Bruce Rauner plans to sign into law on Monday both an automatic voter registration and an immigration measure that would limit the role of local law enforcement in federal efforts —a move that may spark some backlash among his conservative base. Conservative firebrand Joe Walsh tweeted if he signs the immigration bill, “Governor Rauner is done.” Last week the governor on WBEZ-FM called the immigration measure — the Illinois Trust Act — “very reasonable,” but would not confirm whether he’d sign it. On Tuesday, the governor’s office confirmed he’d sign the immigration and voter registration measures on Monday. The immigration legislation would prohibit police in Illinois from detaining or arresting a person based on their immigration status or on federal immigration detainer. It would allow law enforcement officials, however, to detain a person with a judge’s order. The bill passed with bipartisan support and was supported by faith leaders, law enforcement and businesses. But Republicans initially opposed the measure, arguing it will cause a conflict with federal laws. State Sen. Dave Syverson of Rockford has said Republicans are concerned the “blanket prohibition could result in leaving criminal illegal immigrants, including those accused of violent crimes, on the streets.” The conservative news organization Breitbart just wrote an article on the bill suggesting Rauner would be helping Democrats “frustrate federal immigration enforcement.” And Walsh, a former congressman and talk radio personality, weighed in on Tuesday, tweeting that if Rauner “allows Illinois to become a sanctuary state, I will not support his reelection. No way.” When TV reporter Mary Ann Ahern tweeted that Rauner planned to sign the bill, Walsh responded: “If true, bad terrible day for Illinois. Gov Rauner is done.” Rauner has steered clear of making comments about federal issues, specifically about “sanctuary cities.” He has said he’s in support of a comprehensive immigration policy, however. The automatic voter registration measure will automatically register people to vote at state drivers’ facilities, when applying for, updating or renewing a driver’s license or state ID — unless they opt out. It also creates a similar program for other state agencies. The governor vetoed a similar measure last year, citing concerns over voter fraud, and federal election laws. Illinois will be the ninth state to approve automatic voter registration. The measure was sent to the governor June 29.)

Bruce Rauner does not plan to wade into the controversy over a cartoon by a conservative think tank that sparked bipartisan outrage in the General Assembly and charges that it was racially offensive. “The governor would never try to talk anyone out of their reaction to any piece of art, political or nonpolitical, right or left, good or bad,” Rauner spokeswoman Laurel Patrick said Tuesday. “The governor has great respect for the black caucus and members of the General Assembly who voiced concerns about the cartoon. “The governor’s office has also heard from members of the black community who found truth in the imagery and do not find the cartoon offensive. Here is where things stand: The cartoon was removed days ago. And the governor – as a white male – does not have anything more to add to the discussion.” The cartoon by the Illinois Policy Institute depicted a black child in a Cubs cap begging for money for school from a wealthy cigar-smoking white man, who was showing one pocket empty and the other stuffed with tax-increment financing money. State Rep. Jaime Andrade denounced the cartoon on the floor of the General Assembly, drawing a bipartisan standing ovation when he denounced it as “s—.”  State Rep. Christian Mitchell, D-Chicago, called it a “Sambo” cartoon.  State Rep. Tom Demmer, R-Dixon, agreed, tweeting “Cartoons don’t make racism any more palatable @illinoispolicy should delete their cartoon and apologize. That has no place in policy debate.” The response from Rauner’s office on Tuesday did not go over well with Mitchell. “Wait what? So being a white male removes @GovRauner from a position of moral leadership? This is more disgraceful than saying nothing,” Mitchell tweeted. The Illinois Policy Institute defended the cartoon, which was intended to depict how Chicago siphons money from education with TIF funds. The think tank denied that it was racist, but removed it from its website, saying it was distracting from the debate over education funding and “the failure of political leaders to address the root cause of our struggling education system.” The think tank has been aligned with the governor, and Rauner has tapped its staff to replace senior members of his own administration since his budget veto was overridden earlier this year. Even after the institute removed the cartoon, NBC5 Political Reporter Mary Ann Ahern kept the issue alive on Twitter, repeatedly questioning whether the governor had seen the cartoon and what his reaction was. Patrick finally responded Tuesday. “Charges of racism must be taken very seriously,” she said. “The tragedy in Charlottesville and its aftermath serve as sobering reminders that even today, some remain who would use violence and hate to divide us. We must never relent in working toward a future built not on what divides us, but what unites us.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: I thought my view of the Chicago Tribune couldn’t get lower and then I read a piece by Mr. Kim Janssen on State Representative Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton), one of the most courageous, ethical lawmakers in Springfield. Last week, Rep. Ives posted a link to my article titled “Christians Must Exit Government Schools” on her Facebook page. Subsequently, Janssen wrote an article titled “Lawmaker compares teachers who support transgender rights to ‘dirty old men,” ostensibly about Rep. Ives, which was published online Friday night. As I predicted, the Trib waited to publish it in their Sunday print edition rather than publishing it in the slim and little-read Saturday edition. It seems that the Trib powers-that-be want to use my politically incorrect writing to do as much political damage to Rep. Ives as possible. Clarification for the Trib: Lawmaker Ives did not compare teachers who support alleged “transgender rights” to dirty old men. I compared teachers who expose children to obscene material to dirty old men. Further clarification: Gender-dysphoric persons have no ethical or moral “right” to use opposite sex restrooms and locker rooms. In an email to Rep. Ives after his article was published, Janssen doubled-down on the absurd claim that objectively male and objectively female persons have a “right” to access opposite-sex private spaces, accusing Rep. Ives of having a “history of opposition to transgender rights.” Janssen’s assertion reveals his ideological bias. “Trans”-identifying persons have no more ethical “right” to use opposite-sex facilities than do I or Mr. Janssen. The current manifestation of the sexual revolution is not a fight for equal rights or a fight to gain rights that have been denied to some group. Artificially feminized men and artificially virilized women are declaring that they deserve special, a-historical privileges. They have decided that while all other humans must use private spaces that correspond to their objective, immutable biological sex, they—that is, “trans”-identifying persons—may use private spaces that do not correspond to their objective, immutable biological sex. They are demanding to be treated differently from most humans. Perhaps a better way to define what gender-pretenders are doing is to say they have arrogated the unilateral authority to declare that all spaces in which humans undress or engage in bodily functions will no longer correspond to objective, immutable sex but, rather, will correspond to subjective, internal feelings about one’s sex. “Trans”-identifying persons, however, have no authority or right to decide that feelings trump objective sex when it comes to accessing private spaces. In his “news” article about Rep. Ives—really an article about my article—Janssen cites the ethically impoverished Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), which labels IFI a “hate group” based on our views of volitional homoerotic activity, marriage, and the “trans” ideology, views with which the SPLC disagrees. The only way IFI, which holds orthodox theological views, can be deemed a “hate group” is by redefining hatred.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The surprise decision of George Nesterczuk to withdraw as a candidate to head the Office of Personnel Management cheered federal unions and some, maybe many, feds who remember the Reagan years as a nervous time to be a fed. But his withdrawal from consideration can also be viewed as a blow to the administration’s promise/threat to shake, rattle and roll the federal bureaucracy, making it skinnier and more responsive. And less fireproof. Or not. It is equally possible that the next OPM director, when nominated and confirmed, could come in with an even tougher agenda, but with less knowledge of how the civil service systems function. Nesterczuk’s departure — five months after he was nominated — is also an example of the problems many agencies are facing because so many key political jobs are either vacant or held by appointees from the Obama administration. The rudderless OPM has been without a confirmed director since 2015. Although the agency is little known outside of government and outside of Washington, it plays a critical role in the work lives of civil servants and retirees. Nesterczuk’s first federal job was as an astrophysicist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. After leaving government, he was active in Republican politics in Maryland and ran Ronald Reagan’s campaign in the state. He was later appointed as associate director for executive personnel at OPM under its controversial director Donald Devine. During the Reagan years, many federal workers — and especially federal and postal unions — felt unloved, at best, and under attack at worst. Nesterczuk drew additional union fire for helping set up a Bush administration initiative called the National Security Personnel System. It was a Defense Department program the administration hoped to expand to other agencies. Under it, managers would have the ability to set employee pay within bands (rather than the traditional 15 grades) based on their performance. Unions balked at it, and complained that they had little input. As a result, the 200,000 workers put under the NSPS were all from outside union bargaining units. Pay raises for many exceeded the regular annual federal pay raises. This being Washington, each side had a conspiracy theory with each claiming both success and the moral high ground. The Bush administration said it was proof that when motivated and given more opportunities, workers rose to the challenge. Unions said the same thing, in reverse. They claimed that political appointees at the Pentagon gave NSPS workers bigger raises to prove that the new system worked, And possibly stick it to unions too. In any case, the Democratic Congress unraveled it and the 200,000 feds who had been under the NSPS were blended back into their previous grades, but often at higher pay. For critics of the Reagan administration’s approach to the federal workforce, Nesterczuk is credited/blamed for working under and closely with Devine during what some people refer to as the “Devine Years.” One former congressional staffer-turned lobbyist who followed the federal-postal beat said: “Remembering that the demise of the CSRS retirement plan occurred as a result of the bipartisan agreement between Democrat Tip O’Neill and Republican Ronald Reagan to bail out Social Security by forcing new federal employees into that program, Mr. Nesterczuk’s previous tenure at OPM was marked by no significant lasting cuts in employee benefits, the congressional establishment of the successful Federal Employees Retirement System (over the objections of Nesterczuk and his old boss [Devine] who wanted only a “super IRA” for feds), and the start of significant membership growth by at least two civil service unions that have sustained their efforts to this very day. The unions may cheer Nesterczuk’s withdrawal, but it is useful to remember that his past record is one of ineffectiveness. Now President Trump has a chance to nominate someone who can really do some damage.”)

Sadly, my retirement net egg is less than that because my Democrat superiors in the federal government wasted my career and forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old.)

Amass a large enough nest egg to replace 80% of your yearly income  In the absence of a crystal ball, it’s hard to predict exactly what your living expenses will look like in retirement. But as a general rule, you should expect to need at least 80% of what you previously earned times the number of years you expect your retirement to last. The latter is something you may have to guess at, but if it helps (which it should), the Social Security Administration says that 25% of today’s 65 year olds will live past the age of 90. If you’re planning to retire at 66 and would rather be optimistic about your health going forward, then you’d be wise to plan for a 25-year retirement (at a minimum). Otherwise, it might pay to work a few extra years, amass some more savings, and simultaneously cut down on the number of years you’ll need those savings to pay for. But if you want a shot at a reasonably comfortable retirement lifestyle, you’ll need the right amount of savings to get there. It’s as simple as that. Once you leave your career behind you, you may have limited options for generating additional income. So before you retire, make sure to have a decent chunk of emergency savings, pay off your home, get out of debt, and establish a respectable nest egg. Otherwise, you risk encountering more financial stress later in life than you bargained for.)
