— President Obama and the discipline of optimism – Mary Schmich  (DIERSEN: What have you been erroneously optimistic about?  I was erroneously optimistic that my Democrat GAO superiors a) would let me work at least until my normal retirement age of 55 in 2003, but they forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, b) would promote me beyond GS-13, but they never did, c) would always assign me to audits of IRS, but they kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and d) would offer me a promotion to GS-13 if I would transfer to GAO from IRS in 1980, but they forced me to take an $18,459 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer.  I was erroneously optimistic that my Democrat IRS superiors a) would promote me beyond GS-12, but they never did, b) would not disallow my education deductions, but they did, and c) would not disallow my partial day per diem claims, but they did.  I was erroneously optimistic that my Democrat Post Office superiors a) would let me continue to work, but they forced me resign in 1969 and b) would not disallow my sick leave requests, but they did.  None of the aforesaid adverse actions would have been taken against me if I had been a Democrat, a minority, a female, or a veteran.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: At the bottom of the Daily Herald story (Jan. 5, 2016), find this commentary from Stan Zegel, Executive Director at Citizen Participation Institute in Winfield where he states a referendum would be binding. It appears the petitions are invoking a procedure established by state law 65 ILCS 5/7-1-16 whereby 250 electors in a municipality (a village or a city) can cause a referendum like this to be held. It is a binding referendum. It further appears that no such referendum is necessary in the acquiring municipality. That explains why no petitions have been circulated in Naperville. If the voters in a particular municipality vote against it, then it cannot be submitted again in that municipality until at least 22 months later, and then it will take it will take far more than 250 signatures to put it on the ballot again in that municipality. If it passes in any municipality, then that place automatically becomes part of Naperville. Any bonded indebtedness of an approving municipality, and of Naperville, get merged together and everyone shares in paying off the combined debt. Thus the taxpayers in Lisle, Woodridge, Warrenville (if the annexation is approved in their municipality) would take on a share of Naperville’s debt, and Naperville taxpayers would take on a share the other places’ debt. It follows that, with everything then part of Naperville, Naperville’s ordinances are in effect throughout the combined area, and everyone can then elect the mayor and members of the Naperville City Council as their terms come up in 2019 and after.)

Its only real juice comes from the power to embarrass, to shame unethical members of the U.S. House (and deter future ethical lapses) by investigating allegations of corruption and submitting reports to the chronically worthless House Ethics Committee. It’s a power that former U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minnesota, decried back in 2008 when the office was created. Bachmann, through a spokesman, predicted that the OCE would prolong “the game of gotcha politics” and create an “unaccountable board of gossips and partisans that can sling mud.” It’s a power that motivated House Republicans — in a closed-door Monday vote — to approve a rules package that would have gutted the OCE, before they reversed course in the face of a public backlash. Bachmann saw negatives in all the positive aspects of the OCE. The office’s best virtue — that it’s independent of Congress — made it “unaccountable” in her eyes. Its willingness to dig into complaints the House Ethics Committee sweeps under the rug made it a “board of gossips.” Bachmann ultimately found herself on the receiving end of an OCE investigation into issues related to her 2012 presidential campaign, including the use of campaign funds to promote her autobiography and the improper mixing of funds between her campaign and her political action committee. The OCE referred the matter to the House Ethics Committee, which dragged its feet for a year, allowing Bachmann to leave office with no repercussions. You could argue, however, that the ongoing embarrassment of the ethics probe persuaded Bachmann to not seek re-election. The political shorthand on the OCE is that it’s a Democratic creation despised by Republicans. There’s some truth in that, because 159 Republicans — compared to only 23 Democrats — voted against its formation in 2008. But the bigger truth is that House members, regardless of party, have viewed the six-member panel largely through the prism of their own experiences with it.)

Barack Obama took office, and race immediately became a focal point in a way that was unprecedented in American history. No matter his accomplishments, he seemed destined to be remembered foremost as the first black man to lead the world’s most powerful nation. But eight years later, Obama’s racial legacy is as complicated as the president himself. To many, his election was a step toward realizing the dream of a post-racial society. He was dubbed the Jackie Robinson of politics. African-Americans, along with Latinos and Asians, voted for him in record numbers in 2008, flush with expectations that he’d deliver on hope and change for people of color. In a span of a few weeks after the election, the Times confirmed it had about 132,000 paid print and digital subscriptions while the Journal reported it saw a 300 percent increase in new subscribers a day after Trump was elected. Publishers should take this news as an encouraging sign that the public does want accurate and truthful reporting. Newspapers remain an important and powerful brand, and they should be the solution for fake news. Let’s not forget that before social media and algorithms dictated to us what was considered news, newspapers were our source of information. Despite many journalists operating with leaner newsrooms and resources, they still put in the same time and energy while covering this election.
