WGN TV
— Rauner’s conservative predicament – TAHMAN BRADLEY
https://wgntv.com/2018/11/02/illinois-republicans-angry-with-rauner-say-theyll-still-vote-for-him/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: To win four years ago, Bruce Rauner campaigned as a fiscal conservative with no social agenda. He offered up a 44-point turnaround plan to shake up Springfield. Conservative and moderate Republicans loved it. But not long after Rauner took office, the right revolted. When it was time to seek reelection, he drew a primary challenge from State Rep. Jeanne Ives. “You know I started to lose hope that he was really going to be on the track fiscally as soon as he entered office,” Ives said. “And it had to do with him expanding massively pre-school in a state where we couldn’t afford it. We were going to try to grab on to $20 million per year on a federal grant. But we were going to have to phony up $400 million just to get that money.” It’s not just finances. Ives’ anger exploded when Rauner approved a law protecting undocumented immigrants and then later signed a measure expanding taxpayer-subsidized abortions. “I’m a social conservative and we’ve taken it on the chin, even under a Republican governor, we’ve not gotten what we wanted. The promises were not kept,” Ives said. Rauner defeated Ives by a razor thin margin, about 20,000 votes. After the primary, party leaders emphasized the need for unity. But Rauner and Ives did not do that. When asked if she did everything she could to help him win, Ives said: “That was never my job. I was very upfront with people.” Ives predicts Rauner will lose, but she says she will vote for him. . .McSweeney has been harsh critic of Governor Rauner, but he’s sticking with him in the race. “Our best hope is to reelect Rauner because he’s not going to opening promote tax increases. But I’d be a hypocrite if I said positive things about the first term. It’s been a fiasco across the board,” McSweeney said. Like Ives, the McSweeney fears Rauner could be doomed. But he sees a chance for the conservative movement to regroup. “If Bruce Rauner ends up losing we need to realize that we need to go back to our grassroots. We need to be inclusive. We need to be a positive party. We’ve got to stop calling people names and focus on an agenda that makes sense,” McSweeney said.)

WHEATON RECORD
— Upcoming midterm election sparks conversation on campus – CHARLES HERMESMANN
http://www.wheatonrecord.com/news/upcoming-midterm-election-sparks-conversation-on-campus/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: As the election approaches, Wheaton political science faculty have taken particular interest in the Roskam vs. Casten race. Dr. Amy Black noted that the race has changed from “too close to call” to “leans Democratic” in recent articles and polls. “The momentum seems to be moving in Casten’s favor,” Black said. She predicts that many late voters will choose to vote against the incumbent. “Since voters typically know the person currently in office, those who are still ambivalent at the end are likely showing a tendency to choose the new alternative.” Dr. Bryan McGraw voiced his view that the midterm election was still too close to call: “I honestly don’t know,” he said. “I suspect it will come down to a relatively small number of votes, maybe less than 500, and it’s impossible to tell at that small of a margin.” While McGraw still sees the race as too close to call, he agrees that this race marks a change in Wheaton’s congressional district. “Regardless of who wins, it’s clear that the district is trending more centrist, which will have a constraining effect on the representative. And which means we will probably see competitive elections here for the foreseeable future.” Some Wheaton students, like senior political science major Emma Wen, will be voting for the first time in this year’s midterm election. “I believe strongly in fulfilling one’s civic duty to vote — it is a privilege and right which should not be taken lightly,” she said. Wen Upcoming midterm election sparks conversation on campus expects this year’s election to have a significant impact on the country as a whole: “I think the ultimate outcome of these midterms will be the decisive approval or disapproval of President Trump and the Republican Party by voters.” No matter the outcome of the 2018 midterm election, politicians and political pundits seem certain that it will have major effects on the country’s policies.)

But Clinton also claimed victory in his district, fueling Democratic optimism in the six-term Republican’s affluent, Chicagoland district. The Cook Political Report puts the race between Roskam and Democrat Sean Casten in the “Lean Democratic” column, and strategists say that Roskam’s prospects are shaky. Democrats are outspending Republicans to boost Casten in the district, and a recent New York Times/Siena College poll put the Democrat ahead by 2 points. Meanwhile, Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner (R) is struggling in his bid for a second term and a poor performance on his part could trickle down the ballot, says one GOP strategist.)

— Ives urges vote for legislative candidates, not governor – Rick Pearson
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-met-fritz-kaegi-democratic-mailer-20181022-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: State Rep. Jeanne Ives, the Wheaton Republican who lost a March bid for the GOP nomination for governor to Rauner by 3 percentage points, is urging a vote for Republican legislative candidates and not Illinois’ chief executive. In an appearance on KFTK-FM 97.1, a conservative talk station in the St. Louis suburb of Florrisant, Mo., that reaches southwestern Illinois, Ives criticized both Rauner and Republican state Sen. Sam McCann of Plainview who is running for governor under the Conservative Party banner. “The Republican Party’s in complete disarray. Let’s face it, Rauner’s going to lose, in my estimation,” Ives said, adding, “So, the fight is in the Illinois House and in the Illinois Senate. Those are your first line of defense against the bad policies going forward.” Ives, who has not endorsed a candidate for governor, said there are Republicans “all over the place as to what they’re going to do on the governor’s race,” in part because of Rauner’s signature on laws expanding abortion, immigration and transgender rights. She said people who thought they “could find a conservative in Sam McCann” shouldn’t trust the state senator because of mailers he’s sending out attacking some social conservatives as backers of Rauner and of being less than Republicans. “So now conservatives have been betrayed once again and they have no place to go,” Ives said.)

KIPLINGER
— Retirees, Go Ahead and Spend a Little (More) Successful savers have prospered by living below their means. Frugality often becomes a preference—sometimes to an excessive degree. – ANNE KATES SMITH (DIERSEN: Since my Democrat GAO superiors succeeded in forcing me to take their early retirement “offer” in 1997 when I was 49 years old, I have been able to increase my retirement saving because of my wife’s income.)
https://www.kiplinger.com/article/spending/T031-C023-S002-how-frugal-retirement-savers-can-spend-wisely.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A recent study by the Employee Benefit Research Institute found that the majority of retirees are spending down their assets surprisingly slowly during the first two decades of retirement. People who retired with $200,000 to $500,000 in savings, not including their homes, had spent a bit more than one-fourth of their assets, EBRI found. Those with more assets — $500,000 or more — had parted with even less, spending down less than 12% of savings over a 20-year span. And about one-third of the retirees in the study increased their savings over the period.)

CRAIN’S CHICAGO BUSINESS
— After Rauner: Ricketts, the IMA and the future of the Illinois GOP The shift of millions of dollars in dark money suggests the fight for control of the Illinois Republican Party is on, with implications for Chicago’s mayoral race, too. – GREG HINZ (DIERSEN: He who pays the piper calls the tunes. As everyone knows, anti-conservatives have always a) dominated the Illinois Republican Party (IRP) and b) blamed conservatives for all losses that Republicans have suffered in Illinois. Those anti-conservatives want the IRP a) to officially demonize, denigrate, condemn, and banish Trump, b) to officially banish Trump supporters from the IRP, c) to officially strike the traditional family, right to life, immigration, and Second Amendment planks from the IRP platform, d) to officially promote LGBTQ activity, abortion, mass/illegal immigration, abolition of the Second Amendment, booze, gambling, pot, and other vices, etc., and e) to officially banish conservatives, that is, Republicans, from the IRP.)
https://www.chicagobusiness.com/greg-hinz-politics/after-rauner-ricketts-ima-and-future-illinois-gop
(FROM THE ARTICLE: All of this is occurring as Republican chatter builds about what will happen after Rauner and the tens of millions of dollars he’s plowed into the party are gone. Ricketts reportedly is interested in stepping up his activity, perhaps with Griffin as a partner, insiders say. The Ricketts clan does have quite a political pedigree, with Todd Ricketts’ brother, Pete Ricketts, now the governor of Nebraska, and his sister, Laura Ricketts, a leading national Democratic donor. Chairman Schneider, in an interview, said his term has well over three more years to run and “at this point,” he expects to complete it. But he conceded that considerable concern about the future is being raised in a party in which conservative activist state Rep. Jeanne Ives almost defeated Rauner in the March primary, and conservative activist Dan Proft, with help from wealthy businessman Dick Uhlein, has been running millions of ads on behalf of Illinois House candidates he says will be independent of both Rauner and Democratic House Speaker Mike Madigan. “I definitely think there will be a change in leadership of the party after Rauner loses,” Ives says. “I expect to sit with all parts of the party after the election,” Schneider told me. “We’ll put our collective heads together to try to sort out things should work together.” As for Ricketts—a spokesman denied to Politico that he or his family are involved in dark money activities—I wish we had a lot of people like Todd,” Schneider said. “He’s a great guy.”)

— Americans are divided over everything except division Across a broad collection of groups – Democrats and Republicans, Clinton voters and Trump voters – more than 70 percent say the nation is divided. – Dante Chinni and Sally Bronston (DIERSEN: What do you say to those who say that they are religious, conservative, and/or Republican AND who ever-increasingly blame Trump and blame his supporters like me for their problems?)
https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/first-read/americans-are-divided-over-everything-except-division-n922511
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The poll asked respondents who they blame for the nation’s disunited state and when you look at their answers through the frame of Donald Trump’s presidency, sharp divisions emerge. Among the 30 percent of respondents in the poll who strongly approve of President Trump’s job performance, there is a pretty clear line of blame for the nation’s divided nature. The “Democratic Party/Liberals” lead the way with this group, as one might expect. Next on the list is former President “Barack Obama.” Trump’s supporters also cast a somewhat wider net. They give some blame to “Godless”ness, “The Media,” and “The People/General Public of America.” Some even go as far as mentioning “Donald Trump,” but on the whole, there is a distinct partisan cast to the list. On the other side of the Trump divide, the 43 percent who strongly disapprove of President Trump’s job performance, we can see an even clearer picture. Donald Trump’s name stands apart from every other option on the list of potential causes with this group. Following behind the president is the “Republican Party/Conservatives” but no other answer rates very high. This is a distinctly blue view of the nation’s disunity. And among the 27 percent of respondents who neither strongly approve nor disapprove of Trump’s job performance, the president takes most of the blame, but his opponents take a hit as well.)

— The Trump trap – Republicans duck president in key House races
https://www.politicususa.com/2018/10/17/special-report-the-trump-trap-republicans-duck-president-in-key-house-races-2.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Six-term Representative Peter Roskam has a good sense of how voters in Illinois’ 6th Congressional District feel about the president. Despite re-electing the Republican congressman in 2016, they backed Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton over Trump by nearly 7 percentage points. The district typifies the battlegrounds where Republican candidates face anti-Trump headwinds: a fast-growing suburb west of Chicago with a median income near $100,000. Roskam has made no statements of support for Trump on his website or in posts this year to his social media accounts. He acknowledges that associating himself with the president might do more harm than good. Having Trump campaign for him in the district “obviously wouldn’t be helpful,” he said in an interview. Roskam has criticized Trump’s tariffs on imported goods and has decried the administration’s separation of immigrant children from parents. After Trump held a July press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin and refused to condemn Putin for interference in the 2016 U.S. elections, Roskam called Trump’s performance “an affront to American democracy.” But Roskam notes that he also backs the president on issues important to pro-Trump voters, such as raising military spending and lowering taxes. In an August tweet, Roskam described as “absurd” a statement by his Democratic opponent comparing Trump with al Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden. “This district is discerning,” Roskam said, and voters want a candidate who will represent their interests independent of the president. But Roskam’s reluctance to embrace Trump isn’t enough for some of the anti-Trump Republicans he’s trying to capture. “Peter Roskam has distanced himself from Trump, but he doesn’t stand up to him,” said Bill Wentz, 73, a lifelong Republican and former federal government lawyer. Roskam hasn’t done enough to fight the president on economic policies that Wentz says undermine traditional Republican support for free markets by picking “winners and losers.” He also is uncomfortable with Trump’s failure to fully embrace U.S. intelligence agencies’ finding that Russia interfered in the 2016 U.S. elections. Wentz’s answer: vote for Roskam’s Democratic opponent, Sean Casten.)

October 12 Evening Edition

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Trump looms large as Rep. Peter Roskam fights for his political life against Sean Casten – Patrick M. O’Connell, Mike Riopell (DIERSEN: This article includes a report on what Roskam said and on what others said concerning Roskam at the Milton Township Republican Central Committee’s (MTRCC) outstanding meeting Wednesday evening, October 10, 2018, at the Wheaton Bowl Banquet Hall. 15 candidates were at the meeting – 1 for a federal office: Peter Roskam; 5 for state offices: Peter Breen, Mike Connelly, Amy Grant, Jay Kinzler, and Seth Lewis; eight for county offices: Grant Eckhoff, Gwen Henry, Paul Hinds, Jeff MacKay, Kevin Wiley, Karen Wilson, Chris Zaruba, and Jim Zay; and 1 for a municipal office: Suzanne Fitch. State Representative Jeanne Ives announced that she is circulating petitions for Wheaton mayoral candidate Phil Suess. Other meeting attendees included Ron Almiron, Roger Bohn, Lori Carlson, Joe Caruso, Bob Cherry, Jeff Cooper, Lynn Crane, Flo Dangelo, Tim Elliott (DuPage County Board), Sal Falbo (Milton Township Trustee), Mike Formento, Hide Holan, Babette Holder, Marty Keller (MTRCC Vice Chairman), Bob Krzyzewski, Larry LaVanway, Alex LeVan, Chris LeVan (MTRCC Chairman and Milton Township Assessor), Carl Lofgren, Paula McGowen (DuPage County Regional School Board Member), Bobby McNeily, Ron Menna, Dave Molitor (Milton Township Trustee), John Monino (MTRCC Secretary and Milton Township Trustee), Gary Muehlfelt (Milton Township Highway Commissioner), Barb Murphy (DuPage County Republican Party Chairwoman), Yadav Nathwani (MTRCC Treasurer and Milton Township Trustee), Nicole Prater (Winfield Township Republican Central Committee Chairman), Mary Rash, Pat Ryan, Janet Shaw, B.J. Slinger, Chuck Smith, and Tim Whelan (DuPage County Forest Preserve Commissioner). I have been a MTRCC member since 1999, and since then, I have had the best MTRCC meeting and MTRCC fundraiser attendance record. In 2002, I got MTRCC to begin holding its monthly meetings at the Wheaton Bowl, and MTRCC has met there ever since. In 2000, under MTRCC Chairman Randy Hultgren, I published MTRCC’s first website and I served as MTRCC’s webmaster 2000-2004 and 2008-2010. Both Hultgren and Roskam endorsed me when I first ran for Precinct Committeeman in 2000. Since 2000, I have included reports on MTRCC meetings and fundraisers in GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-met-peter-roskam-sean-casten-illinois-6th-20181011-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: As U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam rallied die-hard Republicans in a private room at the Wheaton Bowl’s banquet hall on Wednesday, Ed Raab was outside keeping watch over the check-in counter, the clatter of pins echoing across the lanes. “If I wasn’t working,” Raab said, “I’d be right in there with them.” Roskam shook a few hands, and chatted with campaign volunteers, local precinct committeemen and DuPage County candidates before he strode to the podium for a short speech. “I’m incredibly energized by this campaign,” Roskam said. “I’m incredibly heartened by all of your support. … Now is the time for us to press forward.” Behind him, next to stacks of yard signs, was a lifesize cardboard cutout of President Donald Trump flashing a thumbs-up. Someone had placed a red “Make America Great Again” cap atop the cardboard Trump’s head. . .To win, Roskam likely needs to strike a balance between keeping Trump supporters on board, but also preventing independent and centrist Republican voters from abandoning him even if they don’t like the president. “The people in this district, I don’t think they’d do that,” said Raab, who credited the biggest take-home pay he’s ever had in 42 years working at the bowling alley to the Republican tax overhaul Roskam championed. “I think they’re pretty true to the people they’re backing.” . . . “The reason the national Democratic Party believes that Congressman Roskam’s district is in play is solely based on President Trump,” said Kirk Dillard, a former DuPage County Republican chairman, state senator and Illinois governor candidate. Casten has tried to get into a position to capitalize, calling Trump the “worst president of our generation.” He raised twice as much money as Roskam last quarter, his $2.6 million buttressed by millions of dollars in advertising from a group backed by House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi. The latest spots hit Roskam over taxes and health care, saying it’s time he “checked out of Congress.” . . . “Peter wins close races because he is an exceptionally hard-working candidate, incredibly articulate speaker and has a volunteer base of dedicated individuals second to none,” Dillard said. Since that election 12 years ago, Democrats have made inroads in Roskam’s home base of DuPage County. President Barack Obama won the county twice, and the prosperous patchwork of suburbs recently has sent two Democratic state lawmakers to Springfield. Babette Holder, a Republican committeewoman in Wheaton, said the Trump factor matters “a lot” in this race. “I’ve never seen a midterm like this before,” Holder said. “I think it’ll be a big challenge this time.” But her hope is that when voters examine the issues, they’ll turn to Roskam, who she said breaks from the party and the president when necessary. “I am worried,” Holder said, “I’m not going to lie to you and say I’m not worried. It’ll come down to turnout.” . . . At the bowling alley on Wednesday, Raab said Roskam isn’t perfect, but he’s still preferable to the alternative. “He’s done some things I don’t agree with, but I like him a lot better than his opponent,” Raab said.)

FED SMITH
— Ensuring Accuracy of Federal Employee Personnel Files – Ralph R. Smith (DIERSEN: Of course, one can learn by looking at my Federal Employee Personnel File, at the Diersen v. GAO lawsuit file, and at related documents a) that my Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, gave me unfair performance expectations and appraisals, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, got rid of my mentor in 1987, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take a $19,203 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980; b) my Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, got rid of my mentor in 1975, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974; and c) that my Democrat Post Office superiors forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests in 1969 and 1968.)
