(FROM THE ARTICLE: Forbes magazine reports that its annual review of the super-wealthy in the United States revealed Illinois has just 18 billionaires out of a population of 12.5 million. Rapp was struck by two things — the small number of billionaires and the frequency of their last names. Of the 18, six are Pritzkers. “I thought that was kind of funny,” Rapp said. The statistic stands as stark testimony to the wisdom of making a good choice when picking one’s parents. The Pritzker family is the 15th wealthiest family in the world, with a combined $33.5 billion net worth. Celebrity Net Worth reports that “A.N. Pritzker was the son of Ukrainian immigrants” who invested “in real estate and companies in trouble while he worked for his dad’s law firm.” Thus began a family financial dynasty that is tied to the Hyatt Hotel chain. Forbes magazine reported in 2019 that of the 18 Illinois billionaires, Thomas Pritzker ranks No. 3 ($4.1 billion net worth), the governor is at No. 4 ($3.2 billion), Jean Pritzker is at No. 5 ($3.1 billion net worth), Penny Pritzker, No. 6 (2.6 billion net worth), Nicholas Pritzker, No. 7 ($2 billion) and Jennifer Pritzker, No. 8 ($1.9 billion). . .But it’s a different story when it comes to millionaires, meaning people with a net worth of at least $1 million, not necessarily an annual income of at least $1 million. Crain’s Chicago Business reported in 2016 that “the number of millionaire households in Illinois reached 280,265, up 5.2 percent from 2014.” In 2016, Crains reported, that number represented “1 out of every 18 households” — 5.5 percent. Pritzker’s proposed progressive income tax, however, is about income, not net worth.)
