google does not use those relationships to provide insights into how its algorithms work, Chan said.)

BUFFALO NEWS
— Take a measure of your eyesight this month – Judith Whitehead (DIERSEN: How is your eyesight? My eyesight has never been correctable to 20/20 and I have always had partial red/green color blindness. I can no longer put off cataract surgery.)
https://buffalonews.com/2018/09/01/take-a-measure-of-your-eyesight-this-month/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: As we age, loss of vision becomes more prevalent, depending on family history, health and certain eye diseases. If conditions such as Macular Degeneration, diabetes and glaucoma run in your family, you need to make sure you have regular eye exams. Eye diseases often have no early symptoms but can be detected during a dilated eye evaluation. There are more than 40 million Americans over the age of 65 and this number is growing rapidly. By the 2050, there will be more than 88 million people in this age group. As our life expectancy increases, so do our eye conditions. The number of people living with poor vision is projected to triple. Fortunately in our country, conditions such as cataracts don’t have to cause blindness as they do in other countries. We are lucky enough to have accessible health care in most areas of America. We need to make sure we take care of our aging population. Keep an eye on aging relatives and friends – loss of vision is gradual and easily goes undetected. Early detection and treatment is always the key to saving your sight.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: After my cataract surgery, I remember saying that I was officially a geezer. Well, that wasn’t true. NOW I am officially a geezer. My Medicare card arrived yesterday in the mail. You know, that red, white and blue card that all of us geezers carry around in our wallets. I opened the envelope from the Department of Health and Human Services and saw the cheery greeting on the cover letter: “Welcome to Medicare!” Seeing the card felt really weird, I suppose because I have never taken my age seriously. I remember being 30 all those years ago and thinking, “I wonder when I will feel as if I am an adult?” I wondered the same thing when I turned 35. Not long after that, though, adulthood came crashing down because Emily was born, and all of a sudden, I realized that I was responsible for another human being. That made me sit up and take notice. But truly, I have never paid attention to the fact that age was creeping up because I have never felt my age. My BFF Susan and I were talking a few months ago – OK, it was probably a couple of years ago, but who can remember, because they’re all running together at this point – about how we both felt as if we were much younger than our mothers when they were our age (we share the same age), whatever it was at the time.)
