(FROM THE ARTICLE: Two adjoining mansions located at the end of a long, private lane in Wheaton — and that were built at the same time — are on the market for $2.4 million and $3.3 million. The two homes, located immediately west of the Chicago Golf Club, occupy historic ground. Together, they sit on the 3.4-acre site that once held a rambling mansion called Overlinks, which had been designed by architect Jarvis Hunt and built in 1897 for Chicago Golf Club member and influential Chicago Board of Trade member Edward S. Worthington. Overlinks was demolished around 1990, and soon afterward, longtime homebuilder Harold “Mac” Airhart, who died on April 16 at age 86, subdivided the land and constructed the two mansions, one of which became Airhart’s own personal home. Airhart, a Wheaton College alumnus and a longtime Wheaton College trustee, in 1964 founded Airhart Construction, which now has constructed more than 1,800 homes. Even before Airhart’s passing, he and his wife, Vonla, had one of the two homes, their own, five-bedroom, 5,794-square-foot Georgian-style home, on the market. It’s available for $2.4 million. Situated on 1.61 acres, the Airhart mansion has 4 1/2 bathrooms, a grand foyer, soaring ceilings, millwork, a great room with a fireplace, an adjacent octagon-shaped sunroom with floor-to-ceiling windows, a library with custom built-ins and architectural molding and a kitchen with granite countertops, newer appliances and two pantries. Other features include a primary bedroom suite with a walk-in wardrobe and a finished walkout lower level. Outside on the property are hosta beds, mature trees, a three-car garage and a 60-foot-by-60-foot motor court. “This is a fabulous house and 1.6-acre lot,” listing agent Pattie Murray of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices told Elite Street. “It has such grandeur. I think it is one of the most iconic, beautiful places near Chicago Golf.” The Airhart house currently is listed in an agents-only private listing network. Airhart and his wife, Vonla, who spent winters in Naples, Florida, previously had listed the house for $2.35 million from 2011 until 2013, when they cut their asking price to just under $2.3 million. They took the home off the market later that year. Also for sale in an agents-only private listing network is the five-bedroom, 6,504-square-foot mansion immediately to the east. Listed on Tuesday for $3.3 million and known as Grey Walls, the home was constructed by Airhart’s firm and designed by Chicago architect Richard Hague. Its first owner, former Amoco CEO H. Laurance Fuller, owned the mansion from its completion in 1992 until 2004, when he sold it to spend more time at homes in South Carolina and Massachusetts. The mansion was inspired by — and takes its name from — Greywalls, the onetime country house on Scotland’s east coast that borders the Muirfield golf links there and now functions as a hotel. With 10,000 square feet of total space including the lower level, the Grey Walls mansion in Wheaton has five full bathrooms, two half bathrooms, two fireplaces, a dual stair entry, an oversize dining room, a mahogany library with custom built-ins and a limestone fireplace, a great room with a coffered ceiling, a sunroom and a kitchen with hand-crafted William Huber cabinetry, granite countertops, Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances and a walk-in pantry. The mansion’s main-level primary bedroom suite has 11-foot ceilings, dual vanities and custom walk-in closets. Outside on the 1.77-acre property are bluestone patios and limestone terraces that overlook the Chicago Golf Club. The grounds were landscaped by the late Morton Arboretum landscape architect Tony Tyznik. “The location is spectacular, and this home is for somebody who appreciates architecture and who appreciates the Scottish and really European flair to the home,” listing agent Michael LaFido of LPT Realty told Elite Street. “It is really special. I think anybody who would come over as a guest and entertain would be like, ‘That’s a cool house.’” The Airhart house had a $34,704 property tax bill in the 2025 tax year, while Grey Walls had a $45,988 property tax bill in the 2025 tax year.)

Officers who underperformed early would fall behind their peers, and eventually be forced into retirement. But Battalion 601 offered a detour around that meritocracy: Low performers could transfer into the secret police, spend a few years earning promotions there and then return to the regular army, often leapfrogging over peers who had stayed with the regular forces. Men who took the detour ended up with longer careers, higher salaries and better pensions than similar individuals who stayed in the mainstream military units. The worse an officer’s academic record had been at the military academy, the more likely he was to join Battalion 601. And once inside, the lowest performers were assigned to the most brutal units, carrying out the day-to-day tasks of torture and murder, work that was so morally repugnant that it carried a serious risk of both social stigma and psychological trauma. That day, “Crete-Monee High School had multiple fights occur which resulted in a chaotic, dangerous environment. This played out on social media, with videos being shared and causing community uproar and disharmony,” Pieritz said in the release. He said the 20 juveniles would be petitioned for “crimes including disorderly conduct, battery, and mob action.” Pieritz said recent “teen takeover” occurrences showed it was important to arrest and prosecute juvenile offenders in similar incidents. Most recently, one such gathering in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood over Memorial Day weekend led to dozens of arrests and a shooting that wounded three, according to Chicago police. “We have all seen the “teen takeover” mobs occurring around the country,” Pieritz said. “We cannot and will not allow that mentality to take root in our town.” Pieritz also released a letter addressed to the Will County state’s attorney’s office, urging that charges be filed due to the severity of the May 12 chaos. “I find it necessary to write this letter due to the seriousness of this incident, the public safety concern for all students and staff of the Crete-Monee High School, a deterrent against future violent and disruptive acts, and for the retention of public confidence in the police department restoring order in the school,” Pieritz wrote to the state’s attorney’s office. A security guard was injured and went to the hospital, Pieritz said, and misinformation was spread widely on social media, including claims that weapons were present and that a student had been thrown over a balcony. “This caused a frenzy of responses on social media including those questioning the safety of students in Crete schools, disparaging remarks about the school administration, village of Crete, and police department,” Pieritz said. The state’s attorney’s office said in a statement that the case is currently being processed, and that it has not yet received materials for review. “We have a strong and longstanding working relationship with the Village of Crete Department of Police and Chief Pieritz,” the state’s attorney’s office said in its statement. “As with any case, we will conduct an independent review of the facts, evidence, and applicable law once the matter is formally presented to us.” It would be inappropriate to comment further until that review is complete, the state’s attorney’s office said. Of these, nearly 2,000 have federal pensions that pay $125,000 or more annually, and 151 take home $150,000 or more. Six federal retirees get more than $200,000 a year. Some 1.2% of federal retirees collect six-figure pensions. By comparison, 0.1% of military retirees collect as much.
