(FROM THE ARTICLE: Smoking will cost you big time in Illinois.  The habit will cost a smoker an estimated nearly $1.8 million throughout his or her lifetime, making Illinois among the costliest states in the nation for users, according to a new study. The study from WalletHub looked at the out-of-pocket cost to smokers as well as financial opportunity cost (how much money smokers would have made by investing money instead of spending it on cigarettes), healthcare cost, income loss per smoke and other expenses. The study found smoking in Illinois will end up costing people more than $34,000 a year or $1.77 million over a lifetime of smoking for about 50 years. For a pack-a-day smoker, the habit can cost more than $2,700 per year just to buy cigarettes, the study found.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Wheaton City Council on Jan. 17 voted 6-0 to approve plans for the former Wheaton Inn building at 301 W. Roosevelt Road to become a facility for new and expectant single mothers. The Clarendon Hills-based company Love From Above plans to offer a two-year transitional housing program for women 18 to 26 years old that will serve single mothers in DuPage County. The facility would serve as many as 12 women at any given time who find themselves in “crisis pregnancies,” Love From Above President and founder Yvonne Florczak-Seeman previously said. City Council members approved the plans contingent on the installation of landscaping for the property and the replacement of any required landscaping that has died or is dying. In addition, the facility will only be able to serve a maximum of 12 women at any given time. While Wheaton Mayor Michael Gresk said he would have preferred to have seen a commercial use for the building, “it’s good to see that building occupied.” “It’s an appropriate use,” he said. Council members previously asked if the facility would have to be licensed or regulated by the state. Greg Dose, attorney for the applicant, wrote a letter to the city stating the facility is not subject to regulation or licensing by the Department of Children and Family Services under the Illinois Child Care Act. In the letter, Dose said the facility will be the primary residence of the women. “While they reside there, it will be their home and the home of their infant and toddler children,” Dose said in the letter. “There will be no children on the premises other than those of the moms. Thus all child care that occurs on the premises will be home-based child care.” Dose said the facility is exempt from DCFS licensing and regulation because the children will not be apart from their parents. Wheaton’s city attorney has agreed with Dose’s opinion. As proposed, the women staying at the facility would have to be enrolled in college to participate in the program. This would be the company’s first facility, which will be called The Butterfly Garden…A Place for Healing and Transformation. The Wheaton Inn originally was built in 1987 and most recently was used as office space by an investment company that relocated to Downers Grove a few years ago. Council member Suzanne Fitch was absent from the meeting.)

They have lost America’s heartland and small towns and rural areas. Look at the political power shift to the right. The Democrats have 12 fewer U.S. senators than when President Barack Obama was sworn in, 63 fewer House members and 16 fewer governors. They have the lowest number of state legislators in more than 100 years. In only six states do Democrats control both the governorship and the legislature — the lowest number in our history. Other than President Obama, Democrats have a severe messaging problem and a dearth of winning candidates; the party is a fundamental mess. Most importantly, Democrats have forgotten their roots in the economic goals of the Roosevelt New Deal and the Johnson Great Society. They have abandoned an inclusive message. Those who were there said Pence kept it light, and did not go into topics like job creation, even though that’s what Tim Schneider, Chairman of the Illinois Republican Party, said he hopes Pence will bring to our state. “People are leaving because there are no jobs. I think we need to bring jobs back to those communities were people have choices; and don’t choose to join gangs and do those types of things. Give them a job,” Schneider said. Kirk Dillard is chair of the Regional Transit Authority, which oversees the CTA, Metra, and Pace is ready to lobby Pence into spending more money on railroad infrastructure. “I clearly want Governor Pence, whose father was a bus driver in Chicago, to understand the need for mass transit like we have in Chicago,” Dillard said. Throughout the duration of the two hour fundraiser protesters chanted and held signs outside. Betty Virginia Holcomb is concerned with Pence’s track record of wanting to defund Planned Parenthood and restrict access to abortions. “Mike Pence has already put in place restrictive actions in the state of Indiana that restrict women’s access to reproductive rights and other types of healthcare,” she said. Glenn Pannell, who looks remarkably similar to the VP-elect, came all the way from New York to take a stand and support Planned Parenthood and LGBTQ organizations. “Mike Pence is out here raising money for the next four years…I’m out here raising money and awareness for people and causes that are important to me and unimportant to Mike Pence,” Pannell said. Tickets for the fundraiser cost $2,700 and up. The event raised hundreds of thousands of dollars that will go to the Republican National Committee to pay for multiple transition costs. Pence was not greeted by protesters, although they arrived later while he was inside. Illinois Republican Chairman Tim Schneider said a fractured state party during the primary season has since coalesced around Trump and Pence. “Chicago is the hub of the Midwest and it’s also very close to his roots in Indiana, so he can draw from those folks who are supporters from Indiana,” said Schneider, a Cook County commissioner, of Pence’s visit to the city. “I think we have a great number of supporters here in Chicago who believe in this new Trump-Pence administration, and that’s why they’re here.” Not listed as part of the host committee were U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk and U.S. Rep. Robert Dold of Kenilworth, who distanced themselves from Trump but ultimately lost their re-election bids last month. Apparently spurred by the recent emphasis on government consolidation in DuPage County, residents in Lisle and Warrenville are circulating petitions to place referendum questions on the April 4 ballot to measure support for proposals to annex their communities to Naperville. A similar petition has been rumored to be circulating in Woodridge. Officials in all four towns said Friday they don’t know what’s behind the effort and stress that the complexities and likely resistance to such consolidations make them extremely unlikely. Lisle Mayor Joseph Broda said he first heard about the push earlier this month when Warrenville officials contacted leaders in all three towns — along with Woodridge — to alert them to the petition drives. “It’s hard to figure this one out,” Broda said. Warrenville Mayor David Brummel says he would oppose any effort to annex his city into Naperville.
