CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
— Illinois GOP signals support for Republican tax plan, but does Rauner? – Tina Sfondeles (DIERSEN: From what I see, outrageously, under “Republican tax plan,” the more that your itemized deductions have been, the more federal income tax that you will pay. My and my wife’s 2016 federal income tax return shows that we had $30,890 in itemized deductions. We paid $21,433 in medical and dental expenses and we were able to deduct $13,859 of that, we paid $12,835 in real estate taxes, we paid $1,468 in state income taxes, and we made $2,728 in 501(c)(3) contributions. From what I see, outrageously, the proposed “tax reform” is designed to a) punish those who have high medical and dental expenses, b) discourage homeownership, and c) discourage taking job-related graduate courses. Government should encourage homeownership. The deductibility of mortgage interest and real estate taxes a) encouraged me to buy a new town home in 1972 when I was 24 years old, a studio condo in 1974, and a one bedroom condo in 1976 and b) encouraged my wife and I to buy a home in 1978 and to have one built in 1984. Further, government should encourage getting job-related education. The deductibility of job-related education encouraged me to take job-related graduate courses 1972-1983 and 1992-1997.)

WASHINGTON POST
— House to vote on lengthening trial period for federal employees from one to two years – Eric Yoder (DIERSEN: My Democrat GAO superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates were furious that when I transferred from IRS to GAO in 1980 when I was 31 years old, that because I had been under a probationary period at IRS, I was not under a probationary period at GAO. Nevertheless, they did everything that they could to get rid of me. They forced me to take an $18,847 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980. GAO audits IRS. They kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO. They gave me unfair performance expectations and unfair performance appraisals. They assigned me to work for, to work with, and to supervise the office’s most problematic employees. They did not promote me beyond GS-13. They always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes. They forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, and even worse things. In my defense, I completed the requirements for a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul in 1980, passed the Certified Internal Auditor examination on my first attempt in 1981, became a licensed CPA in 1981, a Certified Fraud Examiner in 1990, a Certified Government Financial Manager in 1994, a Certified Financial Services Auditor in 1996, and a Forensic Accountant in 1997. In addition, I completed the requirements for a master’s degree in financial markets and trading from IIT in 1997.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Gutierrez federal pension estimated at $62,000 a year – Katherine Skiba
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-luis-gutierrez-pension-20171129-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: When U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez moves on from Congress to whatever is next for him, he could qualify for a federal pension of about $62,000 per year, a Washington group estimates. Federal pension details aren’t made public as they are for state officials and teachers. The estimate comes from the National Taxpayers Union, which since the late 1970s has calculated congressional pensions based on available data. Pete Sepp, the organization’s president, said the estimate assumes Gutierrez elected for his wife to be paid an annuity upon his death. His annual payout would be higher if he didn’t. Members of Congress also may receive a 401(k)-style supplement to their pensions if they made contributions, Sepp said. The calculation takes into account how long a lawmaker was in office. When Gutierrez entered Congress in 1993, the annual pay was $133,600. He has been paid $174,000 a year since 2009, when members of Congress last had a raise, according to the Congressional Research Service. In announcing he won’t run for re-election, Gutierrez said his plans included traveling the country with his wife, Soraida. Since 2010, Gutierrez has paid her a total of nearly $400,000 from his campaign war chest for help on his re-election campaigns, Federal Election Commission records show. The figure does not include reimbursements for office supplies and other expenses. During the first nine months of this year, he paid her a total of $42,000 in seven increments of $6,000 each. Reports show she has been paid for acting as his treasurer or account manager and for management and fundraising.)

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
— Tax reform: ‘Middle class’ is in eye of beholder – Lynn Sweet and Ashlee Rezin (DIERSEN: From what I see, outrageously, under proposed “tax reform,” the more that your itemized deductions have been, the more federal income tax that you will pay. My and my wife’s 2016 federal income tax return shows that we had $30,890 in itemized deductions. The deductibility of job-related education encouraged me to take job-related graduate courses 1972-1983 and 1992-1997.)
https://chicago.suntimes.com/politics/tax-reform-middle-class-eye-beholder/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Complicating matters: For all the talk about giving the middle class tax breaks, Democrats are skeptical that repealing a variety of popular deductions — such as for state taxes, a big one for Illinois — will yield the promised relief. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., said in CNN on Sunday, “the tax breaks for working families, half of them will see a tax increase, half a tax break. Those disappear, as Senator Graham just mentioned,” a Durbin reference to a provision that expires in 2027. “But the tax cuts for wealthiest people are permanent. That’s just unfair, and that’s why half of the American people are skeptical about this Trump tax plan,” Durbin said. . .Rep. Peter Roskam, R-Ill., is on the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee and in a recent Sun-Times interview was asked what he considered middle-class income. He had no specific number. Neither did Trump White House Council of Economic Advisers chair Kevin Hassett when asked several weeks ago. “This is so fascinating because when you talk about middle income, it’s a very broad description,” Roskam said. “When you talk about who is wealthy, it is generally people saying, well, ‘I’m not wealthy, it’s somebody else.’” “And, we’ve had a wide range of opinions,” with places in the country “where $80,000 of household income is a whole lot of money and you have other areas around the country where $80,000 is not a whole lot of money. So it really is in the eyes of the beholder.”)
— Gutierrez: From chopping up ‘pig innards’ to owning $1.1M second home – Dan Mihalopoulos
https://chicago.suntimes.com/news/gutierrez-from-chopping-up-pig-innards-to-owning-1-1m-second-home/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Gutierrez, who turns 64 next month, reported investments worth a total of between $1,325,022 and $2,975,000 at the end of 2015. That amount — which did not include his home in his 4th Congressional District — ranked 147th among the 435 House members, the Center for Responsive Politics said. He cashed in more than $1 million of those assets in 2016, lowering his total investments to somewhere between about $662,000 and $1.56 million, according to his most recent disclosure statement, which was filed in August. Gutierrez said that money went toward the June 2016 purchase of the new house in Puerto Rico for $1.1 million. “It cost us another couple hundred thousand dollars to rehab,” he said. “I bought a house that was then under construction for all of 2016.” . . . Gutierrez — who is paid $174,000 a year as a congressman — said he’s been smart with his personal finances but always acted appropriately as an elected official. “I’ve been fighting for people, doing my job, and ain’t nobody ever questioned my integrity,” he said, predicting that this article would be a “negative story.” For years, Gutierrez invested heavily in Chicago’s residential real estate market, moving repeatedly as he made hundreds of thousands of dollars buying and selling homes in the city. Although he described himself as a “walking open book,” he added, “It’s not important to look at what somebody is doing and what they’re buying. Big deal.” Assuming Gutierrez completes this final term in Congress in January 2019, he would have served 25 years in Washington and be eligible for a full pension of about $67,860 per year. Gutierrez also is eligible for Social Security. His payment would depend on the age he decided to start drawing a Social Security check, with maximum benefits reached by waiting until the age of 70. Before becoming a congressman, Gutierrez was an alderman representing the 26th Ward, the heart of the city’s Puerto Rican community. Chicago pension fund officials wouldn’t immediately say if he’s getting retirement benefits from the city or what those payments would be. His Gutierrez for Congress political committee has paid his wife, Soraida, nearly $400,000 for fundraising and for serving as treasurer and manager for the campaign fund during the past eight years, according to Federal Election Commission records. She was paid $42,000 by the campaign between the start of this year and Sept. 30. From 2003 and 2009, Soraida Gutierrez lobbied state government. The couple’s 37-year-old daughter Omaira Figueroa worked as a staffer for the Chicago City Council and now is on the state of Illinois payroll, with a $68,208-a-year salary as a “consumer counselor” for the Illinois Commerce Commission. Gutierrez often has highlighted the long road between his humble origins and where he ended up as a political power player. “After all, I’m the Puerto Rican son of a cabdriver and a factory worker, a kid who chopped up pig innards and swept the floor of an unsuccessful restaurant, a guy who had to drive a cab on the night shift to make ends meet,” he wrote in his autobiography, “Still Dreaming: My Journey from the Barrio to Capitol Hill.”)

The last few years I worked, an additional course on the prevention of sexual assault was required. Apparently, our esteemed members of Congress were exempt from this training and now must pass a bill so that they will be required to get such training. People in such positions know how to behave in the workplace. These men know exactly what they are doing. Years ago, when I was a teenager, my mother told me that it’s a man’s world. — Illinois Supreme Court’s health care ruling will cost city retirees – Fran Spielman (DIERSEN: Who wants your retirement benefits to be cut, if not eliminated? Of course, my critics/opponents want the federal government to cut, if not eliminate its 75% health, dental, and vision insurance subsidy. Currently, for my wife and I, that subsidy is $17,288/year. We pay only $5,763/year for $23,051/year worth of health, dental, and vision insurance. Overwhelmingly, my critics/opponents in Wheaton, in Glen Ellyn, in Milton Township, in DuPage County, and in Illinois despise, if not hate federal employees and federal retirees. https://chicago.suntimes.com/chicago-politics/illinois-supreme-courts-health-care-ruling-will-cost-city-retirees/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: More than 20,000 city employees and retirees have been dealt a crushing blow that could cost them dearly, but end up saving Chicago taxpayers $130 million a year. In a six-word ruling on Thanksgiving eve, the Illinois Supreme Court refused to hear the retirees’ appeal of a state Appellate Court ruling that essentially upheld Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s now-completed, three-year phase-out of retiree health care coverage and a 55 percent city subsidy for anyone who did not retire by Aug. 23, 1989. Clint Krislov, an attorney representing the retirees, said the decision means those retirees are entitled only to bare-bones protections outlined by lower courts. “For the city, this is a huge benefit. The amount they’re paying is dropped from $137 million a year to between $7 million and $8 million,” Krislov said Monday. “What the [lower courts] have said is that all you get is what’s in the statute. You cannot rely on anything the city tells you unless you can prove that person had authority to bind the city.” Law Department spokesman Bill McCaffrey refused to comment on the ruling while there is “still litigation pending.”)

POLITICO
— APRIL 25, 2017 FLASHBACK: Capitol Hill correspondents committee declines to credential Breitbart – HADAS GOLD (DIERSEN: All news organizations engage in political advocacy. Illegitimate news organizations deny that they engage in political advocacy. GOPUSA ILLINOIS is a legitimate news organization because it proudly states that advocates for the Republican Party platform.)
https://www.politico.com/blogs/on-media/2017/04/25/capitol-hill-correspondents-committee-breitbart-237577
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Capitol Hill Standing Committee of Correspondents has voted to table Breitbart News’ credential process and declined to extend the organization’s temporary credentials to cover Congress, which expire at the end of May. The committee, which permits media access to the U.S. Capitol only to outlets it considers legitimate news organizations, not political advocacy or other groups, expressed frustration over Breitbart’s inconsistent answers to questions about its masthead and office space, among other problems. Breitbart CEO Larry Solov, in correspondence with the committee since its most recent meeting, asserted that Republican megadonor Rebekah Mercer had no editorial input, that a managing editor who also had a role in an advocacy group was no longer on the masthead, and that the site was having trouble finding office space in part because of security issues. The committee said Breitbart could reapply for credentials if it addresses the concerns. Otherwise, three staff members who currently have temporary credentials (which the site has had for more than two years) will no longer have access after May 31. Breitbart reporters could still attend events on Capitol Hill that are open to the public without the credentials, but the lack of credentials would limit their access in the complex and hamper their ability to get other credentials, such as permanent White House passes. “Breitbart News is unequivocally entitled to permanent Senate Press Gallery credentials and is determined to secure them,” Chad Wilkinson, a Breitbart spokesperson, said in a statement Tuesday. Among the issues raised by the Capitol Hill committee were concerns that members of Breitbart’s masthead, provided last month by Solov, were also employed by the Mercer-funded Government Accountability Institute, which was co-founded by now-White House chief strategist (and former Breitbart chairman) Steve Bannon. The GAI and the work and advocacy it does would not be in line with the committee’s guidelines for credentialing. In a letter to the committee, Solov said that although Managing Editor Wynton Hall was listed on the masthead as of last month, he actually resigned in February and the position “has remained vacant since then.” “We have fully and fairly cooperated with your inquiries in good faith and believe that we have met and responded to the concerns you have raised,” Solov wrote. Breitbart “is an editorially independent news organization and is entitled to and deserves issuance of its permanent Senate Press Gallery credentials.” The committee also noted that Bannon’s Office of Government Ethics financial disclosure had a different date for his separation from Breitbart than what Solov had indicated in their last meeting. Solov has asserted that Breitbart is completely editorially independent, without influence from Bannon or Mercer. But the committee expressed some doubts. “I don’t know how we get Breitbart to prove that Bannon isn’t picking up the phone and talking to them,” said standing committee chairman Billy House, a reporter with Bloomberg News. Last month, the committee, composed of five journalists, also expressed frustration that Breitbart may have misled them on where the site’s offices are located. A Capitol Hill townhouse, known as the “Breitbart Embassy,” had been provided as the address of the company’s Washington office, and the committee was told that Breitbart was leasing the space as a “mixed use” place for both corporate housing (often where Bannon stayed), events and office space. But the committee last month noted that the townhouse is not technically zoned for commercial use and that the owner of the house filed taxes as the sole occupant, meaning that a commercial lease would not even be legally possible. (Most Breitbart writers work remotely.) Solov told the committee that Breitbart has yet to find a new office space and likely would not for some time, partly because of security issues. “I still want to give them the benefit of doubt on these things, that it’s misunderstandings or confusion [instead of] something more nefarious, but we still have these office space issues,” said committee secretary Joseph Morton, who works for the Omaha World-Herald. “The whole thing suggests to me that they’re just not ready for a credential.” In another letter to the committee, sent two days ago, Solov argued that individual members of Breitbart would and should qualify for credentials. But the committee said it doesn’t credential individuals but instead looks at the entire organization and leadership. Solov also insinuated in the letter that there are other organizations that deserve the same scrutiny Breitbart is getting. “Without limitation, is it the Standing Committee’s position that a news organization cannot be credentialed if it employs any editor and/or reporter who is also employed by or affiliated with any advocacy group or non-profit?” he asked. “Of course, we respectfully assert that any such rules, standards and/or criteria must be reasonable and realistic, and transparent — and applied equally and fairly to all news organizations.” During the meeting on Tuesday, the committee said it would happily look into any credentialed reporter and potentially revoke their access if they were found to also be employed or affiliated with an advocacy or nonprofit group. “This is not content driven, we aren’t singling out Breitbart either for extra scrutiny or special treatment,” House said. “This is our job as a board, and these rules have been in place long before any of us came to the board. DAILY HERALD
— NOVEMBER 23, 2015 FLASHBACK: Some primary races shaping up in DuPage – Robert Sanchez (DIERSEN: The 30 candidates who were in line before 8:00 AM this morning in the following order were: Bucholz, Grogan, Berlin, Kachiroubas, Jorgensen, Holz, Olsen, Noonan, Bila, Sejnost, Krajewski, Tornatore, Diersen, Puchalski, Hinz, Novak, Anderson, Redick, Elliott, Wehrli, Falbo, Schultz, Blass, Moore, Dabrowski, Kordik, Larsen, Healy, Fisher, and Minor. Whelan, Zanis, and Grant got in line shortly after 8:00 AM. Of the aforesaid, the following 10 candidates will be on March 15, 2016 Republican primary ballots in my DuPage County Milton Township Precinct 9 and I gathered nominating petition signatures for them: Bucholz, Grogan, Berlin, Kachiroubas, Jorgensen, Diersen, Elliott, Moore, Whelan, and Grant. In addition, I gathered signatures for the following 7 candidates: Kirk, Roskam, Munger, Ives, Brennan, Fullerton, and Telander who will also be on the Republican primary ballots in my precinct; they either have filed in Springfield or will file in Springfield. I gathered a total of 761 signatures for the aforesaid 17 candidates from 44 households in my precinct.)
http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20151123/news/151129662/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: More than a dozen countywide, county board and forest preserve candidates lined up outside the DuPage County Election Commission office Monday morning to file nominating petitions to enter the March 15 primary election. — DIERSEN HEADLINE: In an editorial unethically made to look like a news article titled “Chaotic year in immigration policy challenges Chicago,” the Democrats who run Chicago make it clear that they will get rid of individuals, organizations, and companies a) that do not encourage people to come to America illegally, b) that do not encourage people to stay in America illegally, and c) that do not encourage people to bring other people to America illegally. Constructively, the Democrats who run Chicago have declared war on America.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/immigration/ct-met-chicago-immigration-chaos-2017-story.html
— Retirement planning should include long-term care costs – AP (DIERSEN: What do you know about retirement? I have been retired for more than 20 years. What do you know about long-term care. Since 2009, I have been legally responsible for my 87-year-old aunt who has Alzheimer’s. She has lived in an assisted living facility since 2010 that currently costs $230/day. She did not attend college, she never married, she never had children, she had low-paying data entry jobs, she lived frugally, and she saved more than $600,000 for her retirement. But her retirement savings will be exhausted much sooner if the Republicans succeed in forcing her to pay income tax by taking away the medical deduction.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/lifestyles/health/sns-bc-us–on-the-money-long-term-care-20171115-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The U.S. government estimates that 70 percent of people aged 65 today will require some form of long-term care during their lives. Most of the time, that type of assistance is non-medical, including help with daily tasks such as bathing. The need can arise unexpectedly after a major illness or even suffering an injury from a fall. The costs of such care can easily outstrip retirement savings: A 65-year-old today can expect to incur $138,000 in long-term care costs over their lifetime, according to a 2017 Bipartisan Policy Center report. Two-thirds of Americans age 40 and up say they’ve done little or no planning for their long-term care needs, according to a poll conducted this year by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, with funding from the SCAN Foundation.)
— FRONT PAGE TOP OF FOLD WITH BIG COLOR PICTURE: Later start times, less homework: Here’s what elite schools are doing to help students cope with stress – Karen Ann Cullotta, Karen Berkowitz, Kimberly Fornek and Jennifer Johnson (DIERSEN: When you in high school, were you “college material?” While I attended Crete-Monee High School 1962-1966, I took college preparatory courses notwithstanding the fact that many, if not most, if not virtually everyone at the time viewed me as NOT being “college material.” Neither of my parents had attended college. My father was the first of his ancestors to earn a high school diploma. My mother never attended high school. I spent my junior and senior years and the summer in between washing dishes for the minimum wage in the basement of the S.S. Kresges in Chicago Heights. I just barely made into the top 20% of my class, my ACT score was only 24, I was draft bait, my eyesight could not be corrected to 20/20, I had partial red/green color blindness, and I had Osgood-Schlatter disease (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osgood%E2%80%93Schlatter_disease).)

FOX NEWS CHICAGO
— Rauner faces challenge from GOP in 2018 – AP
http://www.fox32chicago.com/news/local/rauner-faces-challenge-from-gop-in-2018
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Ives is getting support from an anti-abortion activist base that “is basically done with Rauner,” said Republican businessman Vince Kolber, who knocked on doors for Rauner in 2014 but is now volunteering for Ives’ campaign. Assuming Rauner makes it to the general election, some of those voters — an important part of the GOP base — could opt to stay home on Election Day rather than vote to give him a second term. Kolber, who has a home in Florida, said if Rauner wins the primary, he’ll consider registering to vote in Florida in November rather than support Rauner again. Ives said she’s “a party person” and will vote for the GOP nominee. But “My husband won’t. And neither will many of my friends.”  Ives’ candidacy could reinforce the image Rauner stressed during his successful 2014 campaign of being a moderate and an outsider, Gaines said. That could help him win over some independents and other voters looking for someone who’s more middle-of-the-road — the kind of Republican candidate Illinois voters have historically favored for statewide office — or not beholden to a political party. “It might generally help him if he can say ‘The establishment in both parties doesn’t like me because I’m shaking things up,’” Gaines said. Democrats already have been fighting it out for their party’s nomination. More than a half dozen Democrats have said they’re running, including state Sen. Daniel Biss, businessman Chris Kennedy and billionaire J.B. Pritzker. The candidate filing period ends Dec. 4. Candidates for statewide office must submit at least 5,000 valid signatures; people seeking to challenge the validity of a candidate’s petitions have until Dec. 11 to file an objection that would be considered before the ballot is finalized.)
— Shoppers crowd stores to support local businesses – Dakarai Turner (DIERSEN: How much money do you have to shop locally with? Since 1997, in today’s dollars, I have had $1,454,723 less dollars to shop locally with, that is, $72,135 less a year, $6,011 less a month, $1,403 less a week, and $200 less a day. In 1997, my Democrat GAO superiors succeeded in forcing me to take their early retirement “offer.” In 1997, in today’s dollars, my GAO salary was $122,991/year. But my Civil Service Retirement System pension is only $50,856/year, or 41% of that.)
http://www.fox32chicago.com/news/local/shoppers-crowd-stores-to-support-local-businesses
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Shoppers flocked to locally owned shops as part of Small Business Saturday. “Half of everyone in Illinois, half of everyone in America works for a locally-owned small business,” said Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner at a bakery in Chicago’s Little Village neighborhood. “They are providing jobs, creating products and developing services that drive our nation and the state of Illinois towards economic growth.”)

VINCE KOLBER
— Biography (DIERSEN: Sadly, according to people who presented themselves at Ive’s November 20, 2017 fundraiser as being spokespersons for Kolber, Kolbler did not want to speak with me and he wanted me to be evicted from the event because I am a “reporter.”
https://www.facebook.com/pg/VoteVinceKolber/about/?ref=page_internal
(BIOGRAPHY: Vince Kolber has called the 5th congressional district home for his entire adult life. Vince Kolber’s personal story matches the hopes, dreams and aspirations of his future constituents. Born of Polish immigrant stock, Vince learned the values of hard work and family that immigrants bring with them to America, home of the American Dream. The youngest of three brothers, Vince learned honesty and integrity at an early age. Vince was raised to be a good listener, to value the opinions of others and to seek opportunities to serve the community. Vince started his first job at 12, cleaning out dog kennels before rushing home to deliver the evening paper. Vince worked his way through school as a short order cook, janitor and truck driver, or as Vince likes to say: “I did whatever I could to support myself, be successful and make my parents proud. In Congress my goal is to create good-paying jobs, protect seniors and working families, and to ensure a better future and increase opportunity for every family and young adult in the 5th congressional district.” Vince left his boyhood home of West Seneca, New York, to attend Wharton, the business school at the University of Pennsylvania. Vince then earned his MBA from the University of Chicago, attending school at night while launching his own equipment leasing business focused on the transportation industry. Vince is the founder and principal of RESIDCO, which has supported the creation, expansion and maintenance of thousands of jobs here at home and across the country. Vince serves on the board of Little Sisters of the Poor and has always been active in his local community. Vince donates and helps raise money for the Sacred Heart Schools and the Big Shoulders Foundation, which provides support to Catholic schools in the most needy areas of inner city Chicago. Vince has also chaired the board of directors at St. Genevieve, a mostly Hispanic K-8 school on Chicago’s West Side. Vince is running for Congress on a platform of job creation, government living within its means, eliminating waste, fraud and abuse, stopping government from snooping into or interfering with our private lives, ending crony capitalism and corporate welfare while eliminating tax breaks for the privileged few in favor of lower tax rates for all. Most importantly, Vince will ensure those most in need have access to services they require. With your help, Vince Kolber will be elected Illinois’ newest congressman.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: With 70 percent of the NFL comprised of African-American players, according to Answers.com and Reference.com, there is a new reason for Goodell to toss and turn at night. American young adults are divided along racial lines when it comes to protests from NFL players during our national anthem, says a study from Ball State University and the University of Texas at Dallas. The study found African-American respondents were more likely than other ethnic groups to agree with forms of protests such as kneeling, sitting and fist-raising during the national anthem — while being less likely to support punishment of the players by either the NFL or team owners. That’s no surprise, given the divisive times we live in.)

— The Republican Tax on the Future – Editorial
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/25/opinion/sunday/the-republican-tax-on-the-future.html
(FROM THE EDITORIAL: Of all the lies Republican lawmakers and President Trump tell about their tax bills, the biggest whopper is that these windfall tax cuts for corporations and the wealthy would generate so much growth that they would pay for themselves. The House and Senate tax bills probably would provide a tiny lift to the economy for a couple years — enough, supporters no doubt hope, for them to cynically claim success. It’s what comes next that the G.O.P. glosses over: the addition of more than a trillion dollars to the federal debt in just 10 years. Far from paying for themselves, these cuts would leave a bill for several future generations to pay off. In other words, Republican leaders aren’t just trying to transfer money from current middle-class and poor Americans to corporations and the very wealthy. They are also trying to transfer money from future middle-class and poor Americans to corporations and the very wealthy.)

ANSWER: The failure/refusal of the Illinois Republican Party (IRP), DuPage County Republican Central Committee, the Milton Township Republican Central Committee, etc. to defend and advance the Republican Party platform and the IRP platform, and especially the following planks in those platforms: traditional family, right to life, immigration, illegal drugs, and equal opportunity (no race or gender based preference giving. Ever-increasingly, far too many “Republican” activists, candidates, elected officials, party leaders, major donors, political consultants, etc. promote LGBTQ activity, abortion, mass/illegal immigration, booze, gambling, pot, and other vices, race and gender based preference giving, age discrimination, political affiliation discrimination, patronage, and even worse things.)

— GOP tax bill draws fire from AARP, universities – NAOMI JAGODA
http://thehill.com/policy/finance/361614-gop-tax-bill-draws-fire-from-aarp-universities?rnd=1511653804
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The AARP has raised concerns about provisions in both the House and Senate bills, warning they would be harmful to older Americans. Both bills would increase the deficit and could trigger cuts to Medicare if Congress doesn’t waive sequestration rules for federal spending. The AARP is also concerned that many seniors would see their taxes go up under the bills. There are also provisions unique to the House and Senate bills that the group opposes. The AARP opposes the House’s push to repeal the deduction for medical expenses and the Senate’s push to repeal the ObamaCare individual mandate. Housing industry Key groups in the housing industry took issue with the tax bills even before they were released, warning that they reduce incentives for homeownership. Both bills would substantially increase the size of the standard deduction taxpayers can take. This would reduce the number of people who take the mortgage interest deduction and concentrate those who do claim the preference at the upper end of the income scale. The House bill would cap the mortgage interest deduction for new mortgages at the first $500,000, down from $1 million under current law, and would eliminate the deduction for second homes. It also would eliminate the deduction for state and local income and sales taxes and would cap the deduction for state and local property taxes at $10,000. The Senate bill does not curb the mortgage deduction, but it would completely eliminate the property-tax deduction. . .Charities Nonprofits have several concerns with the GOP’s legislation. The increase in the standard deduction in the House and Senate bills would reduce the number of people who would claim the itemized deduction for charitable contributions. Charities are concerned that this change could lead to a decline in charitable giving. Additionally, the House bill would scale back the “Johnson amendment” that prevents churches and other organizations with 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status from endorsing or opposing political candidates. Under the House bill, nonprofits would be allowed to engage in political speech from 2019 to 2023 as long as the speech is in the ordinary course of business and expenses related to the speech is minimal. Nonprofits generally oppose curbing the Johnson amendment because they think doing so would inject partisan politics into charities.)

http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20171124/ISSUE05/171129949/gop-tax-bill-one-turkey-that-shouldnt-be-pardoned
(FROM THE ARTICLE: But when it comes to individuals, congressional leaders like Illinois’ own Peter Roskam say, trust us—we’ll fix the tax code (later) and make sure that individual rates don’t increase. But don’t individuals who have to pay mortgage expenses, college bills, retirement and any number of things need to plan just as much as IBM does? I’d have more faith in this scheme if Congress made the individual rates permanent and corporate rates temporary. But then the big corporate donors who fuel the GOP wouldn’t buy it. Neither should you. Then there’s the disappearing exemption for state and local taxes, which the House wants to limit to $10,000 for home property taxes and the Senate would totally abolish. However you peddle it, this is a big diversion of resources from relatively high-tax states such as Illinois to lower-tax areas such as Texas (home to the chairman of the House Ways & Means Committee), which wants billions of our tax dollars to rebuild after yet another hurricane. Republicans used to oppose double taxation. But under these bills, money that’s already been snarfed up by local governments would be fully subject to federal income taxes. More: Interest payments on the kids’ college loans would no longer be deductible under the House bill. Many homeowners would lose out on deductions for interest on home mortgages. And to boot, to pay for corporate cuts, individual tax brackets would be adjusted for inflation differently with the effect that over the next decade, at least 20 percent of any tax cut would disappear for everyone earning under $200,000 a year, according to the Wall Street Journal.)

CBS NEWS
— GAO: A harsh financial reality facing retirees – STEVE VERNON (DIERSEN: What percent is or will be your retirement income of your preretirement income? My $50,856 Civil Service Retirement System pension is only 41 percent of ending GAO salary of $122,991 in today’s dollars. That is a) because my Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take an $18,847 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980; b) because my Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974; and c) because my Democrat Post Office superiors forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests in 1969 and 1968.)
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/a-harsh-financial-reality-facing-retirees/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Here’s a discomforting point made at the very beginning of a recent landmark report titled “The Nation’s Retirement System”: “Most financial advisers say retirees will need 70 percent or more of preretirement earnings to live comfortably.” Unfortunately, many older workers and retirees will fall far short of this goal. The report, prepared by the US Government Accountability Office (GAO), goes on to say one-third of households headed by someone age 65 and over received 90 percent or more of their retirement income from Social Security. That’s a problem because Social Security replaces only about 40 percent of an average wage earner’s income after retiring. According to Social Security’s “Fast Facts” publication, 62 percent of retirees received at least half of their income from Social Security in 2015. These numbers reveal the harsh reality facing most older workers and retirees: They’ll need to learn to live on income that’s a lot less than what financial planners commonly recommend. That result may be undesirable, depending on your circumstances, resiliency and resourcefulness. . .Many older Americans will need to adjust their lifestyle in one or more of these ways: Spend less Save more Work longer Stay healthy to keep working and not drain savings on medical bills Make smart choices to stretch every dollar These necessary action steps are the reality of retirement in 21st century America.)

The groups that have contributed the most people to the 1 percent since 1980 are: physicians; executives, managers, sales supervisors, and analysts working in the financial sectors; and professional and legal service industry executives, managers, lawyers, consultants and sales representatives. Without changes in these largely domestic services industries — finance, health care, the law — the United States would look like Canada or Germany in terms of its top income shares.)

— Middle-class seniors lose in tax reform – Rex Hutchison, Davenport (DIERSEN: I certainly hope that Bost, Davis, Hultgren, Kinzinger, LaHood, Roskam, and Shimkus will work hard in conference with the Senate to keep all the current itemized deductions and the personal exemption.)

(FROM THE LETTER: If you are retired, own your home, have a decent retirement income, and itemize your federal taxes, get ready to pay more to support the tax reform bills being debated in Congress. It is obvious that for many, particularly for retired seniors, these proposals will result in a considerable tax increase for those who can least afford it. If you’ve been frugal, don’t have a mortgage, have no dependent children, and itemize your federal income taxes, you can expect your tax bill to increase. The math is simple. Taking away the ability to deduct Iowa income taxes, property taxes, and losing the personal exemptions may very well result in significant tax increases of $1,200 a year or more. An additional $1.5 trillion added to the national debt has to be paid for. You can expect that an all-out effort to cut social programs such as Medicare will be launched to the detriment of retired couples. My wife and I believe in giving back to the community and donate regularly to charitable organizations. We can partially alleviate this increase in federal taxes by no longer supporting organizations that do so much good in our community. Make no mistake, while this may be a boon to corporations and the very wealthy, it is not a “great gift” to many middle-class seniors who have worked hard and have been fiscally responsible to provide a decent retirement. I encourage everyone to do the math and determine if this is really such a great gift.)

http://www.wjbdradio.com/afternoon-show-blog/2017/11/22/six-benefits-of-being-thankful
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Thanksgiving is all about food and football for a lot of us. But it’s also about being grateful. Here are six reasons to reflect and be thankful for what you’ve got tomorrow. And why you should try to do it every day, not just on Thanksgiving . . .It makes you more patient. A study last year gave people the option of getting a small amount of money immediately, or MORE money at a later date. The one’s who’d shown more gratitude in earlier tests were more likely to wait for the bigger payout. It’s good for relationships. A 2010 study found taking time to be grateful toward your partner makes you more connected, and boosts your overall satisfaction as a couple. You take better care of yourself. A study in 2013 showed that when you’re grateful, you’re also more likely to exercise, eat healthy, and go to the doctor on a regular basis. It can help you sleep. A 2009 study found a connection between gratitude and sleeping well. Possibly because it makes you more positive, which relaxes your nervous system. And you don’t lie in bed worrying so much. It gives you more willpower to make better decisions. It even works with food. For example, if you eat dinner tomorrow and then write a list of things you’re thankful for, you’ll be less likely to go back for seconds. It makes you happier. There’s something called the “Three Good Things” exercise, where you have to think of three good things that happened each day. Studies have shown it can help with depression, and boost your overall happiness.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Conservative activist Peter LaBarbera said the Tillerson transgender day statement was a “huge strategic and policy error.” “What’s wrong with these people?” he asked. “This is so bizarre. What do they hope to gain?” LaBarbera, president of Americans for the Truth About Homosexuality, criticized any maintenance of the previous administration’s overseas activism in regard the LGBT agenda, something not necessarily appreciated by many foreign countries. “This is typical of what people resented all over the world under Obama,” he said. “You are siding with homosexual advocacy, which is opposed all over the world.” “Other countries don’t share our recognition and even celebration of immorality,” continued LaBarbera. He concurred that support for so-called gay rights isn’t necessarily synonymous with human rights, and in fact often means taking away rights from those who aren’t on board with gay marriage. He pointed to the various U.S. small business owners who have been sued or otherwise persecuted for declining to take part in homosexual weddings. “You can respect and defend and celebrate human rights without celebrating LGBT identities and activism,” LaBarbera said. “We know that homosexual activists are very aggressive overseas, and for the U.S. to some on board with this as just another human right is ridiculous.” “We would have thought that these official acknowledgments would have ended with the Obama administration,” he continued, “and the fact that they are continuing under Trump is deeply troubling.”)

To support the GOP tax bill is to say that a) you want those who take the standard deduction to pay less federal income tax and b) you want those who itemize their deductions to pay more federal income tax. Overwhelmingly, a) those who take the standard deduction are renters and younger and are more likely to vote for Democrats and b) those who itemize their deductions are homeowners and older and are more likely to vote for Republicans. From what I see, Republican leaders want those who itemize their deductions to take the biggest tax hit. I itemized 1972-1977 and my wife and I have itemized since 1978. I should write a book about those who have taken the lead in marginalizing socially conservative Republican Precinct Committeemen in Milton Township and in DuPage County since 1999.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Conservative radio talk show host Dan Proft, who ran for governor in 2010, is pushing the Ives candidacy. She is utterly unknown, and needs money, like about $10 million, and some issues. Attacking the governor as pro-choice would (1) ingratiate Rauner to a lot of socially liberal independents, and would (2) isolate her as a one-issue fringe candidate. Rumors abound that mega-donor Dick Uihlien, who has given a lot of money to Republicans over the years, or even the Koch brothers, might fund Ives. But the Republican Governors Association will do everything possible to re-elect Rauner.)

ILLINOIS POLICY INSTITUTE
— THIS THANKSGIVING, NEARLY 1M ILLINOIS HOUSEHOLDS FORCED TO RELY ON FOOD STAMPS The failure of lawmakers to enact policies that spark growth will render millions of Illinoisans dependent on assistance for meals this holiday season. – Vincent Caruso (DIERSEN: Hopefully, the percentage of those on food stamps who fail/refuse to take “bad” jobs is small. My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have always demonized, denigrated, and condemned all the jobs that I have had as being “bad.” I did yard work and delivered newspapers 1962-1964; washed dishes 1964-1966; cleaned golf shoes, chipped slag, and pumped gasoline in 1966; delivered mail 1966-1969; worked on an automobile assembly line and as a security guard in 1970; sold tires, automotive services, and major appliances 1970-1971; pumped gasoline 1971-1972; collected delinquent taxes 1971-1980; and audited federal agencies 1980-1997. Further, hopefully, all those on food stamps are doing everything that they can to qualify themselves for better paying jobs. Notwithstanding the fact that my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have always viciously demonized me, viciously denigrated me, and viciously condemned me as being stupid and lazy, I nevertheless earned a) a job-related bachelor’s degree when I was 21 in 1970 and job-related master’s degrees when I was 27, 31, and 48, b) job-related professional certifications when I was 30, 32, 41, 45, 47, and 48, and c) a job-related professional license when I was 32.)

November 20 Evening Edition

GOPUSA ILLINOIS
— OCTOBER 5, 2017 FLASHBACK: Mike Connelly and Pat Hughes spoke very highly of Jeanne Ives at her outstanding fundraiser Thursday evening, October 5, 2017, at Arrowhead Golf Club in Wheaton. Hughes presented Ives with a $10,000 check from Illinois Liberty Pac. The 50+ attendees included Ron Almiron, Janice Anderson, Mike Barbier, Bob Biggins, Liam Brennan, Denise Cattoni, Lori Carlson, John Curran, Sal Falbo, Jay Fisher, Suzanne Fitch, Bob Grogan, Heidi Holan, Tonia Khouri, Chris LeVan, John Millner, Burt Miner, Nicole Prater, Mike Prueter, Richard Russo, Jan Shaw, Phil Suess, Dave Tornga, Karen Wilson, Jim Zay, and Stan Zegel. – Dave Diersen

DUPAGE POLICY JOURNAL
— Ives heads to Downers Grove for a powerhouse fundraiser – Hoang Tran (DIERSEN: Sadly, there will be no GOPUSA ILLINOIS report on this event like there was for Ive’s October 5, 2017 event (see above). Since 2000, I have attended many such events in my roles as the GOPUSA Illinois Editor and as a DuPage County Milton Township Republican Precinct Committeeman, and previously, as a TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois chairman (2005-2012) and as an Illinois Center Right Coalition Steering Committee member (2003-2007). Spokespersons for the event hosts talked and acted like had never heard of me or of my GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails. I had left a message with Ive’s House campaign that I wanted to attend the event and to let me know if there was any problem, but I learned after the event that the message did not get through. They stressed that the event was “closed to the media” and that the event hosts did not want any members of the news media at the event. Notwithstanding my appeals, spokespersons for the event hosts would not allow me to speak with any of the event hosts and succeeded in evicting me from the event. When I arrived early at the event, I learned that I had not been invited to attend a press conference that was in progress. I was offered the opportunity to attend the press conference and to ask Ives questions, but that was not why I was there. I was there to get information to post a report on the event similar to what I did for her October 5, 2017 event (see above). I stressed that my “attendees included” lists in such reports has always been limited to Republican elected officials, candidates, and party leaders, but that did not change their minds. At least my trip to the event was not a complete waste of my time. I got to meet Rich Morthland and I brought in a notarized petition for Ives. Previously, I had provided Ives with three notarized petitions for her House race. I might have been allowed to attend the event if had if I had contributed $1,000 to her campaign or if I had brought in petitions containing 200 signatures, but probably not because I am a member of the news media. GOPUSA ILLINOIS email subscriptions are worth at least $1,000/year and I hope that the Ives campaign reads the emails. Needless-to-say my nasty critics/opponents, their nasty operatives, and their nasty dupes are “rolling in the isles” with laughter because since 2000, they have shouted that I am NOT a member of the news media and that my GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails are worthless.)
https://dupagepolicyjournal.com/stories/511273902-ives-heads-to-downers-grove-for-a-powerhouse-fundraiser
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Continuing her tour of Illinois, Rep. Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton) is stopping in Downers Grove on Monday night to attend a private campaign fundraiser being hosted by several influential powerhouses. Ives has been campaigning rigorously for a run at the 2018 gubernatorial election, petitioning to challenge incumbent Gov. Bruce Rauner, whom she believed has failed as a Republican leader after he went against the party on important measures such as taxpayer funded abortions and property tax reform. “He has basically discredited himself as a Republican,” Ives said in an interview on “Chicago Tonight” on WTTW. “He’s signed into law very extreme measures. The man who said he had no social agenda ended up having only a social agenda.” The hosts of the Downers Grove fundraiser include Vince Kolber, Ed Bachrach, Virginia McCaskey and Gary Rabine. Kolber is an entrepreneur and civic leader and was a candidate for the 5th Congressional District in 2016. Bachrach is the former chairman and CEO of Bachrach Clothing Inc., a national retail chain of men’s clothing stores. McCaskey is the matriarch of the Chicago Bears NFL team. Rabine is the CEO and founder of the Rabine Group, which is involved in asphalt and parking lot development. The people of Illinois deserves another option for governor, Ives contended. “We’re traveling the state to let people know that they have a real option in the governor’s race,” Ives told Rock Island Today. “They feel betrayed by both Gov. Rauner and the longtime political ruling class in Springfield. Places like Rock Island and like Decatur have become the forgotten places in Illinois by the Chicago Democrats who have run this state into the ground. This campaign is committed to helping every Illinoisan and their family succeed.” The campaign has previously visited Decatur, Rock Island County, the Quad Cities area, Troy, Glen Carbon and Springfield.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The editors of Crain’s Chicago Business are pulling the plug on our website’s comments section. Since we launched ChicagoBusiness.com more than 20 years ago, we have employed a variety of tools-most recently a discussion platform called Disqus-to facilitate reader commentary. Inevitably, however, the trolls leave their trails of slime before we know it. Simply put, we do not have the personnel to manage this commentary, to keep it civil and fair and to halt the back and forth before it devolves into invective, name-calling and, in too many cases, outright hate speech. We’d rather not play host to these often anonymous commenters. They drive out more civil readers and potential commenters. They sully our content, our brand and our sponsors. So, to borrow a phrase, we’re draining the swamp.)

Nevertheless, they did everything that they could to get rid of me. GAO audits IRS. They kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO. They gave me unfair performance expectations and unfair performance appraisals. They assigned me to work for, to work with, and to supervise the office’s most problematic employees. And even worse things.
