(FROM THE EDITORIAL: The unfortunate thing about state Rep. Anne Stava-Murray’s description of her hometown as “white supremacist” is less how wrong and irresponsible the characterization is than how destructive it is to a conversation that needs to continue. In an interview last week with the Daily Herald’s Marie Wilson, the Naperville Democrat doubled down on a Facebook post that attracted broad criticism, insisting that long-dead policies and practices in “the whole Chicago region” justify claiming that today we see “white supremacy in an unclad kind of way, without its hood on” in contemporary policies and attitudes. Her comments, let us state flatly, are patently offensive and outrageously exaggerated. Whatever racial inequities and prejudices exist in Naperville or any other Chicago suburb, they cannot remotely be compared to the openly hostile and vile actions and behaviors of a misguided subset of white Americans who espouse ignorant claims of racial superiority and urge separation from and subjugation of other races. That she does not recognize the insult in her remark and believes “starting a conversation” justifies it is a bitter reflection on the quality of her own judgment and a worrisome suggestion about her own ability to operate effectively as a leader in her community.)

As I explained in my June 9 blog post, a man named Dale Kleber sued CareFusion Corp. for discriminatory hiring practices in violation of the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA). Or it can show up in more overt behaviors — a forgotten meeting invite, a blatant preference for a younger colleague or even hiring discrimination. But new research shows that age bias doesn’t affect men and women equally. In fact, older men face harsher penalties than older women. Battling stereotypes By 2022, 25 percent of the American workforce is estimated to be comprised of workers age 55 and older, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. But claims of age-based discrimination are already on the rise, says Michael North, assistant professor of management and organizations at New York University. Comparing the number of age discrimination complaints filed to the EEOC in 1999 to the number of claims now shows that the problem isn’t going away. This tension in modern workplaces, Mr. North says, often involves younger employees viewing older employees as overly aggressive, or selfishly refusing to step down from the C-suite and leadership roles. The stereotypical version of this kind of older worker — who continues to work past retirement age, sowing discord among younger employees who covet the senior position — is usually male.
