May 18 Morning Edition

GOPUSA ILLINOIS
— Are you a Republican Precinct Committeeman/Captain in Illinois? Tomorrow, all 102 Illinois Republican Party (IRP) county party chairman and all 18 IRP State Central Committee (SCC) members are scheduled to meet in Springfield. Have you received notification of the time and location of the Illinois Republican County Chairman’s Association (IRCCA) meeting and/or IRP SCC meeting? Have you been invited to attend the meetings? Have you been asked to provide input for the agendas for the meetings, and if so, what input did you provide? Have you received a copy of the agendas for the meetings? Are you going to attend the meetings? Have you been provided with all the details of the deal struck between Bruce Rauner and Mark Shaw to placate the “conservative insurgents” in the IRP, that is, the 342,906 who voted for Ives? Do you approve or disapprove of that deal? Why? Have you asked your IRP county chairman and your IRP SCC member to vote for or against the deal? Will your IRP county party chairman email you a report of what happened at the May 19 IRCCA meeting? Will your IRP SCC member email you a report of what happened at the May 19 IRP SCC meeting?

What do you want Mark Shaw to do in his roles as the Co-Chairman of the IRP and the President of the IRCCA to organize Illinois conservatives and to “lead conservative and grassroots outreach for the” IRP? Should he:

  1. Encourage Rauner to sign a pledge to defend and advance all the planks in the IRP platform, including its traditional family, right to life, immigration, and Second Amendment planks?
  2. Identify who the conservative leaders are in each county in Illinois, meet with them on a one on one basis, meet with them at regional meetings, and/or meet with them at statewide meetings?
  3. Identify who the conservative leaders are in Illinois on a platform plank basis, including those who have taken the lead on the traditional family, right to life, immigration, and Second Amendment planks and meet with them on a one on one basis, meet with them at regional meetings, and/or meet with them at statewide meetings?
  4. Encourage Dave Diersen to form the “Republican Assembly of DuPage County” to reach out to and organize the conservatives in DuPage County?
  5. Encourage all Illinois conservatives and Republicans to read GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails?
  6. Encourage all Illinois conservative and Republican leaders to keep diersen@aol.com on their press advisory and press release lists? – Dave Diersen

ILLINOIS REVIEW
— RAUNER – YAY!
http://illinoisreview.typepad.com/illinoisreview/2018/05/rauner-yay.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Yay! Yay, teachers! Yay, [Democrat Illinois Supreme Court Justice] Ann Burke! Yay, Israel! Yay, Eunice Shriver! Yay, Kennedys! Yay, [Loyola] Ramblers! CapitolFax’s Rich Miller pulled together Governor Rauner uncomfortably “yaying” for an array of interesting folks, groups and other miscellaneous cheering reasons. Missing from the collection, though, is Governor Rauner’s “Yay, Planned Parenthood! Yay, Sanctuary state! Yay, Rauner Party leadership that stopped the IL GOP Platform-hugging conservative wing’s insurgent takeover!”)
— THORNER/O’NEIL: TIME TO HOLD CHURCH LEADERS RESPONSIBLE FOR PARISHIONERS’ POLITICS (DIERSEN: I should write a book about those who are a member of a church, attend church services, and/or give money to a church who claim to be Republican, but a) who promote dependency on government and on charity, b) who promote booze, gambling, pot, and/or other vices, c) who promote LGBTQ activity, d) who promote abortion, e) who promote illegal immigration, and/or f) who promote other planks in the Democrat, Libertarian, and/or Green platforms.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— DIERSEN HEADLINE: Democrats, Libertarians, Greens, and RINOs a) demonize, denigrate, and condemn those who voted for Ives as being “conservative insurgents;” b) say that “Rauner is happy GOP is ‘working together’ after leadership squabble;” c) say that Rauner said “Well, I love seeing everybody coming together and working together and forming partnerships and alliances. That’s all good;” d) say that Rauner sees the recent Illinois Republican Party (IRP) leadership deal as giving Ives voters a “larger voice” in the IRP; and d) say that Rauner sees the deal as “a sign of unity for his re-election efforts.” Are you a “conservative insurgent,” that is, were you one of the 342,906 who voted for Ives? I did. Do you believe the deal will give you a greater voice in the IRP? How did you learn of the deal? If you are a Republican Precinct Committeeman/Captain, did you first learn of the deal a) from the IRP, b) from your representative on the IRP State Central Committee, c) from the officers of your IRP county party organization, d) from the officers of your IRP township/ward party organization, e) from the Democrat news media, or f) from Dave Diersen and his GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails?)

ABC7
— Emanuel allies raise integrity concerns about Lightfoot – Craig Wall (DIERSEN: How many hats do you wear? Since 2000, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have raised “integrity concerns” about me. To discredit/harm/slander me, they hint/imply/argue/shout that I can claim to be only one of the following: political reporter/journalist, political consultant, or Republican Precinct Committeeman. I should write a book about my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes. Better yet, I should sue them.)

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
— CPS senior joins ranks of students with over $1 million in college scholarships – Maudlyne Ihejirika (DIERSEN: When you were in high school, did you apply for scholarships? I did not. When you were in high school, were you considered to be “college material?” While I attended Crete-Monee High School 1962-1966, I took college preparatory courses notwithstanding the fact that many, if not most, if not virtually everyone at the time viewed me as NOT being “college material.” Neither of my parents had attended college. My father was the first of his ancestors to earn a high school diploma. My mother never attended high school. I spent my junior and senior years and the summer in between washing dishes for the minimum wage in the basement of the S.S. Kresges in Chicago Heights. I just barely made into the upper 20% of my class, my ACT score was only 24, I was draft bait, my eyesight could not be corrected to 20/20, I had partial red/green color blindness, and I had Osgood-Schlatter disease (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osgood%E2%80%93Schlatter_disease).)

DAILY HERALD
— Business Ledger honors 75 companies as “Best Places to Work in Illinois’ – Richard Klicki (DIERSEN: One could hint/imply/argue/shout that the federal government is a “best place to work” for those who are Democrat, minority, female, younger, and/or veteran because the federal government gets rid of its employees who are Republican, White, male, and/or non-veteran who do not make GS-13 (currently $96,403) by age 25, GS-14 (currently $113,920) by age 30, GS-15 (currently $134,000) by age 35, and Senior Executive Service (currently $164,200) by age 40.)

— The Southern Illinoisan newsroom votes to form union (DIERSEN: I was a union member for almost 12 years. Overwhelmingly, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes despise if not hate past, present, and future union members. Further, overwhelmingly, they despise if not hate wage earners. I was a wage earner 1964-1997. Further, overwhelmingly, they despise if not hate past, present, and future federal employees and retirees. CHICAGO ARGUS
— Political strategist Madigan vs. amateur-hour gov Rauner – Gregory Tejeda (DIERSEN: There are extremely few Republican political consultants in Illinois, and I am one of them. While Rauner does not seek or take my advice, he ever-increasingly seems to take advice from his wife and from political consultants who are Democrat or Democrat plant, Libertarian or Libertarian plant, Green or Green plant, or RINO. Ever-increasingly, he seems to be taking their advice to not only dump, but to destroy voters who support the traditional family, right to life, immigration, Second Amendment, and other planks in the Illinois Republican Party (IRP) platform. Ever-increasingly, he seems to be taking their advice to destroy the IRP. One could fault Trump and the IRP leaders for letting this happen.)

GOPUSA ILLINOIS
— Factors that discourage Illinois residents who are religious, conservative, and/or Republican from planning on attending the Illinois Republican Party (IRP) State Central Committee meeting in Springfield this Saturday, May 19:
– Those who want Tim Schneider reelected as IRP chairman have not asked you to attend,

– The meeting agenda might not include a public comment period,
– The meeting room might be filled to capacity before you get there,

— Rauner’s opponent, William J. Kelly gears up for fight for the Illinois GOP
http://www.williamjkelly.org/news/rauners-opponent-william-j-kelly-gears-up-for-fight-for-the-illinois-gop
(FROM THE ANNOUNCEMENT: WHAT: William J. Kelly, independent candidate for Illinois Governor, will have a press conference on Friday to discuss the future of the post-Rauner Illinois GOP. Kelly also plans to speak at the Illinois GOP State Central Committee meeting on Saturday morning and will be broadcasting live from the State Central Committee meeting. Kelly has released the following statement: “The last four years have been difficult ones for those of us who sounded the warning bell on Bruce Rauner and that bell has finally been heard at a terrible cost: Illinois is now a sanctuary state and expanded taxpayer-funded abortion on demand is the law of the land. The blame is not Governor Rauner’s alone; he had help. I blame Rauner’s payroll conservatives at Illinois Policy Institute, Illinois Opportunity Project, and Liberty Principles PAC. In 2013, when Rauner announced for Governor, his history as a liberal pro-abortion, pro-amnesty Democrat donor was already well-known. Ignoring this, a number of conservative leaders and donors heralded Rauner’s coming. Illinois Policy Institute’s John Tillman and Liberty Principles PAC’s Dan Proft were well-paid to induce conservative voters to support Rauner despite his left-wing history. A number of Illinois Tea Party leaders forced Rauner on us too, attacking anyone who opposed him. For the last four years I, too, have endured the public attacks of Rauner’s payroll conservatives. However, since Rauner’s betrayal on illegal immigration and abortion, many former Raunerites have apologized to me. We need to recruit new conservative and tea party leaders to take the place of those that let us down. I am running for Illinois Governor to reform, rebuild, and redeem the Illinois Republican Party now and for the future. Please join me.”

They had introduced my father and mother to each other and they sparked my interest in cars. The homes two and three doors north of my parent’s home are also Sears homes.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Here are some facts about Crete. The first settlers came to the area in 1836. The Will County town was incorporated in 1880 and the 2010 census listed its population as 8,227. In 2012, the Crete-Monee High School football team won a state championship. Crete also is home to more than 40 houses sold by Sears, making it the largest repository for these dwellings in the south suburbs, according to Phyllis Monks, president of the Crete Area Historical Society. Monks said residents were able to build “kit” homes because trains made frequent stops at the local depot, leaving all that was needed to build one in two boxcars.)

Since my wife and I got married in 1978, we have always lived in walking distance of a commuter train station in Wheaton. I bought a one bedroom condo in 1976 and a studio condo in 1974 in downtown Chicago so that I could walk to work and to night classes. I bought a new town home in 1972 when I worked in Harvey. I asked Firestone Stores to assign me to its Chicago Heights Store in 1970 when I was living with my mother and brother in Crete.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Moore wanted to move closer to work but said he could not afford the rent at apartments on the Northwest Side or nearby suburbs that would have made his commute more manageable. And even if he could, Moore said he often felt out of place in the predominantly white neighborhoods. “It’s almost like being an alien, you know,” Moore said. “It’s like, do I belong here?” Moore, who lives in North Lawndale, eventually found work as a community organizer in a job that reduced his travel time by more than half. Moore’s hunt for affordable housing, a shorter commute and a different neighborhood are among the elements highlighted in the Metropolitan Planning Council’s new report on the Chicago region’s segregation, which offers a buffet of initiatives that take aim at entrenched racism and inequities holding back the region.)

https://www.peoplesworld.org/article/how-free-is-the-free-press-in-trumps-america/

(FROM THE ARTICLE: There is an old saying, “He who pays the piper calls the tune,” meaning that someone who provides the money has the right to determine what it is spent on. In journalism these days it has taken on a sinister connotation for everything from censoring school newspapers to the firing and even murder of outspoken journalists. Here in the U.S. we like to reflect on the concept of a free press as written into the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. But President Donald Trump describes journalists who offer anything but fawning coverage of him and his administration as “enemies of the people.” Another president, Richard Nixon, also once declared, “The press is the enemy.” Carl Bernstein, one of the Washington Post reporters who exposed Nixon’s Watergate scandal in the 1970s, says Trump’s rhetoric is similar to Nixon’s in that he is “trying to divide the country, and make the conduct of the press the issue, instead of the conduct of the president.” The Trump administration is trying to get the public to buy the idea that when a newspaper or television network reports anything that is at all unflattering to the president that newspaper or network is automatically displaying its bias. “In Donald Trump’s America,” said the Los Angeles Times in an editorial, “the mere act of reporting news unflattering to the president is held up as evidence of bias. Journalists are slandered. Facts that contradict Trump’s version of reality are dismissed as ‘fake news.’ Reporters and their news organizations are ‘pathetic,’ ‘very dishonest,’ ‘failing,’ and even, in one memorable turn of phrase, ‘a pile of garbage.’” While Trump aims his fire at even objective reporting that shines light on negative features of his administration, not all newspapers, television networks and other media outlets are placed on his enemies list. Some, like Fox News, shower praise on the president almost round the clock and he rewards them with frequent exclusive interviews. It is impossible to avoid the conclusion that a big difference between the networks and outlooks he likes and the ones he opposes correlates to who owns those various networks and outlets. It goes without saying that the high costs of putting out the news favors billionaires to become owners of huge chunks of print and broadcasting media and it is not always easy to keep track of who owns what. Recent headlines provide an example of how it can get confusing: “Comcast prepares all-cash bid to gate-crash Disney-Fox deal,” or “Disney Could Give Up Sky to Get Fox Assets.” Another fact is that big money doesn’t just limit itself to controlling editorial policy. At times it goes after the ability of newspapers to even continue to exist. Clarity about the nature of what goes on in a world where big money influences journalism was the aim of a May 8 Democracy Now show with Amy Goodman and Juan González. They talked about how rank and file journalists are rising up against a Wall Street hedge fund that is chewing up and spitting out newsrooms across the country. Alden Global Capital, a hedge fund, owns Digital First media, the nation’s second largest newspaper chain.)

NATIONAL REVIEW
— Stormy Daniels’s Lawyer Threatens to Sue Reporters for Digging into His Background – JACK CROWE (DIERSEN: What would reporters who disapproved of you find if they dug into your background? If reporters who disapproved of me dug into my background, they would find that a) I am no longer the TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois chairman, Wheaton Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee member, Milton Township Republican Central Committee webmaster, Illinois Center Right Coalition Steering Committee member, or American Association of Political Consultants Midwest Chapter board member. They would find a) that my Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, gave me unfair performance expectations and appraisals, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, got rid of my mentor in 1987, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take an $19,203 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980; b) that my Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, got rid of my mentor in 1975, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974; and c) that my Democrat Post Office superiors forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests in 1969 and 1968. They would find that I have been a Republican Precinct Committeeman since 1999 and the GOPUSA Illinois Editor since 2000. They would find that I am a Trump supporter, Protestant (baptized, raised, and confirmed as a Missouri Synod Lutheran, conservative, patriotic, Republican, American, White, male, old (born in 1948), non-poor, gun owner, 100% German American, my ancestors have been in America since 1844, union member for almost 12 years, federal employee for almost 30 years, federal retiree for more than 20 years, childless, pet-less, American nameplate car owner, and even worse things. — Retirement stresses us out, especially those who have saved – Jill Schlesinger (DIERSEN: One could argue that if you are not on track to have a) at least $1 million saved for your retirement or b) at least $50,000/year in pension, Social Security, and other income, you are planning to “go on the dole.” According to this article, “a whopping 62 percent of workers have not actually calculated how much money they will need to have saved so that they can live comfortably in retirement.”)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/success/tca-retirement-stresses-us-out-especially-those-who-have-saved-20180510-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The 2018 Retirement Confidence Survey (“RCS,” a joint venture between the nonpartisan Employee Benefit Research Institute and research firm Greenwald & Associates) is out, and about two-thirds of Americans feel confident or at least somewhat confident in their ability to retire comfortably. Yet nearly the same share say that preparing for retirement makes them feel stressed. You may think that these feelings arise because so many have saved very little. Among respondents who are still working, 45 percent report that the total value of their household’s savings and investments, excluding the value of their primary home and any defined benefit pension plans, is less than $25,000. Nine percent report totals of $25,000 to $49,999, 11 percent have $50,000 to $99,999, 15 percent are at $100,000 to $249,999 and 21 percent have $250,000 or more. But when many of those who have saved very little call my radio show or podcast, they don’t actually seem stressed. They are clear-eyed about their priorities and seem to know what they need to do. But for those who have managed to accumulate some money, usually $100,000 or more, that’s when the worries seem to start. Perhaps the stress comes from not knowing or fearing what lies ahead. According to RCS, although so many are anxious about the future, a whopping 62 percent of workers have not actually calculated how much money they will need to have saved so that they can live comfortably in retirement.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: “All you have to do is go to the County Building on election day. You couldn’t find a county employee anywhere—they’re all working a precinct. You have patronage, and then you’ve got pinstripe patronage, which is all these bond counselors and contractors and construction persons who contribute heavily to campaigns. Regular patronage is: work as precinct captain equals a job in the forest preserve. Pinstripe patronage is: contribute to me, and I’ll throw you a no-bid contract. Pinstripe patronage is all the change orders in contracts, all the bond counseling—and $13 million of consultants this year. Come on. How much can a consultant tell you that you don’t already know? “We are looking at a situation where being elected means having the money to buy television time. George Dunne used to raise maybe $80,000. Now we have people raising $3 million, $4 million to win a county-wide office because they’re buying television time. Who ends up paying for that television time? The taxpayer. Because the construction projects continue, the consulting contracts continue, the building continues, the change orders continue, the patronage continues—and it just gets bigger and bigger. And the same people make the donations that pay for the candidate to be on TV.”)

ZERO HEDGE

https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2018-05-12/audible-gasp-was-heard-when-chicago-fed-unveiled-its-solution-pension-problem
(FROM THE ARTICLE: An audible gasp went out in the breakout room I was in at last month’s pension event cosponsored by The Civic Federation and the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. That was when a speaker from the Chicago Fed proposed levying, across the state and in addition to current property taxes, a special property assessment they estimate would be about 1% of actual property value each year for 30 years. Evidently, that wasn’t reality-shock enough. This week the Chicago Fed published that proposal formally. It’s linked here. It surely ranks among the most blatantly inhumane and foolish ideas we’ve seen yet. Homeowners with houses worth $250,000 would pay an additional $2,500 per year in property taxes, those with homes worth $500,000 would pay an additional $5,000, and those with homes worth $1 million would pay an additional $10,000. Is the Chicago Fed blind to human consequences? Confiscatory property tax rates have already robbed hundreds of thousands, maybe millions, of Illinois families of their home equity — probably the lion’s share of whatever wealth they had. Property taxes in many Illinois communities already exceed 3%, 4% and even 5% of home values. Across Illinois, the average is a sky-high 2.67 percent, the highest in the nation.)

— The Long, Tortured History of the Job Guarantee How liberals, over decades, worked to undermine a proposal that has long enjoyed public support – PETER-CHRISTIAN AIGNER and MICHAEL BRENES (DIERSEN: Since 1966, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes who were not federal employees have always shouted that the federal government is the “employer of last resort” and that federal employees are lazy, stupid, and even worse things. They, and many millions of others, have not and will not seek a job with the federal government a) because the pay and benefits are terrible, b) because the advancement opportunities are terrible, c) because they lack required education, work experience, professional certifications, and/or professional licenses, d) because they cannot pass an employment examination, e) because they cannot pass a background investigation, f) because they cannot pass a physical examination, g) because they cannot take the demonization, denigration, and condemnation that comes with being a federal employee or federal retiree, and/or h) because they are Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran and they know that the federal government discriminates against the aforesaid.)
https://newrepublic.com/article/148388/long-tortured-history-job-guarantee
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Very soon after LBJ’s War on Poverty began, various government departments began pushing for direct job-creation and calling for the government to become “employer of last resort,” ideas JFK and LBJ had many times rejected. But domestic welfare was subsumed by the war. Hubert Humphrey carried the banner in 1968, promoting federal planning for jobs, housing, and community development. But when he lost to Nixon, reformers in the party rejected this approach. “New Politics” Democrats turned to George McGovern, who implied that postwar Keynesianism had failed, and instead offered a far less popular solution with voters (and the poor): a “demogrant,” or universal basic income (UBI). Every American would receive an annual income of $1,000, instead of a job. The debate between “guaranteed” jobs or income played out in the 1972 primary between Humphrey and McGovern. Each candidate battled for the soul of the Democratic Party, with two competing versions for resolving unemployment and poverty. In Humphrey’s corner were the NAACP and AFL-CIO. Remnants of the anti-war movement and wealthy suburban liberals backed McGovern.)

GOVERNMENT EXECUTIVE
— A Tweak to Rules for Resigning From Your Job and More – Erich Wagner (DIERSEN: My Democrat superiors in the federal government always treated me like I was “under investigation,” like they had found me guilty, and like they were punishing me. My Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, gave me unfair performance expectations and appraisals, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, got rid of my mentor in 1987, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take an $19,203 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980. My Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, got rid of my mentor in 1975, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974. My Democrat Post Office superiors forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests in 1969 and 1968.)
https://www.govexec.com/pay-benefits/pay-benefits-watch/2018/05/tweak-resignation-rules-retirement-claims-wane-and-more/148080/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Office of Personnel Management on Monday issued a memo tweaking the rules governing how agencies handle employees who resign while under investigation. In a memo to chief human capital officers, OPM Director Jeff Pon implemented a new provision of the 2017 National Defense Authorization Act requiring agencies to make a “permanent notation” on the personnel file of someone who leaves his or her job while an investigation into the employee is ongoing. Such investigations include those done by an inspector general and adverse personnel actions for performance or misconduct. Pon wrote that the notation should be applied to one’s record only after the person has been given an opportunity to respond to the findings of an investigation. The new procedure does not impact an employee’s ability to appeal the findings of an investigation or adverse action to the Merit Systems Protection Board, and if the employee wins, the agency would remove the notation from his or her record.)

— JANUARY 26, 2016 FLASHBACK: 600 ‘requests’ from Benghazi for better security: What this statistic really means – Glenn Kessler (DIERSEN: My critics/opponents hint/imply/argue/shout that there is no need for Illinois Republican Party (IRP) State Central Committee (SCC) members to communicate with Republican Precinct Committeemen/Captains directly because they communicate with a) Randy Pollard, the President of the Illinois Republican County Chairman’s Association, b) the chairmen of the Republican county/township/ward party organizations in their district, and c) the Republican elected officials in their district. However, far too often, far too many of the aforesaid fail/refuse to communicate with Republican Precinct Committeemen/Captains. I should write a book about it. Far too often, far too many of them communicate only with those Republican Precinct Committeemen who a) glorify and praise them, b) pander to them, c) serve as their operative or dupe, and/or d) give them money.)
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/fact-checker/wp/2016/01/26/600-requests-from-benghazi-for-better-security-what-this-statistic-really-means/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A key point that Republicans on the committee have tried to make was that Ambassador Chris Stevens — who perished in the 2012 attacks on U.S. facilities that left three others dead — did not directly communicate with Clinton on her private email system. (Generally, ambassadors would send messages through the chain of command.) So none of these came directly from Stevens to Clinton, “asking for help,” as Trump put it.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Nothing says classy quite like death. That is, dying in a way that gives back to others, whether that’s giving your possessions to charity or making your life’s accomplishments an example of what hard work and determination can earn. However, there’s one way we can all give back in death: ourselves. No, not in a metaphorical sense. Our bodies are rich in carbon, bacteria and other stuff that naturally decomposes into the environment with relative ease. That being said, it seems odd that to this day burial seems to be the preferred route of putting a loved one to eternal rest. Burial of an entire body in a metal and plastic coffin seems so off-putting and gaudy, not to mention contrary to the natural process of decomposition. While there are certain religious justifications, nonetheless the modern practice of burial is environmentally unfriendly and creates a future environmental crisis. Graveyards alone contain hundreds if not thousands of bodies, both subterranean and in mausoleums. With a large elderly and baby boomer population beginning to die off, many of these locations will be hard pressed to make room for more. The process, money and storage it takes to put the deceased in their own plot of land or on a marble shelf makes no sense. Furthermore, the resources that go into burials aren’t necessarily friendly to the earth. Since most coffins are made of plastic and varying metal alloys, they aren’t really known for their ability to break down. While the idea of being able to visit a loved one’s final resting place can be therapeutic or provide emotional closure, this practice is as wasteful as it is impractical.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: In a country that fetishizes youth, writing a book subtitled Why Life Gets Better After 50 is practically an act of revolution. But that’s exactly what the Jonathan Rauch has done. The Happiness Curve: Why Life Gets Better After 50 is a mind-blowing synthesis of social science and deeply moving personal accounts that will change the way you think about every stage of your life. Whether you’re in your early twenties, the thick of middle age, or your golden years, The Happiness Curve will help to explain not just what’s going on in your life now, but what to expect down the road. Ever-increasingly, Illinois Democrats focus on driving individuals, organizations, and companies out of Illinois that are Trump supporters, Protestant, conservative, patriotic, Republican, American, White, male, older, rich, gun owners, German American, and/or those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time. CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Former Lake in the Hills cop in prison for sex assault on teen girl will keep $84K pension – George Houde (DIERSEN: How much is the pension that you a) are in line to get or b) are getting? Of course, since 1997, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have hinted/implied/argued/shouted that my COLA-adjusted Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) pension, currently $51,864/year, is excessive. In my defense, I worked for federal government for almost 30 years – almost 3 years for the Post Office 1966-1969, almost 9 years for IRS 1971-1980, and almost 18 years for GAO 1980-1997. In today’s dollars, my ending GS-13 Step 10 GAO salary was $125,325. My $51,864/year CSRS pension is $6,224/year less because my Democrat GAO superiors succeeded in forcing me to take their early retirement “offer” in 1997 and suffer a 12% early retirement penalty (2% X 6 years). Of course, my CSRS pension would be much higher if my Democrat superiors in the federal government had not wasted my career and forced me to take their early retirement “offer” in 1997 when I was 49 years old. If the Democrats who run the federal government had promoted me into their Senior Executive Service, my CSRS pension would be $131,360/year (80% of $164,200/year.)

http://www.dailyherald.com/news/20180511/district-200-school-board-teachers-union-ink-4-year-contract
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Union members will receive across-the-board base salary increases of 2.5 percent in the first year. The district will determine annual salary increases in remaining years by averaging the rate of inflation over two levy years. The pact also establishes a 2.5 percent floor and 3.5 percent ceiling for annual cost-of-living raises in the remaining years. A first-year teacher now makes $44,525. Under the new contract, that teacher will make $45,416. The highest-paid teacher under the previous agreement received $114,616. The new contract eliminates scheduled salary steps based on longevity in the district, so there won’t be a set top salary. Instead, teachers will receive lane increases tied to their education and professional development.)

http://qctimes.com/opinion/editorial/editorial-thumbs-up-thumbs-down/article_b32a8a4e-82c4-5c0b-b141-c165f47eea0b.html
(FROM THE EDITORIAL: Illinois’ Republican governor won’t say whether he would back a state ratification of the long-stalled Equal Rights Amendment. The center-right politician is battling conservatives angered by his handling of abortion and immigration. And he’s facing Democrats frothing over his role in Illinois’ continued budgetary morass. We supported Rauner because he was precisely the kind of Republican the country needs. He’s business minded. He’s not interested in waging a culture war. He’s a man whose party has abandoned him. And that’s unfortunate. But, decades ago, Illinois was key player in stalling the proposed constitutional amendment that would guarantee women equal rights. The country has changed. And Rauner should muster Republican support in the Illinois House in order to ensure its passage.)

http://www.intellectualconservative.com/google-censoring-christian-ads/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Google said no to the conservative Lutheran publisher because … it’s religious. Concordia Publishing House CEO Bruce Kintz says Google will no longer accept ads for its Remarketing AdWords program because “the items in the ad and on the CPH website refer to Jesus and/or the Bible.” According to a Concordia press release, Google told CPH its ads were “disabled due to a violation of Google’s policy for advertising based on interests and location.” When CPH objected, the company told them it did not allow remarketing ads based on Christian beliefs. CPH could either remove the offending words or apply for a different type of ad. When asked, the Google rep refused to send the decision to reject the ads up for review. Remarketing ads are targeted at users who have visited a website. Google describes them as showing “ads to people who’ve visited your website or used your mobile app. When people leave your website without buying anything, for example, remarketing helps you reconnect with them by showing relevant ads across their different devices.”)

Cuomo and the New York State Department of Financial Services (NYDFS) aimed to deprive the NRA of its right to “speak freely about gun-related issues and defend the Second Amendment,” the group said in the suit, referring to part of the U.S. Constitution that protects the right of Americans to bear arms.)

AMERICAN PROSPECT
— OPM Director Wants Federal Workers to Join Retirement Race to the Bottom Few civil servants work for the federal government to get rich, but at least they can count on a decent pension. The Trump administration wants to change all that. – MANUEL MADRID (DIERSEN: My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes are beyond furious that since 1997 when I was 49 years old, I have gotten a) a Civil Service Retirement System pension and b) a federal health, dental, and vision insurance subsidy. My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes who share my demographics never could/would have done what I did to earn the aforesaid. To get my Post Office job, I passed the Post Office’s employment test in 1966, earned a high school diploma in 1966, and met the job’s many other requirements. To get my IRS job, I passed the Federal Service Entrance Examination in 1970, earned a job-related bachelor’s degree in 1970, and met the job’s many other requirements. I get my GAO job, I earned a job-related master’s degree in 1976, passed the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979, suffered a $19,203/year (26%) pay cut in today’s dollars, and met the job’s many other requirements. I overcame tremendous efforts by my Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates to waste my career and to get rid of me. Because I have always been a Republican, were it not for federal civil service protections, a) the Post Office would NOT have hired me in 1966 or let me work there for almost 3 years, b) IRS would NOT have hired me in 1971 or let me work there for almost 9 years, c) IRS would NOT have promoted me in 1972, 1973, or 1974, d) GAO would NOT have hired me in 1980 or let me work there for almost 18 years, and e) GAO would NOT have promoted me in 1986.)

— Will Lake County Board enter the gun control debate? – Lee Filas (DIERSEN: Which of your county board members support the Second Amendment and which do not? Needless-to-say, county board members who got elected as Republicans, but do not support the Second Amendment, should immediately resign.)
http://www.dailyherald.com/news/20180508/will-lake-county-board-enter-the-gun-control-debate-
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Lake County Board members could soon find themselves in a debate whether to place support behind gun control regulations or whether to send a letter to state legislators declaring the county a “sanctuary” against stricter gun laws. Thomas Quigley, of Round Lake Beach, and military veteran Ceasar Soto, of Waukegan, appeared Tuesday before the Lake County Board to speak out against a previous statement made by District 11 county board member Paul Frank about a possible ban of automatic weapons. Quigley requested board members immediately declare Lake County “a sanctuary county for all gun owners,” then told “the gun grabbers on the board to read the U.S. Constitution and study history; all governmental tyranny begins with gun confiscation.” Quigley and Soto spoke up because of statements made during the closing moments of the March 13 county board meeting where Frank, a Democrat from Highland Park, hinted it could be time the board enters the debate on the national gun issue.)

She said a state created group should not be based on sex segregation and cited major media to prove her point. The Atlantic shows boys dominate in high school drop outs and learning disabilities, and the Washington Post revealed boys in America continue to fall behind girls in academics, according to Ives. Ives questioned the bill’s legality as far as the Equal Rights Amendment is concerned and noted as a mother of boys and a girl, the notion to form a group for one gender is ridiculous. “I think we should emphasize both of our children’s sexes, both men and women as well,” Ives said. NEW YORK TIMES
— The U.S. and China: More Alike Than We’d Like? – Thomas L. Friedman
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/08/opinion/us-china-more-alike.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In Washington these days it is not uncommon for people to be invited to a dinner or a public gathering and think to themselves: “I hope none of them will be there.” And the them people are talking about is not someone of a different faith or race — which would be awful enough — but it’s someone just from a different political party. In other words, in both Beijing and Washington, self-censorship, and biting one’s tongue, is more rife than ever — but for different reasons. In Beijing it’s so you won’t get arrested. In Washington it’s so you won’t get into a fight. In both cases, though, the net results are fewer people talking truth across ideological lines. At the same time, in China today, if you’re a Communist Party official or senior bureaucrat, you have to toe the ruling party’s line or you could be quickly purged or imprisoned. In America today, if you’re a Republican Party congressman or senator, you, too, have to toe the ruling party’s line or you could be quickly purged or primaried — or get a tweet in the back from the president. But there is one difference: In China’s ruling Communist Party, it’s never safe to criticize the president. In America’s ruling Republican Party, you can criticize the president, or vote your conscience, if you’re dying, retiring or whispering.)

In the 2002 Illinois Republican gubernatorial primary, Corrine Wood called Jim Ryan an extremist.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: A state lawmaker is lambasting Gov. Bruce Rauner after Illinois’ top leader met with members of the McHenry County Republican Party over the weekend in private. Rauner spent part of his Saturday at an invitation-only roundtable at the McHenry County GOP’s Crystal Lake headquarters – an event featuring a Who’s Who of party insiders, including: McHenry County Sheriff Bill Prim, McHenry County State’s Attorney Patrick Kenneally and McHenry County Board Member Jim Kearns. But State Rep. David McSweeney, R-Barrington Hills, took issue with someone else in attendance at the Saturday meet-up: McHenry County’s new chairwoman, Diane Evertsen, who at one time served as president of the Minutemen Midwest – an organization the Southern Poverty Law Center designated a “nativist extremist” group. “The governor should apologize for meeting with a known extremist,” said McSweeney, who heard about the meeting after it happened. McSweeney pointed to Evertsen’s association with Minutemen Midwest, which the SPLC named several times on its annual list of nativist extremist groups between 2007 and 2010. The Alabama-based civil rights nonprofit defines nativist extremist groups as organizations that go beyond mere advocacy to personally confront suspected undocumented immigrants or those who hire or help them. McSweeney said a simple Google search reveals the views of the group Evertsen chaired. The legislator characterized those views as “disgraceful.” Minutemen Midwest had a website – www.minutemenmidwest.com – but it has been taken down since its launch. While the site is dead, some of the material published there is recoverable with the internet archive known as the “Wayback Machine,” McSweeney said. McSweeney highlighted an article published on the website written by William H. Calhoun titled “Illegal Immigration: Third-World Invasion” – a piece suggesting the U.S. is under threat by immigrants of different “blood.” “Invaders from the Orient, Asia, Africa, Central and South America are invading the first world, and they are intent only upon conquest,” the article said. “With the exception of a very small upper class of pure European blood, most Mexicans are either Amerindian or Mestizo (mostly Amerindian with a few drops of Spaniard or African blood). They are not Western; genealogically they are Asiatic; and they despise the West.” The article appalled McSweeney, he said. “It’s probably the most extreme article that I’ve read in a long time,” McSweeney said. “It’s disgusting.” Evertsen, a 73-year-old Harvard grandmother who once served on the McHenry County Board and now serves on McHenry County College’s board of trustees, could not be reached for comment. The Northwest Herald also reached out to Gov. Rauner’s campaign communications director for comment, but campaign officials weren’t immediately available Tuesday. About 20 people attended the Saturday gathering, according to sources invited to the event.)

(FROM THE LETTER: Are you kidding me, Springfield? The state of Illinois is imploding at a frightening rate, and you’re focused on passing a bill that forces our schools to teach LGBT history? (Paid for by our outrageous property taxes, by the way.) This bill (SB3249) also requires schools to teach about the illegal deportation of Mexicans during the Great Depression and labor union contributions to our economy. And children will not be permitted to graduate eighth grade if they don’t receive this instruction. Holy political agenda, Democrats! But, perhaps you are sincerely interested in teaching our children an accurate and nondiscriminatory account of our history. If this is true, you must necessarily include a unit on the societal benefits that Catholics have contributed toward Illinois’ schools, hospitals and charities. The impact is quite significant. I would encourage anyone reading this to demand that your particular group be recognized in a mandatory history unit as well. After everyone feels good about being recognized, there might be a few minutes left in the school day for reading, writing and arithmetic.)

https://www.wsj.com/articles/companies-trying-to-deal-with-discrimination-face-backlash-1525604400
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Companies trying to rectify a legacy of discrimination are finding that some tactics are backfiring and sparking new grievances. The Wing, a women’s shared-office space and networking club, has drawn such ire. Its no-men-allowed membership policy for collaboration spaces in trendy New York neighborhoods is designed to attract like-minded women professionals who want to encourage and invest in one another. The Wing recently opened a Washington, D.C., location and there is a wait list for a future office in Los Angeles, the company says. In March, the New York City Human Rights Commission launched an investigation into the Wing’s practices, which include workshops on political organization and panels reserved for members featuring celebrities and U.S. legislators. Seth Hoy, a spokesman for the New York commission, confirmed the agency’s probe and declined to comment on it further. He says the agency works to ensure that businesses comply with laws prohibiting gender discrimination. The inquiry is one of the latest examples of how female-only initiatives and other diversity efforts are drawing objections from those who feel left out or challenge the idea that people in historically underrepresented groups need targeted resources to help them accelerate in their careers and are raising concerns that the programs unfairly exclude other people.)
