http://www.nprillinois.org/post/idot-staff-assistants-sue-get-jobs-back#stream/0
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In 2016, Rauner issued a press release saying his administration had ended a “patronage hiring scandal” at the Illinois Department of Transportation. At issue were hundreds of people who’d gotten so-called staff assistant jobs under former governors Rod Blagojevich and Pat Quinn. These were political hires into jobs that should have been protected from that sort of thing. Attorney Don Craven says the eight workers suing Rauner eventually made their way into non-political jobs, but that didn’t save them. He says their firing was political. “This allegation is that these people were fired by IDOT because they’re Democrats and they refused to become affiliated with the Rauner administration,” Craven says. “That’s precisely what the first amendment says you can’t do — you can’t fire people because of their political affiliation.” The lawsuit is seeking to get the employees reinstated — with seniority, back pay and benefits. Asked for comment, the Rauner administration did not directly address the allegations in the lawsuit. Spokeswoman Patty Schuh says the administration has been “working hand-in-hand with the [Office of the Executive Inspector General’s] hiring monitoring unit and the court-appointed special master to clean up the corrupt political system created by previous governors.”)

— Maine West Principal Haugan paid in $358K to teachers pension fund, could collect $7.1 million in retirement (DIERSEN: In 1966-1997 dollars, I paid $70,932 into the Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS). So far, in today’s dollars, CSRS has paid me $1,084,822 ($4,322 X 251 months). If I was still working for GAO, CSRS would not have paid me anything, and in today’s dollars, I would have paid $183,497 ($731 X 251 months) into the CSRS. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Defendant Rauner made comments that expressed his political animus to those individuals who supported Democrats or public-sector unions. Some of those comments were directed at some plaintiffs. […] The real reason for the termination of these Plaintiffs was that they were employed by the prior administration (under then Governor Patrick Quinn who was a member of the Democratic Party) or that they refused to become affiliated with the Rauner Administration. * Pretext… Despite the long-standing policy of IDOT to review and update job descriptions of employees, at no time after their reassignments did supervisory personnel, or personnel in the Bureau of Personnel verify the accuracy of Plaintiffs’ job descriptions or update the job descriptions to more accurately reflect the work being assigned to each Plaintiff. Defendants then used the job descriptions, which were intentionally allowed to become outdated as the pretense to terminate the employment of these Plaintiffs.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Hello. We’ve probably never met, but we think it’s safe to assume you’re the kind of person who wouldn’t walk into a convenience store and take a newspaper without paying for it. Asking for unlimited, free access to our website is the online equivalent of stealing a paper from the store. We can’t stay in business if we give our product away for free. We’ve had a paywall on our site for more than five years, but until recently, if you were coming to an article from social media, our content was free to view. Today, if a reader accesses more than 10 stories in a 30-day period, we will ask them to subscribe to continue reading our work, regardless of which source they use to find our journalism. Many people hit that limit early in the month. The change is long overdue and should have been made years ago. At the Standard-Times, we employ more than 25 people, 11 of them journalists who live in and love San Angelo. This doesn’t include the contract delivery personnel who deliver the print edition each day. These people work hard to bring important news to our audience. This award-winning staff keeps readers updated about events in town, attends countless public meetings and spends nights and weekends bringing you up-to-the-minute sports content. They request public records (and often fight for them) so you know what’s happening in your government. They report on breaking news so you know how you can keep yourself and your family safe. Salaries, newsprint, computers, pens, notebooks, smartphones and other reporting tools aren’t free. We spend thousands of dollars annually on criminal court documents alone. That’s on top of hundreds we spent on arrest documents, open records requests and other measures to hold government agencies accountable to the public.)

https://qz.com/1348882/us-household-wealth-for-the-bottom-50-is-half-of-what-it-was-in-2007/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: When it comes to wealth, the poorest American households are much worse off than they were in 2007. In fact, they are no better, in terms of wealth, than they were in 1971. . .In contrast, the average household in the bottom 50% had about half as much wealth in 2016 as they did in 2007. Poorer households typically invest in homes and other physical assets, and put little to no money in stocks. As a result, they have not participated in the post-recession wealth recovery.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Security researchers argued that Facebook should have been able to move much faster because there were clear signs that the accounts were part of a coordinated campaign. One of the accounts, called “Resisters” on Facebook and Twitter, billed itself on both platforms as a feminist page that emphasized themes of gender equality and female empowerment – with a clear opposition to President Donald Trump’s agenda. . .But Facebook offered little information to explain why it drew that conclusion – besides that the Resisters group briefly had a known account administrator from the Internet Research Agency. On Twitter, the “resisters” account was spelled as “@resistersunion,” but included the name “resisters” in its profile. Facebook’s equivalent, which organized a June protest outside the headquarters of Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Washington via its Facebook page, was “Resisters.” The “Resisters” Facebook page had the same profile image as the Twitter account – a red feminist symbol with the letters RS inside it.)

https://www.weeklystandard.com/adam-rubenstein/kid-trump
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, has made it his business to ‘own the libs,’ and business is booming. On July 23, hundreds of students gathered at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., for Turning Point USA’s fourth annual High School Leadership Summit. The four-day event was a sequence of workshops on campus activism and student leadership punctuated by speeches by prominent conservatives, from House whip Steve Scalise and Education secretary Betsy DeVos to rabble-rousers like Sebastian Gorka and Anthony Scaramucci. Backstage at TPUSA events you’ll find facsimiles of both the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. Placed on a table with cellophane overlays, the pages aren’t just symbols—and they aren’t there for reference. TPUSA’s speakers and celebrity guests are asked to sign the documents. Scan the pages and you’ll see the John Hancocks of Ann Coulter, Judge Jeanine Pirro, Donald Trump lawyer Jay Sekulow, ex-Fox News star Kimberly Guilfoyle, Donald Trump Jr., and Lara Trump right on top of the Founders’ words. You’ll find the scribbled signatures of Gateway Pundit’s Jim Hoft, Ohio congressman Jim Jordan, Brexit evangelist Nigel Farage, and the NRA’s Dana Loesch. Ginni Thomas, the wife of Clarence Thomas, wrote “TPUSA ROCKS” above her name. RNC spokesperson Kayleigh McEnany printed a Bible verse below hers and added “MAGA.” The documents are a memento of TPUSA events but also a who’s who of the powerbrokers of conservatism in the age of Trump. Charlie Kirk, TPUSA’s founder, calls himself “the luckiest 24-year-old ever to exist.” He started the group six years ago instead of going to college and now has 130,000 high school students, undergrads, and recent college graduates on board in what he calls the fight “to save Western civilization.” He sees himself as a general in the “culture war” and TPUSA’s members as “culture warriors”—effective “disrupters” of the left on campus and eventually across America. Kirk travels nonstop; he spent more than 300 days last year on the road giving speeches and meeting with donors, students, and politicians. Everywhere he goes he spreads the message that “Big Government Sucks” and “Socialism Sucks.” This fall he’s thinking of selling a T-shirt that says, “Bring Back ISIS, Vote Democrat 2018.”)

http://thehill.com/policy/technology/400010-shadowy-facebook-activities-led-to-real-life-trump-protests
(FROM THE ARTICLE: At least three of the events co-organized on Facebook by a group the company now thinks was part of a coordinated disinformation network appear to have been held, and to have been attended by hundreds of people. The events, in New York City and Springfield, Mo., were all co-hosted on Facebook by a group called the Resisters. All three events were critical of President Trump. . .All three events were hosted by what appear to be legitimate groups in addition to the Resisters. Facebook on Tuesday said “inauthentic” groups, including Resisters, created roughly 30 events. Facebook in a call with reporters highlighted fake pages set up by the groups, but said it had no evidence on whether the events actually took place. There is some evidence that the events set up by Resisters were meant to piggy-back on existing, legitimate events by opponents of Trump. Indivisible St. Louis told The Hill that its Springfield event was already being organized when Resisters contacted them on Facebook. They also said that they did not encounter any representatives from Resisters at the protest.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: For nearly seven months, Mr. Kavanaugh, now President Trump’s nominee to replace Justice Kennedy on the Supreme Court, worked for Mr. Starr once again, despite his objections, helping to assemble the case that the president had an affair with Monica Lewinsky and obstructed justice by trying to cover it up. It was Mr. Kavanaugh who pressed Mr. Starr to aggressively question Mr. Clinton on the details of his sexual relationship with Ms. Lewinsky and who drafted the section of Mr. Starr’s report to the House that laid out 11 possible grounds for Mr. Clinton’s impeachment. Mr. Kavanaugh’s decision to return to Mr. Starr’s side plunged him into an immersion course in the brutal ways of Washington combat, forever connecting him to an investigation that Democrats called a partisan witch hunt, foreshadowing the epithet that Republicans now use to describe the efforts of the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III.)

https://www.al.com/news/index.ssf/2018/07/crossover_voting_ban_what_to_k.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Tuesday’s primary runoff will be another test for Alabama’s crossover voting ban. The Alabama Legislature passed a law in 2017 banning crossover voting. The law specifically prohibits voters from casting a ballot for one party in a primary and then switching to the other party to cast a ballot in the runoff. Simply put: If you voted on the Democratic ballot in the primary, you can only vote in the Democratic runoff. If you voted a Republican ballot in the primary, you can only vote in the Republican runoff. If you didn’t vote in the primary, you are free to cast a ballot in whichever party runoff you choose. No matter what your vote, there are no restrictions on the Nov. 6 general election, where you can choose whichever candidate you prefer. Gov. Kay Ivey signed the crossover voting ban law in 2017. At the time, Sen. Tom Whatley, R-Auburn, said the bill “helps the Democrats choose Democratic candidate” and helps “Republicans choose Republican candidates.” Enforcing the ban In the October special U.S. Senate election to replace Jeff Sessions, Secretary of State John Merrill said his office had identified 674 cases in which people voted in the Democratic primary election on Aug. 15, 2017 and then crossed over to vote in the Republican runoff election on Sept. 26, 2017. A later review found most of the voters in question were on the wrong list. One-hundred-forty instances of crossover voting were confirmed but none were deemed necessary by local probate judges to investigate further or pursue prosecution, Merrill’s office said. Merrill has been mum on if crossover violators will be prosecuted this time, however. In an update from his office, Merrill only reminded voters of the rules and encouraged people to get out and vote. “Some candidates for both parties have already been selected, but voters are encouraged to return to the polls to make the final selections for their party representatives,” Merrill said.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Last month, Rep. Christian Mitchell (D-Chicago) was interviewed by Chicago Public Radio about his new role as interim executive director of the Democratic Party of Illinois. Mitchell was asked at one point about what the state party planned to do to counter Dan Proft’s newspaper empire. Proft, a conservative activist and radio talk show host, operates about 40 news websites, from the Lake County Gazette to Rock Island Today to the Carbondale Reporter. They all run stories with a decided tilt toward Proft’s favored Republican candidates, who are pro-life, anti-union and pro-gun. Proft receives millions of dollars from ultra-wealthy businessman Dick Uihlein (Proft’s Liberty Principles PAC reported receiving another $3.5 million just last week from Uihlein). Rep. Mitchell called Proft’s papers “fake news,” and clarified that he didn’t mean to use the term the way President Donald Trump employs it to describe the Washington Post, the New York Times, CNN and other established national news outlets. Mitchell said his party intends to counter Proft’s pro-GOP, anti-Democratic Party messages with its own messaging.)

My Democrat IRS superiors would not have taken the aforesaid actions against me if I had been a Democrat, a minority, a female, or a veteran.)
https://www.dailysignal.com/2018/07/26/the-irs-has-rehired-hundreds-of-fired-employees-congress-should-step-in/
https://amac.us/the-irs-has-rehired-hundreds-of-fired-employees-congress-should-step-in/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: For one of the most punitive agencies in the federal government, the IRS sure is forgiving with its own employees. Rep. Kristi Noem, R-S.D., has proposed a bill that would prevent the IRS from rehiring employees fired for misconduct or poor performance. The bill, titled the Ensuring Integrity in the IRS Workforce Act, follows a recent Treasury inspector general report that shows the IRS rehired more than 200 fired workers in a little over a year. A previous inspector general report proves this problem dates back to at least 2009. According to the Treasury Department’s inspector general, the IRS did not provide officials responsible for hiring decisions with information about employment history, though that information is readily available. As a result, the IRS—an agency with nearly unrivaled access to citizens’ personal information and capacity to harass individual taxpayers—rehired: A fired worker with several misdemeanor theft convictions and one count of felony possession of a forgery device. 11 employees previously disciplined for unauthorized access to taxpayer accounts. An employee who was absent without leave for 270 hours—the equivalent of 33 work days. An employee fired for physically threatening co-workers. An employee fired for lying about previous criminal convictions on employment forms. 17 employees previously caught falsifying official documents. Often, these employees do not have to wait long to get their old offices back. Two IRS employees fired for poor performance were rehired within six months. Faced with these findings, the IRS was unapologetic. In a response letter to the Inspector General’s Office, the IRS’ chief human capital officer wrote that the IRS “determined its current process is more than adequate to mitigate any risks to American taxpayers, federal agencies, and its employees.” Given that the IRS refuses to change its hiring process, swift congressional action is necessary. And Noem’s bill has a good chance to pass. In fact, a previous version of this legislation passed the House, 345-78, a little more than two years ago. These inspector general reports and the IRS’ response are especially disturbing given the IRS’ extraordinary power over citizens. No department or agency should be able to rehire employees fired for misconduct or poor performance. Future legislation should make federal employees non-hirable throughout the federal government. This may sound unduly harsh. After all, like private-sector managers, federal managers sometimes may be unfairly critical toward employees that rub them the wrong way. But, unlike in the private sector, there are multiple safeguards in place to prevent wrongful terminations. Fired federal employees have four separate agencies to help them challenge a termination. In many cases, an employee can have multiple agencies review their case one after another. Thorough to the point of absurdity, this complicated process of appeals (which I describe here) can tie up managers, arbitrators, and administrative judges for years. Given the incredibly high burden of firing one employee, many managers choose to ignore problem employees as long as possible. A recent survey found only 44 percent of federal employees agree that “steps are taken to deal with a poor performer who cannot or will not improve” in their workplace. On average, the federal government fires about 10,000 employees a year out of a workforce of 2.1 million. In other words, one in every 200 federal employees is fired in a given year. Only state and local education employees have greater job security. Given their rarity, it’s safe to assume that pink slips are well earned in the federal workforce. Recipients of this dubious distinction have gotten all the second chances they deserve. When federal employees are shown the door, they should not be let back in. Noem’s legislation is a long-overdue correction to federal personnel practices tailored to fit workers, rather than meet the mission.)

— Even if you loathe Trump, vote Republican – Hugh Hewitt
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/commentary/ct-perspec-votegop-midterms-democrats-disaster-pelosi-schumer-0801-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Electing Democrats to a majority in the House or the Senate at the height of the party’s lurch left would be a disaster: Impeachment, demands for massive income tax hikes and the effort to abolish ICE would follow, while also throwing the military rebuild into reverse and the economy into paralysis because of the inability of business to predict the future with anything like certainty. A radicalized Democratic Party puffed by a Trump-loathing Manhattan-Beltway elite wouldn’t bring us a political environment as fraught as 1861 or even 1968, but the Clinton impeachment and the Watergate scandal eras are fair parallels to the atmosphere that would follow if Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., returns to power or Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., gets his wish to run the Senate. So even if you loathe the president, vote Republican. The downside of Democratic majorities in either house of Congress is so much larger than another two years like the last two. Both 2017 and 2018 have been polarizing and stressful for sure, but very productive for national security and economic vitality. Are most voters going to choose venting over their pocketbooks and their security? I hope not.)

— Union says Gov. Rauner is dragging feet on step raises – Doug Finke (DIERSEN: What pay increases have you received? Because of cost of living adjustments, step increases, and promotions, my pay increased every year that I worked for Post Office 1966-1969, IRS 1971-1980, and GAO 1980-1997, except 1980 when I took a $19,203 (26%) pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO. In today’s dollars, my pay increased from $15.85/hour to $16.91/hour while I worked for the Post Office; from $45,703/year to $91,880/year while I worked for IRS; and from $72,677/year to $125,325/year while worked for GAO. My critics/opponents argue that those increases prove that my Democrat superiors in the federal government do not discriminate against me or retaliate against me. But I argue that if they had not discriminated or retaliated against me, they would have promoted me to GS-13 (currently $96,403) by age 25, GS-14 (currently $113,920) by age 30, GS-15 (currently $134,000) by age 35, and Senior Executive Service (currently $164,200) by age 40. — FRONT PAGE: Employers Eager to Hire Try a New Policy: ‘No Experience Necessary’ Inexperienced job applicants face better odds in the labor market as more companies drop work-history and degree requirements – Kelsey Gee (DIERSEN: What work experience, education, and professional certifications do you have? GAO audits IRS. When I transferred from IRS to GAO in 1980 when I was 31 years old, my Democrat GAO superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates dismissed, belittled, badmouthed, demonized, denigrated, and condemned a) the work experience that I had gained by working for IRS for almost 9 years, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $81,071-$91,880, b) what I had learned earning an MBA from Loyola in 1976, c) what I had learned taking graduate accounting courses at DePaul since 1976, and d) what I had learned to pass the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979.)

— Constraining the Political Beliefs of Federal Government Employees (DIERSEN: Did any of your employers punish you for your political beliefs? My Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, gave me unfair performance expectations and appraisals, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, got rid of my mentor in 1987, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take an $19,203 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980. My Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, got rid of my mentor in 1975, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974. My Democrat Post Office superiors forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests in 1969 and 1968.)
https://thevaughnlawfirm.com/constraining-the-political-beliefs-of-federal-government-employees/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: If a federal government employee is fired and/or discriminated against because of their political beliefs, the action would arguably be in contradiction to the United States Constitution, particularly due to the fact that it would potentially violate free speech rights as well as the right to due process. Discrimination that is based on an employee’s political beliefs occurs when an employer makes job decisions regarding that employee because of their political beliefs, civic activities, or party affiliation. For instance, if an employer demotes anyone who refuses to vote for a certain political party or does not hire someone as a result of their stance on a particular issue, then that employer is likely engaged in political discrimination. While there are no specific laws that prohibit discrimination based on political views, federal government employees have constitutional protections that prohibit the abuse of government power. The First Amendment guarantees the right to free speech, and thus, it can protect an employee’s political views, but it is important to note that this protection is for government employees rather than those that work for private employers. Even if there is not a valid reason to raise a free speech argument, it is possible that political discrimination may be illegal on other grounds. For example, depending on the facts and circumstances of your case, the political discrimination might be considered illegal religious or race-based discrimination. An experienced and knowledgeable Federal Employment Law Attorney can review your case and determine whether you have a viable discrimination claim.)

NBC NEWS
— GOP volunteers hit streets to save House from ‘Blue Wave’ “You didn’t even see Republican signs because it was assumed that everyone was voting Republican,” a resident of Wheaton, Illinois, said. – Shaquille Brewster (DIERSEN: Includes 3-minute video.)
https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/gop-volunteers-hit-streets-save-house-blue-wave-n895546
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Glen Ellyn, Ill. — Thousands of Republican volunteers were deployed this weekend in a “Super Saturday” push to protect their House majority — knocking on doors, handing out flyers, and calling voters. The Congressional Leadership Fund (CLF), a super PAC backed by House Speaker Paul Ryan, has been aggressive on television airwaves, but Saturday showcased their national field operation, making around 400,000 contacts with voters. . .NBC News followed a field team in Glen Ellyn, west of Chicago, Saturday afternoon. “We’re targeting local issues in local communities, it’s different in each congressional district,” Alexander said when asked about the message to voters. “Here in Illinois we’re talking about the Great Lakes, whereas in Washington we’re talking about Salmon hatcheries, and in Florida we’re talking about the Everglades.” CLF’s push is a sign of how seriously outside groups on both sides are taking the 2018 midterm battle. Volunteers in Illinois wore shirts with the words “Call. Knock. Win. Repeat!” on the back on Saturday. Buoyed by an energized democratic base, Democrats believe they are well positioned to flip the 23 legislative seats they need in order to snatch back control of the House. One of their top targets is Illinois sixth congressional district, home to Republican Rep. Peter Roskam. Roskam has been reelected by near 20-point margins in the past, but represents a suburban Chicago district that Hillary Clinton won by seven points. It’s a top target for national and state Democrats and CFL knows this, building a field office in a low-profile office building deep in the district. The room mirrors a typical campaign office, filled with GOP-themed posters, flyers advocating for the congressman, and a whiteboard listing weekly contact goals. Their aim: to keep Roskam’s Democratic challenger Sean Casten at a distance. “GDP! Good grief, it’s just amazing,” Susan Dahlstedt said to a group of CLF volunteers that knocked on her door in Wheaton, Illinois, referring to gross domestic product and strong economic numbers overall. The strong Trump supporter who suggested to the young group “he can keep his mouth shut sometimes” said she fears a democratic majority voting to impeach the president. “We’ve got to keep the house, it’s really essential,” Dahlstedt said soberly, promising to vote in November. A few blocks over, Michael Vassola saw the same volunteers walk past his house. It’s a Republican effort he says he’s never seen before in his neighborhood. “This is very much a staunchly Republican place,” he said. “You didn’t even see Republican signs because it was assumed that everyone was voting Republican.” But Vassola added: “I’ve lived in this neighborhood for a while and I’m seeing more and more Sean Casten signs — including in the one in front of my house.”)

A Republican Foreign Relations Committee aide speaking on the condition of anonymity offered a more upbeat assessment. “We were happy to work with our Democratic counterparts in resolving questions about hiring at MCC as we do regularly in exercising the committee’s oversight function,” the aide said. “Such oversight is important for all agencies under the committee’s jurisdiction, and we will continue working in a bipartisan manner moving forward.”)

— SIU School of Journalism a great place to start in media – Meera Komarraju (DIERSEN: Since I became the GOPUSA Illinois Editor in 2000, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have viciously demonized me, viciously denigrated me, and viciously condemned me because I do not have as degree in journalism. In my defense, I worked for GAO for almost 18 years 1980-1997, the last 11 years of which, at the GS-13 Step 1-10 levels, currently $96,403-$125,325. Much of what I did for GAO is similar to what journalists do – interviewing, conducting surveys, gathering facts, summarizing facts, analyzing facts, and writing reports. Two of the GAO reports that I worked on are at http://www.gao.gov/assets/160/154342.pdf(FINANCIAL DERIVATIVES: Actions Needed to Protect the Financial System) and at http://www.gao.gov/assets/160/156011.pdf (OTC DERIVATIVES: Additional Oversight Could Reduce Costly Sales Practice Disputes).)

In 1971, when I was 22 years old, I accepted IRS’s job offer BECAUSE OLDSMOBILE WITHDREW A JOB OFFER THAT I HAD ACCEPTED SAYING THAT IT HAD JUST AGREED TO STOP HIRING WHITES TO SETTLE AN EEOC COMPLAINT.)
https://nurse.org/articles/new-york-city-pays-settlement-to-nurses-lawsuit/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Now, however, New York City is paying out $20.6 million dollars thanks to a class-action lawsuit with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) that ultimately found that the pension plan was gender discriminatory towards male-oriented professions, leaving out nursing because it has traditionally been a female-majority led form of work. The EEOC determined that nursing requires a high threshold for physical requirements, with injury rates, illness and physical strain in general being one of the highest of any profession.)
