(FROM THE ARTICLE: A kerfuffle among conservative Republicans is raising some eyebrows around Illinois — in some ways echoing what Democrats say about the Illinois GOP. At issue are a series of provocative pieces published recently by Illinois Review, a longtime right-leaning commentator on the state of Illinois politics whose ownership recently changed hands. Last week, for instance, it raised questions about whether conservative megadonor Dick Uihlein is getting his money’s worth out of big contributions to a political action committee run by conservative operative and radio talk show host Dan Proft. Earlier, it called for the resignation of state GOP Chairman Don Tracy, saying the state party’s miserable showing in the November general election — including the defeat of Proft- and Uihlein-backed gubernatorial hopeful Darren Bailey — did not warrant Tracy’s retention. It also has reported that an investigation is underway into whether postal rules were broken when Tracy allowed the party establishment’s candidate for governor, Richard Irvin, to use its postal permit to lower costs for mailing campaign literature. Tracy urged Illinois Review to back off. “They do seem to be trying to divide the party,” Tracy said an interview. “They seem to be attacking more Republicans than Democrats.” Proft responded with some of his trademark snark but declined substantive comment. “Got another ‘bombshell’ there, do you, Greg?” he said in an email. “You go ahead and run with it.” Jeanne Ives, a Proft ally who also is mentioned in recent Illinois Review articles, also has a sharp “no comment” statement: “I don’t read their garbage,” she emailed. But Illinois Review Publisher Scott Kaspar said the new owners’ objectives are pretty clear. “Exposing corruption is sort of our main goal,” Kaspar said in an interview, because corruption is one of the reason the party has done poorly in recent cycles. “We need to clean up our house, so we can do better at the polls.” Kaspar pointed to the post about Proft, which suggested that one reason a slate of candidates backed by Proft for the Lyons Township High School District board fell short in the March election is Proft’s People Who Play By the Rules PAC reported spending just $3,725.56 on their behalf in a quarter in which his Starfish Consulting was paid $75,000 by the PAC and firms operated by associates another $67,000. “It struck us as odd that something like 38 times more money went to consultants rather than candidates,” Kaspar said, though he conceded that some of the group’s spending was not quite clear. That criticism — Uihlein’s money being wasted — is similar to comments political aides to incumbent Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker made after GOP gubernatorial hopeful Darren Bailey lost by double digits to Pritzker last November, despite millions of dollars of attack ads against him spent by Proft’s PAC using Uihlein donations. Another Illinois Review article blasted Tracy for recently saying that, like it or not, Illinois Republicans will have to start promoting the use of mail ballots if they hope to beat Democrats. Tracy didn’t talk about that until after November’s defeat, the article said, and didn’t mention that Illinois Democrats have allocated millions of dollars to implement such programs, while Illinois Republicans are operating on a “shoestring budget.” Another target of reporting by the publication is Orland Park Mayor Keith Pekau. Pekau defeated Kaspar in the GOP primary for the 6th District congressional race last year. The two repeatedly have clashed in various settings, but Kaspar denied he’s using Illinois Review for a personal feud. One of Tracy’s predecessors as Illinois GOP chair, Pat Brady, said that, up to a point, Illinois Review and its new owners “have a point. Proft has had horrible results,” spending at least $130 million in the past couple of years on races for governor, Illinois Supreme Court judgeships and other losers, he said. But overall, the story behind the story may be no more complicated that a new publication trying to attract an audience and make money by attacking the party establishment, Brady continued, noting that Donald Trump and others have gained by such moves. Kaspar responded that, “You have people who understand what we’re doing and people who have something to hide.” Illinois Review in November announced its change in ownership from co-founder Fran Eaton to a group including Kaspar and conservative radio host Mark Vargas, who is the site’s editor. The council race featured a crowded field. In an updated report from Positively Naperville, McBroom won with 13,162 votes and 11.97% of the electorate. Wilson, who had a 41-lead over Bansal, also won with 10,430 and 9.49% of the vote. Other endorsees, Bansal and Jaiswal, lost. The campaign featured controversy after Coyne and others called out Naperville council member Theresa Sullivan over the Naperville Forward mailer for misleading voters. Sullivan runs the Naper Forward PAC, which supports leftist politics.
