— It was to be a “rollout of major endorsements,” according to an advisory sent out by the campaign of Jeanne Ives, the three-term Wheaton lawmaker challenging Gov. Rauner in the Republican primary. But when a reporter arrived at the Union League Club of Chicago for the scheduled 1:30 p.m. event, a person at the front desk said the Ives news conference had already occurred — at 11:30 a.m. The Ives campaign apologized for the mistake and released video of the endorsers as well as the candidate. For the record, Ives picked up the backing of Republican state Reps. Peter Breen of Lombard, Allen Skillicorn of East Dundee, Tom Morrison of Palatine and Margo McDermed of Mokena. She already had the support of Reps. David McSweeney of Barrington Hills and Barb Wheeler of Crystal Lake, along with state Sens. Kyle McCarter of Lebanon and Tim Bivins of Dixon. – Rick Pearson

This micro-elite controls over $7.6 trillion, an increase of 18 percent from 2016. A billionaire’s spending power is difficult to grasp, both because most people do not correctly intuit large numbers, and because a billion dollars far outstrips most people’s experience. What does a household budget look like to a billionaire? To find out, let’s scale down a billionaire’s income to $50,000, the median American income, adjusting budget items proportionally.)

— Flatlanders of Illinois shouldn’t rush to get a Rocky Mountain high – Editorial (DIERSEN: If you promote pot, you promote destruction.)
http://www.bnd.com/opinion/editorials/article196449134.html
(FROM THE EDITORIAL: “We also support legalizing small amounts of marijuana, which could bring in a few billions of dollars,” Democratic candidate Tio Hardiman told the Sun-Times. He’s blowing smoke. Billions in taxes only come with bales of pot. Republicans see a problem. Incumbent Gov. Bruce Rauner said Illinois should wait and see the impacts in Colorado and California, allowing them to experiment on their people, especially their youth, before we subject ours to recreational marijuana use. His March 20 primary opponent, state Rep. Jeanne Ives, said impacts are already evident — literally. She cited the 48 percent boost in Colorado’s marijuana-related traffic deaths and boost in youth use of the drug. Not to mention, until the U.S. Congress changes federal law on marijuana, no state should be in the business of making it legal. It is one thing to decide the priority we place and resources we use on crimes related to marijuana. It is another to be so irresponsible, undisciplined and unimaginative about your state’s fiscal salvation that the only path you can see is taxation and proliferation of weed, especially without knowing how many lives you will lose or ruin.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Congress’s use of repeated continuing resolutions rather than a full budget authorization to fund the government damages the Congressional Budget Office’s ability to effectively produce reports, director Keith Hall told members of the Senate Budget Committee on Wednesday. “It does make things harder. We’ve actually put off some things that we weren’t intending to put off, some computer work and some things like that,” said Hall. “If we continue under a CR, right now we’ll have to curtail our hiring, we’ll have to move down a few slots, we’ll have to cancel some training and travel. So it does have a consequence for us. It does degrade our performance.” The stall in hiring is particularly damaging to CBO performance, as Hall testified that the current staff already struggles to meet the requests made by committees and congressmen.)

(THE LETTER: I was beyond shocked and appalled when I saw the letter to the editor in the Jan. 16 edition of the SJ-R from the pastor of the Abraham Lincoln UU Congregation in Springfield about Welcoming Cities. He has got to be kidding. I cannot believe in this day and age a pastor would tell the city of Springfield to adopt a Welcoming City resolution. Hasn’t he ever heard about separation of church and state? If he wants to welcome these people, then his congregation should pass the offering basket and open their homes to feed the illegal aliens and house the refugees. They should not expect taxpayers to foot the bill. We at Save Springfield, Illinois Facebook Group agree with what has been expressed already: The anti-hate resolution is in place and is enough. Let the aldermen get busy with the taxpayers’ concerns.)

IVES FOR GOVERNOR
— Republican State Legislators Announce Ives Is Their Choice for Governor
http://mailchi.mp/976b6c93da87/republican-state-legislators-announce-ives-is-their-choice-for-governor
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Yet this morning, State Representatives Tom Morrison (R-Palatine), Peter Breen (R-Lombard), Margo McDermed (R-Frankfort), and Allen Skillicorn (R-East Dundee), along with Cook County Board of Review Commissioner Dan Patlak, Naperville Township Commissioner Warren Dixon, and Wheatland Township Trustee Raquel Mitchell joined Ives in a press conference to announce their support for the GOP challenger. State Sens. Kyle McCarter (R-Vandalia) and Tim Bivins (R-Dixon), along with State Representatives David McSweeney (R-Cary) and Barb Wheeler (R-Crystal Lake) have additionally pledged their support for Ives. The endorsement comes as many party members are rallying behind State Representative, West Point Graduate and Army Veteran Jeanne Ives ahead of the March 20 primary. Ives adds the support of her legislative colleagues to a growing list, including Northwest Side GOP Club, Wheatland Township Republican Organization, Fremont Township Republican Organization, Republican Organization of Wheeling Township, Chicago GOP, Batavia Township Republican Organization, Wauconda Township Republican Organization, Republican Assembly of Lake County, and Tax Accountability (Taxpayers United of America).)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Is a fair immigration compromise possible out of failed Schumer shutdown? – John Kass
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/columnists/kass/ct-met-shutdown-immigration-kass-0124-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Dreamers are in limbo through no fault of their own, trapped between two cultures, with no place of their own to legally call home. Yet opinion polls show that much of the America public is sympathetic to their plight. So let the Dreamers stay. Those who are in criminal gangs or have violent criminal records have no right to be here. But the others, sure, why not? It would be quite easy to protect the Dreamers and their parents, except for the politics. Democrats want them as votes. Republicans are worried this could tip elections. So why not take the politics out of it? Here’s a possibility to consider: Let Dreamers stay — given permanent work and resident status — but not citizenship and voting rights. Conferring something as precious as citizenship upon people as a reward for their parents’ breaking the law isn’t the right way to go about this. If they want to become American citizens and vote, they’d be free to leave and attempt to re-enter the country as legal immigrants. If protecting Dreamers is the issue, then you’ll agree with me. But if weaponizing the Dreamers for the next election is your plan, then you won’t. And what about their parents, who crossed the border illegally and who worry about being deported? We can protect them, too, with some reasonable amnesty. Why not give them permanent work status, like green cards? But no welfare. Yes, you read that correctly.)

— Illinois Lawmakers Explore Tax Workaround – Cole Lauterbach (DIERSEN: Why not just cap real estate taxes at $10,000 per home?)
http://www.altondailynews.com/news/details.cfm?clientid=17&id=258980#.WmhmRIzR-M8
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Rather than working to lower one of the nation’s highest property tax burdens, some Illinois lawmakers want to sidestep the federal tax reform bill by allowing for donations to government. One bill would create the Illinois Excellence Fund. It would allow taxpayers to donate and receive a tax credit for the exact amount. This shuffling of money back and forth would allow a taxpayer to deduct that amount on their federal taxes, effectively thwarting the $10,000 cap on state and local tax deductions put in place by the tax reform bill passed last month. The state treasurer can then use that money as he sees fit. “[The SALT deduction cap] sort of came out of nowhere,” said state Rep. Jonathan Carroll, D-Northbrook. “This is trying to offer a solution to give tax relief to the middle class.” The bill has a populist tone, appealing to the cries of high property taxes across the state. Nearly all of the current sponsors of the bill are likely to face a challenging re-election effort this November. Carroll said he expects the Internal Revenue Service would object to such a law. “They’re not likely to take it lying down,” he said. The IRS classifies a charitable donation as “voluntary and is made without getting, or expecting to get, anything of equal value.” Being a federal tax deduction as well, the state-bound donation would actually turn into a money maker. In addition to a 100 percent credit from the state, the donor would get up to 37 percent of that donation back in a federal write off. The bill would also allow a county to set up a similar charity, which could cause different issues. Local taxes are devised in reverse compared to state and federal taxes. A taxing district sets percentages based on a target revenue number and then properties are taxed at that percentage of the assessed value of their homes. State Rep. Steven Reick, R-Woodstock, said in an online post that the sponsors would tell counties that “they can set up a fund to accept donations to be used for undefined charitable purposes in exchange for a reduction or elimination of your property tax bill, which will either raise taxes on everybody else or destroy the budgets of every school district and taxing body in the County.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Pollak questioned Marshall’s prediction of future voting trends among Hispanics. Americans originally from Mexico and Central America do not typically transition toward support for conservatism or the Republican Party, he said. . .Pollak challenged narratives framing DACA recipients as wholly Americanized, noting DACA-amnesty movement’s expression of hostility toward America and alignment with Mexican nationalism. “I’m again asking, for people who want to do something for DACA beneficiaries, for people who say that they’re Americans, why can’t they find a public face to this movement who at least appeals to Republicans or conservatives?” asked Pollak. “I’ve got to tell you, I was open to the idea of this DACA thing until I started covering some of these demonstrations, and you see the Mexican flag, and you see the hostility toward Republicans, the hostility toward America; and you ask yourself, ‘We’re being told these are just like other Americans, but they’re so radical, or at least they’re being led by radicals, why would we want them as fellow citizens?’ They don’t seem to be want to be part of a broader American community. They want to change that community. I mean, I think it’s a serious problem for anybody who wants to legalize 700,000 or 800,000 DACA recipients. . .Asked to address the concerns of parents whose children has been killed or murdered by illegal aliens, Marshall broadly called for more effective deportation measures to remove illegal aliens who “commit crimes.”)

PUBLIUS FORUM
— You Can’t Be Both a Liberal AND an American at the Same Time – Warner Todd Huston
http://www.publiusforum.com/2018/01/23/cant-liberal-american-time/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Liberals live in America, but they don’t love America. So, it’s not a surprise that they have an affinity for law breaking illegal aliens. After all, liberals don’t care about our laws or our sovereignty any more than transient illegals who come to the U.S. only to use it for its freebies and welfare, or to get a job to make a quick dollar to send back to their home country. These transient illegals don’t have any more interest in being an American than liberals do. So, when liberals fight for illegals, understand that they are doing so not out of love, but hate. Indeed, the modern Democrat Party is the biggest hate group in American history. Today’s liberals are all about hate. They hate democracy, they hate the Constitution, they hate white people, they hate capitalism, they hate democracy, they hate republican government, they hate religion, they hate the family structure, they hate guns, they hate history, they hate freedom of speech and liberty… in short they hate everything about the U.S.A. and you can’t love a place that you hate so thoroughly. In fact, the only thing they love about America is their assumption that they can “do whatever they want,” a concept they treat with licentiousness and wanton instead of the virtue and probity the founders hoped Americans would observe. It might seem a natural progression, this party now having drifted to its logical extremes. Born of a hate for the equality of negroes, the Democrat Party morphed into a party that hates America itself as the nation struggled with the post Civil War reconstruction era.)

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/powerpost/wp/2018/01/24/new-cost-controls-sought-in-federal-employee-health-care-program/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Almost all federal employees and retirees are eligible for coverage under the FEHBP, the largest employer-sponsored health-insurance program in the country. The program has about 4 million enrollees, approximately the same number of covered spouses and children up to age 26, and about 260 participating plans — a dozen available nationally and the rest only regionally. The government pays about 70 percent of a plan’s total premium cost on average. The enrollee share of premiums has increased about 6 to 7 percent annually in recent years, about in line with other large employer-sponsored health plans.)

— What Does It Mean To Be A ‘Trump Supporter’? – David Marcus (DIERSEN: I should write a book about those in Illinois, in DuPage County, in Milton Township, in Glen Ellyn, Wheaton, and in my precinct who hate Trump and hate his supporters. In addition to being anti-Trump, they are anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-patriotic, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, anti-German Americans, anti-draft avoiders (except Bill Clinton), and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors.)
http://thefederalist.com/2018/01/23/what-does-it-mean-to-support-trump/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: “Do you support Trump?” It is one of the most loaded and divisive questions that can be asked in America today. But what does it mean? What does a yes or no tell us about the people being asked? Does it tell us anything about their views, policy preferences, hopes for the country? With Trump’s reelection campaign two years away, is it essentially a moot question? Is it akin to asking if you support the Astros as World Series champions when, after all, until next October, what difference does it make? Typically, in cases of presidents so far from a reelection bid, we think in terms of approval, not support. There is a subtle but vital difference between the two concepts. What we approve or disapprove of is job performance, not the person. What we support, on the other hand, is the person, not the policies or accomplishments.)

In 1987, my Democrat GAO superiors got rid of my mentor who had hired me in 1980, got me assigned to audits of IRS in 1986, and promoted me in 1986. The report says that Director Wray objected to the order and told the president that if McCabe were fired, he’d retire as well. Since the administration was already under fire for jettisoning James Comey from the FBI, the report explains, Trump backed down from his order.)

But now that a deal has been reached, he said, “today just feels like one of the lesser holidays, like Columbus Day.” The analyst, who requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak with the press, said he and his wife spent the afternoon at Costco, stocking up on toilet paper, eggs, and milk. Roskam represents me. In Springfield, who represents those in your county, in your township/ward, and in your municipality who pay more than $10,000 a year in real estate and state income taxes? For me, it is Bruce Rauner, Evelyn Sanguinetti, Mike Connelly, and Jeanne Ives. In addition to the aforesaid, Morthland, Harold, Grasso, Minor, Grant, and Byrne want to represent me in Springfield.)
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/18/nyregion/cuomo-trump-payroll-tax-income.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: If taxpayers and lawmakers were expecting that a new 37-page report would provide a definitive road map of how New York State might sidestep the effects of President Trump’s new federal tax plan and its sharp reduction in the deductibility of state and local taxes, they instead got a view of just how complicated this is. The report, released this week, laid out at least a half-dozen ways New York could rewrite its tax code, with no indication of which option legislators might pursue. There was a potpourri of progressive rates, wage credits and tax-withholding schemes, with officials cautioning that all the options would require further study. No bills have been drafted. The possibilities included completely replacing the state income tax with an employer-side payroll tax; introducing a new progressive payroll tax in addition to the existing income tax, with tax credits to make up the difference; or designing a payroll tax only for wage earners above a certain income threshold — the taxpayers most likely to be hurt by the federal tax plan in the first place. Some versions would be mandatory. Others would be opt-in.)

An Unwelcome Tax Surprise Could Soon Lurk in Your Paycheck
— Workers’ withholding may no longer reflect what is owed for the current year or anticipated refunds – Laura Saunders (DIERSEN: From what I see, outrageously, the less federal income tax that you have paid in the past because you have itemized your deductions, the more federal income tax that you will pay in the future. I itemized my deductions 1972-1977 and my wife and I have itemized our deductions since we got married in 1978.)
https://www.wsj.com/articles/an-unwelcome-tax-surprise-could-soon-lurk-in-your-paycheck-1516363200
(FROM THE ARTICLE: According to Treasury officials, the new withholding tables have been adjusted to reflect the larger standard deduction, lower tax rates, and the repeal of the personal exemption. But the tables couldn’t take into account changes that affect individuals differently. So they don’t include the shrinking alternative-minimum tax, the expanded child credit, or the repeal of deductions for state and local taxes. . .Or, say that Mike owes high federal and state taxes that he will no longer be able to deduct, other than $10,000. But his W-4 form on file with his employer reflects his ability to take these deductions in prior years. As a result, Mike might be under-withheld for tax year 2018. . .Many agree that taxpayers at high risk of being under-withheld are those with large itemized deductions that have been repealed or limited. These include write-offs for state and local taxes and miscellaneous expenses, such as those not reimbursed by an employer.)

http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2018/01/19/blue-state-blues-whats-behind-coming-democratic-surge/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: With Democrats surging, talk of insurgency in Republican primaries has faded — especially after Roy Moore’s defeat in Alabama. People feel less inclined to stoke internal fights when the general election is in doubt. There are exceptions, where the incumbent Republican is likely to win — or to lose. An example of the latter is in Illinois, where Governor Bruce Rauner buckled on taxes and abortion. He faces a primary challenge from a solid — but long-shot — candidate, State Senator Jeanne Ives. Regardless, Republicans are in trouble. The party’s message for 2018 will be less about the achievements of the past two years, and more about preventing Trump’s impeachment and keeping the Speaker’s gavel out of Nancy Pelosi’s hands.)

NPR ILLINOIS
— A Call For Transparency – CHARLES N. WHEELER III
http://nprillinois.org/post/call-transparency#stream/0
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The intent of disclosure, of course, is to alert voters to economic interests that could pose a conflict as a public official carries out his or her duties. But identifying such conflicts “is a huge gray area” under the current rules, says Sarah Brune, the campaign’s executive director, because the filings are so vague. What’s needed, she says, is more detailed disclosure, so that the media and the public understands what someone’s interests are. Specific changes the campaign is proposing include requiring filers to disclose the names of businesses and investments with ties to the individual, along with the degree of ownership and the actual income received. Also, professionals should be required to provide the names of individual clients from whom they’ve received more than $5,000, unless barred by confidentiality rules, rather than simply the types of services provided and the nature of the businesses served. As a hypothetical, Brune notes a candidate now can report simply getting more than $5,000 for professional services on behalf of an energy company, when in fact the individual might have been paid $500,000 by Exelon.)

GOVERNING
— The 6 Most Dysfunctional States Then and Now In 2009, Louis Jacobson ranked the states with the worst leadership and policy challenges. Almost a decade later, what’s changed? – LOUIS JACOBSON
http://www.governing.com/topics/politics/gov-six-most-dysfunctional-states.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The only state from the 2009 list that has remained in serious trouble is Illinois. Gov. Bruce Rauner hasn’t committed any serious ethics violations. Rather, the problem has been relentless gridlock between Rauner, a Republican, and the Democratic-controlled legislature. In fact, Illinois’ situation may actually have worsened in some ways since 2009. The state went without a full budget for more than two years, and it remains in fiscal trouble, with over $15 billion in unpaid bills and a massive unfunded pension liability. “This has made everything significantly worse — fiscal, social, economic and civic trust, [as well as] confidence and engagement,” says Kent Redfield, an emeritus professor at the University of Illinois at Springfield. All of this has all occurred at a time when Illinois’ policy challenges have grown, Redfield adds. These include “a weak, narrow revenue structure and insufficient tax rates, overspending and lack of priorities, a negative business climate, declining population, fiscal stresses for higher education, an aging state workforce, deteriorating infrastructure, state and local pension debt, and ineffective public service delivery at the state and local level,” he says. The one silver lining for Illinois is that the two sides did manage to enact a compromise budget last year — a significant, if belated, step forward. Still, Illinois would be a clear candidate for a new list of the nation’s most dysfunctional states. What other states might contend for this dubious honor?)

ROLL CALL
— Illinois House Primaries Will Be Early Testing Ground for Democrats  Democrats have several pickup opportunities, but they need viable candidates first – Simone Pathé
https://www.rollcall.com/news/politics/illinois-house-primaries-democrats
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Based on 2016 presidential performance, the 6th District looks like Democrats’ best pickup opportunity. Inside Elections with Nathan L. Gonzales rates the race Likely Republican. “It’s one of those districts where we have to perform; it’s a part of our path,” a national Democratic strategist said. Out of the four Illinois seats on the DCCC’s target list, it’s the only one Clinton carried — by 7 points. But voters in this affluent suburban Chicago district also backed incumbent Republican Sen. Mark S. Kirk, who lost statewide, and easily gave Rep. Peter Roskam a sixth term. Democrats plan to hit Roskam on the GOP tax overhaul, which the state’s Republican governor called “punishing” because of its cap on state and local tax deductions. “It’s clear that [Roskam’s] voters wanted a conservative representative who was focused on cutting their taxes — and that’s exactly what Roskam did,” Maddie Anderson, a spokeswoman for the National Republican Congressional Committee, said in an email. “I’m a little confused by the notion that following through on what voters asked for would lead to being voted out of office,” she added. Seven Democrats have filed the requisite signatures to run in the primary, including 2016 nominee Amanda Howland, who lost to Roskam by 18 points. But the DCCC is not in a position to back any of the other candidates because members of the Illinois delegation are split. Many national Democrats see Kelly Mazeski, a former financial adviser and local elected official, as the front-runner. The breast cancer survivor announced her candidacy the day the House voted to repeal the 2010 health care law, which earned her national attention. She raised $163,000 in the fourth quarter of 2017 and loaned herself another $100,000. She ended December with $510,000 in the bank. In addition to support from EMILY’s List, she has endorsements from Illinois Reps. Jan Schakowsky and Cheri Bustos and several of Bustos’ closest female allies in Congress, who have been politically active across the country. But some members of the delegation prefer lawyer Carole Cheney, a former district chief of staff to Rep. Bill Foster. She has the backing of Foster and Rep. Robin Kelly. She had $90,000 at the end of the third quarter.)

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/powerpost/wp/2018/01/16/trumps-disruption-of-government-could-aid-top-federal-employees-survey-says/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: With President Trump’s first presidential anniversary days away, hundreds of political positions in the federal government still lack nominees. Perhaps some folks don’t want to work for a white supremacist, but that’s another column. While the lack of political appointees can cause myriad problems, there also can be an upside for career staffers — like the opportunity for them to disrupt, which is not the same as resist. In fact, Trump campaigned and has governed with disruption of the established order as a primary goal. A new survey on “Navigating Disruption” sought to determine if government leaders “are being inducted into a new phase of government service, with disruption as its key operating principle.” Think of disruption as bold action upsetting the status quo. That can be good or bad. The survey, conducted by the Association of Government Accountants (AGA) and the Grant Thornton accounting firm, focused on federal chief financial officers (CFOs), but the findings also are relevant to other career government leaders.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Now high-income folks who pay the bills for big government in California, Illinois and New York will be even more motivated to decamp for Nevada, Florida or Texas. If they leave, a dwindling group of productive workers will be left to shoulder a rising financial burden. . .Illinois is $361 billion in the hole on state pensions. (That figure doesn’t include Chicago’s $90 billion shortfall.) If Illinois asked workers in the private sector and the federal government to make up the state’s deficit, each maker would have to chip in $68,000. NBC5
— Chris Kennedy Walks Off Stage During Gun Violence Comment at Forum “It hit a very special nerve for me,” Kennedy said in an interview with NBC5 – Mary Ann Ahern and Brendan Pedersen (DIERSEN: Republicans promote the traditional family. Democrats promote things that destroy the traditional family. Children raised in traditional families are far less likely to commit crime and they are far more likely to be successful in life.)
https://www.nbcchicago.com/blogs/ward-room/chris-kennedy-leaves-stage-during-forum-469429893.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Gubernatorial candidate Chris Kennedy left the stage during a forum on Monday after Republican State Rep. Jeanne Ives argued the solution to the state’s gun violence was having “more fathers in the home.” Kennedy, a Democrat, replied by pointing out he had grown up without a father before standing up and walking out of the venue. For the Winnetka businessman and politician, gun violence is personal. Both his father and uncle – Sen. Robert Kennedy (D) and President John F. Kennedy (D), respectively – were shot and killed during the turbulent 1960s. Kennedy has made gun violence a top priority of his campaign since he declared his candidacy last February, earning endorsements from African-American Congressmen Bobby Rush and Danny Davis in the process. “It hit a very special nerve for me,” Kennedy said in an interview with NBC 5. “I lost my father to someone with a gun. For someone to say simply the solution is to have a father-in-law – I don’t know. How shall I react? What should my family have done?” Kathleen Murphy, a spokesperson for Ives, said in a statement Monday night that the representative did not mean to offend Mr. Kennedy during the forum. However, Murphy also reiterated the importance of fathers in domestic life, citing “similar statements” like President Barack Obama’s 2008 Father’s Day speech at the Apostolic Church of God on Chicago’s South Side. In his speech, the then-candidate said, “too many fathers also are is missing — missing from too many lives and too many homes.” “Those are President Obama’s words, and that was what she was echoing today,” Murphy said. “She certainly meant no offense to Mr. Kennedy.” Kennedy made the decision to leave after watching the 2016 Republican primary debates, where he said, “the Republican Party allowed Donald Trump to say racist and simplistic things.” Kennedy argued that Republicans should have vacated the stage in protest like he did when he heard “simplistic solutions to tragic problems.” Kennedy’s running mate, Ra Joy, has also been personally stricken by gun violence. His son Xavier was killed by gunfire in Hyde Park last June. After returning home from college for the summer, his family believes he was killed for his cell phone just two blocks from his home. Kennedy quoted his running mate when it came to tackling violence. “As Ra points out, hurt people hurt people,” he said. “We need to be sensitive to that; think in terms of empathy and not in terms of punishment, and that’s not what I was hearing today.”)

The proposal from Rep. David McSweeney, R-Barrington Hills, comes as elected officials and prominent figures nationwide face heightened scrutiny amid a flood of sexual misconduct allegations. In Illinois, state Sen. Ira Silverstein, D-Chicago, has been accused of sexually harassing a victims rights advocate while working with the woman to pass legislation. Silverstein denied the allegations, which brought to light flaws in the way ethics complaints are handled at the Capitol as the office charged with investigating allegations sat empty for three years. The measure pushed by McSweeney would require local government agencies, including schools and community colleges, to disclose within three days details of severance agreements whenever any workers are fired over alleged sexual harassment or discrimination. A related proposal he also introduced late last week would prevent taxpayer dollars from being used to pay off legal settlements resulting from a state lawmaker’s sexual misconduct.)

Political parties exist to help elect candidates who can and will defend and advance their platform. Trump’s critics reject the immigration planks in the Republican Party platform and in the Illinois Republican Party platform. What does Roskam say to those like me who support the immigration planks in the Republican Party platform and in the Illinois Republican Party platform? From what I see, ever-increasingly, employers prefer to hire recent immigrants over those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time. Overwhelmingly, recent immigrants are young minorities and/or young females who talk and act like Democrats. GAO hired me in 1980 because it could not find a qualified Democrat, minority, female, younger person, or veteran who would take the job. IRS hired me in 1971 because it could not find a qualified Democrat, minority, female, or veteran who would take the job. The Post Office hired me in 1966 because it could not find a qualified Democrat, minority, female, or veteran who would take the job. Ever-increasingly, Democrats oppose anything that is merit based. My Democrat IRS superiors were furious when I passed the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979 when I was 30 years old. My Democrat GAO superiors were furious when I passed the Certified Internal Auditor examination on my first attempt in 1981 when I was 32 years old. (FROM THE ARTICLE: “We know the statistics — that children who grow up without a father are five times more likely to live in poverty and commit crime; nine times more likely to drop out of schools and 20 times more likely to end up in prison.” That was Senator Barack Obama in 2008. “You know how you’re going to solve [gun violence]? Fathers in the home.” That was Jeanne Ives, candidate for governor, at a forum today. This time, the audience booed and shouted. Chris Kennedy walked off the stage and said, “When I hear such ignorance and stupidity aired out by someone who knows so little about so much, I don’t think there’s an appropriate place for them to be on a podium on a dais.” Mayor Emanuel last year proudly attributed a historic low in teen births to the City’s work and to Obamacare. The federal government, under Obama and long before, linked unwed births to crime. Ives made her comment to a crowd she knew would be hostile — mostly Democratic on the west side of Chicago. Over the booing she repeated what she believes, “Fathers in the home.” Seeing that, instead of joining the jeering hypocrisy, maybe Kennedy should have remembered something his father said: “Few men are willing to brave the disapproval of their fellows, the censure of their colleagues, the wrath of their society. Moral courage is a rarer commodity than bravery in battle or great intelligence. Yet it is the one essential, vital quality for those who seek to change a world which yields most painfully to change.”)

— Republicans, do you want a race-based immigration system, too? – Eugene Robinson (DIERSEN: Ever-increasingly, Democrats oppose anything that is merit based. My Democrat IRS superiors were furious when I passed the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979 when I was 30 years old. My Democrat GAO superiors were furious when I passed the Certified Internal Auditor examination on my first attempt in 1981 when I was 32 years old. The young Democrat minorities and the young Democrat females who my Democrat IRS and GAO superiors promoted over me had not taken those examinations, let alone passed them.)

SAN DIEGO UNION TRIBUNE
— Libel laws: What are they and why is Trump talking about them, again? – Luis Gomez (DIERSEN: According to this article, “Publicly elected officials have a higher bar to meet because, unlike private citizens, statements made about them are probably a matter of public importance. Public officials like Trump, still, have recourse when they can prove “actual malice” or that the falsehoods made were done recklessly or maliciously.” My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes routinely slander and libel me because they believe that they can get away with it because I have to meet a “higher bar” to prove slander and libel a) because I have been the GOPUSA Editor since 2000 and b) because I have been an elected Republican Precinct Committeeman since 2000. Further, they know that because of my demographics, I have terrible “jury appeal.” Ever-increasingly, juries are anti-Trump, anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-patriotic, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, anti-German Americans, and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors.)
http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/opinion/the-conversation/sd-what-are-libel-laws-and-why-trump-talking-about-them-20180110-htmlstory.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: So, what are libel laws? Here’s how the American Lawyer Media defines libel: “to publish in print (including pictures), writing or broadcast through radio, television or film, an untruth about another which will do harm to that person or his/her reputation, by tending to bring the target into ridicule, hatred, scorn or contempt of others.” Libel is one form of defamation that is distinguished by how it is done, through the broadcast or dissemination of a printed material, like a book. Slander is another form of defamation but one that is done orally like spoken in a public meeting. Can Trump sue for defamation and win? To win a defamation suit, according to one law firm, one must prove A) that the statement made was false, B) that it caused “material harm” and C) that those who made the statement acted with malice or with negligence. Publicly elected officials have a higher bar to meet because, unlike private citizens, statements made about them are probably a matter of public importance. Public officials like Trump, still, have recourse when they can prove “actual malice” or that the falsehoods made were done recklessly or maliciously.)
