The foreign visa workers arrive via numerous visa programs, including the H-1B, OPT, CPT, L-1, TN, E-3, J-1, H4EAD, and O-1 programs. The huge annual inflow keeps an army of roughly 1.5 million visa-workers in U.S.-based jobs. Most of the visa workers will work long hours for low wages because they hope to get hugely valuable green cards for themselves — and their extended family — from the federal government. This flood of foreign labor aids investors by lowering salaries for Americans graduates, many of whom need decent salaries to pay down their college debts, to buy homes, and to get their own children to get into college.)

Anne Stava-Murray’s description of her hometown as “white supremacist” is less how wrong and irresponsible the characterization is than how destructive it is to a conversation that needs to continue. In an interview last week with the Daily Herald’s Marie Wilson, the Naperville Democrat doubled down on a Facebook post that attracted broad criticism, insisting that long-dead policies and practices in “the whole Chicago region” justify claiming that today we see “white supremacy in an unclad kind of way, without its hood on” in contemporary policies and attitudes. Her comments, let us state flatly, are patently offensive and outrageously exaggerated. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Democratic lawmakers are proposing to prohibit employers from inquiring about the dates of a job applicant’s birth and graduation. A group of 25 House Democrats is sponsoring the legislation with the stated aim of reducing age discrimination in job hiring. “This bill will make a real difference for seniors who are being unfairly vetted based on their age,” said Rep. Derek Slap, D-West Hartford, a lead sponsor. The Labor and Public Employees Committee is scheduled to vote this afternoon to set a hearing date for House Bill 6113 and five other bills. A state law enacted last year bars Connecticut employers from asking job applicants about how much previous jobs paid them without a job offer being made that includes wages.
